Worlds Collided - Tarra S Massallo

    CHAPTER 1

    COAL

MY NAME’S COAL Blakeman, and I’m a male fairy. In the fairy world, there are five classes: Rayuen, Raiere, Renere, Ronere, and the lowest and most common class, Ryksen. Although there is another class that outranks everyone—a Kryath. It’s what we call the ruler of the fairies. The current Kryath is Kryath Gharial. He’s part of the nineteenth dynasty of the fairy lineage. He lives on the highest part of our tree island in a large castle. Being a Kryath, or even becoming friends with one, is considered very rare.

The fairy species all live in a huge tree, with the highest ranks on top and the lowest on the bottom. I’m part of the lower class of fairies, Ryksen.

You might be thinking that we fairies can fly.

    Well, newsflash buddy, we can’t.

Fairies haven’t been able to for a long time! There’s an old legend explaining why, but it’s probably not true. So, I’m not going to get into that.

Each fairy has a unique wing pattern, containing things like swirls, shapes, and even pictures. My wings are a picture of what seems like a constellation. Anyway, let me tell you a bit about myself.

My father works as a Pexsmith. That means he works with what little exldust he has to infuse the exldust’s raw magic into pieces of metal. Exldust just amplifies your powers; it’s also pretty rare!

Unfortunately, my parents are Renere class because of the exldust my father works with. So, when I was young the Winderouh (Win-der-oh) Bureau of Magic (WBM) tested me to rank my powers and guess what? I just HAD to turn up with no powers, like a Ryksen! So I was given to a Ryksen orphanage, as is custom. I don’t hold a grudge or anything, but Ryksen get treated pretty badly.

Thankfully, the caretaker at the orphanage was able to tell me what happened.

    But I’m 17 now!

I have a best friend at school. Her name is Boshay Cepla, which translates to Amber Apricot in the language of the fairies. I just call her Bow though. Her family are Rayuen and have been known for their knowledge and economic acumen since the beginning of time, at least according to the old ladies at the supermarket, but they say a lot of crazy things, so I’m not sure that’s true. Like the time they said that the world was made by magicians.

The problem with Bow is that while her family are Rayuen, she’s only a Raiere because she only has three powers and Rayuen are supposed to have four. When you turn seventeen, you’re supposed to manifest your full power potential.

But I have no powers and Bow is only sixteen. I guess that’s everything! See yo—

    COAL!

I scrambled to get up and off the bed, hitting my head in the process on the top bunk of my small bed. Atsah! I yelped, What! I rubbed my head and turned to the door. It was Bow. She rushed over. Are you okay?

Yep, just fine! I croaked out.

I didn’t mean to… but you were in the bed and—

Look, Bow! I interrupted, "I’m fine!"

She mumbled under her breath, … don’t have to be so rude…

I sighed and gave her a hug. You’re right, I’m sorry, I admitted. Now what did you want to tell me? She beamed and, for a moment, it seemed like the whole world shone with light.

Let’s go get some ice cream!

So we headed out of the orphanage, got ice cream, and walked to the park. Technically I wasn’t supposed to be there, but since Bow’s father basically funds everything, she had a special pass to enter the gates and befriend lower classes.

There we sat on our favourite bench in the park. The bench was perched atop a grassy cliff, overlooking the stardust ocean. We sat there for the rest of the day, licking our lotus nectar ice cream. As Bow and I watched the sunset, I felt all warm and fuzzy inside, like nothing could ever tear or break us apart. I shoved the feeling down, feeling a little silly. But still, as Bow went back to her house as I went back to the orphanage, I wondered if everything could finally be… okay.
