श्रीमच्छेषगिरेस्तटाधिनिलयं श्रीवेंकटेशं गुरूं

नत्वा वेंकटनायकं तधनुदिनं जातोहमार्यात्सुधी: ॥

ज्योति: शास्त्र महाब्धिपारगमने वक्ष्यामि पोतात्मकं

Shri Venket Sharma, the author, offers the following opening prayer (mangalacharanam):

After bowing repeatedly to Lord Venketeshwara, who has his abode on the side of the mountain called Sheshadri and to the most respectable Guru of mine whose grace has made me Pandit Vyankat sharma, I offer the book Sarvarth Chintamani" as a ship to cross the Great ocean of Astrology by the people learned in the art of astrological divination. (1)

नीलांबुजरुचिं देंव सकृद्यांति मनोरथम्‌ ॥

देवा: प्रणम्य यं सर्वे तं नमामि गजाननम्‌ ॥ २ ॥

I bow to Shri Ganesh. who has the lustre like a blue Lotus and by worshipping whom all the gods easily get their desired object. (2)

वाग्विभूतिप्रदा देवी या श्वेतांबुरुइस्थिता ॥

गोक्षीरधवलाकारा स्वयं तिष्ठतु वाचि मे ॥ ३ ॥

May the Goddess Sarasvati. who bestows on men the wealth of speech, who has her abode in the white Lotus and whose comple-xion is white like the Cow's milk. make my speech as her abode. (3)

मेषादिराशय: सर्वे दिनेशप्रमुखा ग्रहा: ॥

ये च लोकोपकर्तार: पांतु मामिह ते सदा ॥ ४ ॥

May the signs Aries etc. the Planets Sun etc and others engaged in the welfare of mankind. always give me. their protection. (4)

यज्जातके निगदितं भुवि मानवानां

तत्प्राशिनकेपि सकलं कथयंति तज्ज्ञाः ॥

प्रश्नोपि जन्मसदृशो भवति प्रभेदः

प्रश्नस्य चात्र जननस्य न कश्चिदस्ति ॥ ५ ॥

Whatever principles have been enunciated in the Natal Astrology, are equally applicable to the Horary Astrology. There is no difference between the two (Horary relates to chart of the heaven prepared for the moment of query). (5)

भौमाच्छविच्चन्द्ररविज्ञशुक्रंवक्रेज्यमंदार्कसुतामरेज्या: ॥

मेषादिभानामधिपा: क्रमेण तदंशकानामपि ते भवेयु: ॥ ६ ॥

The lords of the 42 signs Aries to Pisces are Mars, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Saturn and Jupiter respectively. The lord of a navamsha is the same as that of the sign as stated above. (6)

TRANSLATOR’S NOTE

The idea underlying the lordship of the planets over the signs is to state the fact that the various signs always act like the planets having lordship over them. For details regarding Navamsha. (See Shloka 11.)

मेषादिमूर्धा वदनं गलाधोह्त्कुक्षिवासोभृतबस्तिगुहम्‌ ॥

ततोरुजानुद्वयजंघमंघ्री पापान्वितं यत्तदुपैति नाशम्‌ ॥ ७ ॥

Aries represents head, Taurus face, Gemini breast, Cancer heart, Leo belly, Virgo waist, Libra private parts, Scorpio rectum. Sagittarius hips, Capricorn knees, Aquarius legs and Pisces feet. The sign that is afflicted by the association etc of malefic Planets denotes trouble in the limb it represents. (7)

TRANSLATOR’S NOTE

The shloka is useful in the diagnosis of diseases of the limbs of the body. The particular limb represented by the sign. of course suffers as a result of affliction of the association or aspect on it of malefic planets. But the results would be more palpable if the lord of the sign also is afflicted. If, in addition, the house rep-resenting the limb is afflicted, the disease or injury would be more severe. If all the four factors representing a limb namely the sign. its lord, the house corresponding in number to the sign and the lord of that house are afflicted the trouble would be the severe most. The nature of trouble in the limb and its severity also depend on the severity of the affliction i.e. on the number and strength of the afflicting planets and their nature. For example. if the 5th sign and its lord. the 5th house and its lord are influenced by Rahu and the lord of the sign occupied by Rahu it would be a case of heart attack. If by Saturn and by the lord of the sign occupied by Saturn it would be a case of dyspepsia, indigestion etc. If by Mars and Ketu or by the lords of the signs occupied by Mars and Ketu, it would be a case for operation of or injury to the belly. In regard to intensity it may be added that if for example. the 2th house, lord of the 12th house sign number 2 and its lord Jupiter are all afflicted by both Mars & Ketu or by Mars as lord of the sign occupied by Ketu or by both, the feet may have to be amputated.

व्यत्यस्तमत्स्यव्दयमश्वज॑घश्चापी मनुष्य: सगदं सवीणम्‌ ॥

नृयुग्ममादाय करेग्निसस्ये नौस्थाबला मानधरो वणिक्‌ च ॥ ८ ॥

घटी जलादानग्रहीतुकाम: शेषा: स्वनामानुगुणा भवंति ॥

मेषस्तु मेषो वृषभ: स एव कर्की कुलीरस्त्वय वृश्चिकोलि: ॥ ९ ॥

The sign Pisces is symbolised by two fish with the tail of one on the mouth of the other, Sagittarius by a man with the lower portion as of a horse and with bow in the hand, Gemini by a pair of man and woman, holding mace and the musical instrument-veena, Virgo by a girl in a boat, holding a fire pot in one hand and grains in the other, Libra by a man with balance in the hand, Aquarius by a man carrying on his shoulder a water pot. The traits of the rest of the signs are as denoted by their names i.e. Aries by lamb, Taurus by an ox. Cancer by crab. the sea creature of that name. Scorpio by Scorpion. (8-9)

राशिं त्रिधाकृत्य दृकाणमाहुस्तदीशपुत्रेश शुभाधिनाथा: ॥

युजीन्दुसूय्यौं भवने रवीन्दू नाथौ त्वयुग्मे भवनस्य चाद्धे ॥ १० ॥

A decante (Drikaan) consists of one third part of a sign. The first decante i.e. from degrees 1 to 10 has the same planet as its lord as the lord of the sign whose 1st decante it is. The 2nd decante from degrees 11 to 20 is owned by the planet who is lord of the sign 5th to the sign under consideration. The 3rd decante from 21 to 30 degrees is owned by the planet lord of the sign 9th to that under consideration. In even signs the lord of the first hora i.e. the first 15 degrees is Moon & of the next is the Sun, while in the case of odd signs the hora of the first half of the sign belongs to the Sun & the second half to Moon. चरंशका नामधिपास्तदंशाद्राशौ स्थिरे तन्नवमेश्वराद्या: ॥

द्विदेहमेतत्सुतराशिनाथाद्वदंति शास्त्रार्थविदो महांत: ॥ ११ ॥

The first Navamsha sign in the cardinal signs 1, 4, 7, & 10 is the lord of the sign itself i.e. Mars, Moon, Venus & Saturn respectively. The first Navamsha sign in the fixed signs 2, 5, 8 and 11 are the signs 9th from the sign i.e. 10, 1, 4 and 7 respectively. The first Navamsha sign in signs 3, 6,9 & 12 are the signs fifth from the sign 7, 10, 1 & 4 respectively. (The rest follow in the order as stated in shloka-6.) (11)

TRANSLATORS NOTE

Since the order of the Navamsha signs is the same as in the natural order Aries Taurus etc to Pisces there is a very simple way to find out the Navamsha sign. Suppose we desire to find out the 1st Navamsha sign in the sign Gemini. Multiply the number of signs past i.e. 2 by 9. The result gives the signs past ie. 8 Or Virgo (2 plus 6) hence the first sign in Gemini would be the sign next to Virgo i.e. Libra

Example 2 Find out the sign representing the 4th Navamsha of Sagittarius. Here 8 X 9 = 72 plus 4 = 76 divided by 2 leaves 4 i.e. the answer & lord of 4 i.e. Moon is the lord of the 4th Navamsha of Sagittarius.

We give below tables showing the signs falling in the various vargas or divisions of a sign and the lord of the signs 50 falling.

तत्क्षेत्रपा द्वादशभागनाथा लग्नस्य वर्गाधिपतिस्तदीशात्‌ ॥

त्रिंशांशपा भौमशनीज्यसौम्यशुक्रा भवंत्योजगृहे समे तु ॥ १२ ॥

विलोमत: पंचशराष्टसप्तबाणा: क्रमादूचुरनेकशास्त्रे: ॥

सप्तांशपास्त्वोजगृहे तदीशाद्युग्मे गृहे सप्तमराशिपात्तु ॥ १३ ॥

The 1st 1/12th part of a sign belongs to the sign itself & the other parts come in the order of the signs. As regards the 30th part in the odd signs the lords of the first 5 degrees is Mars. of the 6th to 20 degrees Saturn, of the ]3th to 20th degrees Jupiter, of the 21st to 25th degrees Mercury, of the 26th to 30th Venus. In the even signs the order is reverse i.e. the first 5 degrees belong to Venus, 6th to l0th to Mercury, 11th to 18th toJupiter, 19th to 25th-to Saturn & 26th to 30th to Mars.

In odd signs the lord of the first 1/7th division is the lord of the sign itself & in even signs the lord of the 1st 1/7th division is the lord of the sign 7th to the sign involved. The order of the signs remaining as the natural one. This table has already been given.

दशांशपानामधिपास्तदीशादोजे समे तन्नवमेश्वराद्या: ॥

युग्मे क्रमाव्द्यत्ययमेव राशौ षष्ट्यंशपानामधिपास्त्वयुग्मे ॥ १५ ॥

In the odd signs the first 1/10th division belongs to the lord of the sign itself and in even signs the 1st 1/10th division belongs to the lord of the sign counted 9th from it. The order of signs is natural one. The lords of these divisions are the 10 dikpals (lords of directions). In the 1/16th division the lords of the divisions are the lords of the signs Aries to Pisces & then Aries to Cancer. In the sign Taurus the signs would be 5 to 12 & then 1 to 8 & 50 on (See the table). (14, 45)

काली गौरी जया लक्ष्मीर्विजया विमला सती ॥

प्रत्यंगिरा शची रौद्री भवानी वरदा जया ॥

Now we will deal with the 1/20th division etc. There are different Devis governing the various numbers of the 1/20th division. These are shown in the table for the 1/20th division. They are governed by Dervis from Kali to Aparajita. (1-5)

समभे तुलतो ज्ञेया: स्वस्वाधिपसमन्विता: ॥ १३ ॥

In the 1/24th division the signs from Aries & other odd signs start with Leo. In the case of even signs these start with Cancer as shown in the table.

As regards the 1/27th division the 1st 27th division of the sign Aries belongs to Aries. 2nd 27th division to the next sign & so on, till the 27th which will in this order be governed by Gemini. Hence the 1st 27th division of Taurus will be governed by Cancer & so on. In the 1/40th division, the first division in all odd signs belongs to the sign Aries; while in all even signs, it belongs to Libra, as Shown in the table. In the 1/45 division, the 1st division of every movable sign belongs to Aries: the 1st of every fixed sign, to Leo and the first of every common sign, to Sagittarius. The order of the signs owned remains the natural one. (6-14)
