PetrosH_001.jpgIntroduction
God is Great
From the day I was born in Massawa, Eritrea until I currently write this book in the USA, my life has never been easy. I passed through so many problems and near-death incidents in my life around the world. Only God was standing by my side to save me.
First and foremost, I would like to thank God. I would also like to thank my lovely hero daughter Shamm Petros for always encouraging me. Also, I want to thank all three of my kids who are my heroes in my life: Dr. Ruth Petros, Shamm Petros, and Mike Petros. My special hero in the writing of this book was my lovely daughter Shamm Petros. I thank her so much with all of my heart. My book is based on a true story, so please read and enjoy it.
Thank you,
Hadgu Petros
Chapter One
Eritrea
July 1954 - September 1970
I was born on July 19, 1954, in Massawa, Eritrea. As a half orphan and from a very poor family. When I was a kid, I grew up in the Campo Marta area in Massawa. Eritrea was under federation with Ethiopia between 1952-1962 when I was born. My father, Mr. Petros Equbu passed away one month before I came to this troubled world. And I never met my father, and he was from the Senafe area in Giyaseh Village Eritrea.
My mother, Temketu Welnkial Resom. She was from Hamasen, Eritrea. By her father side from Adam Zemat and her mother side, from Zegeb. Both Adem Zemat and Zegeb are about 20 km away from Asmara, the capital city of Eritrea. My parents are both Tigrinya speakers and they came from the high land of Eritrea to Massawa for a better job. But Massawa native people are Tigre Ethnic, and they live most of them in the Hirgigo area, which is about 10 km away from the seaport of Massawa.
Massawa is located in East Africa off the Red Sea, and it is one of the seaports of Eritrea. Eritrea has two seaports: Massawa and Assab. Mr. Petros was the second husband to my mother and both parents had three children: 1. Negisti Petros, 2. Goitom Petros and 3. Hadgu Petros. I was the last kid from the family. My first name Hadgu
in Tigrinya means the legacy of his father.
My mother had a girl named Silase, first before she married Mr. Petros and her father’s name was Equbankial and he was from the Aderada area near Asmara. Silase, she was born in Asmara. Since I was five years old, I remember a lot but before when I was a baby, I have no idea how my mother raised me.
After Mr. Petros passed away, my mother started a small business selling salt and shiro (spicy local food). One way from Massawa she takes salt to Asmara, to sell it. She used to bring her famous shiro and I remember most of Campo Marta and Edaga Beray people used to love her famous shiro.
Our life was connected with the Italian Steam Train. Which was running from Asamara to Massawa six days a week except on Sunday and the schedule of the train was: 1. Asmara to Massawa, Monday, Wednesday and Friday; and 2. From Massawa to Asmara, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The distance between Massawa and Asamara is 117KM by train but if you travel by car the distance is 115KM.
From Massawa to Asmara to travel by train it takes between 8-10 hours. The problem is not just the distance but the train used to stop at every train station, starting at 6AM the train leaves Tiwalet Station Massawa anywhere between 2PM and 4PM arrives in Asmara and in between the train stops at 17 train stations and it goes through 30 tunnels.
After my daddy passed away, life was hard for my mother and at age 5 she put me in her business. She used to send me from Massawa to Asmara with two or three bags of salt. After I sold the salt, the next day I went back to Massawa then gave the money to my mother.
After age 6 I started my own business just like my mother. I used to take some salt bags from Massawa to Asmara to get some money for my bread. Salt is the product of Massawa and Assab and I never pay for the train either for myself or my salt bags.
At age 7, my mother put me at Tewalet Orthodox St. Mariam Church to study. At that time only two churches were located in Tewalet, Massawa. One was Saint Mary Cathedral Church, and another was Orthodax Saint Mariam Church, which had a priest named Araya and he was
