SKULLS OF ATLANTIS
CHAPTER 1
THE BABAROY
Asha hobbled and limped as fast as she could.
The rain and lightning were her only companions; harsh allies, but allies, nonetheless.
She was exhausted.
Her breathing was forced.
Sharp rocks cut her feet badly as she tried to run.
The hillsides were unwelcoming. Her ribs were broken; she carried dark bruises and deep cuts all over her muscular form that still seeped red blood onto her equally red skin.
The landscape was bleak. The Babaroy ruled here; they held little regard for the land or its conquered peoples.
I need to find clothes and shelter. And a better weapon than this silly rock, raced through her thoughts.
Asha was bloodied from the fight back in the cave. She tried to free her friend from the evil Babaroy cannibals but failed, arriving too late. The giant male had tried to rape her, already aroused at her approach, his woman egging him on as she protected her tiny newborn while throwing anything she could find to aid her mate and screaming taunts and threats.
Asha had been forced to kill all three out of pure rage. They had her companion Sada cooking over a fire with a spit stake running through her. It was a horrifying image she still had not processed.
The types and levels of evil she encountered out here in the lands of the Babaroy were utterly foreign to her.
She shivered. The rain was cold. It would have been tolerable with her clothes from when she had started her journey from the King's palace. She had been a fool and didn’t understand the world outside her protected upbringing.
This cruel place had literally already taken everything from her. She had no possessions but her rock. Everything else had been stripped away, including her friend Sada.
Lightning flashed.
She heard gravel sliding and talking from behind her. Her pursuers were gaining on her and were brazen. They had no concern for stealth or fear of discovery.
These were the Babaroy Storm Reapers, not the unclothed monsters she had been fighting, but special elite troops.
Clad in dark, weather-worn armor that seemed to have witnessed countless battles, the Babaroy Storm Reapers loomed in front of her like malevolent shadows. Their towering figures cast eerie silhouettes against the jagged rocks, and the thunderous booms of the storm were drowned out by the deafening pounding of her own heart.
Their faces were obscured by ominous helmets adorned with wickedly sharp, horn-like protrusions that sent a shiver down her spine. Through the narrow slits of their helmets, their eyes glinted with chilling intensity, reflecting a predatory cunning that made her blood run cold.
The typical Babaroy soldier fought without armor or even clothes. They were brutal hairy savages. These Storm Reapers were different; elite compared to the typical warriors; the Reapers were even more of a force to be reckoned with. In the ranks of the Babaroy army, they stood above the rest, distinguished by their unmatched skill, unwavering loyalty, and a taste for cruelty that sent fear rippling through even their fellow soldiers.
Asha slipped and slid a few feet down the rocky slope. Her shin caught on a rock, cutting her leg deeply as she slid. She caught herself before she cried out in pain. She didn’t enjoy the same brazenness as the others. She needed every advantage, even though there were none.
Climb faster, %##%! Even the hill rejects your feeble strides!
was yelled from the men behind her. The expletive was a reference to how they would violate her when they caught her. She couldn’t let that happen, not just
