To my Lily lovers, this is for you.
Acknowledgments
Thank you so much to Karen Fuller and World Castle Publishing! You’re the reason these stories stay alive. I couldn’t do it without you. Thank you to my family, friends, the members of the press, the business owners, and the community leaders who have supported my work. You guys are great! And even though he can’t read (because he’s a dog), thank you to my baby boy, Zeus, for making me smile every single morning. You’re the best boy I could ask for, and my fingers are crossed for many more years together. And a special thank you to Ryann Renae for giving Lily a voice through our song As Always, Yours
. It was so much fun working on that project, and I hope we partner again in the future! Lastly, thank you to my readers, especially those who have stayed with me every step of the way. This is our ninth journey together! I hope you feel a whole variety of emotions while reading this book, and most importantly, I hope it makes your heart happy.
"When to the sessions of sweet silent thought
I summon up remembrance of things past,
I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought,
And with old woes new wail my dear time’s waste:
Then can I drown an eye, unus’d to flow,
For precious friends hid in death’s dateless night,
And weep afresh love’s long since cancell’d woe,
And moan th’ expense of many a vanish’d sight;
Then can I grieve at grievances foregone,
And heavily from woe to woe tell o’er
The sad account of fore-bemoaned moan,
Which I new pay as if not paid before.
But if the while I think on thee, dear friend,
All losses are restor’d, and sorrows end."
Sonnet 30
by William Shakespeare
Prologue
Beth’s cries echoed throughout the house as she woke for the third time in two hours. She was a beautiful baby with pretty, strawberry blonde hair and bright blue eyes, but there was rarely a night when she slept more than a few hours at a time. Beth had just turned one year old, but her fussiness hadn’t lessened. She was often sick and underweight. Rowan and I didn’t know what to do. The doctors told us she was fine, but that clearly wasn’t the case.
Rowan sat up in bed, sighing. I’ll get her. Go back to sleep, baby.
I nodded and rolled over onto my side. Sometimes, I felt like I barely slept at all. My twins, John and Mina, had just started preschool. The days were quiet, but when they came home, the whole house was filled with chaos. Of course, I loved all of them. It was still hard, though. I had become a mother at twenty and was now twenty-five with three children. I loved my husband and my life, but that didn’t make any of it easier.
Rowan came back into the room with Beth in his arms. She was still crying but quieter now. He held a bottle and was trying to convince her to drink from it. She hated them. Nothing made her happy other than breastfeeding, but we were trying to wean her off of it. I could only do so much.
He sat beside me and finally convinced Beth to drink from her bottle. I relished in the temporary silence, and he did, too. Rowan was always tired. He was a phenomenal husband, and he always gave one hundred percent. But he was just a man, and running the business full-time, as well as being the father of three children, took all of the energy out of him. Rowan had just recently completed his master’s degree. I was incredibly proud of him, but sometimes I wondered if it had sucked all of the happiness out of his life. We rarely ever had time alone, and I felt cut off from my husband. Our love life was suffering.
I watched as he rocked her back and forth, never giving up. He was still so beautiful. His appearance had barely changed at all since the moment I’d met him. Our anniversary was coming up, but Rowan still looked as perfect as he had when we were eighteen. The only difference was his eyes no longer seemed to glow. The energy Rowan had once possessed was all gone. I didn’t love him any less, but I did miss the way his smile used to light up a room. Now, it was strained and exhausted, almost forced.
Still, every Friday, he brought me a fresh bouquet of a dozen white roses and some of my favorite chocolate-covered cherries. Rowan never gave up, no matter how exhausted he was. Still, we rarely ever had dates without at least one child tagging along. Rowan’s aunt Marie normally kept the twins, but Beth refused to stay with anyone other than the two of us. The one time we had tried to go to dinner alone, Beth had screamed for two whole hours, leaving Marie clueless as to what to do. Now, we took all three of them with us and spent the nights trying to control two preschool twins and a screaming baby.
I wanted so badly to get away. Sometimes, I wished I could just stay in bed all day and disappear into the covers. But every morning at eight, Rowan left to drop John and Mina off at school and open the bookstore. I spent the day at home with Beth, doing laundry, cooking, and cleaning. It was nice to be able to spend time with my baby, but I craved the days when I used to have adult interaction. I wanted real conversations and actual communication. I rarely ever had time to discuss adult topics with anyone. All I ever heard was crying, kids’ movies, and the chatter of my twins.
Rowan let out a long sigh and placed our sleeping baby down in the bassinet beside our bed. We wanted her to learn to sleep in her own room, but often, it was easier to leave her with us. She cried less when we were in the same room. Rowan laid back down and wrapped his arms around me. I cuddled closer against his shoulder, enjoying his familiar scent. This was the only time we were ever alone. During the day, I
