About this ebook

Eighth-grader Jared Shotpouch loved lacrosse—until his grandmother moved them off the reservation. Now he’s at a new school and on a new team where nothing feels right. The other kids tease Jared about everything from his last name to his long, braided hair—and the worst bullies are his own teammates. Can Jared prove his skills on the field and teach his teammates about the origins of lacrosse at the same time?

Jake Maddox

Who is Jake Maddox? Athlete, author, world-traveler – or all three? He has surfed in Hawaii, scuba-dived in Australia, and climbed the mountains of Peru and Alaska. His books range from the most popular team sports to outdoor activities to survival adventures and even to auto racing. His exploits have inspired numerous writers to walk in his footsteps – literally! Each of his stories is stamped with teamwork, fair play, and a strong sense of self-worth and discipline. Always a team-player, Maddox realizes it takes more than one man (or woman) to create a book good enough for a young reader. He hopes the lessons learned on the court, field, or arena and the champion sprinter pace of his books can motivate kids to become better athletes and lifelong readers.

    CHAPTER 1

    OFF TO A BAD START

Thud! The hard white ball landed in the grass a few yards in front of Jared Shotpouch. He lowered his stick and ran to scoop it up. It was the first lacrosse practice at his new school, and he wanted to impress the coaches, especially since he’d missed tryouts over the summer.

But before he could get there, Ryan Patrick, another member of the middle school lacrosse team, cut in from the side. He scooped the ball and ran toward the goal.

Too slow, pony boy! Ryan yelled back over his shoulder.

Coach Hunter must not have heard the taunt because he clapped his hands on the sidelines and said, Faster when going for the loose balls, Shotpouch!

Jared felt his neck—right where his long ponytail hung—get hot. He knew his teammates, especially the other boys playing attack, were laughing and cheering on Ryan’s steal. But all Jared could hear were his own panting breaths and the thoughts in his head.
