    Rekindled Faith - Philip DeLizio

    CHAPTER 1

    A CHANCE ENCOUNTER

    A Sunday Morning at Church

The sun shone through the windows of the Westside Community Church, casting beams of light across the wooden pews. Hymns of praise echo off the high ceiling as the congregation sings in acapella, harmonious union. There is a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with pews arranged in neat rows facing the altar. The altar itself is adorned with flowers and candles, creating a peaceful and sacred space.

This is a place that encourages reflection and reverence. Olivia sat between her parents, tugging at the fancy dress her mother had picked out. She always found the sermons a bit dull, even if the message of faith and goodness was important. Gazing up, she wonders what Jesus would say to make faith feel truly alive. As the service neared its close, Olivia fidgeted with the hem of her skirt. She spies her little brother playing with toy figurines near the aisle and stifles a giggle.

14-year-old Olivia Hanson has long brown hair and green eyes. She is of average height and build for her age. She usually dresses in modest, stylish clothes and sometimes wears a small cross necklace. She comes from an affluent family and lives in a nice neighborhood. Her parents are both successful professionals. She has one sibling, a younger brother named Ethan. They are a close-knit family that spends a lot of time together. They attend church every Sunday, as her parents have always emphasized the importance of faith in their lives.

Growing up had been an interesting journey for Olivia. She has always been the curious kind, always questioning things around her and seeking deeper meaning. Her parents always encouraged her intellectual pursuits and education, so she has had many opportunities to learn and grow. However, despite the privileges she has had, she struggled to find a deeper connection with her faith. Attending church every Sunday with her family has been a constant, but she has often felt like something is amiss. She has been on a quest to understand and explore her faith more deeply and to find that sense of connection for which she longs.

The Hansons live in a charming suburban neighborhood in the town of Meadowville. The streets are lined with well-kept houses, and there are plenty of trees and gardens that add to the beauty of the area. It is a close-knit community where people often know and support one another.

Olivia knows most of her neighbors. There are a few who even stand out to her. The Smiths, an older couple who have lived next door for as long as she can remember. They are incredibly kind and always ready to lend a helping hand. They have a beautiful garden that they take great pride in. Sometimes, Olivia will stop by just to admire their flowers and have a chat.

Another favorite neighbor is Mrs. Jenkins, a retired teacher who lives across the street. She is a wise and compassionate woman, always willing to share her knowledge and experiences. Olivia will often find herself seeking her advice when faced with difficult decisions or needing guidance. She feels these neighbors have truly enriched the community with their warmth and kindness. They make living there feel like being part of an extended family. It is quite comforting to know that they can rely on one another, and Olivia is grateful for their presence in her life.

The Hanson home is quite spacious and comfortable. When you first walk in, there is a cozy foyer with a small table where keys and such are kept. The walls are painted a warm cream color, and there is a soft carpet beneath your feet. On the left is a cozy living room with plush sofas and bookshelves filled with all sorts of novels, Bibles, and philosophical texts.

Adjacent to the living room is the dining area, with a large wooden table where the family gathers for meals. The room is adorned with artwork and a display cabinet filled with precious family heirlooms. Beyond the dining area is our kitchen, with sleek countertops and modern appliances.

Upstairs, you will find the bedrooms. Olivia’s room is her sanctuary for reflection and meditation. It is lined with soft lighting and a desk where she writes and ponders life's big questions. Ethan’s room is filled with his favorite toys and posters. The Hansons’ bedroom is elegant and serene, with a comfortable bed and a view of the garden outside.

Olivia has always been empathetic towards others and has a strong desire to help those in need. It is something that has been instilled in her by her parents from a young age. She finds fulfillment in volunteering and making a positive impact in her community. Growing up in Meadowville has been a journey of self-discovery, questioning, and seeking ways to connect more deeply with her faith and make a difference in the world. And she has achieved a bit on all the things, but one, and that is connecting more deeply with her faith.

As church services were coming to a close, Janice was rushing down the sidewalk a few blocks away, panting as she dashed toward the church. She glances fretfully at her watch and curses under her breath at the late hour. Her grandmother had already left for the morning service, unwilling to be held back by Janice's poor timekeeping.

The previous night, Janice had worked a double shift at the diner owned by her grandmother’s friend, which was how she was able to work at the age of 14 just to earn some extra cash. Exhaustion dragged on her weary body, but she knew rest would have to wait. Sunday service with her grandma was non-negotiable.

Janice Thompson is a resilient and spiritual kid whose background has been shaped by some tough experiences. She lost her parents at an early age in a traffic accident, which was an incredibly difficult time for her. It plunged her into the foster care system, which was a challenging and uncertain time in her life. But thankfully, Janice’s grandmother fought to adopt her and has since become her rock.

She lives in a small neighborhood, tucked away in a peaceful corner of town, away from the ‘nice’ houses where Olivia lives. Although it may not be the most glamorous or bustling neighborhood, it is a place that feels like home to Janice as it is comforting and offers a safe environment. Her neighborhood is close to a small park with a playground where children can be seen playing and laughing on sunny afternoons.

Within walking distance to Janice’s house is a small grocery store and a few independently owned businesses that serve the community. The Westside Community Church is within walking distance, too, but walking there takes a while.

Janice’s home is cozy and filled with love. It is not noticeably big, but it is her safe haven. There is a small living room where she spends most of her good time with her grandmother and a simple kitchen where her grandmother prepares delicious meals. Janice’s bedroom is her little sanctuary, filled with books and a desk where she reads and writes whenever she can. The Thompsons may not have much but they happily make the most of what they do have. Home truly is where the heart is, and Janice is profoundly grateful for the warmth and love that fills her humble space.

Janice is African American, pretty, and of average height with a slender build. She has curly black hair that she usually ties up in a messy bun. Her warm brown eyes often reflect deep thoughtfulness. She has a scar above her left eyebrow from a childhood fall, which she wears proudly. If you ask her, she will say she has a simple and natural look, nothing extraordinary. She has come to embrace her looks as a part of who she is.

Losing her parents at such an early age taught Janice the value of cherishing the time we have with our loved ones. It also made her grow up faster and take on more responsibilities to help support her grandmother financially. It has not always been easy, but Janice says it has made her a stronger person. Being in foster care taught her the importance of empathy and compassion. She saw firsthand the struggles that many other kids faced. It motivated her to give back and help others and her grandmother has shown her what it means to be selfless and to love unconditionally.

All these experiences have played a significant role in shaping who Janice is today. They have taught her resilience, empathy, and the importance of having faith in both her and in something or someone greater than she was. Life has thrown its fair share of challenges her way, but she tries her best to view them as opportunities for growth and learning. Janice believes that everything happens for a reason, even if it is difficult to understand at that moment. Sure, there have been times when she felt frustrated or overwhelmed by circumstances, but she has learned to channel those emotions into fuel for personal growth. Forced to grow up quicker than a child would want, she has chosen to focus on the positives in her life, like the love and support of her grandmother and the friendships she formed along the way.

Being bitter does not serve any purpose, Janice has learned, and it only weighs you down. Instead, she chooses to have faith and trust in the belief that life has a way of working itself out. While she has faced many challenges, she tries to approach them with resilience and a hopeful mindset, letting go of bitterness and embracing the opportunities for growth that they provide.

As the church building came into view, Janice pushed her tired legs to move faster. Her now-unbound hair blew wildly in the wind, strands sticking to her damp cheeks. The plain dress chosen from haste bore wrinkles and stains from her labor. As she entered the church, the large oak doors burst open with a bang, drawing
