Chapter One
Does it still hurt?
A little.
Nathan Ward slipped on his coat carefully. The wound ached but not as bad now. The stitches had dissolved, but a scar remained. The worst were the nightmares, though. He regularly woke up in a cold sweat after dreaming of wickedly sharp teeth tearing into his arm. As the dream faded, dark red eyes entered his mind. He thought he recalled a name—Silas—but couldn’t be sure. What he did remember was a red mist flowing from him and into the man’s mouth.
Nate?
Nathan shook his head to clear it of those thoughts. It had been four weeks, and he hadn’t heard anything else from the cops. I’m good.
Brooke didn’t seem terribly convinced, but she let it go. We need to get going. Class starts in about half an hour.
Yeah.
Nathan grabbed his backpack, slung it onto his right shoulder, and gestured toward the door. His sister went out first, and he shut the door, locking it before catching up with her. Outside, it was cold but, thankfully, not snowing. Still, he was glad they’d found an apartment close to school. He tried not to drive too much, considering gas prices were off the fucking charts.
Anymore thoughts on your paper topic?
Brooke asked him as they walked down the sidewalk.
Nathan shrugged. Not really. In all honesty, I’m still trying to get my head back to normal.
Brooke nodded. I know. Any word from the cops about the attack?
Not yet,
Nathan said. I should probably give them a call, though, just to check in on it. At the very least, it would let me sleep better if I knew who—or what—it had been.
Very true,
Brooke said with a nod. On a totally different note, Kelly, Elena, and I are going to Vapor tonight. Wanna go?
Sure. Not like I’ve got much else to do.
Brooke grinned. Cool.
They reached the science building and stopped just inside the lobby.
Catch you after class,
Brooke said before giving him a hug.
Nathan nodded. Later, Sis.
He headed upstairs to his first class, ready for the day to be over. He had way too much on his mind to focus today.
* * *
By the time Nathan got home, he was debating on bailing for the night, but he’d promised Brooke he’d go, so here he stood, staring into his closet for something to wear. He’d only been to Vapor once, and he’d sort of felt like a fish out of water. Brooke, with her eternally-goth appearance, fit in perfectly, but Nathan had never quite fit in, well, anywhere.
Sighing, he figured he’d go for middle ground and grabbed his lone pair of black vinyl pants and the black poet’s shirt Brooke had bought him two years ago. Actually, she’d bought both pieces of clothing, claiming he had zero style. He finished dressing just as the front door opened. He did have a pair of black boots, at least. He got them on
