    Chapter 1

    N ext! says Tiana as she waves the next customer to me. It's been exactly fifteen minutes of us working together. The only grocery store in this small town, and the only business that hires all the time, is Big Ben’s Grocery. It's getting busy with the longer lines from all the 12 p.m. traffic. As a cashier, I stand here moving the customers' groceries over to be bagged by someone from the meat department. It feels like I’ve been working all day. I can’t lose this job. It took forever to get this one, and I need it badly. 

    Hey, how are you, my name is Amanda, I say as I watch this elderly man struggle to get the cans out of his shopping cart.

    Someone needs to open up another register, he says.

    What I should say would be very distasteful, but it's my first day here and luckily Tiana was quick with a response. I noticed her height immediately, and the same for everyone else I meet. Pushing the screen of the register down was the first thing she did once we introduced ourselves. She is not shy and kept asking me a hundred questions about where I'm from and why I chose to work here. I can never tell the difference between someone genuinely interested or prying into my business, but I answer anyway.

    Sir, we have all our workers at the register for you to check out. Do you need help taking your groceries out of the cart? says Tiana. I’ve noticed she’s so quick on her feet since she’s been here after the first cashier on shift trained me. The first one, Michele, was so talkative, sweet, and funny. Michele was eating the entire time. I couldn’t eat while working considering I touch all the butchered meat juice once I scan it in for purchase. Tiana seems more my style. I make sure to clock in and work as much as I can, so I
