Self-Employed Tax Credits (SETC) are financial incentives designed to alleviate the tax burdens faced by self-employed individuals, especially those impacted by economic challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Established under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA), the SETC allows qualifying individuals to claim a refundable, non-taxable credit of up to $32,220. This credit is particularly significant as it directly supports the financial stability of self-employed individuals, including sole proprietors and 1099 contractors, by offsetting costs associated with sick leave and family leave during periods of health crises or caregiving responsibilities.[1][2]
In addition to the SETC, self-employed individuals can benefit from the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which is aimed at low- to moderate-income taxpayers. The EITC can result in substantial tax refunds, yet it remains underutilized as many eligible individuals fail to claim it.
