About this ebook
The content of this book is the culmination of a life long quest for martial arts knowledge and expertise by Grand Master Ed Hartzell (Soke). The founder and creator of the Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Jujutsu self defense system.
Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Jujutsu is a comprehensive and well rounded self defense martial art system. The base root of Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Jujutsu can be traced back historically to both Japanese and Chinese martial arts through the lineage of James Masayoshi Mitose. James Mitose brought his family art, Kosho Shorei-ryu Kenpo to the U.S. (Hawaii) from Japan in 1937. Kosho Shorei-ryu Kenpo can be further traced back to the Shaolin Monks and the Kung Fu arts in China. Kosho Shorei-ryu Kenpo consists of both spiritual arts and martial arts. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, James Mitose renamed the system he was teaching to Kenpo Jiu-Jitsu. This was only the martial art component of Kosho Shorei-ryu Kenpo, due to being in war time. Thus, the lineage is; Grand Master Ed Hartzell received training from Grand Master Nimar Hassan; who received training from Grand Master James Mitose.
Grand Master Ed Hartzell generously shares his accumulated martial arts knowledge and expertise he gathered from decades of training, instruction and study in numerous martial art systems and disciplines. Throughout his martial arts career, Grand Master Ed Hartzell incorporated the best working parts and components from other martial art systems and disciplines, into the base root of the Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Jujutsu. Namely; Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Shorin-ryu Chinese Kempo, Mudokwan, Wing Chun, Aikido, Chi Ling Pai Ying Jaw Chuan system and many, many others.
Through hard work and life long commitment, Grand Master Ed Hartzell utilized the proven results of empirical analysis, math, science and history, to develop and finely hone the principals, techniques and methods incorporated into Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Jujutsu self defense system. This approach allowed Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Jujutsu to evolve and grow into an effective and successful self defense martial art system over time. Thereby, garnering the best that select martial art systems had to offer.
Many notable masters and uncountable students have been trained under the tutelage of Grand Master Ed Hartzell. Notably, Grand Master Jerry Otto, Grand Master Kurt Fritz, Master Bob Lederach, Master Mark Jefferson (Shihan) and myself, Master Richard Brescia Jr., just to name a few.
All levels of martial art practitioners; young, old, beginner or advanced, will benefit from the information in this book on self defense. The reader will be exposed to a diverse wealth of self defense knowledge and experience.
Increased focus, discipline, confidence, positive attitude, leadership, reaching personal goals, etc., can be realized.
Aspects of philosophy, physics, geometry, anatomy, historical perspective, meditation, balance, economy of motion, body dynamics, proper breathing, visualization, ki/chi energy development and more are covered.
Proven and effective self defense training, conditioning, techniques, tactics and methods are addressed. Particularly, punching/striking, kicking/sweeping, throwing, escaping, stances, balance and kata are examined.
When the depth of the subject matter and tools within this book are closely examined, studied, further explored and researched; many more paths to martial arts knowledge and enlightenment will be discovered by the reader.

I wrote this reference manual on self-defense as a legacy to my Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Jujutsu family of students, past and present. Furthermore, I had an additional goal to share this content, knowledge, and experience to the benefit of the public.
In the course of many years, I compiled, revised, and amended the content of this text with the help and assistance of a small select group of Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Jujutsu black belts and masters.
In particular, I would like to thank Sensei Phil Nicolosi, who was instrumental in contributing and compiling subject-matter content, pictorial demonstrations, and revisions. His time and dedication to this endeavor were invaluable.
Moreover, I would like to thank Tashi Richard Brescia Jr., who contributed to subject-matter editing, revision, sequencing, graphical layout clarity, and amendments. His time and commitment to this enterprise are greatly appreciated.
Finally and foremost, I would like to extend a special thanks to Shihan Mark Jefferson, who contributed his time, efforts, and loyalty to prepare this text for publication. He is solely responsible for making my goal of public access to this content a reality. Thank you, brother!

All that I have studied and all that I have lived have culminated in the essence of what is the Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Ju-Jutsu System and Kosho Kenpo Ryu schools and temples. None of what I have tried to show the masters and students have been for the glory of self, but for the belief in one's life and gifts he has been given. No one has been more humbled than me.
If I had never had a student, nothing in my training would have changed. This is the study of one's own life, and the study is for life. Look at your training, look at your life, make them equal, and balance each other.
Every style has a place, but no one style is the answer; we draw conclusions from all. Kenpo has always been, for us, the foundation of our style. Or the point of origin. As students, we always seek out knowledge from other sources. We use what is true, which can enhance our mental and physical training. Also, it must follow the teachings of the Shin Ju System. One thing I have learned in all these years is not to ignore something because it is different. Many times, that difference is a key to something greater than you can see now. However, as you grow, your vision will also change and become clearer.
Advice to Students, Teachers, and Masters of the Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Ju-Jutsu System
This is the pathway you choose to follow and improve yourself as a person. It gives you the ability to defend what is right and just. It is your choice to make this decision to sacrifice for personal growth. Remember that most of us are not alone in our sacrifice. The people we love and the people that love us also take part in that choice, but usually gain very little. Always be aware of those you love. Understand their feelings and questions. This system is a system of love, family, compassion, and trust. Please do not sacrifice the very people who mean the most to you. Make your choices in life with wisdom and compassion. If you choose correctly, there will be time for all. All your rewards will be shared by the people in your life who mean the most to you and those who have been there through it all. Always remember, they are giving up a lot for you too. Love and respect them for their sacrifice.
We study our art, so we never have to use it.
We train to conquer ourselves, not someone else.
We train to gain insight into a better, more fulfilling future.
Not to deny a future to those who do not believe as we do.
We train in violence to gain peace.
If you chase the end,
You will always
