    It began with the smell of the shore, pungent and briny, and the myriad sounds of the ocean. The dull roar of the breakers around the bend, the shhh-shhh closer at hand where eddies hissed in the rising tide, and the slapping of the waves against the heavy wooden pylons and the aluminum sides of the (so-called) ferry that brought me to Byrne Island that late September morning.

    The first moment, in a series of moments, that changed everything I knew.

    I had been musing about those sounds, that strange disparate chorus always coming together to say this is the sea in a way no others could. I had also not been watching my footing as I stepped down onto the dock, and so pitched forward, unbalanced by my oversized backpack and heavy satchel. Seconds from destroying my livelihood in the drink.

    And out of the fog, suddenly, a hand appeared at my elbow, steadying me with a strong grip and a low, throaty chuckle. All right there?

    I stared at a figure wreathed in fog and cold morning light. A creature of the elements, even in an oversized gray hoodie and jeans. Hair a halo of silvery strands that stirred with a life of their own. Eyes, wide and solemn, gray as the morning, startling in their clarity and lightness.

    Thanks, I finally said, too startled to even feel embarrassed. I stood there, entranced, as a breeze lifted hairs on the back of my neck and caused the fog to swirl around us both.

    I stepped back…but still couldn’t tear my gaze away, and so watched this other person’s expression go from amused, to wary, to thoughtful in a matter of seconds.

    I had given my mysterious savior pause, perhaps presented a puzzle.

    I wasn’t supposed to be doing that.

    So I ducked my gaze and busied myself with adjusting my backpack and turning to lift my bicycle off of the boat. When I looked up again, the gray figure was gone.
