Home-Based Solutions for Common Diabetes Complications - Dr. Md. Farooque Abdullah

    Diabetes Overview

Diabetes mellitus is classified into several types that have different causes and modes of management. Major types of diabetes include Types 1 and 2, gestational diabetes, among a few more rare types otherwise known.

Type 1 diabetes: This is an autoimmune type of disease whereby the immune system behaves abnormally to attack or destroy the beta pancreatic cells, which produce insulin. The onset of the disease usually occurs during childhood and adolescence, although it can be diagnosed at any age. Since individuals with Type 1 diabetes produce very little to no insulin at all, they are bound to take exogenous insulin for sugar control within their blood. As such, monitoring the ensured sugar in the blood must be implemented with an eye towards avoiding hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.

Type 2 diabetes: This is secondary to a combination of insulin resistance—whereby the body cells develop a resistance to insulin—and a relative deficiency of insulin. It remains the most common form of diabetes, usually occurring in people over 45 years. However, coupled with pandemics of obesity, an increased sedentary lifestyle has resulted in ever-increasing numbers of cases to be diagnosed yearly amongst younger people. Type 2 diabetes is powerfully related to modifiable risk factors, the most prominent of which is poor diet, poor physical activity, and resultant obesity. On most occasions, it materialises lifestyle changes in diet interventions and exercise and, at some later stage of the progression of the disease, oral medicines or insulin therapy.

Gestational diabetes: a carbohydrate intolerance whereby the body produces too little insulin to meet its increased needs during pregnancy, resulting in high blood sugar. This usually subsides after delivery, though a woman who has had this condition has an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes at a later stage in her life. Treating and managing sugar levels in a pregnant gestational diabetes person includes a high-performance diet combined with exercise. It ensures both mother and baby are in good health.

Apart from these major types, there are also 'other specific types of diabetes' resulting from specific genetic conditions, pancreatic surgery, or the use of certain medications. This would mean monogenic diabetes, caused by a single gene mutation, and secondary diabetes, which comes as the consequence of another disease or condition. These issues are less common, but it is key to recognise them if one is to recognise all cases of diabetes.

    Common Complications and Their Effects

Diabetes can bring to pass a wide range of complications, which no doubt do affect various systems within the human body. The general causative factors of these complications usually relate to long periods or durations of high blood sugar levels that may cause a lot of damage to blood vessels and nerves. A discussion regarding some of the common complications of diabetes and their effects on health has been given below.

This implies that a person who has diabetes may be grappling with a number of key complications, including cardiovascular disease. Diabetes further enhances this process of atherosclerosis, a type of disease where plaque deposits in the arterial system, hence constricting natural flow and possibly causing severe cardiovascular events like myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral artery disease. High blood pressure Most people with diabetes have high blood pressure; thus, this risks making other organs vulnerable. Proper management of blood sugar and heart-healthy lifestyle changes reduce cardiovascular risk relatively.

Neuropathy: This is another classic example of a diabetes complication; it is a type of nerve damage that is a result of very high blood sugar for a long time. It can also affect the nerves in the extremities, particularly in the feet and legs. Diabetic neuropathy thus manifests as pain, tingling, numbness, and even muscular weakness. In extreme conditions, this can result in ulcers on the feet and infections, simply due to the lessening of sensation and lack of healing ability. Good foot care and well-fitting shoes are the most important things, along with good blood sugar control, for the management and prevention of neuropathy.

Retinopathy: This is related to the eyes, and it ultimately causes the blindness or blurring of vision if untreated. Diabetic retinopathy is defined as damage to the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It is one of the common complications related to diabetes and a leading cause of blindness among such patients. In other words, regular examination of the eye is of importance since its timely treatment can, to some extent, prevent or slow the progressive process of retinopathy. Besides, it will help manage sugar levels and blood pressure, which are two critical risk factors for preserving eye health.

Nephropathy: damage to the kidneys due to longstanding diabetes. The kidneys are the organs that filter waste products in the blood. Prolonged high blood sugar levels are likely to be hazardous to their function and cause diabetic nephropathy. Diabetic nephropathy progresses to kidney failure, which might need treatment by dialysis even as a bridge to kidney transplant treatment. Keeping blood glucose near normal and monitoring kidney function and blood pressure are preventive measures for and management of
