Introduction: The Wealth Equation is More Than Numbers
When I was 23, I thought I had life figured out. I had just landed a decent job after graduating college, and I was finally starting to earn real money. Like many people in their early twenties, I assumed the path to financial success was simple: save a portion of your income, invest wisely, and, eventually, you’d be wealthy. That was the plan, and I thought I was off to a great start. I created budgets, read books on investing, and started tracking my spending down to the penny.
But despite all the planning, something didn’t feel right. I’d set financial goals, only to miss them month after month. I impulsively bought things I didn’t need, falling into the trap of treating myself
because I deserved it after working so hard. My savings barely grew, and when it came time to invest, I hesitated. I feared making the wrong choice and losing everything I had worked so hard to save.
I couldn’t figure out why, with all this financial knowledge, I wasn’t making progress. I felt stuck, like something was holding me back from achieving the financial success I knew was possible. That feeling of being stuck wasn’t unique to me—it’s something many of us go through.
And then, one conversation changed everything.
A Janitor and a CEO: The Story That Changed My Perspective
ONE EVENING, OVER DINNER with a friend, I heard a story that would change the way I thought about wealth forever. My friend was telling me about two people he knew: one was a janitor, the other was a CEO of a successful company. Both men were in their sixties, and both had lived very different lives. The CEO, as you’d expect, had made a lot of money over his career. He lived in a big house, drove an expensive car, and took lavish vacations. The janitor, on the other hand, had always worked modest jobs and lived a simple life.
But here’s the twist—despite the CEO’s impressive income, he was always strapped for cash. He was living paycheck to paycheck, deeply in debt, and worried about his financial future. The janitor, on the other hand, had quietly amassed a fortune. He had a sizable investment portfolio, no debt, and enough savings to live comfortably for the rest of his life.
That story hit me like a ton of bricks. How could someone with a modest income build wealth, while someone earning millions struggled to stay afloat? What was the difference between them?
The difference, I realized, was the mindset.
Behavior Over Knowledge
We all tend to think of wealth in terms of numbers—how much we make, how much we save, and how well we invest. But as I discovered, wealth isn’t just a math problem. It’s a mindset. The janitor in that story didn’t become wealthy because he had access to more financial knowledge than the CEO. He became wealthy because he had the right mindset.
That was a lightbulb moment for me. I had spent years focusing on strategies, financial products, and spreadsheets, thinking that if I just found the perfect formula, I’d unlock the door to financial freedom. But no formula could make up for the fact that I wasn’t addressing my underlying behaviors, habits, and beliefs about money.
The truth is, that how we think about money, the stories we tell ourselves about wealth, and the behaviors we engage in every day are what determine our financial outcomes. The janitor understood something that most of us overlook: wealth isn’t about how much you earn—it’s about how you think and how you behave.
