1-1 ESL Activities For Teenagers & Adults - Jackie Bolen
About the Author: Jackie Bolen
I taught English in South Korea for a decade to every level and type of student, including every age from kindergarten kids to adults. These days, I'm living in Vancouver and teaching English to a variety of students. In my spare time, you can usually find me outside surfing, biking, hiking or on the hunt for the most delicious kimchi I can find.
In case you were wondering what my academic qualifications are, I hold a Master of Arts in Psychology. During my time in Korea, I completed both the Cambridge CELTA and DELTA certification programs. With the combination of years teaching ESL/EFL learners of all ages and levels, and the more formal teaching qualifications I've obtained, I have a solid foundation on which to offer teaching advice. I truly hope that you find this book useful and would love it if you sent me an email with any questions or feedback that you might have—I'll always take the time to personally respond (jb.business.online@gmail.com).

How to Use this Book
We think that teaching 1-on-1 classes is quite difficult! While teachers don't have the same classroom management issues that they would with a group of 30 or 40 students, 1-on-1 classes are demanding in different ways. The first difficultly is that the majority of the activities or games that teachers would normally use in a classroom setting don't work when it's just one teacher and one student. The other reason is that it's more demanding on the teacher because he/she is required to interact the entire time—unlike in a classroom setting where a teacher normally sets up an activity and lets students work with a partner or in small groups.
Despite these difficulties, it is indeed possible to have engaging, interesting and productive 1-on-1 classes that don't leave you exhausted. We're confident that through using these activities, your classes will be varied, fun and useful, and your lesson planning will be made easy. Try them out and please let us know which ones worked for you, which ones didn't and/or any new ideas for 1-on-1 activities that you have. We always appreciate any feedback from our readers.
So, dig in and kick that 1-on-1 lesson planning into high-gear with this book! The vast majority of your 1-on-1 teenage or adult students are highly-motivated, and ready for whatever challenges you can throw at them.
Top 10 Tips for Private Tutoring Lessons
Here are my 10 tips for private ESL teaching to teenagers and adults.
Personalize Lessons
Tailor the lessons to the student’s interests, goals, and level. Ask about their hobbies, career, and preferences to make lessons engaging. Teens may prefer pop culture topics, while adults might enjoy discussions about global issues or work-related vocabulary.
It can certainly save time to recycle lessons from student to student, but only do this when it's applicable! I generally have around 10 timeless, works with any student kind of lessons in a Google Drive folder. I use a mix of these along with personalized lesson plans for each student. A balance is best!
Focus on Communication
Prioritize speaking and listening skills. Both teens and adults want to communicate effectively, so encourage conversation by using role plays, discussions, or debates on topics they find relevant.
Don't correct every single error as this can be quite demoralizing in a private lessons. Instead, focus on errors that are repeated multiple times and also those that impede communication.
Incorporate Real-Life Materials
Use authentic materials (also known as realia) like news articles, podcasts, videos, and social media. For teenagers, incorporate music lyrics, YouTube clips, or social media posts. For adults, news articles, TED talks, or workplace documents can be effective. Using realia can be very motivating for students and help increase their confidence.
Be Patient and Flexible
Each student learns at a different pace, especially in a private setting. Allow flexibility in lesson pacing and be patient with errors. Adjust your methods if something
