    Chapter 1

Fifteen years slid by since Blake Denton last drove this winding route. For some reason, this path off the country lane leading to the old-fashioned farmhouse elongated since the long-ago night. His knuckles whitened around the steering wheel, gripped it harder than needed to control the SUV. The tires hit a pothole the shock absorbers couldn’t quite handle.

Holy crap, Blake! Isn’t this thing paved? Sullivan Fitzgerald cursed and grabbed the oh shit bar.

Nope. Money is put where it’s needed most on a farm. Blake maneuvered around another pothole. Rather, he went around the ones he could see under the layers of snow. Everyone drives big-ass trucks and SUVs to handle this kind of shit. Otherwise, they’re on tractors, which roll over anything in their path. They probably don’t even know about them.

Sully flexed his fingers around the handle when the SUV rocked. Thank gawd you talked me out of driving my baby.

Blake snorted at the thought of Sully’s beloved, restored 1967 Mustang Shelby handling these roads.

These potholes would rip her undercarriage to shreds. Mess up her gorgeous wax job with this nasty, dirty snow. Yours is better equipped to handle all this bad-weather travel. Sully dropped his other hand on Blake’s thigh and rubbed back and forth. He pressed close to Blake’s muscled thighs under the tailored slacks and boxer-briefs. No matter what we’re driving, you know I wouldn’t have missed being here with you for anything in the world.

Blake glanced at his partner and lover. Peeling his fingers from the steering wheel, he entwined their fingers. I wouldn’t make this trip without your support, Sully. Especially around this time of the year. Christmastime we’re supposed to be with family. We always go to your family, never mine. Now look at us.

You’re taking a huge step forward and driving down to a backwater small town near the Blue Ridge mountains. Wanting to get in touch with your family at the best time of the year to forgive and start over was the best idea. How could I not support this decision?

I’m sorry we will not see your parents.

Don’t worry about them. My parents understand and send their love. We’ll see them next week.

Good. Good. I don’t want to miss them. They’ve been wonderful to me. Blake squeezed Sully’s fingers.

Your family. My chosen one. They love you as a son. Sully tugged Blake’s hand close long enough to kiss his fingers. Does anyone know we’re coming?

    My mother.

    Did she tell anyone else?

I asked her not to, considering Dad’s reaction to when I left fifteen years ago.
