Sean Whitehead mentioned in the podcast episode 10 from season 2 (Somebody ‘Alp’ me) that he went to Iceland and drove off the main roads to find this cool place in the mountains. I just came back from a trip to Iceland as well and as I was traveling through the country I saw a lot of trails, that lead from the main road into untouched nature. These scars do much damage to the surface, because the ground on Iceland is very soft and mushy due to its porous volcanic stones and ashes; it takes decades to heal and you can see these trails very clearly even after many years. There are actually brochures in every tourist information centre on Iceland telling you not to drive off-road. I also found amazing and impressive spots in Iceland while staying on the main roads. And yes, I know, tourists can be very annoying and can ruin this “I am alone in the mountains”-feeling, but there is a reason that these tourist-spots exist: to protect nature from everybody trample over untouched nature and leave behind human footprints. In 2010 there were about 480.000 tourists visiting Iceland, today the number has increased to 1,7 million people. So you see it is very important to protect this unique landscape as it is, as more and more tourists come to this place. Because the images of these tracks are still fresh in my mind, I wanted to tell you about this.
