Focal Utopia Main: 2 Ultra High-end Passive Monitoring Systems
4 decades of speaker design ingenuity comes together in the Utopia passive mains.
Introducing the Focal Utopia Main series, with two passive monitoring systems, each with a pair of powerful custom mono-block amplifiers.
New passive monitoring systems are unusual in 2025, let alone in the upper echelons of the market. When I first saw the Utopia Main systems, I was immediately reminded of the classic Tannoy 215 DMT main monitors that were the standard in the pro studios of yesteryear.
Focal Utopia Main
The Utopia Main series has two options which we’ll discuss briefly, including the versatile 112 that can switch between vertical and horizontal configurations, and the installation-friendly 212.
Focal Utopia Main 112
The Utopia Main 112 is a 3-way passive monitor with a 13-inch high excursion subwoofer, a 5-inch midrange driver, and a 1.5-inch beryllium tweeter. Created as a pro studio mains system, the 112 promises incredibly high accuracy reproduction with ultra-low distortion levels, even in high SPL monitoring situations.
To shift the speaker positioning from vertical to horizontal, the plate containing the midrange and high-frequency drivers can be rotated in 90-degree steps. In addition, the MDF speaker enclosures have been constructed with reinforced bracing to reduce the chance of resonance considerably.
Each matched 112 pair includes two Class-H current-mode amplifiers with separate outputs for the tweeters, as well as for the woofer and midrange drivers.
Price: $29,999 MSRP
Focal Utopia Main 212
The larger 212 system uses a dual 13-inch subwoofer configuration for extended low-end headroom, a dual 5-inch midrange driver system, and a 1.5-inch beryllium tweeter.
Like the smaller 112, it’s built with rugged MDF enclosures that are 30mm in thickness. Also, the amplifiers are equipped with parametric EQs, volume controls for each driver, as well as high and low shelving filters.
Also, the 212 has been designed to produce equally comparable results in wall-mounted or freestanding configurations, and with a wide feature set to tune the system to your room, you can adjust it to perfection.
Price: $49,999 MSRP
