I got most of the references first time round--it's not an entirely light or pleasant or, well, fluffy read, but it is absolutely brilliant.(less)

The original Swedish version, there are actually three films, one for each book in the trilogy, hold much closer to the original story. Also available dubbed in English.
But still read the book, but not just the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo because despite having its own story and conclusion, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo can be described as a prologue to the real story, that you only discover when you read The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.
I read them then watched the Swedish film versions, then read again. I'm now reading for the third time.(less)

Fortunately, this popular book has been around so long, most library systems should have plenty of available copies in print/ebook/audiobook formats so you can listen while reading, or at least refer to the text now and then to keep character and place names straight.
