The Offering was an okay book. A little bit better than the second book but not better than the first. Nope, the first book was probably the best in my eyes (even though I rated the first and third book the same).
Charlie, who is still Queen, kind of does her own thing. She's still keeping the important stuff to herself when she should be talking to her people. She never sucks it up and admits that she doesn't know everything. She seriously needs to ask for help every now and then - but she doesn't which honestly annoys the crap out of me.
Besides Charlie being a stupid ass Queen and putting everyone in danger, every other character was 200 times better. Well, except for Brooklyn because she annoyed the shit out of me too. Those two character really need to grow the heck up. Eden, Xander, and Sage were the shit though. They made me keep turning the page. Those three made me want to know how this book was going to end. I was hooked and that trio of people made this book better in my eyes.
Overall, it was okay. This book definitely had flaws in my eyes and if characters did things or acted differently than my opinion on this book would probably be a lot better. I'm glad I took a chance on this series but I have no idea if I would dive into it ever again. Maybe.. but don't keep your hopes up.

This is a review for the whole series. Rating 1.5 stars.
There are some really good ideas and plot twists here and rich descriptions. But I think my main issue with this series is the world or lack of world building...
From all the descriptions throughout the series I picture the Capitol of Ludania to look something like this.
I mean its clear right from the start that there is hardly any technological advancement and it is also stated clearly on the blurb of my copy of the first book that this series is set in the far future. There are hints of apocalyptic times such as the mentioned Carbon Wars (forgive me if I'm missing any other key facts out as it was a few years since I last read the previous books) but from what I can remember there was no backstory on them. There was also the rule about how a queen must always rule and that she has magical abilities (most of the time) in her royal blood. There was no back story on how this came to be either. There was also no history of the languages the different classes spoke and how they came into place.
The lack of background history frustrated me throughout the series as on quite a few times when Charlie became fused with Sabara's essence she claimed she could see all the memories of Sabara's past BUT THEY NEVER REALLY WENT INTO WHAT THOSE MEMORIES CONTAINED! I'm sure if the author had indulged us a little even on the ancient queen's memories we could have had more clues as to how Charlie's world went from this ...
To something on the lines of this..
But it was not to be as revelations never came only snippets that gave me more questions. I don't know why or how so many people are fine with/ overlook this lack of history because it really frustrated me! One other friend told me that some authors like to give only hints of certain things such as descriptions and characters (and in this case world history) and prefer their readers to guess the rest and imagine these certain aspects on their own. Apparently lots of people like that. I'm not one of them. Ooohhh the frustration...... and there was just so much potential! AAaarrgghh!
Anyway now to go on to the things I did like about this series. The characters I felt were well developed and Charlie herself I could connect easily with. The author did a good job of bringing her to life. The writing style I also thought was very rich and high quality. I mean don't get me wrong the characters' situations and the present setting were all very well described just none about the past. The action, suspense and plot twists I also quite enjoyed but despite all this I still think this story would have been made better if the author had incorporated world history.
I would recommend this whole series to those who (you got it) don't mind filling gaps in themselves and like to only be given the foundation of a world to imagine the hows and whys of the world themselves. If you're like me and like the world building to be solid then I don't think this is for you.

I LOVED IT! Way better than the first and second in my opinion. A lot of action as well. I loved how all the characters grew stronger, each seemingly making their own sacrifices.
I just loved it. It's become one of my favourite series!

Like my initial reaction to this book: this was awesome
Kimberly Derting is a truly great author. It isn't often where I'll immediately pick up the other books in a series (if it's complete of course) so soon after reading the first one. And to be honest, I didn't even like The Pledge all that much. But I wanted to continue this trilogy.
I'm really glad I did because after finishing the second book and jumping into the third, I fell in love with it. Each book just got more exciting for me. I got to see Charlie grow as a queen, become so much more than that old Vendor girl she used to be—or still might be deep inside. Some parts are always hard to let go.
That statement would mainly go to Sabara. That lady—god I wanted to kill her. The author did a great job creating this villain, among others. To have your body make its own decisions and not be able to feel your own emotions...
I find it creepy enough when people touch me, even if it's the slightest brush of hands. To have someone control me like that—to has my own emotions battling me and confusing me and actually winning would just kill me. Of course, our little old Charlie is smarter and stronger than she looks. I wasn't kidding when I said she was growing.
Everyone is not what they seem apparently. Charlie can fight, Eden can be soft, Brook isn't into her heels anymore, little Angelina can talk—what even happened to everyone?
That was my main question. I loved how Derting didn't make it all of a sudden as well. She didn't perfect any of her characters in a matter of pages but slowly developed them to be stronger than what they initially came out to be.
I couldn't like Brooklynn as much however. In the first book she had already sort of annoyed me. As it continued, she just got more bitchy and rude. It came to the point where I could hardly stand reading from her point of view.
Kimberly Derting introduces her readers to a lot of new characters in the trilogy. From getting to know Max, we come to know more of Eden and her brother, more of Niko and Sage as well. She blends the characters in well with the plot, I think.
Overall, I just really fell in love with this series. I think I liked it better how Charlie's romance wasn't the main idea here as in so many other books. Nothing about "true love" or "will their romance be enough to conquer anything" shit. In a great twist, it has more to do with a creepy, selfish, and power hungry old queen trying to get her boyfriend back for another lifetime.
I just loved it. It's become one of my favourite series!

This was just so bad. I only read it because I had read the other two (didn't like them either) but for some reason I just had to know how it ended. Well, now I know. And it was ridiculous. I feel like the first of the series was ok….and then it was all downhill from there. But at least now I don't have to spend the rest of my life wondering how this came to an end…

This one may have been my favorite of the series and it still was just ok.
Once again, Queen Charlie decides that keeping important information to herself is best. You know, because this worked out so well for her last time. She puts everyone around her in danger all because she can't freaking ask for help. That's not a good Queen. A Queen has advisers for a reason. Let them advise!
What made this book interesting were the side characters: Eden, Xander, Sage - the ones who actually thought out plans and were smart about their actions. Eden in particular really drove this installment. And through that we got to see her past and why she is the way that she is. I really enjoyed learning more about her and wished that the author would have focused more on that character than some of the others. Also Sage, another good character who could have been expanded more instead we just barely grazed the surface of this Princess.
A character I could have used less of (beside Charlie): Brooklyn. Oh my god, her and her "I'm tough" "I'm commander" "I'm badass cause I wear leather." Bitch please. You manage to be annoying and destructive at the same time. I felt nothing for her throughout this entire series and really don't understand Aron's draw to her, but I guess the Ron/Hermione pairing needed to be included here. (More so the best friends of the main character getting together than actual Hermione smarts).
Overall, it was an ok series. It had some interesting parts, some good parts, and some not so good parts. I didn't get the love story aspect and I didn't really feel anything for Charlie. It's one that I'll probably forget about because it just wasn't memorable to me. *shrugs*

I really don't know how to start this review. There was so many things that bothered me, and it is very sad because being the last book of this series I really wanted to love it.
Charlie was a selfish worthless queen. Starting with lying to Max and not telling what was going on with Elena, then she decided Take Eden with her ( Brook tagged along)and played to be the hero that was going to save the kingdom , but why would she even trust Elena after sending Xander's hand? Did she really think that Elena would make peace?
Anyway the book was boring and Charlie, Eden and Brooke kept going in their boring little stupid adventure that nothing really happened until almost the end of the book.
But check this out, Eden went with Charlie because of Xander, she wanted to know what happened to him and maybe avenge him. The poor woman was destroyed when she saw Queen Elena's message. So when Elena got Charlie and she refused to let go of Sabara, Elena decided to kill Eden in front of Charlie. I cried and I was all mad that I had to stop reading the book for a few hours. Her dead was pointless because Charlie ended letting Sabara go anyway! So stupid Charlie let Eden die for Nothing!!!!!
Meanwhile , Sage, save Xander from Elena, and somehow in just 2 or 3 days they just fucking fell in love! When he learn of Eden's dead he was comforting with Sage , holding her hand. Dude ! Eden went all the way there for him! died in the fucking processes and he did not even show one damn tear??????
Anyway Charlie lies cost a lot of lives! Because of her lies Elena started the war and Ludania was not prepare for it. A lot of innocent people died, Eden died, The little kids with Caspar died, but hey! She still got her happy ending!
I forgot to mention that the poor Eden died with not knowing what happened to Xander.
And Max wasn't in the book a lot.

The book started out strong, then it dragged for a while, then around the 75% mark, it got good again.
At this point, I don't really know where I stand on the romance. It just didn't feel real or strong to me. I feel like I've been up and down throughout the series in terms of the romance.
While the middle chunk of the book dragged and the POV changes felt jerky to me, I did enjoy following Sage. I almost wish there was a bit more of her, I feel like Sage has her own story to tell (perhaps a spin-off? Please?!).
Now the action was good. Around the 80% mark I reached that gotta-read-because-my-heart-is-racing feeling that I love.
In terms of being the final book in the series, it feels complete, like Charlie's story has been told. The epilogue felt like a big-fancy-author-bow to tie things off, but I'm OK with it.

Reading all three books from The Pledge series in one week had been an awesome experience!
At first, I was a bit hesitant to start reading this series. You see, I was never a dystopian fan. And when I knew there were scenes with gallows and rifles, I wondered if the books were just a rehash of some of the plots that I've read in other series. What differed here was that I was very much surprised by all the emotions that the characters were able to bring out of me - I could still recall from book one when the villain was first introduced - I knew, with immediate and absolute certainty, that I'd hate her. I. WANTED. HER. DEAD. And that in itself was powerful, as I was usually not in the mood to feel bothered enough to hate any fictional character in my life.
In The Offering , Charlie was forced to leave all her loved ones behind to face her ultimate challenge. If she won, she'd feel free and well; but if she lost, she'd not only lose her life but also put her queendom in great peril. Was the risk worthwhile?
It was nail-biting to watch Charlie fight for her life! I was tempted (several times) to skip ahead and read the epilogue just to see if she might have survived after all the things that she had to go through and I was glad that I managed to rein in and focus on the book one chapter at a time. I guess from reading the book summary you all know Charlie was threatened. Despite knowing she was walking into a trap, Charlie understood very well that she had no other option but to confront her worst and darkest moment. Her determination was inspirational and I really liked the transformation that she went through in this series. Even though she wasn't physically strong, she managed to do so many good things that uplifted and amazed everyone. And when she fell limp facing her archenemy, I sniffled (and then tumbled and almost planted myself face down on the floor as my box of Kleenex was a few inches away from my reach).
One thing that I particularly loved about this series was how the beliefs honored by each of the characters shaped the action that happened. If the Queen of Astonia valued similar beliefs as Charlie did, she wouldn't hold people hostage and attempt the unthinkable. If Charlie didn't value human lives, she wouldn't make her own sacrifice and try her best to avoid wars. I liked that there was a sense of realism in the characters - I felt as though I were living and breathing alongside with the characters - and perhaps that's the reason why this series was able to bring out so much emotions from me.
Needless to say I was so thrilled that I carved out time in my schedule to read the entire series this week! If you've read this series, may I ask if you might have enjoyed it? And if you haven't read the books yet, I wonder if you'd be adding this series to your read list. Would you let me know?

I was tempted (several times) to skip ahead and read the epilogue just to see if she might have survived after all the things that she had to go through and I was glad that I managed to rein in and focus on the book one chapter at a time. I guess from reading the book summary you all know Charlie was threatened. Despite knowing she was walking into a trap, Charlie understood very well that she had no other option but to confront her worst and darkest moment. Her determination was inspirational and I really liked the transformation that she went through in this series. Even though she wasn't physically strong, she managed to do so many good things that uplifted and amazed everyone. And when she fell limp facing her archenemy, I sniffled (and then tumbled and almost planted myself face down on the floor as my box of Kleenex was a few inches away from my reach).
One thing that I particularly loved about this series was how the beliefs honored by each of the characters shaped the action that happened. If the Queen of Astonia valued similar beliefs as Charlie did, she wouldn't hold people hostage and attempt the unthinkable. If Charlie didn't value human lives, she wouldn't make her own sacrifice and try her best to avoid wars. I liked that there was a sense of realism in the characters - I felt as though I were living and breathing alongside with the characters - and perhaps that's the reason why this series was able to bring out so much emotions from me.
Needless to say I was so thrilled that I carved out time in my schedule to read the entire series this week! If you've read this series, may I ask if you might have enjoyed it? And if you haven't read the books yet, I wonder if you'd be adding this series to your read list. Would you let me know?

Wow. The conclusion to this trilogy didn't disappoint.
Charlie is trying to avoid war. A war that could destroy her and her growing country. She is also at war with herself and tearing herself apart by trying to suppress Sabara. She is throwing herself into her country. What she doesn't know is that there is a traitor in her hope. So begins the journey to stop the war and get rid of Sabara once and for all.
I really did enjoy this book. It was truly the ending this trilogy deserved. Yes, the death was sad, but it is war. If everyone got out safe, the book wouldn't seem realistic. The ending reminded me a little bit of 'The Bitter Kingdom' by Rae Carson.
Through out this trilogy, we have seen Charlie grow into the Queen that her country needs her to be. We've watched the way that Brooklynn and Aron as well as Max and Angelica have changed as well. This journey, this experience touched all of them in different ways. Charlie didn't want to be Queen, yet she stepped up because it was the right thing to do. She had her difficulties with all of her friends, her sister and Max, but in the end, they all stand together, fighting for a country that deserves a second chance.
Definitely going to miss this trilogy! There is truly nothing like it. If you haven't read it, pick it up. You won't regret it.

Bueno, esto ha sido toda una travesía.
Cuando leí el primer libro, no sabía muy bien que esperar del resto de la serie. Cuando leí el segundo, ni siquiera estaba seguro de querer terminarla. Cuando leí este, super que todo valió la pena porque es un serie perfecto para la historia.
Desde el comienzo de este libro, hay acción en todo momento. Pasan cosas en cada página lo que lo hace imposible de dejar. Los personajes se ven en medio de una guerra naciente y es muy interesante ver por todo lo que pasan.
Me gustó mucho el cierre que se le dio a la trilogía, porque me pareció muy razonable y probable para las situaciones que estaban sucediendo. La autora supo cerrar todos los lazos abiertos que tenia y dejo una gran historia detrás.
Como escuche el audiolibro de este y lo deje por un mes entero ya que estuve fuera del país, no le pude dar las cuatros estrellas completas porque siento que se perdió mucho de la historia todo el tiempo que no la escuche, pero eso fue solamente mi culpa.

Well that was the worst finale to a trilogy I've ever read. Once again more of a journey novel. So much so I literally ended up having to skip it just to get to the "final battle" portion. Which wasn't much of a final battle. Literally with a knife and a bullet and BAM the bad guys are dead and HAPPY ENDING!

I loved this book. I think that Charlie is one of the best Queens the nation ever had. I love how she is determined to keep her people safe no matter the cost. I feel bad for her since she had to face some pretty gruesome sights. I am glad that in the end as usual she won.

September 1, 2016Wow. Well the book started out with quite a bang. Wow, I had to put the book down for a minute after reading the prologue. I quickly went back because then I had to know more but still.
This is book 3 in the series so I will avoid spoilers for this book but there will be some if you haven’t read book 1 and 2. Beware.
It’s amazing to me how much Charlie has grown from The Pledge to now The Offering. In The Essence we saw her being a lot more timid and reserved as she was trying to navigate through being a new Queen and dealing with Sabara/Layla’s essence inside of her. I felt like in this book she really comes into her own. Where she was barely riding a horse and falling face first into the mud during Zafir’s combat lessons, she now is...well she still has trouble with horses but she is more able to defend herself. She still can make rash impulsive decisions but she learns from them and by the ending of the book it’s like she blooms. I loved how her character developed.
I did miss some characters like Zafir who had a smaller role in this book but we get to know other characters better like Eden. I can’t say I became her super fan or anything but it nice to get to see some other sides of her. I also love Brooklyn and getting in her head is always fun. She is such a tough cookie. Max takes on his usual subtle role which just shows Charlie doesn’t need a guy to protect her. I really liked that we got to see more of Sage. It totally changed my view of her. There are many characters in this series but I never felt like they were fighting for your attention or underdeveloped. I felt like I got to know each character enough and of course I wouldn’t mind some novellas on a few, like Sage. Even though Charlie is obviously the main focus I felt like the story was shared among the characters and made it feel well rounded.
I love the world that has been built with the kingdoms. We once again venture out from the palace and get to experience more parts of Ludania. We saw a lot of the Scablands in book 2 and now we are seeing a lot of the coastal region. I thought it was cool how that Charlie gets to venture out into these areas rather than having them just refered to as she holes up in her palace. I want to know more though!! I want to visit the other kingdoms!! More spinoffs, more novellas, more writing….well I guess I shouldn’t walking around making demands. Ha ha.
There were plenty of intense moments. Like I said the prologue had me dropping the book on the ground but there were other parts where I felt like I couldn’t slow down my eyes. I was going to give myself whiplash flying through the pages like I was. Especially the last 100 there is no way I could have taken a break from that.
So yes this was an excellent 3rd installment of the series and I was very happy with it. My inner fantasy girl really enjoyed these books. Magic, Queendoms, Murder and cutie pie guys, you can’t go wrong with that.

The Offering is the third and final book in the Pledge trilogy, and is also one that has been sitting on my shelf since publication. I began reading with some trepidation, would I remember what had happened previously? Would the ending of the book be something I wanted?
The Offering picks up after the events of the previous book, and it did take me a few pages to remember who was who, but I quickly fell back into this world, excited to see what would happen next for Charlie. The Offering was a good finale to this series, and I am glad to see it come to an end the way it did (with only a slight niggle that I will elaborate on). But the journey to get there was hard for all parties involved.
Seeing Charlie away from the palace, away from her followers, her guards, and getting to see her as an unremarkable traveler was interesting. We see her for who she was and how others see her without knowing she is the Queen. She helps others when needed, even at the risk of reducing thier own rations. But she is a fighter, and whether her rash decision to do what she does was right at the time, it was something that needed to be done at some point, and at least she held the reins for a short while.
The Offering was full of drama, excitement, and violence, with the war being fought on many fronts it was hard to see who would actually be victorious once it was over. There are lives lost, which I did cry about, and others have had their lives changed irrecoverably, but the final outcome was something that needed to be done.

Overall The Offering was a great read, my only niggle was the last page, the way it ended I wanted to see a little bit more for this character and thier future. What can I say? I absolutely LOVED this book. It’s the absolute perfect conclusion to The Pledge trilogy! The book starts off with a gasp-inducing occurrence that completely shocked me. I so did not see that coming — and I could not believe it! And I so didn’t expect such a shocking beginning to the conclusion of one of my current favorite series! From there, the book is full of surprises. Surprise alliances, surprise partnerships, surprise relationships, and more. Yes, there were a few things I could see coming, but none that spoiled the story.
Charlie is stronger in this book than I had previously given her credit for. Don’t get me wrong. I always knew she was stronger than she suspected. She faces so much in this book, though, that it’s clear she’s made of steel. Or something. And she’s clever. Very clever. Not that I had doubted that, of course. And I love that she and Max (book boyfriend, for sure) are clearly perfect for each other, but they aren’t overly stuck on each other, either. They are secure in their love for each other, and each other’s love for them.
The Offering by Kimberly Derting is the absolute perfect conclusion to her The Pledge series. There are moments that will make you gasp, moments that will make you cry, and even some moments that will make you smile and/or laugh. I was sold on this series from the very beginning of the very first book, The Pledge, and I cannot gush enough about just how awesomely it ends. The final book in the Pledge series. I finished the second book back in August of 2013. So it took me a little while to get back into the world. I went back and read descriptions of the first two (The Pledge and The Essence). Then I started to remember what a magical world the author created.
In this book, Charlie (aka Queen Charlaina of Ludania) has to once again battle Sabara (whose essence still dwells inside Charlie). But that isn't the worst of it. She faces tragic loss and the threat of war. She tries to find a way to save everyone and not lose herself at the same time.
In this world, queens have the power (as opposed to kings). Queens all have some magical ability. And Sabara has been around for ages. Whenever, her body grows old, she places her essence in a younger queen. Usually, the younger queen's essence disappears; she ceases to exist while Sabara takes complete control of her body. In the case of Charlie, somehow when Sabara's essence entered her, it didn't completely take over and Charlie didn't cease to exist. Thus, Charlie is constantly struggling to maintain control while Sabara tries to take it away from her. Charlie is a good Queen, but will Sabara be her undoing?
Charlie has a strong group of friends and supporters along with her younger sister Angelina. Brooklyn has been her best friend since childhood. Max is the love of Charlie's life. Xander & Eden started as revolutionaries and became so much more. The characters are all well-developed and each have strong personalities.

Anyone who likes fantasy, strong female characters and dystopia.

This was definitely an exciting ending to The Pledge Trilogy. With amazing character development, unexpected twists, and thrilling action this is exactly how good story should end. Go out with a bang.
The Offering starts off with Queen Elena and Niko planning against Ludania to get something that both of them wants – Sabara. While Niko is still trying to be together with her, Queen Elena wants to live forever and have the powers that she heard of. Sending Xavier’s hand to Charlie is the first step to it. When Charlie receives the package, she decides to do what is best for her – to get rid of Sabara once and for all and finally take control of her body. But leaving the country to meet Queen Elena might have started the war after all and betrayal of Niko screws things up.
All the previous characters that I felt in love with in previous books were all there. In The Offering we have a chance to read POVs of Max, Brooklyn, and Sage to spice things up. I would have loved to read more of Sage’s POV – she was definitely a surprising and influencing character in the story.
There were some moments where I wanted to strange Charlie throughout the series just because of how annoying she sounded with Sabara being in her but I was relieved when she actually started to act like a real Queen. Also, her and Angelina’s broken relationship really made me upset but everything that worked out was good. This was good ending to 2013 series.

3.5 because I did the enjoy the ending and those few swoon-worthy scenes with MAAAAAX.
So I originally really enjoyed the first book in this series and I LOVE Derting's writing. But the second book was a pretty big letdown and this book had it's good and bad moments. As the last book in the series I expected WAY more to happen and I got to about 60% and felt that NOTHING was happening (minus some making out with MAAAAAAX, some political stuff and a really boring trek through the forest). Thankfully around 70% the action kicked in but man, all of that could have been SO much sooner if the stupid journey through the forest had been cut out... that was just so pointless! She ended up in the same place regardless! Ugh, so I hate it when it feels like the book is just wasting time until it gets to the good stuff.
There were a few gut-punches and I teared up over a death. I also enjoyed some of the new characters, but feel like there could have been SO much more done with them (Sage was so cool! I would have LOVED more Sage trekking through the forest than the other boring forest journey).

The Offering was slow in the beginning of the book and I was completely confused, but I was already invested in the characters: Charlaina (Charlie), Brooklyn (Brook), the evil queen, Sabara and all the others that I wanted to know their outcomes in the series so I pushed through my confusion and kept reading. Then in the middle of the book everything became clear, the story began to develop and the action ensued! I was hooked for the rest of the story and the ending was tied up nicely. I think the highlight of The Offering was how all the supporting characters became more fleshed out and their stories were more fascinating than in the previous books.
Favorite Character(s): A tie between Casper & Sage. Both were supporting characters and their courage to fight for what they believed to be the right thing in not so perfect situations made them compelling and irresistibly magnetic in the story. They drew me into their stories and I wanted them to both get what they rightfully deserved.

The third and final book in the Pledge trilogy. To end off this series Charlie has decided to take it upon herself to fight the good fight once and for all. She takes two of her soldiers with her, her best friend Brooke, and Eden. The three of them run into some trouble, but it’s all about what happens in the end that matters. A good Queen, or so the reader was told to think- Queen Elena is actually pretty evil; Charlie must fight her and Sabara’s Essence inside of her to win the war. It’s all up to her. The novel’s plotline was very intense at times and the author would jump between points of view to keep the reader guessing what was going to happen. But overall, it was a good ending, everything was filled in and the reader was left satisfied with how the war went down. If you like power-hungry, action novels this trilogy is full if it.

I award this book 4.5 stars.
I really enjoyed the first two books in this trilogy and this last installment doesn't disappoint. Ludaina is on the brink of war and Charlie has to go on a harrowing journey to try to stop it from happening. Once again Charlie doesn't trust Max, which rubs me the wrong way. But he forgives her, so I try to do the same. That said, the rest of the book is so flipping good that I quickly forget about that fact. The pacing is great, the characters are solid, and the conclusion is satisfying. This is one rare trilogy that will stay on my shelf. It's a must read, go get it now!
