An old enemy wreaks new havoc at the end of the world…
After the mists’ lethal apocalypse, mankind’s only hope for survival lies broken and battered, the prisoner of a ruthless sociopath who will stop at nothing to hurt him. Emma sets out to rescue him. She faces an ultimatum and must relinquish everything she holds dear. As Arthur teeters on the brink of life and death, Emma’s healing ability fails. Her own despair tests her, and she must grow stronger than she ever dreamt possible as she confronts the truth of her own heart.
In a time of apocalyptic despair, love is put to the test…
Traci L. Slatton, author of FALLEN and COLD LIGHT, is a graduate of Yale (84) and Columbia (88). She lives in Manhattan, and her love for Renaissance Italy inspired her historical novel IMMORTAL and her contemporary vampire art history mystery THE BOTTICELLI AFFAIR. FALLEN is the first in a romantic trilogy set during the end times; COLD LIGHT and FAR SHORE further the dystopian tale. DANCING IN THE TABERNACLE is her first book of poetry. She also wrote a sculpture book, THE ART OF LIFE, with her husband. THE LOVE OF MY (OTHER) LIFE is a bittersweet rom-com that addresses the question: What worlds would you move to be with your soulmate? Her latest book is a manual for do-it-yourselfers entitled HOW TO WRITE, PUBLISH, AND MARKET YOUR BOOK YOURSELF, A Manual for the courageous and persistent.
The world has collapsed and the nightmare is never ending for Emma as she makes an impossible decision, and must live with its consequences. Arthur is found, but what is left is hardly identifiable as human, whether he will live or not is in question, but Emma’s sense of responsibility, loyalty and love leave her no choice but to try to save what is left of him. Is it the right choice? Has she given up too much? Does she place too much stock in her own invincibility, her own self-importance? Does she have the right to gamble with the lives of others, to use who she needs to in order to survive? Are her powers evolving again or are they fading away? What of Arthur? Her family she left behind? Far Shore by Traci L. Slatton, the third book of the After Trilogy raises just as many uncomfortable questions as in previous books as we come to the end of this series, but the beginning of a new world for those who survive the unrelenting mist. Ms. Slatton is making a bold statement by not painting her heroes or heroines as anything more than what they are, flawed, traumatized and yet brave enough to take a stand and live with the consequences. Emma is practical, very strong and willing to take more than her share of risks. Arthur is not the strong, mysterious character we knew and the change is shocking. Alexei, with his own demons avenged and soothed, impossibly has done an about face, as he witnesses Arthur’s condition, but can he be trusted? Do NOT expect to be comfortable with all of the decisions made or the actions taken, this world is still bleak, filled with deceit and treachery, but there is still hope, there is still love. In the end, it may have been one uncomfortable decision that ultimately may save the world and someone had to be strong enough to make it. The author generously provided me with this Arc edition in exchange for my honest review. If you’re looking for something to scrape a little on the smooth edges of your comfort zone, this series will do it, but be prepared to be haunted by “what ifs.”

I have recently discovered Traci L. Slatton's writing and I am completely enthralled with her series, The After Trilogy. Read my reviews of book one, Fallen, and book two, Cold Light. I never dreamed I'd love this series as much as I do. I was on pins and needles waiting for Far Shore, and I stopped everything (including the book I was reading at the time) to read this book.
Slatton did not disappoint my high expectations: I loved every single second of Far Shore. I did not want the book to end, and found myself trying to slow my reading pace, just to make the book last longer. Slatton's writing style makes this series so special. The best way I can describe the writing is that it's very intelligent without feeling too text-like. I found myself using my Kindle dictionary function several times, and I love being challenged like that.
The premise of the earth-destroying mists is so unique and well-executed. The people of the world live in constant fear of the mists, which consume people, animals, and structures alike. They leave a trail of devastation wherever they go. I really liked the fact that the mists lend a really intriguing sci-fi element to this series. Besides the lethal mists, there are groups of raiders who are terrifyingly inhumane. So, basically, there are dangers right and left in this series.
The series is set in the end times, hence the name The After Trilogy. I like books set in this time period because the trappings of every day life are rendered superfluous and day-to-day survival becomes key. I like that focus on living, especially because it allows the reader to see who the characters are at their core, with the usual concerns of daily life removed from the story. Slatton does an excellent job with her characterization and also with the relationships between characters. I've said it before: I can't believe that I'm just as invested in the love story as I am in the fate of the world, but I am. I am still shocked by Emma's choice, but I believe it was really the only choice she could make and stay true to her beliefs.
The After trilogy is a perfect example of why it's good for me to read different genres. This series is adult fiction and it's not to be missed. Sometimes I get so caught up in my young adult, and lately, new adult, series that I don't want to branch out into adult fiction, but I'm so glad I did. I finished this book feeling educated, entertained, and satisfied. I still think about this series, weeks later, and often wonder what the characters are doing now. This series is outstanding and I can't wait to read more from Traci Slatton!
So this one started out a little better than the last one ended. Emma is with her husband a daughters. But she dreams of Arthur. And Alexei brings her nightmares. She hasn't been intimate with her husband, and he's about had it with her erotic dreams of Arthur. But it really comes to a head when Emma is summoned to help Jeannie, who is pregnant but really sick, and Arthur, who ended up becoming Alexei's prisoner. Haywood gives her an ultimatum: help her friends and never come back -- never see him or her girls again -- or stay. It's really an impossible ultimatum... Jeannie will likely die without Emma's help, and she feels compelled to try to get Arthur away from Alexei, so she makes the difficult decision to leave her girls behind. Her going to Arthur is why I say this started out better than the last one ended. I get that Haywood's a good guy, but they've never had what Emma and Arthur experienced together, so I just didn't understand why she'd go back with Haywood.
Lots of things happen in this one. Lots more fantastical things. The mists are evolving. But the underlying friendships and her love for Arthur are familiar. The whole thing with Alexei at the house with Emma and Arthur was kinda weird. So anyway, it was a good story, though it ended abruptly to me. So on to #4, which should complete the story.
Considering how much I enjoyed the previous two books, this one came up a little short for me. It lacked what I loved most about the preceding books--the interaction of Arthur and Emma in a partnership. This one was mostly depressing until the end and for a trilogy, it wasn't resolved.
I hope the next book restores my high because Arthur and Emma is a combination that can't be beat.

A mystical odyssey, a haunting love..
My Thoughts
Throughout this series one steadfast theme has been front and center that there is still hope for the future, this hope is severely tested many times for both the characters and the reader in every book but especially so in this third installment in the trilogy!
Questions have been answered that were previously raised but there are so many answers still uncovered even as we are in the final stretch to see whether Emma chooses her husband and daughters or if her all consuming passion for Arthur will prevail. The enemy of old is stronger than ever, his hatred leads him to brutalize and maim Arthur to the point he is unrecognizable.
Emma finds herself at an impasse, she is strongly tempted to let her ties go with the band of travelers she has become so close to. However much it pains her to do so she realizes that she has no other choice but to leave her family and do her best to not only save the life of her pregnant friend but she must also do everything in her power to rescue Arthur for the sake of mankind’s future as he is the only weapon they have that can counteract and control the deadly mists.
The strenuous physical journey that Emma undertakes is nothing in comparison to the difficult mental hardships that she must also face once her goal of finding and securing Arthur is met. The man she had fallen in love with was a mere shell, mutilated, scarred and maimed almost beyond saving. The reality of what her choice may cost her if Arthur dies nearly puts Emma into shock at times, by a miracle of fate she finally finds a way to heal the wounds and Arthur is once again physically whole. His mental state however remains that of a simple and overlarge child, Emma’s despair of ever having Arthur whole mentally as well as physically leads her to make a decision she regrets and one that ultimately almost costs her to lose him forever.
As things come to their conclusion we find Arthur and Emma together with all they have shared bonding them tighter than ever! By the time the book finished I was at first heartbroken, then angry, then shocked and by the end still feel that there is so much more to be resolved but am still happy for the choice Emma made and that it worked out for her the way it did as had many a moment when not sure it would.
The dystopian genre has been quite popular in the last couple of years, especially when it come to Young Adult books, but truthfully I haven’t read many that are outside the YA subgroup. The After Trilogy (or series?) has frankly been a great discovery and I’m a big fan of the concept and the story. As an adult dystopian book, I think it’s a nice change from the YA genre books that I’m used to reading, since it does allow for darker and more mature themes. If you thought dystopian books only worked for YA, Traci L. Slatton will prove you wrong.
The post-apocalyptic mists destroy everything in their path, and for those who were lucky to avoid being engulfed by these mists, it either transformed them into ruthless survivors, crazy psychopaths, mindless imbeciles or changed ordinary people into heroes. The main character, Emma, is one of these heroes because the appearance of the mists has given her the ability to heal with the simple touch of her hands. Her story is a complicated one, and her dedication to her family and to those she loves brings out the best in her. She is a true survivor, doing anything and everything she needs to do in order to survive and keep her family and friends out of danger, even risk being held prisoner in order to free her lover, Arthur, from torture at the hands of their nemesis. I really admire what she goes through to save Arthur, and while I don’t necessarily agree with her actions, I can understand where she’s coming from. Leaving her husband and daughters behind, she embarks on a mad mission to free her lover. I find it a bit shameless to leave a husband behind in order to save another lover, and while she did believe her husband dead in the beginning of this new relationship, she does cause him a lot of pain by bouncing between the both of them.
Arthur is a strong and intelligent man, and I can definitely see why any woman in her right mind might be attracted to him. What began as a business transaction between Arthur and Emma turned into romance and love. Their relationship is a complicated one for sure and even if I’m completely against infidelity, I think they make a great pair and I really hope everything ends up in their favor in the end.
Actually, many survivors find love over the course of the series and I think those stories are important in order to balance out the death and the destruction of this post-apocalyptic world. I love how detailed the secondary characters are and how their romantic relationships are present too. Truthfully, I think the author’s character development is phenomenal because she really makes you care about each and everyone of her characters. The camaraderie between the characters also balances out the darker themes of the book, and truthfully, just makes is more interesting to read. The series is really about the human condition so it’s also nice to see how different characters deal with the new struggles of this post-apocalyptic world.
This series definitely keeps getting better and better! Mysteries about the Arthur and the origin of the mists continue to be revealed and the mists begin to evolve into something stronger and more organized. I was introduced to this series as a trilogy but I really hope it doesn’t end with book 3. Emma and Arthur’s story is definitively not over and I can’t wait to see how things will unfold. I would absolutely recommend this series to any fan of dystopian books, especially those who want to branch out from YA dystopian series that seem to be dominating the genre lately.
This statement is proving to be too true for Emma. She made her decision to stand by her husband, Haywood, despite her love for Arthur. She got Beth and Haywood out of Alexei’s camp and was resolute in her decision to remain with her family. Only a month later, Haywood is tired of hearing Emma dream of Arthur and their marriage is just a shell of a relationship. When her friends arrive at her home to ask her to help pregnant Jeannie and rescue Arthur from Alexei’s camp, not even Haywood’s ultimatum can keep her from going to help. This journey will bring unexpected twists and the ever-evolving mists will require new plans, but hopefully Emma’s choice to leave Haywood will bring her the fulfillment she craves.
The mists are evolving and becoming more dangerous than ever, but so are the psychic powers so many survivors possess in the After. Reading this series has been exciting and awakening. I have never asked myself so many of life’s big questions due to a book, but the AFTER TRILOGY was clearly written with that experience in mind. In FAR SHORE, we learn much more to the workings of the mists, but more questions arise as well. Arthur is not the only piece of the puzzle and as usual, the secondary characters are so important to the complexity of this story.
I couldn’t believe Haywood finally gave the ultimatum. I mean, I could believe it because it probably should’ve been done before, but that was hard to hear. There are so many awesome twists and turns in this series and FAR SHORE does not disappoint. I loved the issues surrounding Emma and Arthur’s relationship. I know that sound ridiculous, but Emma is a strong woman who can deal with a lot on her own and Arthur needs to learn that she is a partner. The loneliness Emma encounters is almost too much to even read. And maybe I’m crazy, but I have a soft spot for Alexei. The charisma of his that is spoken of so much during this trilogy becomes much clearer to Emma and I couldn’t help but like him despite all the wrong he has done.
Here’s the best news yet. IT’S NOT OVER! At the end of the FAR SHORE, I freaked out a little because I thought, “Oh no! That can’t be it, but it’s a trilogy so it must be!” I was more than a little upset so I went a little stalkerish on Ms. Slatton and searched her website and blog and finally just emailed her asking if there would be another book. Her answer was there would be a book four and maybe five! YAY!! I really want to hear about the group’s next journey and the plan to eradicate the mists forever.
THE AFTER SERIES has been an amazing rollercoaster ride for me and FAR SHORE was an excellent installment. Even if this is all I hear of Emma, Arthur and the rest of this world again, I will have been so glad I read this series; but I am ecstatic that there will be a fourth book. Traci L. Slatton has created a world that excites and makes you think deeply at every turn.

"Far Shore" the third book in the intoxicating "After series" begins after Emma and Haywood return home having saved their daughter Beth from the clutches of Alexei and his raiders. As the tension mounts between Emma and her husband she's asked to return to the Outpost City to save Jeannie and her baby as well as to help plan the rescue of Arthur from the raider camp. Angry, Haywood gives her an ultimatum. But, devoted to Arthur and loyal to her friends the choice is simple and she packs to leave.
Emma realizes that Arthur battered and broken under torture may not survive if she doesn't accept the bargain Alexei, a powerful psychic proposes in her recurring nightmares. Not only does she love Arthur but she believes he can destroy the mists that are evolving and becoming more aggressive. With Nowokocha, Theo and Donny, she sets a plan in motion to save him and to escape from Alexei. But when captured she discovers only the dying husk of her lover. Determined to heal him, Emma's power and resolve will be tested especially when she learns that it may take more than Arthur's skill to save the world.
Traci Slatton has created an innovative and imaginative apocalyptic world where humanity stands at a crossroads, where extinction is possible as the mists evolve , becoming more virulent and destructive. Although the mood of the story continues to be dark and chilling, there are moments of humor in the banter between Alexei and Emma as he coerces her into healing him, and Arthur's lack of bowel restraint on the lawn of the house where they're staying. But like all the "After" novels the action never stops as the intensity and suspense builds in Emma's encounters with the raiders, the mist, bears and wraiths.
Her bond with Arthur continues to defy "logic and obligation" as Emma struggles to overcome the sudden disappearance of her gift , only to have it suddenly flare into something greater. In her loneliness and despair she makes an error in judgement that comes back to haunt her, almost costing her Arthur's love. Yet through all their adversities and challenges their love grows stronger, even strengthening Arthur's hold on the mists.
Part of what makes this plot so gripping is the characters who bring power, and depth to the drama as events unfold; like Emma's unreasonable, emotional outbursts as well as her strength-of-will and impulsiveness that underlie her "talent for mishap". As Arthur recovers his health his overbearing, arrogant nature resurfaces as well as his guilt, despair and rage in his inability to control the mists he created to end all wars. Among the unforgettable sub- characters are; Donny the self-disciplined, former police detective who can influence minds; the kind, caring Theo who's like a brother to Emma; the clever, and resourceful pickpocket Gaff; and the unpredictable and formidable Alexei who loves the unattainable.
As the nightmare on earth continues, Emma and Arthur's love is tested in "Far Shore" the captivating third book in a memorable series. I liked it and rate this well-developed story highly.
FAR SHORE is the third instalment in Traci L. Slatton’s After series set in the post apocalyptic dystopian future following the Day when the lethal mists began to ravage the world’s population and lands. In the After, many of the survivors have developed psychic powers and special abilities that will all play an important role in the survival of the world.
At the end of Cold Light (book #2) our ‘hero’ Arthur had been taken prisoner by a mad man who knows what it is like to lose everything to the mists. Alexi blames Arthur for the mists and ultimately the death of millions of people on earth including the only woman that he has ever loved. There is only one sure way to make Arthur suffer and that is to take the one thing that Arthur loves-his Emma.
Emma is a woman who is torn between the man that she loves and the family that she has risked everything to save. And Emma is the only person who is able to save Arthur and bring him back from the brink of death. But Arthur is no longer the man with whom Emma fell in love and it will take a supernatural miracle to find the man buried deep in the mind of tortured soul.
Traci L. Slatton brings together most of the previous storyline characters-each of whom has suffered in one way or another. From Emma’s family in Canada to the family she left behind in France, a terrible price has been paid by all of those who have survived the attacks from the raiders, the rogues and the mists.
We are pulled into a story of survival against all odds. The death of so many weighs heavily on the few that have survived; but there are also bright spots amongst the gloom when a new life is brought into the world. Our survivors have had a difficult journey and one that has had its’ share of losses and pain. There is heartache for a woman who has lost the man that she loves, but also for the man who has lost himself in a fight for his sanity and his life. Relationships continue to form while others begin to crumble under the weight of betrayal and loss.
Far Shore (and The After series) is a story that makes you wonder about the what ifs and whys of a world at war. If the ultimate weapon of mass destruction is let loose onto a world of innocent people, what will happen when said weapon evolves and comes looking for the creator? Do we really trust the people in charge of our daily lives and if not, what will happen when the people at the top, can no longer control the monster within?
Traci L Slatton has written another wonderful and amazing storyline that looks at the aftermath of an experiment gone horribly wrong. It is a story about love and loss; betrayal and pain; and second chances to make everything right. And it is also about two people, who have found love amongst the chaos and destruction, only to lose each other at the hands of a man tortured by his own loss. Sometimes there is only one choice and that choice is to survive, no matter what someone else has in mind.
I loved the first two volumes and I was impatient to discover the third. I thought it would be the last one, but is it really? That we finally would have the last word of the story but I was surprised to see that this was not the case. But I wonder if the author is preparing a fourth book or if finally the book ends on such an open end. But back to the beginning.
We find Emma once again, she is actually living with her children and her husband after saving him. Yet she still dreams of Arthur and it’s more and more difficult for her companion to bear it. He loves her but they also both know that the limit is almost here. So when her friends come back to ask her for help to save a pregnant friend, Emma doesn’t need more to leave … If only she didn’t have the unbearable ultimatum from her husband who told her that if she leaves, it won’t be necessary to come back, either for him or her daughters. It’s really terrible for her, but she can not abandon her friends and she therefore shares a heavy pound in her heart for this new adventure. But this is not all and soon Emma also learns that by leaving the Alexei’s camp, Arthur stayed behind, being tortured during all this time. It’s really sad to see all the things our heroine has to go through. She just wanted a normal life with her family, but nothing is ever simple. Love, revenge, and her thoughts are always on her way, whatever she does.
We have many events in this novel. We discover Emma full of doubts, trying to keep hope in all circumstances and yet it remains very difficult. By saving Arthur, she didn’t expect a broken and destroyed man. I’ve always had some fairly complex feelings towards Alexei throughout the novels. We come to appreciate him, then hate him and our feelings are constantly changing towards him… It’s the same in this book and I admit that I really struggled to decide about his fate. Despite his hatred for Arthur, we know that he really appreciates Emma, in his own way even if a little twisted. But each character will evolve, and understand many great revelations, which will also change their future.
I found that this novel was really eventful. We come to discover the weaknesses of this mom we continue to discover in these novels and it is true that we can only understand her loneliness, sadness and desires. Everything is always so hard for her… It was in any case once again a very good story that I enjoyed to discover. Everything is easy to read and it’s always fascinating to learn a little more about this new world. By cons as I said the end leaves me a bit puzzled if it ends up like that and if there are no other novels thereafter.
‘The heart wants what the heart wants' seems like such a redundancy. Yet there is that simple truth to the adage where there often seems to be no real choice in the matter. We can ignore it and yet there will always be that ‘what if?’
In Far Shore by Traci L. Slatton, book three of the after series takes us further into the devastation of earth and the causes, yet it also creates a sort of yearning. With the damage the abilities the follow seem strange, yet without them the suffering is even more extreme. Emma is home again and with her family, and yet her heart is not whole. Her friends are far away and she has no idea what is happening to Arthur.
When a sudden appearance of a small group of friends appear, only then does she learn of the danger Jeannie faces with her upcoming birth, and worse, Arthur is a prisoner of their worst enemy. Having unknowingly caused the death of Alexei’s wife, he has been tortured to near death. She must ride out to use her skills in Jeannie’s upcoming birth, and then she must go to Arthur’s rescue. Her husband Haywood does not see it that way and offers an ultimatum. Still, she has not choice, she must choose the path that can save the world and the man she loves beyond all reasoning.
Are her healing powers strong enough to bring back from the brink of death? Can she arrive in time to save Jeannie’s unborn child. The outcomes of each act have far reaching consequences. The results can go either way, reducing the earth to rubble, or driving the mists away for good.
Slatton continues to give us a heart rending love, one that can tear apart a family. Yet she somehow imbues the situation with all the right reasons, so where the outcome could be tragic, there is somehow a bit of magic. The empathy and pain leap off the pages as you suffer with the characters. As some of Emma’s past comes to her in dreams, you miss the characters that have moved on. They are like friends and family and the loss creates a somber atmosphere. The horror of the acts perpetrated against Arthur creates anger, making you want to hate Alexei. There is much at stake with all the characters that comes into play with the telling.
The heat and passion that sizzles between Arthur and Emma does not abate even when they are at their wits end.
If you enjoy mystery, science fiction, heated romance, adventure and dystopia stories this is a shining example. Book Three of the After Series, you can read stand alone, but even better with the rest of the series. The amazing backdrop and dangerous situations will keep you enthralled and asking for more of these exciting characters.
“Non-existent scrims of vibration” are the key to the mists now threatening the extinction of mankind anew in this final book of “The After Series” trilogy. Before they can be eliminated, however, there are human obstacles to overcome. Ironically, the mists will be part of the solutions to each indomitable force obstructing success. Each person in this story is developing new powers from the mists’ presence and has to learn to use them for the best of the community. Initially, however, Emma, our heroine, makes a very difficult decision, a choice that will affect her entire future and that of the family she has come to love. For now Emma has a singular mission, to heal two friends, one of whom is completely broken by another human. At the same time, the mists are acting strangely, actually surrounding crowds of travelers in the shape of a lasso and many who are touched by the mists are losing their minds. Emma’s healing powers will evolve in a totally new way, for better or worse yet to tell. When Emma and Arthur again meet, he shows ambivalent feelings toward Emma for a totally logical reason as well as the suffering he has endured which has left him a very angry man. They share some very feisty dialogue indeed. Alexei, their enemy, as well undergoes a transformation that the reader must decide is credible or not as the plot thickens and Emma’s reactions to him as well are startling. Emma is quite an anti-clique person, something the reader should note as the plot progresses. Once she has been part of a rescue or healing event, she remains totally devoted to those who have entered her world. The unique quality of this final novel is how love plays out in very, very unexpected ways that are notably profound not only for the characters but for those who are forming new Safe Zone communities. Their ability to unite these qualities is the key to the ultimate quest which is, after all is said and done, to conquer the mists! Far Shore… is a well-crafted finale to a notable sci-fi story. Traci Slatton doesn’t reduce the story to a simple good guy-bad guy scenario and leaves the reader again with questions about evolving relationships, powers of the mind and spirit, and what it takes to live with each person’s virtues and vices and all the foibles in between. Science and humans are dynamic, emerging phenomena with whom the reader will engage in intelligent, engaging steps throughout this highly recommended novel!
How do you love something, so much and then accept it is just gone. This series has had me on a hook for days. I raced through all three books without a second to lose. Books one and two had me riveted, and captivated by this post apocalyptic love story. It is a mystery and adventure that I never wanted to stop. Far Shore is the most recent, and last book for the trilogy. I had such high expectations for this book, and it just did not seem to meet them. There is a very big difference from shocking readers, and just plain changing the course unrealistically. This story was that for me. I could not accept, nor would I want to accept the direction that this story took me. I feel like I was built up so high in the beginning of this series, and the bottom seems to have fallen right out from underneath me. Emma and Robert jump some major hurdles in this book. I was anxious to find how she would miraculously save him, but I was disappointed to see the unfolding. These special powers that have developed in the After we accepted, and a touch of super natural, but I think this story lost me right about the time Emma shot electricity from her hands. More importantly, I was even further pushed away with the development between her and Alessi. There is no way that a normal average person would have her life ripped into shreds over the past few years by a man vengeance for her lover, and even on the loneliest night fall into the arms of said Psychopath. That is not going to happen, and I was furious with that turn of events to this story. Lastly, I was irritated to see the further development of persons included in the story in love with Emma. We now have four people to date that love this woman. This is a bit of over kill, and I can't do it. While I loved the previous two books in this series. I felt as though this book crushed it for me. I HATE giving bad reviews, and I HATE discouraging, but I am lacking anything positive to add in this story. I don't know exactly where, but I feel this story went very wrong in this last book. ~BookWhisperer Reviewer Jax~
This is such a great series. I fell in love with Emma and Arthur, as individual characters and as a couple, about the time they started to realize their love themselves in Fallen. Theirs is a powerful, soul shattering kind of love that only happens once in a lifetime. A love that can cause even the most pragmatic mind to act in a completely illogical fashion. Ms. Slatton left me heartbroken with the endings of both Fallen and Cold Light and the plight she left for these two. I so wanted Emma and Arthur to find happiness, only to have my hopes dashed on the rocks time and time again. But… that just makes for a better experience- where you come back for more, because you just know- with characters that speak to a writer as eloquently as these two, she is incapable of leaving them be. There will be happiness and peace eventually. As readers, we just have to wade through the complications and perils life keeps throwing at them, and persevere until we reach that point with them.
As with both previous books, I was unable to put it down. I love when I can read a book in one sitting, even though it created a physical longing for the epic conclusion that is coming. And I have no doubt that it will be epic.
The usual cast of characters is present, each growing and evolving in their personalities and depth of character. Theirs is a unique, thrown together family that will do everything in their power to protect one of their own. I truly hope that if humanity is faced with something of this magnitude one day, that some will pull together and help each other as this group has done. A great story, with a great cast that is a definite must-read for Slatton fans, and those looking for an exceptional dystopian sci-fi series.
Far Shore was my most anticipated book release of the year and may I say that it was well worth the wait! I absolutely love this book (and the After series in general). I had received an advanced reader's copy from Traci L. Slatton and Parvati Press in exchange for an honest review. So, honestly speaking, this is by far my most favorite series. I recommend this book to everyone, it's just that great.
After Emma saves her daughter Beth, Alexei captures Arthur and tortures him. Finding out this information, Haywood gives Emma an ultimatum: him and the kids or Arthur and his band of friends. Emma would do anything to help her friends, especially after learning that Jeannie is having pregnancy complications. The choice to her is simple but complicated. She decides to leave her kids, her husband, and she goes to rescue her companions.
On yet another adventure, Emma faces many challenges. She thought rescuing Arthur would be complicated and she soon finds out that he is now a broken, shell of a man. He has lost all his luster and has been tortured to the point that he doesn't even look human.
When I first started reading the After series, I was under the impression that it was going to be a trilogy and after reading Far Shore I really hope there are more books and it really does become a series of books. Because frankly, three books just isn't enough for this exciting post-apocalyptic tale. I really love how Traci writes her characters. They are just so well developed and her writing impeccable. Arthur and Emma have come so far together and I can't wait to see what happens and how they will save the world.
*May contain small spoilers if you have not read book one and two*
Once again Emma was forced to choose between Arthur and Haywood, and once again she chooses her past and her husband. But when she gets word that Arthur has been captured and Jeannie is deathly ill and needs her help, she leaves once again to find the man she really loves.
A lot of loose ends are tied up in this book and the romance really starts to shine through. While there still wasn't what I would call a HEA ending, it was definitely more hopeful and very close to a HFN ending. This book really puts the spotlight on Emma and Arthur and their relationship. Forced to confront parts of their past and look towards what their future may really be like, they struggle together and seem to have a mountain inbetwen them at times.
This is also still very much an spocalyptic type novel. The Mists are evolving and seem to have a hive type mind driving them. The world is becoming more dangerous while at the same time a new type of civilization is developing from the remains. Emma and Arthur will both have incredible important roles (they are the main characters after all) to play in this process. I really enjoyed this series.

Far Shore takes place in an apocalypse world where the mists exist to destroy anything in its path and infected mankind into insanity. The mists also give certain people special abilities if they don't go mad. At the beginning of the story, Emma is asked to help a friend who is having trouble giving birth. Emma has developed healing power when the mists came into existent. She also found out that her lover Arthur is held capture by the very sociopath who has held her captive in the last book and decided to rescue him. In doing what is right, Emma left her husband and her two daughters with her husband's ultimatum of her never to return to them.
After rescuing Arthur, Emma is unable to call her healing power to heal him. At the same time, she is being hunted by the very sociopath who has held both of them captives and the mists is evolving into a thinking entity.
Far Shore is the third book in The After series. I haven't read the first two books. I do find that I didn't get lost in Far Shore. There are enough information to get the highlights of the first two books. Of course, I would read the first two books to catch up with the details of this storyline. Because I didn't read the first two books, I did find the beginning of the story slow until Emma and her friends went to rescue Arthur.
I was given this book by the publisher through Net Gallery for an honest review. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated for this review.
I've been following Slatton's After Series now since the first book was released and, frankly, surprised the heck out of me. The first book in the trilogy, Fallen, had me frantically turning pages and thoroughly enjoying a setting that was not only post-apocalyptic, but also more adult in nature. When Fallen was provided to me, I had spent so much time reading Young Adult fiction that I had been craving something more mature and Slatton provided that in spades. Far Shore, the third installment of the trilogy, was no different. Slatton thrusts her readers back into the bleak world and brings all of the major players together in a way that had me wondering just how it would play out.

This trilogy is a suspenseful roller coaster of an emotional ride. I won Far Shore through goodreads so I bought the first two so I could give a appropriate far and honest review. I found the first two rather enjoyable. Some parts were a little hard for me to swallow. Prostituting ones self for one. This is not going to be a happily ever after wrap it in a bow love story. Which I am far more used to. But the great writing made this a very good book series. I have never read anything like this series before. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys post apocalyptic and science fiction genres.
This is book three with at least one more coming. I haven't read books 1 or 2. I was quickly able to pick up the story line and put characters in their proper perspective. Emma is the main thread holding these books together. When Arthur created the "mist" to prevent war, the world or technology was destroyed. The mist killed millions around the world and it's developing and getting more powerful. This book focuses on rescuing Arthur from a "war lord" who can't get over the death of his wife and holds Arthur responsible. The mist does grant some people new powers, Emma's being able to heal with her hands. A good story and I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.
Another fantastic book! I was having technical difficulties and could not get the book onto my kindle and I could not wait for my husband to get home and help me so I sat at my computer and read the whole book in the last few hours. Now my neck hurts, but it was worth it. Emma battles to save Arthur, and help her friends and together they hope to find a way to end the mists that have destroyed so much. Great story and makes you really think about things. I look forward to the next book!
This book in the series just fell a little flat for me. Don't get me wrong, I still very much like this series it's just that this book felt like filler. Yes, there were a few developments but they just seemed thrown in there before they were fully formed. The writing, the characters, the world are still intriguing and I'm looking forward to the next book. This one just left me scratching my head when I was finished.
I feel like this book was a filler. There wasn't a whole bunch of mind-bending action and the tough parts are conquered early on in the book. Then it seems like there is just a whole bunch of waiting.
The cool thing was that I was sure I knew how it was going to end. But I was wrong. There is an open end. There will be a fourth!
