Great intro for beginners! I thoroughly enjoyed reading the tales I’ve come to know through a new voice, though I am anything but a beginner on the subject… but I think it is a perfect start for anyone interested in Japanese mythology/ myths/ folklore! The writer’s voice was straightforward, but also boasted the fantastical nature of Japanese Myth through his storytelling. I’d say it was a mix of dry/ vivid prose. Again, anyone interested in Japanese mythology… this is a good place to start! There may be better, but this is still a good book in its own right! ...more

Well this book was f*cking BEAUTIFUL, LOVELY, EXQUISITE. Near true perfection!
Let me start by saying that the illustrator, & author’s husband (!!), Jim DiBartolo, does with his illustrations what author Laini Taylor does with her words— Enchant ! His work in this book, as it always is, was a treasure trove for my eyes. Pure beauty, & enchanting storytelling, that told each story before it began with his hands… and it was truly breathtaking work. It was also fun to guess what would be happening in each story, because it was only enough to help you form an idea of what would happen. It was a brilliant idea, and just brilliant, striking, romantic, & truly gorgeous work. When these two team up, the angels SING!
Anyway, back to the writing ! This was pure brilliance, this collection of tales. For three short stories unrelated for naught but a kiss…? Just Pure, & Whole, Perfection. Few authors can so easily accomplish this— Laini Taylor’s prose & storytelling just go unequivocally unmatched!
Especially if you’re looking for a mere string of words that will make you FEEL romanced with no more than a bat of an eye when you’re reading a fairytale type story! I mean this woman is a damn literary seductress!
I will leave you with this (it was in one of my updates, but I am OB-SESSED! I just have an absolute fixation with this quote! It is pure BLISS!):
“With a quizzical look, Kizzy handed him her cigarette and watched as he raised it to his red, red lips and took a long suck. Her insides shivered a little, watching his lips close over her own lipstick prints. It was the closest she had ever come to a kiss. It was a kiss by proxy."

Well Holy mother of the Old Gods! I did NOT see THAT coming... ATALL! This installment is BRUTAL! I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't say who i'm absolutely enraged by... but oh my GODDDDD so ready; let me at 'em! Lol. Just overall one of the absolute BEST installments of the series. It truly feels completely atmospheric in the same way reading a well written high fantasy NOVEL does. It is not lacking in absolutely any way... the author & artist have created a BRILLIANT world through exceptional world building & character development, complex plots, many intertwining intriguing sub plots, etc; it really has it all.
The main storyline is so beautifully monstrous & at this point in the story, through this installment, I am truly amazed. The depth and complexity of this story seem unreal for a graphic novel. I may be repeating myself but this series just deserves the praise!
I cannot recommend this enough to those of you who enjoy complex dark fantasy & graphic novels!...more
