Add the captions again
To import captions, you'll want to go to File>Import (or use the shortcut Command + I) and upload your SRT file. Put the file in the timeline and, on playback, your subtitles should hopefully appear on the screen. If this doesn't work at all, it may be a problem with your version of Premiere Pro.

Jun 17, 2022 · You need to turn captions on in your preview window. Also need to open the caption interface. This should get you close, but changed a little for 2022.
You'll need to make sure captions are enabled and displayed in the viewer window. When they come in, it should take a minute or so to “scan closed captions”.
