[Rewarded Review] Awesome Mesh Wi-Fi - Big Improvement
MoyockTraveler· Review provided by bestbuy.com · September 18, 2023
I live in a two-story 3,500 sq/ft home with very thick walls/floors in a hurricane zone (rough sketch of the 1st floor with eero placement - attached). I’ve had a difficult time getting Wi-Fi throughout my house using the Mediacom modem/router combo. I live in a rural community and the internet speed varies wildly throughout the day; it is never constant. We’re supposed to get 1 Gbps speed, which I have never achieved, even plugging directly into the modem with the Mediacom Tech at my house. My best Wi-Fi speed I can get (and not often) is around 650 Mbps when I stand 3 feet from the router. The normal speed we get in the family room is between 200-350 Mbps. My biggest problem was that my son’s computer in the computer room achieved less than 100 Mbps speed because of the thick walls and horrible Wi-Fi transmission from the Mediacom router.

I took the eero assessment and it recommended the eero 6+ with three nodes. I plussed up to the eero Pro 6 AX4200 3-pack (so I could get the benefits of the Tri-band system); placing eero #1 next to the modem/router in the Family Room, #2 in the Computer Room, and eero #3 right above eero #1 in the Master Bedroom on the second floor. eero #1 is in direct line of sight of eero #2. The eero nodes are not connected with ethernet cables. I plugged an ethernet cable into the 2nd port on eero #1 and it is connected to the Family Room TV.

I used the manual and the set up was very easy. It doesn’t matter which eero node you use from the set of three to plug into the modem/router. Some of the YouTube videos had different systems or gave different instructions. I did follow the advice to label the eero Wi-Fi with the same name and password as what I had on the Mediacom modem/router combo.

The Result – Incredible change in speed of the Wi-Fi that we receive throughout the house. The speed is about the same in each room with one of the eero nodes, I even get an excellent signal in the garage now. As you move to other rooms there is a slight drop in the speed, but not by much, and exponentially higher levels of speed than before with using just the Mediacom modem/router. We could never get a solid signal upstairs, now with the eero Pro 6 we get a solid signal to drive all of our smart TVs in the upstairs bedrooms. While it doesn’t make our Mediacom internet signal faster or more consistent (HA!) – the eero Pro 6 is a game changer in making my family happier! This is one of the best/”most bang for your buck” tech purchases that I’ve made from BestBuy.

Best advice not in any of the manuals - I saw in one of the video reviews where the author indicated that you need to bridge your router prior to plugging in the eero. I called Mediacom, and the tech confirmed this and placed my modem/router combo into bridge mode. This is the condition where your router no longer transmits or receives any wireless signals, all the signals now go through the eero mesh Wi-Fi. The tech explained that if you don’t bridge the router, then you could have a degraded signal emitting from the eero because the signal strength is split between the router and the eero, and there could be other complications.
[Rewarded Review] Great product so far, lacks some features

The mesh system seems to work very well, the signal strength and coverage are better than the previous mesh network I set up using new and older Asus routers. I have 5 eero routers to support a 3600 sq ft house and an outbuilding. My two-story house has lots of walls. Realistically, the coverage claims made by router vendors are wildly optimistic and assume you live in an aircraft hanger.

On the plus side, the administration aspect is substantially less complex than with more full-featured equipment. The down side is the lack of advanced features for tweaking router behavior and settings and built-in security enhancements. One example is the wake on LAN feature Asus routers support. When I called support to ask if there is support for WOL or WAN, the agent had no idea what I was talking about and had to put me on hold. Regardless, the answer came back as a negative.

Another unpleasant surprise is the lack of support for third party ddns services, such as dyndns. With the latter, you can have multiple domains. This was very useful for me, since I have two LANs in two different houses. One subscription fee was all that was necessary to support both. In retrospect, the sales person failed to inform me of the annual fee for ddns from eero (the only available option). Not only that, he specifically said that dyndns was supported. I believe this was due to a lack of product knowledge versus an overt attempt at deception. I was also surprised to realize that not only is the eero annual fee almost twice what I pay for dyndns, but I would have to have two subscriptions to support two LANs. Hence, almost 4 times the current cost. I’ll stick with my Asus router at the other house and keep my dyndns subscription.

All that said, time will tell if the eero setup is more stable than what I had before. One piece of advice I can offer is to do whatever you can to use the Ethernet backhaul versus wireless. I had some difficulty not doing this on my first attempt with my old setup, where all devices on one mesh router would mysteriously go offline. Turns out I had cascading switches, which the mesh routers were sensitive to. I set up my fifth eero with cascading switches and have not had the issue yet. I don’t know if eero might have this issue, but so far, so good. Using an Ethernet backhaul will improve throughput and is likely more stable in general, so do that if you can.
[Rewarded Review] Strong enough for work WFH cord-cutters!

I get gigabit home internet from verizon, but the first floor router couldnt reach my basement home office (~1600 sq ft. Home.) My work laptop uses hogh end corporate security features that require a strong internet signal. When I researched this router system with mesh technology, I realized i didnt need wifi 6e because i dont own any 6e devices yet. I put one node next to the router, one in the office and on midway between the two in the kitchen. Now my whole home is covered. The settup was extremely quick and easy, and using the eero app is a joy. It very easily and clearly helps me view different devices on my network, and their speeds and signal strengths. I even got to use my same network name and password, so i didnt have to reset wifi settings on all of my devices. I test the speeds and tend to get around 400 download and 100-200 upload on all of my devices anywhere in the house or yard. And yes, now my signal is strong enough yo use my clunky work laptop to work from home. For ease of settup, ease of use, and quality, I highky recomend this (almost) top of the line Eero Mesh Wifi system.
[Rewarded Review] Great product - did return - but do recommend!

I liked these and do recommend, but did end up returning for another product - and here's why. I'm a IT nerd and these just didn't have enough options for me. They couldn't have made the setup process easier, so for 99% out there these will be perfect. I could only setup in the app, and they only connect at 1GB. If you have slower speeds than 1,000mb and want an easy to setup product then you will be happy. I had them hard wired on the back end, so each unit connected to my 2.5 gigabit switch via a physical cable. However with speeds over 1GB coming in via Fiber they maxed out at about 940mb which is how this works. Went with another unit that had 2.5GB input for WAN and can get 1300+ mb on wireless. But overall great product, easy to setup, great range, very small footprint sitting on a shelf. Would buy if I didn't want over 1gb in total speeds.
