COMPASS Talks

The Computing Platforms Seminar Series (COMPASS) is focused on talks by industry and academia around the general topic of computing platforms.

Democratizing 5G: Open Source and More

Abstract:

On paper (and in the press) 5G has set an ambitious goal of transformative changes, adopting a cloud-inspired architecture and supporting a new set of innovative services. But the gap between that aspirational story and the reality of 40 years of network operators and hardware vendors protecting their incumbent advantages makes for a challenging pivot. Of particular note is the challenge of democratizing the mobile cellular network, lowering the barrier for more stakeholders to innovate. The emergence of open source implementations of 5G is an important first step, but is not by itself sufficient. This talk introduces an open source implementation of 5G, called Aether, and discusses our experiences making Aether easy to deploy and use.

Short Bio:

Larry Peterson is the Robert E. Kahn Professor Emeritus of Computer Science and a Senior Research Scholar at Princeton University. He is a co-author of the best selling networking textbook Computer Networks: A Systems Approach (now open sourced), and writes systems-related books on emerging topics. He is the former CTO of the Open Networking Foundation, and continues to contribute to the Aether Project (now part of the Linux Foundation). His research focuses on the design, implementation, and deployment of Internet-scale distributed systems, including the widely used PlanetLab and MeasurementLab.

Professor Peterson is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the ACM and the IEEE, the 2010 recipient of the IEEE Kobayashi Computer and Communication Award, and the 2013 recipient of the ACM SIGCOMM Award. He received his Ph.D. degree from Purdue University in 1985.
