During travel, I typically depend on my dslr camera’s zoom feature to see into the distance. This next year, we’ll be traveling on a cruise to Antarctica. While on the ship, my husband keeps his camera handy but I may not bring mine along since we’d usually end up taking the same photos anyway. However, Antarctica will be different. Between seeing whales, sea lions, penguins and other wildlife, I want to be able to see all of these fabulous creatures even if my camera isn’t with me. I’ll leave him to take the photos and I will be able to see up close with this monocular. I already have another one but it is less powerful and the image is rather cloudy. The eyepiece is smaller so it is difficult to center the image without the black edges intruding.
This monocular is several levels better than the other one I own. It is larger and heavier, but not so large that I wouldn’t pack it on excursions. On the contrary, I plan to keep this in my sling bag at all times. It comes with a neck strap that is detachable so I can use either neck or hand strap and easily switch from one to the other. It has rubbery cups to protect the eyepiece and the larger distal end. When held, the focus roller is easy to reach using one hand only to hold and adjust focus. In addition to the included neck lanyard and hand strap, it includes a drawstring bag. This is a nice size for use by an adult, but children’s hands would most likely be too small to grasp and focus with one hand. If you see my attached photos, I took one pic of my backyard. Look near the top right of the photo to see a small orange spot. This is the spot that is visible through this monocular as seen in the next photo. As you can see, it is greatly magnified! Because I was actually trying to take the photo through the monocular eyepiece, it really isn’t displayed as sharply as the image is when viewing with eyes only, but you can get an idea of the extent of magnification.
I’m really impressed with the crisp, clear images. I think the only way to get a better view would be with binoculars, which would be larger and heavier. FIVE stars!!
