"A thriller packed with nonstop action, real-life name-dropping and enough cutting-edge science to make you wonder how much of it could be true." —Kirkus Reviews

The newest entry in the sizzling international thriller series featuring Nicholas Drummond, from #1 New York Times–bestselling author Catherine Coulter.

Freshly minted FBI agent Nicholas Drummond is barely out of his Quantico training when he and his partner, Mike Caine, are called to investigate a stabbing on Wall Street.

Their investigation, however, yields more questions than answers. It quickly becomes clear that the victim, John Pearce, was more than the naval historian and antiquities dealer he appeared to be. What Drummond doesn’t know is that buying and selling rare books was Pearce’s cover, and that he had devoted his life to discovering the whereabouts of a missing World War I U-boat concealing a stash of gold bullion, and an unexpected surprise that only raises more questions. When Drummond and Caine find both of Pearce’s adult children have disappeared, the case assumes a new sense of urgency. The FBI agents know their best lead lies in the victim’s cryptic final words—“The key is in the lock.” But what key? What lock?

The search for Adam and Sophia Pearce takes them on an international manhunt, which threatens to run them afoul of an eccentric billionaire industrialist with his own plans not only for the lost gold, but the creation of a weapon unlike anything the world has ever seen.

Once again, I find myself reviewing a Catherine Coulter book. And once again, this reader is blown away by this outstanding book. I have been a fan of Ms. Coulter since the first SAVICH/Sherlock FBI book and it has been all uphill since. I have such a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that this author can continue to give her fans such amazing books with equally amazing characters and stories. Now, teaming with J.T.Ellison, another great author, the fans are treated with a new series, a Brit in the FBI. If the first two books are any indication of the strength of this series, fear not. This series is also filled with amazing characters and equally as thrilling stories. Simply adore Nick and Mike. Right up there with Savich and Sherlock. And the best part of reading both series is that the cross-over of character is like old home week. This fan has been reading these books so long that starting a new one is like seeing a good friend you haven't seen in s while or going to a family reunion. Ms. Ellison as well has given her fans two intense female characters in Jackson and Owens. So, of course, a book co-written by these two women has to terrific. And as you approach the last page of the Lost Key, you do not want it to end. Then you read the last page and you are elated to realize that we will see this cast of characters again. And then there is Nemesis coming in July and we are once again reunited with Savich and Sherlock. Thank you both for two wonderful books and the time spent reading them.

This is a good story and the main characters are well developed in the Coulter style. I found myself experiencing deja vu.....not once, but repeatedly. It was the same phenomenon we have all experienced when duped into buying a dolled-up copy of a re-released Nora Roberts novel. That never fails to anger but here it just was annoying.... Have I already read this? This sounds familiar.... I have seen that scene before... Did I just get duped again? Has Coulter followed Roberts down that deceitful rabbit hole???
I kept seeing Dirk Pitt Jr diving on a lost sub but he was with a Navy Seal named Dahlgren, not the RAF pilot Dahlgren that Nicholas Drummond dived with....was that scene in Cussler's Black Wind? ...or was it in Deep Six....? Anyhow, it feels like I have read this story before. I also think working more Marie Curie real history into the story line world be a good idea - she was a modern woman born a century too early!
It's a novel worth reading, but prepare for the little brushes with deja vu.

I am loving this series. I was hooked from the first book and now I'm definitely invested. I have to find out what's going to come next for this team. Catherine Coulter is a brilliant and gifted writer. Thanks to my cousins for the recommendation and the introduction to this author. I'm very much grateful.

Special Agent Nicholas Drummond’s first day as an FBI agent is a little unusual. Not only are he and his partner, Special Agent Michaela (Mike) Caine investigating a murder, but so many things happen so fast that they realize they’ve uncovered something absolutely huge and far reaching.

While I enjoy the long running and humorous Savich and Sherlock FBI series, there are aspects of this Brit in the FBI series I actually like better. There is definitely less humor and no couple du jour in this series. Nor do you have two ongoing investigations at once. Instead there’s practically non-stop action devoted to one case with their lives on the line often. And these first two books have a more international story. We’re taken to London, Scotland and Paris this time.

I like both Nicholas and Mike and their attraction to each other while still not dwelling on or doing anything about it. A spontaneous hug or kiss when realizing the other is okay or watching over the other. And while there are some secondary characters that feel somewhat wooden at this point, you’ve got to love Nigel, Nicholas’ butler. I hope we see a lot more of him as well as Nicholas’ family. We are provided contact with Savich and Sherlock, but it’s only through phone calls. But apparently the next book brings Nicholas and Mike to Washington.

And if you thought the NSA was invasive with keeping track of phone records, this story will really have you wondering what is actually possible.

This book is "a real page-turner." It starts off with charming and colorful background for a great cast of characters and quickly goes to ground with a fast paced mystery. Nicholas Drummond is a British in the FBI. He is also a computer genius and man of action. His partner at the FBI is Michaela Caine, experienced agent and woman of great personal strength and courage. The two work smoothly together.
Nicholas and Mike form a partnership in this story which lays a foundation for future adventures and leaves the reader wanting to have more time in their world. I recommend this book to anyone who is willing to suspend disbelief and spend a few hours unable to put the novel down! This book has charming characters, a plot with constant twists and turns, international settings and a maniacal arch villain. A fun read.
