"With more than 15 billion Wi-Fi enabled devices, Wi-Fi has proven itself as a technology that has successfully evolved over the past 25 years. The need for high-speed connectivity is growing, as Wi-Fi has evolved into a fundamental utility that is expected to be available everywhere. This comprehensive resource covers six generations of Wi-Fi standards including protocol, implementation, and network deployment for both residential and enterprise environments. It will provide readers with a new understanding of how to approach and debug basic Wi-Fi problems, and will grant those wondering whether to pick 5G or Wi-Fi 6 for their product the clarity needed to make an informed decision. Readers will find in-depth coverage of Wi-Fi encryption and authentication methods, including explorations of recently uncovered security vulnerabilities and how to fix them. This book also provides detailed information on the implementation of Wi-Fi, including common regulatory and certification requirements, as well its associated challenges. This book also provides direction on the placement of Wi-Fi access points in indoor locations. It introduces the most recent Wi-Fi 6E certification, which defines requirements for devices operating on the newly opened 6 GHz band. Wi-Fi 6 is then compared with 5G technology, and this resource provides insight into the benefits of each as well as how these two technologies can be used to complement each other." --

1. Rare combination of in-depth technical details at the same time serving as a ready reckoner / cheat sheet for specific lookup of information. e.g. specific examples from my case - quick read-up on 802.11 k/v/r details instead of having to go through several pages of the spec., quick look up on DFS radar detection and channelization in 6 GHz.
2. Newbies to WiFi not left behind : Even though this book is dedicated to WiFi 6, it does give a good overview of the previous generations of WiFi from 1 to 5, with all important details concisely provided for the reader to pickup the fundamentals.
3. Authors have combined technical details from IEEE and WFA specifications with their practical hands-on experience with products and handled the subject in a pragmatic manner. E.g. The section on “When to do SU, MU-MIMO and MU-OFDMA” discusses various factors that would impact the performance in these different modes and illustrates them with examples that does quantitative analysis.
4. A peculiar trait that I saw in this book is a chapter dedicated to a WiFi product implementation starting from Hardware, covering lower layers of embedded software all the way to the host software and upper application layers. It talks about the WiFi Chipset SoC aspects like CPU, memory, bus interface to the host platform and seamlessly switches over to Radio characteristics like impairments and calibrations to mitigate them, Tx EVM, Rx Sensitivity, & then gliding over to specific aspects of firmware and host software implementation considerations. This would give a unique end-to-end perspective to the reader.
5. The book is for the embedded hands-on developer as well as for a system level WiFi engineer looking at a deployment level across a home or an enterprise. You could use it when developing specific pieces of WiFi firmware or host software as well as one could use it while looking at an enterprise or home deployment and troubleshoot intricate problems like performance, coverage and connectivity.
6. Terse and to the point focusing on the specifics and the intent of the authors is loud and clear. This makes the book less bulky in size while providing all the relevant and precise information.

I strongly recommend this book for all newbies to WiFi as well as to experts to use as a ready reckoner. I have worked on WiFi products since WiFi 2 onwards up to WiFi 7 and I find this book very useful and relevant for my day job today. My sincere thanks to the authors for bringing this book out for the benefit of the wider WiFi community.

Describes Wifi6 features in a simple and straightforward manner for Wifi professionals bringing them up to speed quickly. Also covers important implementation details for Wifi 6 that I found very useful from product development. Very readable and can be read from start to finish without losing interest. Authors are experts in their field and have implemented Wifi chipsets and products.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Essential Reference Guide of anyone working in Wi-Fi or related protocols
Reviewed in Australia on September 5, 2022
As with any new standard Wi-Fi 6 (aka 802.11ax) saw numerous changes. While there is a lot of media-style coverage of its key features a single, detailed reference giving both an introduction to the high-level features and technical detail is supremely efficient for anyone who really wants or needs to know how these features are implemented.

The book kicks off with an appropriately sized review of Wi-Fi 1 to 5, with additional chapters on 6E which is gradually becoming available worldwide, and a comparison of cellular evolution and wi-fi.

WPA3 & OWE are covered in the chapter on security that also goes covers several recent attack vectors that Wi-Fi has been vulnerable to, each capturing a lot of on and offline attention.

Moving from specifications to the real world, a chapter on deployment outlines considerations like bandwidth sizing and ramifications of both larger channels and increase channel availability along with other best practices.

If you spend any time designing Wi-Fi networks, reviewing configuration settings, or analyzing traces with Wireshark the knowledge in this book will be of both great assistance and set you apart from your peers.

If you are looking to bring your knowledge up to date or if this is your first Wi-Fi reference book I would highly recommend this book.
