Among Texas Wildcatters, There’s No One Like the Fearless Rod Lewis One of the best things to discover from a news piece reporting a new oil and gas deal is the story that lies behind it no one’s talking about. That is unless one is inclined to dive deeper to understand the decision maker behind the deal. Reese Energy Consulting today has done just that to feature a fearless, larger-than-life Texas wildcatter billionaire behind the wheel of his 35-year-old company who continues to bet big beyond the border. REC today is following the latest news from Lewis Energy Group (LEG), one of South Texas’ largest gas producers. No secret to folks in the Eagle Ford, the San Antonio-based LEG has never been content to limit the geography of its oil and gas thrill-seeking. Those decisions would fall to its leader, Rod Lewis—coined by Forbes as the “only gringo allowed to drill in Mexico”—who became the first U.S. producer to sign a contract with PEMEX in 2004. And more (ad)ventures lay ahead to include natural gas operations off the coast of Colombia and now Lewis’s latest cold plunge into politically-turmoiled Venezuela with a PDVSA deal to rehab five oilfields in decline—two of which currently produce 3 MBPD. The Biden administration on April 17 ended a sanctions waiver on Venezuelan oil. Lewis and his latest mission to build Latin America’s next energy platform are equally fascinating. Born in the border town of Laredo, Lewis launched his company in 1983 with a single gas well in South Texas and a hellbent ethos to control his own destiny. Over 35 years, he’s proved a quintuple threat stateside with the whole wellhead-to-market enchilada that includes a fleet of drilling rigs, oilfield services, saltwater disposal, end-to-end midstream services, and commodity marketing. Lewis also happens to own the nation’s largest collection of air-worthy WWII fighter planes. What do you think? From Richard Spears - This chart, for example, is our view of revenues generated by each of the frac service companies from 2019 through 2025. What is not obvious is the total market share of the 4 largest frac service providers each year, but that progression of combined market share looks a lot like the trend in oil production market share by the largest US oil companies. In 2019 the 4 largest frac service providers had (combined) 50% of the NoAm frac market. In 2022, 60%. In 2025, 70%. If you go back 45 years ago when I was running a red blender, the 4 largest frac service companies combined had about 80% of the NoAm market.

One recent industry innovation, spearheaded by Ovintiv in the Permian Basin, is to pump into 2, 3 or maybe even 4 wells simultaneously. Simul-, trimul- or quattrofrac’ing (is that a word?) aims to reduce the rate per well, achieving lower wellbore friction, while increasing water and proppant throughput faster than the increase in necessary horsepower to do the job.    In single well frac operations, a lot of energy is “wasted” to overcome friction. While perforation friction may be a necessary evil to encourage better proppant distribution between perforation clusters, and the industry’s near-wellbore friction battle in horizontals has been mostly won with better initiation and perf designs, wellbore friction serves absolutely nothing.    As wellbore friction scales with rate to the power ~1.7ish, the recent evolution toward higher rates has pushed wellbore friction into the 1,000s of psi, where it is now responsible for 1/4 to 1/2 of all surface pressure to overcome. If you distribute that same rate over two wells, wellbore friction is cut to only ~30% of the original wellbore friction in a single well.    I show this benefit in the graph below. Assuming the same rate per perf and cluster, the only pressure component changing is wellbore friction. As overall quattrofrac rate doubles, but rate per well is cut in half, pumping pressures reduce by ~25%. Therefore, only ~1.5x more work is required to deliver a 2x increase in throughout.    Some companies currently experimenting with this are also reducing rate per cluster / perforation or reducing stage intensity. We recommend against cutting these corners - as we have seen in many studies, there are significant production benefits from higher rate intensity, stage intensity, proppant intensity and fluid intensity per lateral foot.    Essentially, frac’ing multiple wells simultaneously is done to deliver downhole throughout more economically. Operators will need to consider how extra iron, pumps, wireline runs, infrastructure and scheduling impact the optimal number of wells to be frac’ed simultaneously.  If the economics are favorable, this is another big step toward higher pumping efficiencies.    #shale #frac #innovation #efficiency #energy #oilgas
