TIE/HU Hunter (Art Commission by AdamKop)

So many amazing TIE Fighter designs in the Star Wars expanded universe to choose from, and yet when it came to the Sequel Trilogy J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson elected to use re-skinned versions of the Original Trilogy TIEs over the countless unique designs in Legends.

Many hardcore Star Wars fans sing the praises of the TIE Defender, but I feel this particular model is grossly underrated; the TIE Hunter.

It is the second most unique TIE variant in all of the Star Wars universe, next to the TIE Phantom. A seamless blend of the two most popular Original Trilogy starfighters- the X-Wing and the TIE Interceptor- into one beautiful ship.

The TIE/HU Hunter first appeared in the video game Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike. It was designed by the Galactic Empire as an X-Wing killer; it is armed with four wingtip-mounted laser cannons (though in game it is depicted as only having two, along with the TIE Interceptor) dual wing-mounted ION Cannons, and a pair of Proton Torpedo launchers with a capacity of six torpedoes each. It is equipped with deflector shield generators and a hyperdrive, as well as S-foils which open up to a 90 degree angle, and close to roughly a 45 degree angle.

The TIE Hunter is not as overpowered as the TIE Defender, but is a more modest, well-balanced starfighter not unlike the X-Wing.

This ship needs to be made canon again. I want to see it in action in future Star Wars movies, and more than anything else I want to play as the TIE Hunter in a modern Star Wars video game.

I often say they could’ve used this ship in some of the recent Star Wars video games; it would’ve been perfect as Iden Versio’s TIE in Star Wars: Battlefront II, since she normally uses just a reskinned TIE/LN. Or it could’ve been used by the Second Sister in Jedi Fallen Order, instead of just giving her a normal TIE Interceptor. It would’ve been especially well-suited to the Second Sister and the Inquisitors  for it’s name alone, but then it also has a hyperdrive, which would make it far more useful to someone who’s purpose is to travel the galaxy, and track down and kill fugitive Jedi.

If Project Maverick turns out to be the Star Wars flying game we all hope it is, I hope the TIE Hunter is part of it as a playable starfighter.
