Hotspots

The hotspots are derived from satellite data and may be affected by cloud cover and the satellite coverage

Latest Weather and Haze Situation

It was dry and cloudy over the northwestern and southeastern parts of the Mekong sub-region and the Philippines today, while isolated showers were detected in other parts of the Mekong sub-region. Scattered hotspots were detected mainly in the southern parts of Lao PDR, while few to isolated hotspots were detected elsewhere in the Mekong sub-region. Moderate smoke haze was observed in the northern and central parts of Myanmar and the southern and central parts of Lao PDR. Several air quality stations in the northern and eastern parts of the Mekong sub-region reported Unhealthy levels, with a few reporting Very Unhealthy levels. The overall hotspot and haze situation over the many parts of the Mekong sub-region could not be fully determined due to extensive cloud cover.

Showers prevailed over the southern ASEAN region today and the overall hotspot and smoke haze situation remained subdued. No significant smoke plumes were observed from satellite imagery.

Weather and Haze Outlook

Dry weather is expected to persist over the northern parts of the Mekong sub-region in the coming days, while isolated showers are forecast elsewhere in the Mekong sub-region and the Philippines. Although the expected showers may bring some improvement to the region, the hotspot and smoke haze situation is likely to continue over the drier areas especially over the northern parts of the Mekong sub-region, with some chance of transboundary haze occurrence. The prevailing winds over the northern ASEAN region are expected to blow from the south to southwest, except over the Philippines where winds are forecast to blow from the east.

Showers are likely to continue over the southern ASEAN region, which should keep the overall hotspot and smoke haze subdued. The prevailing winds over the southern ASEAN region are expected to be light and variable in direction.
