- In the 1970s, a man known as John Africa founded a controversial Black separatist organization in Philadelphia called MOVE. As MOVE gained influence, it attracted the attention of Philadelphia law enforcement. In 1978, a shootout between MOVE and the West Philadelphia Police resulted in the death of one officer and sent nine MOVE members to prison. On May 13, 1985, the City of Philadelphia bombed the MOVE headquarters, resulting in the death of six adults and five children.
