Prior to World War II several of the banks he owned did business with
the government of Adolf Hitler in Germany. After the U.S. government passed
a law forbidding American companies to do business there, Bush refused
to follow it and continued making loans to the Nazi regime. His
businesses were eventually seized by U.S. authorities as punishment for
his refusal to comply with the laws.
