Producer Paul Maslansky, who came up with the premise for the first Police Academy movie and got help from three world-class directors to push the troubled cult classic Return to Oz past the finish line, has died. He was 91.
Maslansky died Monday of natural causes at a hospital in Los Robles, California, his partner of 16 years, Sally Emr, told The Hollywood Reporter.
The New Yorker made his producing debut in Italy on The Castle of the Living Dead (1964), starring Christopher Lee, and he filmed George Cukor’s penultimate feature, the Elizabeth Taylor-starring The Blue Bird (1976), and Fred Schepisi’s The Russia House (1990), starring Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer, in the Soviet Union.
Maslansky, who collaborated often with Oscar winner Alan Ladd Jr., also produced Larry Peerce’s Love Child (1982), starring Amy Madigan in the true story of a woman who is impregnated by a guard in prison and has...

Correction: As Lisa Simpson teaches us, “Remember, ’tis better to remain silent and be thought fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." We’ve been fooled by an urban legend, the Season 4 DVD commentary for “Krusty Gets Kancelled” contains no such story about Julie Kavner’s boycott, no matter what you read on Wikipedia, the various Simpsons wikis or Cracked.com. We apologize for the error.

Marge Simpson is well-known in Springfield for taking moral stands, so it’s only fitting that her voice actor should do the same.

"The Simpsons" surely has one the most impressive lists of guest stars in all of TV history. Everyone from Michael Jackson to Elizabeth Taylor have appeared on the long-running series, which quickly became a cultural institution capable of attracting seemingly any public figure from any sphere of life.
Celebrities agreed to appear on "The Simpsons" with little hesitation, but the show has also hosted musicians, authors, politicians, and even prominent scientists such as Stephen Hawking. Often, as was the case with Hawking, these guest appearances make for some of the show's best moments, with the late physicist managing to get into a physical altercation with Principal Skinner before revealing his chair comes with a propeller that allows him to airlift himself out of danger.
But with "The Simpsons" now having run for 36 seasons, you're bound to have some duds among the plentiful cameos. With that in mind, here are the...

Kin Shriner who plays the role of Scott Baldwin on General Hospital (Gh) was so believable as a legal eagle that the ABC star almost convinced himself he was qualified. Well, his days of impressing seem to be over and he claims that he doesn’t plan on returning to the ABC show.
Kin Shriner Written Out Of General Hospital
In January 2022, Scott Baldwin who was fond of Liesl Obrecht was written out of the show. General Hospital fans saw that the actor went to Florida. At the time, fans really hoped that he was only temporarily off the show for the holiday season.
There are many characters temporarily written in and out of Gh. So, ABC fans wondered when Kin Shriner would return as Scott Baldwin. Then in May of 2023, he tweeted that his character was written out of General Hospital forever. Well, some Gh fans took that with a pinch of salt,...

Known to be a bit hyperbolic when it comes to his status at “General Hospital,” often claiming to have been “written out” or his “run is done,” only to return shortly thereafter, this time actor Kin Shriner appears to be done for good as Scott Baldwin on the ABC daytime drama series, according to some of his recent posts on X (formerly Twitter).
In response to fans inquiring about when his next appearance on the soap opera might be, Shriner claims to have “no plans” of returning. Further, he said a flat “no” when a fan asked that very question.
Shriner’s comments came earlier this month after he made a post highlighting the anniversary of Luke and Laura’s (Genie Francis and Anthony Geary) wedding.
In the post, he said, “Me and Elizabeth Taylor were the original wedding crashes [sic] , Iam ok with that !!!” His Taylor reference came as he...

From Pink Flamingos and Hairspray to Cry-Baby, Serial Mom, and beyond, John Waters has been shocking viewers with his signature brand of satirical camp that toes the line between arthouse and exploitation for more than half a century.
On November 21, Waters was presented with the 2024 Coolidge Award from Brookline, Massachusetts’ historic Coolidge Corner Theatre, an honor previously bestowed upon the likes of Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas, Julianne Moore, and Werner Herzog.
Launched in 2004, the Coolidge Award recognizes a film artist whose work advances the spirit of original and challenging cinema; an acknowledgment certainly befitting of Waters. The award’s 20th anniversary also marks the first presentation in the Coolidge’s recently expanded space, which opened last spring.

‘General Hospital’ spoilers confirm that on November 16th and 17th, 1981, Luke Spencer (Tony Geary) and Laura Collins (Genie Francis) (who was Laura Webber Baldwin at the time) wed in the most-watched soap wedding of all time.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: The Luke And Laura Controversy
Luke and Laura hold a controversial place in soap history. Their romance began with sexual assault. The story is the stuff of daytime legend, for better or worse.
Luke raped Laura in 1979 at the campus disco the night before he was set to be snuffed out by the mob. The show’s then executive producer, Gloria Monty, was told she had to bring the ratings up within two weeks or the soap would be canceled.
Monty saw an opportunity in Luke and Laura to turn the show’s dismal ratings around. And turn around she did. Luke and Laura were daytime’s first “super couple.”

There have been many stories about Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean bonding during the production of George Stevens’ epic “Giant” in Marfa, Texas, in 1955. Though not exactly a “Harold & Maude” scenario, the 24-year-old Dean also developed a strong friendship with Edna Ferber, the diminutive Pulitzer Prize-winning author of such classic novels as “So Big,” “Showboat,” “Cimarron,” and “Giant,” who turned 70 that summer in Marfa. Ferber, who never married, was seen sitting on the back of Dean’s motorcycle as they would take rides during breaks. And she even tried her hand at twirling the lasso.
Author Julie Gilbert, Ferber’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated grand nice and biographer (“Ferber: The Biography of Edna Ferber and Her Circle”), doesn’t think the two were in love. “He was very young,” said Gilbert, who writes about her great aunt and the making of the Oscar-winning film in her latest book “Giant Love” set for a Dec.

Billy Bob Thornton Says Taylor Sheridan Fills the Need for ‘Human Stories’ with Shows Like ‘Landman’
Billy Bob Thornton is getting on the Taylor Sheridan train and ready to ride it all the way to the bank.
This Sunday marks the premiere of Sheridan’s latest everyman drama, “Landman,” which follows Thornton as Tommy Norris, a crisis executive working in the West Texas oil fields brought in to handle fires and other catastrophes. While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently at the show’s Los Angeles premiere, Thornton told the publication that Sheridan’s grounded storytelling was his main reason for getting involved in the project.
“People are hungry for human stories,” said Thornton. “These days in the theaters, it’s mainly event movies and superhero things and animated stuff and all that; there are a few human stories to come through. But these things are like a 10-hour movie that explore human beings. And I think people are hungry for that and I think that...

“I’m politically incorrect sometimes,” Billy Bob Thornton said during a Q&a after the first episode of new Paramount+ series “Landman.” “I think you should always show two episodes to an audience. That’s the first thing. The other thing I think you ought to do is open up questions for the audience.” He paused. “We’re not able to do that tonight, and we did not show two episodes.”
The crowd and Thornton’s fellow cast members roared. The moment was in keeping with Thornton’s persona but also his starring role in Taylor Sheridan’s new series, set in the contemporary Texas oil fields.

Tales of the Unexpected (1979–1988) started off with a foundation of Roald Dahl-based stories, but over time, this classic television anthology sought out other inspirations. One such source was Elizabeth Taylor, an esteemed English author whose short piece of fiction, “The Flypaper,” was adapted in 1980.
Fans of the show will often cite this episode as one of the best, not to mention the scariest. In the troubling episode, a schoolgirl is hounded by a stranger, only to then realize her peril is greater than first imagined. Now, Tales of the Unexpected did not always live up to its title; some stories were more foreseeable than others. “The Flypaper,” however, caught everyone off guard, including the young and unfortunate protagonist who, despite her efforts, could not escape harm.
“She stared up at a flypaper hanging in the window — the only disconcerting thing in the room. Some of the flies were still half alive,...

One of the main issues with Christine Jeffs’ A Mistake is that it bites off more than it can chew. Through its protagonist, Elizabeth Taylor, the film talks about a lot of things yet doesn’t necessarily discuss the stuff that really matters. Most of the time, it felt like Christine had picked up some unnecessary chapters from the book, on which the film is based, because of which the narrative ends up dragging for no apparent reason. And the main conflict took a back seat while a proud and self-centered surgeon went through a transformative journey of her own. In A Mistake’s ending, Elizabeth did get her closure, but I don’t think viewers share the same feelings. So, let’s look at all the important events of the film that finally changed Elizabeth’s perspective towards life and her profession.

Medical dramas come with their own set of challenges. The professional jargon can bog down their overall dramatic impact. However, if made well, they can make us resonate with their pathos. The same happens with the 2024 New Zealand medical drama “A Mistake.” Based on Carl Shuker’s book of the same name, the film revolves around a fatal mistake that turns the lives of some medical professionals upside down. The film stars Elizabeth Banks in the lead role as medical surgeon Elizabeth Taylor. Besides her, the central cast includes Richard Crouchley, Simon McBurney, and Mickey Sumner.

The rise of demand for racing films has grown significantly higher over the past few years and Tom Cruise is reportedly contemplating making a sequel to 1990’s Days of Thunder. It’s a good idea, though, because he was able to bring back the nostalgia of the Top Gun franchise into the fold again.

One interesting angle fans can look into this prospect is that he and his ex-wife Nicole Kidman could make history by costarring again in the potential sequel. They notably met and fell in love on the set of Days of Thunder, so seeing them work together again on the big screen would certainly interest the viewers.

That Time Gal Gadot Faced Controversy Over Her Casting as Cleopatra—Here’s How She Responded to the Backlash! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Gal Gadot‘s casting as Cleopatra sparked controversies on race and representation in Hollywood. Her 2020 announcement resulted in excitement and echoed criticism from past portrayals, notably Elizabeth Taylor’s in the 1963 Cleopatra—while Netflix’s Queen Cleopatra faced backlash over its casting choices.
The anticipation surrounding Gadot’s Cleopatra was palpable. Teaming up with filmmaker Patty Jenkins and screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis, she wanted to tell Cleopatra’s story from a woman’s perspective. The project saw delays, but Gadot remained optimistic. She told Flaunt, “It’s a big task. I don’t want to [rush] making it— it needs…so much thought and care because it’s Cleopatra.” Her commitment to portraying the queen with the depth she deserved was evident.

The Savoy Hotel is a five-star hotel located in London. This hotel is committed to crafting a uniquely British experience, as evidenced by the food offered and the style of architecture. Upon visiting their website, you can tell the uniqueness of their identity means alot to them: in an attempt to flesh this out, they have an entire tab dedicated to “Savoy Experiences.” While there are many things to gush about that carve out a distinct sense of self for this hotel, perhaps the most notorious and distinct thing of all is that it was the Queen’s favorite hotel. Artists and famous elites alike have also enjoyed spending time here. As one would guess, this garnered it another nickname amongst the British people: London’s most famous hotel.
That fact alone should be enough to tantalize someone into booking a stay at the Savoy, but I’ll continue to provide some more facts anyway.

In 2002, Aaliyah played Akasha, the first vampire, in the film Queen of the Damned. Critics generally disliked the film, but she spoke about her excitement to take on the role, describing it as a “dream” part. It provided a chance to establish herself as an actor and, she said, she loved vampires. She explained why she sometimes felt like the creatures in her real life.
Aaliyah said she sometimes felt like a vampire
While Aaliyah was a major star, she didn’t want to sacrifice any of her privacy. She said she had even been this way before fame.
“I’ve always been mysterious,” Aaliyah told Vibe Magazine in 2001. “My mother and father always used to ask me, ‘What are you thinking, what’s going on?’ There are times when I don’t understand myself, you know what I mean?”
Her desire for privacy began to make her feel like a vampire.

Peter Yates' "Bullitt" is one of the most stylish cop flicks ever made. Those multi-screen opening credits designed by the great Pablo Ferro, that jazzily urbane Lalo Schifren score, those wildly cool outfits donned by Steve McQueen at the height of his laconic sexiness (some inspired by the suits sported by real life detective Dave Toschi) –- it's a stone groove punctuated by spasms of violence and, of course, a raucous car chase through the hilly streets of San Francisco. It's so ineffably pleasurable, you don't mind that the narrative is a sketchily plotted afterthought. Who needs an intricately structured story when you're watching, as Quentin Tarantino wrote in his book "Cinema Speculation," "one of the best directed movies ever made?"
You throw on "Bullitt" for the 1968-ness of it all (it's the apolitical flip-side of the coin to Haskell Wexler's roiling docudrama "Medium Cool"), as well as the...

Those who were driving through the intersection of Highland and Fountain in Los Angeles in the early 2000s got to know Tommy Wiseau very, very well. It was at that intersection that Wiseau chose to buy a billboard for his then-new film "The Room," and it featured a rather unflattering closeup of the man, staring directly into the camera, one of his eyes half-closed. The billboard stayed up for five straight years, costing Wiseau $5,000 a month.
It worked, though. Enough Angelenos drove past the billboard to become curious about "The Room" and seek out a screening at the Sunset 5 theater nearby. Those who saw it in those early days were utterly baffled. "The Room" is an intense infidelity drama about an all-around good guy named Johnny (Wiseau) whose fiancée Lisa (Juliette Danielle) instigates an affair with Johnny's best friend Mark (Greg Sestero). “More effort than it’s worth” possibly represents the harshest 5 words that can be strung together in the English language. For a film, that statement guarantees an immediate death sentence. In the case of Antonio Banderas’ The 13th Warrior, it spelled the extinction of an entire genre: the Muslim hero archetype.

Both films represent a central character destined for a greater purpose who is uprooted from their established life and thrown into a mission against a foreign enemy.

Although the title suggests it, Lonely Planet is not some outer-space sci-fi adventure, not even remotely. Perhaps it could have been called something more evocative of its tried and true genre, but writer/director Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) has crafted a somewhat standard and certainly familiar romantic drama about two people facing up to new self-revelations as they meet, talk, and finally hook up at a writers retreat in beautiful and remote Morocco. This kind of thing hinges completely on aligning with its stars, and with Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth passing the chemistry test with flying colors, Grant gets an ‘A’ for casting and placing them in an irresistible location that doubles as travelogue. What more do we need?
This is the kind of grown-up romdram Hollywood used to regularly serve up for adults and Grant isn’t reinventing the wheel here. There is oddly some comfort in the...

It looks like business as usual at Brentwood’s Country Mart.
Laptops and lattes sit on every table at Caffe Luxxe’s patio. Around the corner, a woman corrals two teens near luxury décor shop Hudson Grace. “Let’s go to Goop real quick,” she declares loudly in directing them toward a pitstop at Gwyneth Paltrow’s curated store. The pastry counter at Farmshop has a queue four deep, though the lunch rush is winding down. One wouldn’t be surprised to see Country Mart regulars like Larry David or Jennifer Garner on a quiet, sunny Wednesday afternoon like this.

Although Nicole Kidman recently accepted the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award in recognition of her four-decade acting career, there is no indication that her life’s work is anywhere near finished. Indeed, according to Gold Derby’s racetrack odds, the 56-year-old is well on her way to picking up her sixth Oscar nomination for her lead performance in the critically acclaimed “Babygirl,” which would make her the 13th AFI honoree to subsequently earn film academy recognition in a competitive category.
The fact that Kidman’s life achievement award was presented by her pal and costar, Meryl Streep, is quite fitting given that she’s the only woman to go from being an AFI recipient to an Oscar contender. Since receiving the AFI honor in 2004, she has racked up a whopping eight bids, including a successful one for “The Iron Lady” (2012). A previous champ for “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1980) and...

Dame Maggie Smith was many things. Hilarious and tragic. Elegant and aloof. Enchanting and deadly serious. Most will attribute their appreciation of her multiple-generation spanning career to roles in the “Harry Potter” or “Sister Act” franchises or perhaps “Downton Abbey,” which elevated her fame to a level she often spoke disdainfully of. For Smith was not an actress who was in it for the red carpets or accolades — though she received many, including two Oscars, five Baftas, four Emmys, and a Tony — but rather treated acting as a sturdy profession, one that required of her the utmost presence while on set or stage.
