Rupert Grint, widely recognized for his portrayal of Ron Weasley in the beloved Harry Potter series, has found himself facing a significant financial setback.

Rupert Grint has been ordered to pay £1.8 million ($2.3 million) following the resolution of a prolonged legal battle with Hm Revenue and Customs (Hmrc), the United Kingdom’s tax authority.

The Root Of The Dispute

This hefty bill stems from a dispute over the classification of £4.5 million in earnings from residuals linked to the Harry Potter series.

These residuals — encompassing income from DVD sales, television syndication, streaming rights, and other royalties — were initially categorized by Grint as a capital asset, a classification subject to a lower tax rate.

However, Hmrc contended that these funds should have been reported as income, which carries a significantly higher tax obligation.

In 2019, Hmrc ordered Grint to pay the disputed sum. The actor’s legal team subsequently launched an appeal, disputing the tax authority’s stance.

Neon said today it’s closed a $200 million-plus credit facility led by Comerica Bank.

The funding, which follows the leading indie distributor and producer’s previous facility with Comerica from October of 2022, will be used to bolster core operations, including film acquisition, development, production, and distribution, while also expanding into new markets. The investment will further support strategic initiatives and strengthen its international footprint, driving additional growth.

Earlier this year it debuted a new international sales strand, with Cannes its first official stop, launching international for Keeper, the next genre film by Longlegs helmer Osgood Perkins.

The infusion, which could keep “Anora” star Mikey Madison in lucite platform heels until the end of time, is led by Neon’s existing credit provider Comerica Bank. The raise will contribute to film acquisition, development, production, distribution and market expansion, Neon said Monday.

“Comerica believes in the vision of Neon and couldn’t be more thrilled to support their continued growth. Vertigo Releasing has acquired U.K. and Ireland distribution rights to “The Kingdom,” directed by Corsican filmmaker Julien Colonna. The organized crime thriller and coming-of-age drama is set for theatrical release in spring 2025.

The film, which bowed in the Un Certain Regard strand at Cannes, centers on a teenage girl named Lesia who discovers her father, a crime boss, hiding out at a remote villa with his clan. Set against the backdrop of Corsica in 1995, the narrative follows the father-daughter pair as they’re forced to flee when violence erupts in the criminal underworld.

The picture introduces newcomers Ghjuvanna Benedetti and Saveriu Santucci in the lead roles of daughter and father, respectively, with the production featuring a predominantly Corsican ensemble cast.

It has now become one of the top five arthouse films of the year, crossing the $20 million mark at the North American box office. The list also includes Ralph Fiennes starrer Conclave. Neon’s thriller Longlegs is also one of the arthouse movies this year that crossed the $20 million milestone. It featured Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe in the lead roles. It is Neon’s highest-grossing movie domestically and one of the highest-grossing independent movies of the year.

Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh’s We Live in Time collected an estimated $1.13 million this weekend, according to Box Office Mojo’s data from 1,160 locations across North America.

Exclusive: David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil), Ashley Greene (Twilight), and newcomer Samantha Cochran will topline The Cure, a horror thriller from director Nancy Leopardi that has wrapped production in Los Angeles.

Movies are empathy machines, as Roger Ebert once wrote. The best films allow us to experience emotions we may not have felt otherwise through a particular character’s story. But some movies conjure emotions that we’re actively seeking out. Happiness. Joy. Love. We call these “feel-good movies.” Everybody has their go-to stable of films they return to over and over again when they need a boost — or maybe just an escape.

Nicolas Cage is unrecognizable as the title character in the horror movie Longlegs. Key special effects makeup artist Felix Fox and Harlow Macfarlane worked 2½ hours every day to transform Cage into the satanic serial killer.

“There was about four designs,” Fox said. “What they settled on after we tested on was that we would go a little bit more extreme.”

Fox said the original concepts were less pale white and less cosmetically altered. The final Longlegs pays homage to Lon Chaney’s Phantom of the Opera, she said. Furthermore, they had to age Longlegs from the 1970s to the ‘90s.

“He has two looks for it,” Fox continued. “One is the ‘70s and one is with more of the beauty makeup, a little bit of blue eyeshadow.”

With a slew of excellent, critically acclaimed horror films in 2024, could awards bodies finally give them more consideration? A few thoughts.

Horror films have long produced some fine, memorable performances, but they rarely tend to break through into the awards conversation. Or even if they’re talked about, they’re usually doomed to receive no love from the awards bodies themselves.

Why? Great question, and one that probably doesn’t have a simple answer. In general, horror films have been seen as trashy, low-brow forms of entertainment despite their long history of tackling social issues amid all the blood and guts. It’s only recently, with the rise of so-called “elevated horror” – anyone else hate that term? – that the genre’s reputation has started to slowly change.

Demi Moore, Denis Villeneuve, Malcolm Washington and Jason Reitman were announced as this year’s honorees of the Sffilm Awards Night.

The awards night, which “honors exemplary achievement in film craft and is a fundraiser with proceeds from the event supporting the organization’s mission to discover, nurture and showcase the next generation of film artists,” according to the organization, will take place Dec. 9 at San Francisco’s Gateway Pavilion at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture.

Robert Pattinson has come quite far since his role in the Twilight movies, which, to be fair, was one of his worst acting jobs. Throughout the four films, Pattinson’s performance progressively worsened. However, he did not have much to go on with the vampire character. Pattinson proved to be a performer in films like The Childhood of a Leader, Good Time, and The Lighthouse.

Pattinson was not a fan-favorite when he was cast in the role of Batman. However, he surprised fans with his darker take on the character, something Matt Reeves also got credit for. The film has now set a major benchmark that James Gunn will have to surpass with his Dcu film, The Brave and the Bold. However, Pattinson’s upcoming projects seem to have more promise than his role as the Dark Knight.

Exclusive: Andrew Lewis Caldwell (The Matrix Resurrections) has joined the recurring cast of Spider-Noir, the upcoming MGM+ and Prime Video live-action series based on the Marvel comic Spider-Man Noir. Details regarding his character are under wraps.

From executive producers/co-showrunners Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot and Sony Pictures TV, Spider-Noir tells the story of an aging and down-on-his-luck private investigator (Nicolas Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.

Lamorne Morris, Brendan Gleeson, Abraham Popoola, and Li Jun Li also star in the series.

Spider-Noir is produced by Sony Pictures Television exclusively for MGM+ and Prime Video. Harry Bradbeer is set to direct, and executive produce the first two episodes. Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers.

US-based independent film financier Tpc has opened an office in London, spurred by the launch of the UK’s Independent Film Tax Credit (Iftc) to igniteproduction of lower and mid-budget movies in the territory.

Tpc recently provided finance for Longlegs, starring Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe, and Stephen King adaptation The Monkey, starring Theo James and Elijah Wood, which will be released in February 2025 by Neon.

Tpc’s parent company is The Forest Road Company, the owner of well-known media and entertainment investment bank Acf which is based in London and Los Angeles.

Legacy characters have become a common feature in superhero movies. Some examples, like Spider-Man: No Way Home, have been big hits, while others, like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, were less successful.

The next MCU films expected to feature many legacy characters are Avengers: Doomsday (coming in 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (coming in 2027). However, with over 50 characters rumored to appear in Secret Wars, it’s hard to know which of these rumors are actually true.

Alex Perez from Cosmic Circus recently reported that Marvel is considering including All legacy characters in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. This came up during his November Ama, and Perez is known for his reliable track record with leaks and scoops.

Perez explained that Marvel wants to bring back legacy characters like Tobey Maguire, Wesley Snipes, and Nicolas Cage, but not just for quick cameos.

Sony and Amazon/MGM's Spider-Noir series appears to be taking some major liberties with the source material, but given how obscure this Variant of the web-slinger is, does it really matter if "Ben Reilly" is beneath the mask instead of Peter Parker?

The 60-year-old Oscar-winning actor took a quick lunch break in between scenes of his upcoming series Spider-Noir on Monday (November 11) in Los Angeles.

Nicolas was seen wear a dark green overcoat, gray suit, and a black fedora as he chatted with a co-star during their break.

The new series “tells the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”

This is not Nicholas‘ first time playing Spider-Man Noir. He voiced the role in the animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Spider-Noir has been officially ordered to series already at MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video.
