Warning: This article discusses major spoilers (and lots of gory imagery) from "The Monkey."
The horror genre is off to a fast and bloody start in 2025, thanks in no small part to the wall-to-wall gore fest that is director Osgood Perkins' "The Monkey." The latest Stephen King adaptation is quite the swerve from what fans may have expected from the filmmaker behind last year's acclaimed "Longlegs," a moody and rather bleak foray into the occult. This time around, moviegoers have been bludgeoned with a tone that combines horror and comedy in equal measure — and nowhere does that feel more apparent than in the many, many grisly kills sprinkled throughout the film. Longtime King readers ought to be well familiar with the source material about a killer windup toy monkey mowing through hapless victims.
The absurdly over-the-top nature of those deaths will almost certainly end up lingering most in the minds of moviegoers,...

The Legally Blonde‘s Dorky David actor Osgood Perkins, is now a celebrated filmmaker and has one of the most wickedly brilliant minds in Hollywood. And if movies like The Monkey and Longlegs are any indication, his imagination knows no bounds, and that is exactly what the industry needs right now. Though he’s been in the industry for years, his name exploded overnight following the success of Longlegs, starring Nicolas Cage.

But rather than taking the mainstream route or diving into superhero films, Perkins is now fully committed to bringing his eerie, unconventional visions to life. And honestly, that’s exactly why fans can’t wait to see what he does next. Here’s what he had to say about his approach and what’s coming up in the years ahead!

Actor Nicolas Cage has been sued by his ex-wife following their adult son’s physical attack on her last year.
Christina Fulton, 57, claimed that Cage had ignored signs of mental health issues in their son, Weston Coppola Cage, 34, and enabled Weston’s emotional ramp-up to the incident. She is suing Cage, 61, for negligence and Weston for assault and battery.
Weston has pleaded not guilty to both charges. An attorney for Cage responded, “The allegations by Christina Fulton against Nicolas Cage are absurd and frivolous…Mr. Cage does not control Weston’s behavior in any manner and is not responsible for Weston’s alleged assault of his mother.”
The physical altercation between Fulton and Weston occurred on April 28, 2024. Fulton chalked up her son’s behavior to a “mental health crisis,” saying she received multiple emergency texts from Weston’s friends. When she arrived, Weston assaulted her multiple times in a “manic rage,...

Osgood Perkins has guts – literally and metaphorically. The filmmaker knew it wouldn’t work to be precious when adapting “The Monkey,” a short story by Stephen King, hitting theaters Friday. So Perkins held nothing back. “You can’t worry about offending an audience; you can’t focus on honoring it too closely,” he notes. “There’s no pandering going on. There’s no timid storytelling. You have to have the guts to execute it.” He means it physically as well — his effects artists developed objects referred to as “guts cannons” and trucks loaded full of blood to kill people in increasingly gory and creative ways.
It’s a faster pace for Perkins, who has mastered the art of discomfort with slow-burn, atmospheric films like last year’s hit “Longlegs.” And the plot is simple: Theo James stars as twins whose lives have been cursed by the existence of a wind-up toy monkey that,...

Marvel Studios isn’t the only one with a movie kicking off summer on May 2 with Thunderbolts*: Lionsgate has just added Joe Carnahan’s Shadow Force to that weekend.
The pic starring Kerry Washington and Omar Sy follows the duo who once were the leaders of a multinational special forces group called Shadow Force. They broke the rules by falling in love and go underground in order to protect their son. With a large bounty on their heads, and the vengeful Shadow Force hot on their trail, one family’s fight becomes all-out war. Carnahan co-wrote the script with Leon Chills.
The pic also stars Mark Strong, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Cliff “Method Man” Smith. Washington produces with Pilar Savone, Stephen “Dr.” Love and Sterling K. Brown.
Lionsgate presents Shadow Force in association with Media Capital Technologies. It’s a Made with Love/Simpson Street/Indian Meadows production.

The Monkey Director Osgood Perkins Doesn't Think Of The Film As A Horror Movie [Exclusive Interview]

Osgood Perkins may be the most quietly unpredictable Hollywood filmmaker working today. Think about it: Prior to 2024, he was a respected if low-profile indie horror director, making his name with singularly dread-filled, offbeat films like "The Blackcoat's Daughter" and "I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House." Prior to that, he was a character actor, turning up in supporting roles in films as varied as "Legally Blonde," "Secretary," and 2009's "Star Trek." Even the film that was supposed to be his big A24 horror movie debut, 2020's "Gretel & Hansel," got swallowed up by the Covid-19 pandemic, meaning he was still more of an underground favorite by the time his masterpiece, "Longlegs," was ready to debut.
When that movie blew up the box office last year (thanks in large part to a fantastically effective marketing campaign along with a signature performance from star Nicolas Cage), Perkins seemed to have finally arrived.

Daniel Day-Lewis Schindler’s List (Photo Credit – Instagram/Facebook)
Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis working together sounds like a dream. But before 2012 Lincoln, their paths nearly crossed on Schindler’s List. Only one problem—Day-Lewis wasn’t feeling it. Not because of the role. Not because of the story. But because he wanted Martin Scorsese to direct it, not Spielberg. Enter Liam Neeson, and the rest is Oscar-winning history.

Schindler’s List was actually handed to Martin Scorsese first. Steven Spielberg was attached to the film for years but wasn’t sure he could pull it off. So, he passed it to Scorsese, thinking (as what Spielberg told Entertainment Weekly), “Marty won’t shy away from the heavy stuff.” But the second he did, Spielberg had a change of heart. We probably don’t need to tell you that Nicolas Cage has led an eventful personal life over the years.
But the eccentric screen legend’s latest legal drama stems not from his actions, but rather from those of his troubled son Weston.
Back in April of 2024, Weston was arrested for assaulting his own mother, Christina Fulton. It was not his first arrest on domestic violence charges.
Now, Fulton has filed lawsuits against both Weston and Nic, claiming that the latter enables his son and brings out the 34-year-old’s worst tendencies.

Last year, Osgood Perkins’s oddity Longlegs captured horror fans’ attention. The Nicolas Cage-starring thriller earned plenty of fans from critics and audiences alike. And now, Perkins has returned with one of the wackiest splatter flicks you’re likely to see in cinema. The Monkey is an adaptation of Stephen King’s short story. The film offers Theo James, Christian Convery, and Colin O’Brien the chance to play twin brothers. It also features a fine performance from Rohan Campbell, the star of Halloween Ends. Looking for a return to over-the-top and blood-soaked shenanigans in horror? The Monkey will hit the right beats.
Recently, I had the great pleasure of chatting with some of the stars of The Monkey. Stepping into the room to speak to Theo James and Osgood Perkins, I offered a little nostalgia for Osgood. My first job in Los Angeles was at a record/video store.

Nicolas Cage has spoken out after his ex Christina Fulton accused him of enabling their son’s bad behavior, which ultimately led to 34-year-old Weston Coppola Cage allegedly assaulting her.
“The allegations by Christina Fulton against Nicolas Cage are absurd and frivolous,” the actor’s lawyer told TheWrap in a Thursday statement. “Weston Coppola is a 34-year-old man. Mr. Cage does not control Weston’s behavior in any manner and is not responsible for Weston’s alleged assault of his mother.”
Cage’s commentary comes after Fulton sued him and their son on Wednesday for their respective roles in an April 2024 incident that turned physical. Last July, Weston was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon after what she called a “mental-health crisis.”
In her lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court and obtained by TheWrap, Fulton claims Weston has “a history of committing violent assault and battery and harming numerous individuals.

What Did Nicolas Cage Say About Eating A Live Cockroach? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
While filming the 1988 black horror comedy Vampire’s Kiss, Nicolas Cage made a bold (and stomach-turning) decision. His character, Peter Loew, a delusional literary critic who believed he was a vampire, originally had a scene where he was supposed to eat a raw egg. But Cage had other ideas. “I thought eating a cockroach would be more effective,” he told Yahoo Entertainment. “I’ll never do that again. I’m sorry I did it at all.”
That wasn’t a one-take horror. He had to do it twice. Twice the crunch. Twice the regret. Vampire’s Kiss, directed by Robert Bierman, wasn’t exactly a smash hit. Despite Cage’s mind-boggling performance and a cult following, the film tanked at the box office. It did, however, cement Cage’s reputation for fully committing to roles – sometimes to extremes.

Osgood Perkins follows up Longlegs with a wacky, gory motion picture about a toy monkey. Here’s our The Monkey review.
Writer-director Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs was one of the biggest success stories of 2024. And for good reason; the serial killer horror starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage had a “suffocatingly tense opening” and was “the most unnerving and flat out strange horror” of last year, according to our own Ryan Lambie.
Perkins now returns to cinemas with a very different horror. If Longlegs crawled under your skin and burrowed itself in there for days, even weeks, The Monkey – adapted from the 1980 short story be Stephen King – repeatedly slaps you in the face.
The Monkey, Perkins’ fifth film as a director, revolves around a wind-up toy monkey. In a fun opening sequence, Adam Scott’s pilot brings the toy to a pawn shop, trying to make it someone else’s problem,...

The 1997 favourite Con Air has got a new 4K remaster, and director Simon West suggests a fresh 4K release is coming soon.
It’s no secret that Disney hasn’t been the finest archivist of many of its 1990s favourites, only now getting around to 4K remasters of a bunch of box office hits. Catalogue stuff outside of the blockbusters is struggling to get too much of a look in, unless James Cameron happened to direct it.
Still, signs of life. Disney inked a deal a little while back with Sony, for the latter to handle its disc output. Then, earlier this year, The Digital Bits website confirmed that a 4K upgrade of the much-loved Con Air – one part of the unofficial Nicolas Cage action trilogy – was now available on iTunes.

Whenever a Stephen King horror movie surfaces, one can expect the maestro to share his feelings on the subject. In the case of "The Monkey," his opinion is far more interesting than usual considering the movie's sheer oddity. It's based on King's 1980 short story of the same name, which is about creepy wind-up toy monkey -- with the added horror element of every clash of the cymbals the monkey holds signaling an impending death (the cymbals have been exchanged for a drum in the movie for surprising reasons). It's also the latest movie from the acclaimed horror director Osgood "Oz" Perkins, who has established himself as one of the most interesting creators in the genre with films that range from the gothic ghost story "I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House" (2016) to the Nicolas Cage-fueled serial killer thriller "Longlegs" (2024).

In the ’70s and early ’80s, perhaps the only thing that Stephen King liked more than a child with a psychic gift/curse was an inanimate object that becomes possessed by evil. A car, HGVs and even a laundry press lurched into life to wreak destruction, and all of these mechanical menaces made their inexorable way from page to screen, directed by John Carpenter (Christine), King himself and Tobe Hooper (The Mangler).
The Monkey, first published by Gallery magazine in 1980 and revised to feature in King’s 1985 collection of short stories Skeleton Crew, located genuine revulsion and terror in a wind-up toy. Eyes shining with “idiot glee” and lips pulled back in a “carnivorous” grin, the hirsute curio shuddered to life to clap its cymbals… and Death danced. The monkey was, in short, evil incarnate.
The main sustenance is course after course of ketchup-covered set-pieces...
So who better to adapt...

Can you blame Oz Perkins for feeling cursed? The eldest son of Hollywood icon Anthony Perkins, the actor turned director lost his famously closeted father at an early age to AIDS. Less than a decade later, his mother, actress and model Berry Berenson, perished aboard American Airlines Flight 11 during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Well acquainted with death and its cruelest deprivations, Perkins’s work is in conversation with itself on the nature of trauma as inheritance, from his boarding school-set debut feature, The Blackcoat’s Daughter, to Longlegs, in which Nicolas Cage’s serial killer functions as an agent of the chaos wrought by parental malfeasance. But with The Monkey, it feels as if Perkins is finally moving on by throwing his hands up in a riot of entrails and arterial spray.

Whether or not you believe that Osgood Perkins’s previous film “Longlegs” was actually a dry comedy disguised as a horror film, one distinct possibility has been made more and more plausible with the benefit of hindsight: Perkins himself may very well believe that to be the case, and the next time around, he wouldn’t make the mistake of leaving it up for debate. Fast-forward just over half a year, and Perkins is back to double down on the goofs by trading in a swollen Nicolas Cage for the next-best thing: a drum-beating monkey.
Now if the tonal obliqueness of that previous film was the result of a self-satisfied director locked with his toys in his own head, perhaps a helping hand from one of the genre’s enduring pioneers is what Perkins needs to open up the sandbox for the rest of us to play; in comes “The Monkey,...

Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy saw quite a few villains—both good and bad—played by some of the renowned actors in the industry. The greatest villain of all would be the psychotic Green Goblin, who made the first Spider-Man film memorable for generations of viewers. Willem Dafoe’s unhinged performance in the film played a huge role in the success of such a villain.

Dafoe was popularly known to audiences as the character actor who controversially played Jesus in Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ. Interestingly, he was chosen for the role over three other famous actors, which will be surprising for fans. However, it is hard to imagine anyone other than Dafoe in the role now.

When David Lynch passed away last month, a stream of tributes from those he worked closely with came in. We can now add Wild at Heart star Nicolas Cage to the list, who says that David Lynch was unlike any other director he has ever worked with.
Speaking with Empire for their April 2025 issue as which contains tribute to the director, Nicolas Cage said, “I never had more fun working with anybody than I did with David Lynch. And I think Wild At Heart is one of the best movies I’ve ever made. I’ll never be able to do another movie like that. [Lynch] cannot be replaced.” Lynch and Cage seem like a match made in heaven (where everything is fine) but they sadly only ever worked together on Wild at Heart — although it’s just the sort of film you’d expect them to collaborate on. In a movie landscape where the horror never stops, “Longlegs,” released last summer, was able to make more than the usual boo!-and-then-forgotten-in-a-week impact. It was a serial-killer mystery with a suavely creepy atmosphere and a showpiece performance by Nicolas Cage, who camped it up under long hair and pounds of makeup as an androgynous ringmaster sicko who reminded me of no one so much as the character of Witchiepoo from “H.R. Pufnstuf.”
“Longlegs” established its writer-director, Osgood Perkins (the 50-year-old son of Anthony Perkins), as a force in horror. Yet I wasn’t as wild about the movie as a lot of people were. It was most effective when the fear gathered around Cage’s performance. But as the mystery revealed itself, it turned out that we were watching an overcooked supernatural occult evil-doll movie. It was clear that Osgood Perkins had talent, and that he was influenced...

If there’s one thing you can rely on “Saturday Night Live” for, it’s delivering good celebrity impressions. Some are so good, in fact, that they draw the actual celebrity into a sketch with them.
Most recently, it happened when then-Vice President Kamala Harris stopped by just before the 2024 election to give Maya Rudolph’s version of Kamala Harris a pep talk. But this is a tradition that goes back literal decades. So, we rounded up each one we could find.

Back in September 2000, Marvel made history by re-imagining one of their most popular heroes ever. The original Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series took over the world by introducing unexpected changes to the character's mythos. The Green Goblin was pictured as a huge rampaging monster, Gwen Stacy would eventually perish at the hands of Carnage, and Norman Osborn was involved in the creation of the wall-crawler. However, while fans fell in love with these original stories, the most important contribution of the series would come after the death of its main character: Peter Parker.
Spider-Man died in his last fight against Norman Osborn, leaving New York City without one of its greatest protectors. At the time, it was a very shocking moment for superhero fans, but little did we know that Marvel had bigger plans in store. After Peter left the scene, Miles Morales swung into the picture and became...

Neon-disturbed latest indie-horror flick, “Longlegs,” recently became one of the biggest surprise hits this summer. An occult thriller that opened with mostly wide critical acclaim, the movie has slowly gone on to win audiences, as the global box office collection now stands at a stellar $47.3 million. What’s even more impressive is that it became the highest-grossing regional debut ever for the distributor house, marking 2024 as one of the best years for horror genre fans.
But that’s not to say that the Nicolas Cage starrer serves strictly as a genre film. In fact, the discourse regarding “Longlegs” has been pretty varied. While part of the audience has hailed it for evoking an unspoken existential terror manifested through its carnivalesque frights, others have admired the film as a mood-setting procedural thriller. Some are even calling it a long-awaited giant step in serial killer cinema. That’s probably why it’s...

Director Uwe Boll has launched production on his latest film, a vigilante drama tentatively titled “The Dark Knight,” currently shooting in Zagreb, Croatia. The movie stars Armie Hammer as Sanders, a justice-seeking protagonist who operates outside traditional legal boundaries.
Actor Costas Mandylor has joined the cast as Henry, an Interpol officer tasked with tracking down Hammer’s character. This casting sets up a potentially intense narrative dynamic between a vigilante and the law enforcement officer pursuing him.
“We’re very happy to add Costas Mandylor to our cast,” Boll said. “To see him acting opposite Armie Hammer is truly a pleasure.” The film reunites Mandylor with Boll after their recent collaboration on “Run,” which is currently seeking U.S. distribution.
Executive producer Michael Roesch praised Mandylor’s involvement, stating, “We already enjoyed working with Costas on our last movie and couldn’t be happier to have him back. His vibrant...

Filmmaker Uwe Boll is back with a new action-packed vigilante thriller, ‘The Dark Knight,’ starring Armie Hammer as a man who takes justice into his own hands. The film, currently shooting in Zagreb, Croatia, has also added Costas Mandylor (‘Saw’ franchise) to the cast. Along with this announcement, the production team has released a first-look image from the film, giving fans a glimpse of what’s to come.
In ‘The Dark Knight,’ Hammer plays Sanders, a man who goes rogue and begins hunting down criminals himself. Mandylor takes on the role of Interpol officer Henry, the man tasked with stopping him. The 2025 awards season may still be a few weeks from its final hurrah, but it’s already had an impact on the film industry as buyers and sellers prepare to congregate once more at the European Film Market in Berlin.
With a lineup of Oscar frontrunners that includes “The Brutalist,” “Anora,” “The Substance” and “Emilia Pérez” — coupled with some impressive box office figures that look only set to grow — this year’s race has highlighted the desire of cinemagoers for bold, director-driven, out-of-the-ordinary fare.
“When you look at ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘I’m Still Here’ and ‘The Substance,’ those films are unique, they told some of the best stories and bring a unique perspective on something,” said Scott Shooman, head of AMC Networks’ Film Group which encompasses IFC Films.
For Shooman, the EFM is exactly the place where international buyers respond to these types of packages — led by creatively minded directors.

Once upon a time, Disney was best known for their animated films. But somewhere along the line, they learned that they could make bank by using their existing intellectual property in a new way — by taking their old, beloved animated films and plopping them in the world of live-action. After all, what worked in two dimensions with pen and paper has to be even better with real people, right?
By this point, it seems as though Disney should have learned that isn't always the case. It's not enough to have a cherished IP in live action — you also have to bring something new to the table. And there are some Disney live-action adaptations that work better than others. Some are legitimately good films in their own right, while others are, well ... less than magical.

Since the nominations were announced on Jan. 23, the Oscar Best Actor race had narrowed into a two-man battle between a pair of two-time nominees: Adrien Brody of The Brutalist (who won his first time out) and Timothée Chalamet of A Complete Unknown (who didn’t). It would be a significant upset if either of these actors didn’t cart off the trophy. But shockers happen, as Brody himself knows all too well. If that happens, three other nominees are hoping to pounce: Ralph Fiennes for Conclave, Colman Domingo for Sing Sing, and Sebastian Stan for The Apprentice.
Let’s analyze the Best Actor contest in greater depth.

Why Did Nicolas Cage’s Wife Patricia Arquette Eat Garlic Before Kissing Ewan McGregor Onscreen? (Photo Credit – Wikipedia)
Nicolas Cage and Patricia Arquette were a power couple in the late ‘90s when both were reaching the heights of their careers. But in their golden era, a movie rarely lacked intimate scenes, making the presence of a smooching partner a given.
Cage and Arquette were no exception either. Like Hollywood relationships, they inevitably faced the awkwardness of filming intimate scenes with co-stars. However, they had a unique method to ensure professional boundaries remained intact — garlic.
While promoting the second season of the hit show Severance with Adam Scott, Arquette disclosed her peculiar agreement in a First We Feast video. The Boyhood actress recalled adhering to the pact when filming a kissing scene with Ewan McGregor in the 1997 thriller Nightwatch. “I’m so sorry, but I told my husband [Cage] I was going...

It's probably fair to say that "Audition" is the film that really introduced filmmaker Takashi Miike to a wider Western audience. In this nasty piece of work, a middle-aged man named Shigeharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi) who lost his wife seven years ago teams up with his friend,...

Our brave victim writer sits through the film site’s 0%ers to see what makes a bad movie. Will she emerge with her sanity intact – and are all these flops really so bad?
I have seen horrors so limp and lifeless they have turned into comedies. I have seen comedies so dedicated to killing every last one of your brain cells that they have become total horrors. I have seen sex scenes drained of all sex. I have seen Jim Carrey play against type as a hardboiled detective with a light Polish accent. I have seen Nicolas Cage play to type as a hardboiled action lead in a film with a ludicrous premise (more on that later). I have seen actors deliver lines such as: “You are like the most precious flower and your blooming can only be enjoyed once!” with varying degrees of success. I have witnessed this exchange...

Patricia Arquette recently told “Severance” co-star Adam Scott during a game of “Hot Ones Versus” that her actor ex-husband once screwed her over after they made a pact about doing sex scenes in movies and television shows.
“I was married to somebody at the time and we were very young and impressionable people,” Arquette said. “We made a deal that we were going to eat garlic if we had to do love scenes, so I ate garlic before I had to kiss Ewan McGregor and I’m like, ‘I’m so sorry, but I told my husband I was going to have to eat some garlic.’”
“Then he had to do a love scene and I’m like, ‘Well, did you eat garlic?’ He’s like, ‘I thought we were kidding,’” she continued. “I was like, ‘What?!’”
Arquette did not name her ex-husband, but the “Hot Ones” video showed red...

Recently, Nicolas Cage would address his growing concern about AI in his acceptance speech at the Saturn Awards, where he won Best Actor for Dream Scenario. Cage had stated, “But there is another world that is also disturbing me. It’s happening right now around all of us: the new AI world. I am a big believer in not letting robots dream for us. Robots cannot reflect the human condition for us. That is a dead end if an actor lets one AI robot manipulate his or her performance even a little bit, an inch will eventually become a mile and all integrity, purity and truth of art will be replaced by financial interests only. We can’t let that happen.”
As the technology evolves, so does the fear of artists. Many know AI is being used in certain facets of film and TV, but a great deal has spoken...
