Movies are empathy machines, as Roger Ebert once wrote. The best films allow us to experience emotions we may not have felt otherwise through a particular character’s story. But some movies conjure emotions that we’re actively seeking out. Happiness. Joy. Love. We call these “feel-good movies.” Everybody has their go-to stable of films they return to over and over again when they need a boost — or maybe just an escape.
If you’re looking to expand your horizons beyond whatever’s streaming on Netflix, or if you just need a pick-me-up Asap, we’ve got you covered. Below, we’ve assembled a list of some of the best feel-good movies to watch when you’re feeling down.

One neat aspect of the original "Frasier" series is that it featured a bunch of bonafide Hollywood legends as guest stars we never actually got to see. While many renowned actors showed up in the physical — from Michael Keaton to Linda Hamilton — many more only lent their voice to the beloved sitcom, calling into Frasier's Kacl talk radio show for some advice from the good doctor. In fact, before she appeared on the show's fourth season as Molly, a potential love interest for Frasier who quickly gets away, Linda Hamilton herself called into Dr. Crane's radio show in the pilot episode, voicing the character of Claire, a woman struggling to get over her ex-boyfriend.
Over the course of 11 seasons, many more prestigious guest stars called Frasier for advice. Kevin Bacon, Mary Tyler Moore, Carrie Fisher, Billy Crystal, Macaulay Culkin, Helen Mirren, and Bill Paxton are just some examples. But it wasn't just actors.

Saturday Night Live (or SNL) has been in the world ever since 1975. From legendary snippets to comedy sketches, SNL has helped several iconic comedians like Conan O’Brien and Billy Crystal shape their careers.

Although both people worked at different times in SNL, that did not mean their time on the live show was good. Sitting down for a recent chat, both comedians revealed that they had their fair share of stories from the show. Billy Crystal, however, had it worse.

That major twist in The Diplomat Season 2 finale doesn’t mean Grace Penn is a “bad guy.” At least not according to the TV show’s creator. The U.S. vice president, played by guest star Allison Janney, would have viewers thinking they too “would have made the same decision in that situation.”
[Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers from The Diplomat Season 2.]
Grace’s role in the attack on ‘The Diplomat’
Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), the U.S. ambassador to the U.K., finally got answers in The Diplomat Season 2. After the attack on a British ship in the series premiere that suddenly had her across the pond in a new job, she learned that Grace had been involved. Not just involved, but—gasp—she ordered the hit.
Grace explained herself in the finale. Her reasoning? Dominoes would’ve fallen leading to something even bigger. If the British people hadn’t come together in the wake of the national tragedy,...

This week's episode of the Pilot TV Podcast is a real diamond — or, to be more accurate, a real Crystal. That's right folks, legendary funnyman Billy Crystal is on the show chatting to our resident comedy expert James Dyer about Apple TV+ supernatural mystery series Before, which is... well, not a comedy. But they do chat about Friends, the evolution of sitcoms, and much more in an expansive chat [1:02:20 — approx]. And as if that weren't treat enough, we also have another couple of gems with us on the pod this week in the shape of Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch, the stars of Sky's new adaptation of the Frederick Forsyth's 1971 'analogue spycraft' classic novel The Day Of The Jackal. They sat down with our very own international man of mystery Boyd Hilton to discuss the show, assassins' work-life balance, six packs, and, er, Strictly Come Dancing [21:00 — 35:12 approx].

Judith Light doesn’t have any answers about what happens to us when we die (who does?), but she hopes that “Before,” a spooky new thriller in which she plays a ghost, will at least inspire viewers to ask questions about an afterlife. And yes, Light knows how that sounds, but she appreciates that the Apple TV+ series treats the subject with seriousness and sensitivity.
“A lot of people don’t talk about it because they feel uncomfortable, or they think it’s woo woo or silly,” Light says during a recent Zoom call. “We always talk about these things in terms of science and facts. But there’s all this energy that you’re expending while you’re alive. When you die, what happens to that energy afterwards? What happens between lives? Is there such a thing as reincarnation? Other religions and cultures treat that as a possibility. I...

After 35 years, When Harry Met Sally still holds up as one of Meg Ryan‘s most memorable performances.
Marking the film’s milestone anniversary, Ryan’s co-star Billy Crystal recently recalled the “guttural” reaction Princess Diana had to her infamous fake orgasm scene when the film had its “memorable” royal premiere at Leicester Square on Nov. 30, 1989.
“Princess Diana was coming, so we were all taught what to say and not to say,” Crystal noted Friday on The Graham Norton Show. “There she is, a magnificent person. We waited, Meg and I, and the limo pulls up and she gets out. She couldn’t have been more gracious, and stunning, and tall. Just her presence was astounding.”
After they were greeted with trumpeters, Crystal and Ryan were seated on either side of the Princess of Wales. “The lights go down, and she whispers to me, ‘I’m gonna take my shoes off,...

It doesn’t matter what your go-to genre is when it comes to streaming content, this weekend has something for everybody! Here are five shows to stream.
Are you into comedy and nostalgia? Make sure you have a Disney+ account because Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is now streaming. Well, not the entire season, but the first nine episodes are. The remaining episodes will drop on Disney+ weekly. Still, nine episodes is enough to entertain you and the family all weekend, because it’s a family-friend series.
Not interested in Wizards? No problem! Also on Disney+, you’ll find the two-episode Agatha All Along series finale. In case you missed it, the finale streamed earlier this week, and it’s one you don’t want to wait too long to watch. Speaking of finales you may have missed this past week, there’s also the Only Murders in the Building season 4 finale streaming on Hulu.

This Is Spinal Tap might just be the funniest mockumentary ever made, but no one said it was going to be easy. In fact, Michael McKean told People, “It was such a struggle to get it done.”
Part of the problem, McKean says, is that the comedy was breaking new ground. “There weren’t a lot of features like it at the time,” he noted. “What we had was 20 hours of film, and we got it down to 85 minutes. It was a long, long chore.”
Before it got to its final running time, there were several iterations as the film was whittled down from its initial 20 hours. A four-hour workprint has leaked online from time to time, revealing what amounts to the original times two and then some. Deciding what to remove must have been painful, especially for comic actors like Billy Crystal and Bruno Kirby whose best work ended up on the cutting-room floor.

Last week, the legendary Billy Crystal, who is largely known for playing comedic roles, stepped into a “serious” one for a miniseries executive produced by him, titled Before. Helmed by Sarah Thorp, the first two episodes introduced us to Eli, a child psychologist who was reeling from the loss of his wife, Lynn. He was going to a therapist, but that wasn’t helping him a lot. So, he was convinced that he needed to hang up his boots because an emotionally unstable psychologist would do more harm than good. But that was where he came across the curious case of Noah. Initially, Eli showed interest in Noah because the distressed kid randomly showed up at his house and started to display some symptoms of grave mental trauma. Eli also empathized with the kid’s stepmother, Denise, who was desperately trying to give Noah a life that she never got.

With its 50th season currently airing, Saturday Night Live has seen its share of ups, downs and humiliations. It, too, has seen well over 150 cast members take the stage throughout its history, and that includes plenty that you either forgot about or had no idea were even on SNL. We’re talking people like Gilbert Gottfried, Laurie Metcalf, Joan Cusack, Julia Louis-Dreyfus – you probably could have guessed these were all in the ‘80s…Far removed from her brutal days on SNL in the mid-’80s, Louis-Dreyfus remembers where it all started – and not in a good way.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus appeared on the latest episode of the “Wiser Than Me” podcast (via People) and remembered her “excruciating” audition for “Saturday Night Live.” The Emmy winner joined the NBC sketchy comedy show in 1982 and appeared on three seasons. At 21 years old, Louis-Dreyfus was the show’s youngest female cast member at the time.
“When I was just getting started, I was part of the Practical Theater company in Chicago,” Louis-Dreyfus said. “The producers of ‘SNL’ came to see the show and they loved it, and they hired all of us to come to New York and be a part of ‘SNL.'”

One of the famous scenes in “When Harry Met Sally…,” Nora Ephron and Rob Reiner’s autumnal rom-com classic, sees Harry (Billy Crystal) explaining why he always starts a new book by reading the last few pages: “That way, in case I die before I finish, I know how it ends.” Along with much of Harry’s advice, I don’t typically put this one into practice. Men and women can be friends, taking a buddy to the airport is no big deal, and impatient people reading stories out of order is probably how we ended up with all these in media res TV intros.
But boy, do I wish I had skipped to the end of “Before,” just to save myself some time. At least having seen all 10 episodes, I can confidently advise those few unfortunate souls curious enough to consider watching that they’re better off revisiting any other Crystal project instead.

Konstantin Stanislavski taught us that “there are no small parts, only small actors.” Film and TV familiar face Dabbs Greer believed that “every character actor, in their own little sphere, is the lead.” Both would probably have been excited about this year’s Oscar race, where several best picture contenders high-light the power of an ensemble film: no matter where a talent ranks on the call sheet, everyone in the film has some choice scene time.

Apple TV+’s Before launched to much anticipation, giving viewers a psychological thriller perfectly timed for the Halloween season. The series opens with Eli, a grief-stricken child psychologist played by Billy Crystal, who is still mourning his wife’s tragic death. Episodes 1 and 2 of Before lay down a mysterious and unsettling narrative. Here are the five key revelations:
1. Eli’s Nightmare Loops
The series opens with Eli dreaming of himself injured at the bottom of an empty pool, dragging his broken ankle to the diving board, and stepping off. Later, a shadowy figure resembling his late wife pushes him. This nightmare recurs, hinting at the psychological loop he’s stuck in, avoiding his unresolved grief over her death.
2. Lynn’s Death

Billy Crystal has long been a favorite of mine when it comes to comedy. Classics like When Harry Met Sally, Throw Momma From the Train and Cityslickers all played a part of my younger years. And now, a new audience is going to see Mr. Crystal in a very different type of role. Before, created by Sarah Thorp, offered the actor the chance to do something fresh. And something a little scary. The story revolves around a child psychiatrist dealing with the loss of his wife (Judith Light) and a troubled new patient (Jacobi Jupe). The cast also includes terrific performances from young Jupe and the lovely Rosie Perez. The new series is now playing on AppleTV+ (read our review Here).

Attention Oscar addicts: Bruce Vilanch is sharing secrets from his 14-year tenure as head writer of the Academy Awards on a new podcast.
On The Oscars: What Were They Thinking?, Vilanch and co-host Adam “Tex” Davis will revisit some of the most controversial chapters from nearly a century of Oscars history. Many of those controversies will be covered from Vilanch’s backstage perch as the telecast’s top scribe.
The first two episodes debut Nov. 11. A trailer teasing the season was released today.
“If you don’t count sore feet, relatives or politics, the Oscars are the most complained-about thing in America,” Vilanch tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Some of these complaints are as old as the awards themselves, which means people have been bitching for a hundred years. Here is a place where you can relive all of your favorite moments of righteous indignation and find out what really caused them.

Billy Crystal stars as Eli Adler, a child psychologist coming to terms with grief, in the Apple TV+ drama series Before. Created by Sarah Thorp, the show explores Eli’s struggle to move on from his wife Lynn’s recent suicide and the mysterious connection that develops when troubled young boy Noah suddenly enters his life. As Eli works to understand Noah’s experiences, he finds uncanny echoes from the boy’s visions in his own memories and nightmares relating to Lynn’s passing.
While known best for his comedic roles, Crystal delivers a nuanced leading performance here. He portrays Eli as a man wrestling with trauma and denial, seeking answers about Lynn that even his therapist can’t provide.
As Eli works with Noah, trying to communicate with the nonverbal child, secrets from his past seem determined to surface. Their growing bond forms the core mystery driving this psychological thriller spanning 10 episodes.

Despite the fact that he still just can’t get over the fact that NBC fired Shane Gillis for publicly making racist and homophobic comments, Lorne Michaels seems a tad less broken up about the recent nixing of Saturday Night Live cast members Punkie Johnson, Molly Kearney and Chloe Troast. While Johnson and Kearney were less vocal on the matter when the news first hit last month, Troast quickly revealed on Instagram that she was “not asked back to SNL this season.”
This was a real bummer to be honest, since all three of them were solid performers. And Troast was only given one season to prove herself as a featured player. Even within that brief window of time, though, she managed to stand out in sketches like “Little Orphan Cassidy.”

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from Your Monster.
In Melissa Barrera‘s new fairytail-esque musical horror comedy, she plays a beauty who embraces her inner beast.
Ahead of Your Monster‘s Friday premiere in theaters, the actress told Deadline she was inspired to take the role in writer/director Caroline Lindy‘s feature debut because the character ultimately learns to “not make [herself] small in the eyes of other people” through her romance with the titular beast.
She knows that struggle all too well, having been fired from her starring role as Sam Carpenter in the Scream franchise last year after expressing support for Palestine in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Barrera remains “very grateful and honored” to be still considered a scream queen by fans of the franchise, as well as her roles in Bed Rest (2022) and this year’s Radio Silence horror comedy Abigail. “I think the horror fandom is...

After making us laugh in When Harry Met Sally and City Slickers and several Academy Awardshosting gigs, Billy Crystal is bringing the drama with the new series Before, which premieres on Apple TV+ on Friday, October 25. In what the streamer calls an “atmospheric, character-driven psychological thriller” Crystal plays Eli, a child psychiatrist and recent widower who encounters a troubled young boy seemingly connected to Eli’s past. Our bet is that Crystal will deliver a powerful dramatic performance, much like these other comedic stars who wowed us with their more serious screen roles. Here are our picks for the best dramatic turns from otherwise comedic actors. 13. Jennifer Aniston in The Morning Show Aniston’s first big TV gig post-Friends is a powerhouse performance. In The Morning Show, she plays Alex Levy, a morning news anchor who gets her due respect in the wake of a network scandal that should ring familiar to Today viewers.

Billy Crystal is going darker than audiences have ever seen him before in “Before,” a new Apple TV+ psychological thriller premiering on Friday. But it was not a role that the actor and comedian expected to take on.
Crystal, who is best known for light-hearted roles in “When Harry Met Sally,” “City Slickers” and “Monsters Inc.,” plays child psychiatrist Eli, who encounters a troubled young boy named Noah (Jacobi Jupe) after recently losing his wife, Lynn (Judith Light). As Eli attempts to help Noah, their mysterious bond deepens, sparking haunting memories and unearthing unsettling secrets from the past.
He told TheWrap that the series, which he executive produced and developed in partnership with Eric Roth, went through many twists and turns to get to where it is today.

Review: Billy Crystal is not known for his dramatic performances. To be fair, the legendary comedic actor has delivered performances that blend humor with serious moments, notably in projects like When Harry Met Sally, Throw Mama From The Train, and Mr. Saturday Night. Legendary film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert had pretty mixed opinions when it came to movies based on Saturday Night Live sketches. They gave Wayne’s World two thumbs up, but called Coneheads one of the worst films of 1993. And for some reason they were massive fans of Stuart Saves His Family? Really?
But the duo’s harshest SNL criticisms, oddly enough, happened during an episode of SNL.
Siskel and Ebert appeared in the very first episode of the Lorne Michaels-less eighth season. The hook? They would be reviewing the season premiere of SNL — as in the one that was in the middle of airing. As Siskel noted during the sketch, it was “history’s first live review of a television show still in progress,” which is a pretty clever meta joke. It arguably worked far better than the episode’s central, highly-irregular conceit: that host Chevy Chase was...

Jack Quaid stole our hearts away as the very lovable yet sometimes infuriating Hughie Campbell in The Boys. Time and again, he has established himself as an extremely capable actor. After all, he is half Dennis Quaid and half Meg Ryan! Speaking of the rom-com queen, almost a decade ago, the actress took a break from Hollywood to focus on herself and develop herself as a human being.

When Nate Bargatze returned to host Saturday Night Live earlier this month, it had been less than one calendar year since his previous headlining gig in October 2023. There are two things I never thought I would say in the same sentence: “Billy Crystal stars in Before, an Eli Roth-produced psychological horror thriller.” While it’s refreshing to see Apple TV+ stream something more mainstream instead of the usual prestige projects that no one watches, this is a misstep in almost every way.
The series is poorly written, with disjointed scenes and weak tropes already filled with ’80s and ’90s thriller clichés. And when the story starts to trudge along, which is often, it throws in an inexplicable, dreamlike jump-scare cut that does nothing but cause headaches and a touch of vertigo. It’s only a matter of time Before the series sparks acute conversion boredom household-wide.

When Billy Crystal regularly hosted the Academy Awards, he liked to begin the show with a montage where he was inserted into the nominated films. The 2000 opening leaned more on Hollywood history, with Crystal appearing in vintage films like The Graduate and Psycho. There were still jokes about that year’s movies, though, like when a Charlie Chaplin homage included a title card where Crystal quoted the most famous line from The Sixth Sense: “I see dead people.” Crystal later had some more fun with the M. Night Shyamalan sensation with a song parody,...

I’m not saying Apple TV+ has an issue with repetitive storytelling, but the new drama Before is the service’s third series featuring a renowned comic actor playing a man mourning his dead wife. Not the streaming platform’s third series ever to rely on that hoary trope. Not even their third series this year to draw from that particular well.
Before, with Billy Crystal grieving a dead spouse, follows Disclaimer, with Kevin Kline grieving a dead spouse, and the second season of Shrinking, with Jason Segel still grieving a dead spouse. That’s three shows with this core conceit to premiere since… October 11.
Unfortunately, Big Widower Energy is far from the only way that Before feels like Apple TV+’s most Apple TV+ piece of programming to date. You could show me any glum, washed-out frame from Before and, even without knowing who was in it or what show it was from,...

Premiering on Friday, October 25th on Apple TV+, Before stars Billy Crystal and Jacobi Jupe, who I caught up with during a recent press day to discuss the psychological thriller.
“Before” stars Billy Crystal as Eli, a child psychiatrist who, after recently losing his wife, Lynn (Judith Light), encounters a troubled young boy, Noah (Jacobi Jupe), who seems to have a haunting connection to Eli’s past. As Eli attempts to help Noah, their mysterious bond deepens, sparking haunting memories and unearthing unsettling secrets about the past. The ensemble cast also includes Rosie Perez, Maria Dizzia and Ava Lalezarzadeh.
The upcoming ten-episode atmospheric and character-driven psychological thriller is created by Sarah Thorp (“The Bounty Hunter”) who also serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer. Crystal executive produces alongside Eric Roth, pilot director Adam Bernstein and producing director Jet Wilkinson.
The post Before Interview with Billy Crystal and Jacobi Jupe appeared first on Daily Dead.
