The logline for Amanda Kramer’s latest film, “By Design,” sounds both like the setup and the punchline for a winking joke. When a woman becomes envious and enamored with a striking wooden chair, she suddenly finds herself becoming said chair. Or rather, she ends up swapping bodies with it, forced to live thereafter as the inanimate object she was once so enthralled by. Outlandish and absurd in equal measure, Kramer’s Sundance dramedy is so obviously operating on its own quirky wavelength that when it eventually runs out of steam, you’re left wishing the “Please Baby Please” filmmaker could’ve pulled off this high-wire act.
When Camille (Juliette Lewis) arrives at a chair store with two chatty friends who barely register her presence, let alone her wants and desires, she’s hardly impressed with what she sees. The space is more of an art gallery than a furniture showroom.

Antonio Banderas had that kind of charm that made even Madonna shoot her shot — publicly. The pop icon was absolutely smitten, and she wasn’t exactly subtle about it. The only problem? Melanie Griffith wasn’t having any of it. Banderas’ wife at the time made sure to keep stuff in check and let’s just say things got so awkward that she ended up being banned from Madonna’s set.

When you’ve got the Madonna openly crushing on your man, you know he’s got some serious magnetism. Too bad for her — Banderas was already off the market, and Griffith made sure it stayed that way.

Offering a twist on the body-swap genre, Amanda Kramer’s Sundance Next entry By Design feels, at first glance, more suited to the stage or gallery than cinema. It’s a story about luxury, envy, and longing with a dry tone that requires patience but doesn’t quite deliver a rewarding experience beyond the metaphor it continues returning to: resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die. For the characters there is a certain fear of missing out and becoming simply another piece of furniture. When the narrator (Melanie Griffith) can no longer adequately provide the right expository information, the film switches to dance.
Juliette Lewis stars as Camile, a broke woman who lunches with pals Lisa (Samantha Mathis) and Irene (Robin Tunney) before going shopping at an exclusive furniture store that sells one-off chairs. Camile finds herself fixated on a chair that may or...

Since her female-led Lord of the Flies riff Ladyworld premiered at Fantasia Fest in 2018, director Amanda Kramer’s films have gotten progressively weirder and more abstract. Her subsequent films Please, Baby, Please and Give Me Pity! were both experimental musicals shot and performed in a vintage style. Please, Baby, Please — the more ambitious of the two — boasted the return of Demi Moore, bringing her into the arthouse and paving the way for her career resurgence as the star of The Substance.
By Design also makes a point to bring back actresses Hollywood has been ignoring for years — Robin Tunney, Samantha Mathis, Melanie Griffith and, of course, Academy Award nominee Juliette Lewis. And in Kramer’s dreamland they don’t have to play tired moms or put-upon teachers; they can simply live a stylish life, quipping and conversing with each other onscreen.

If you want to know the true meaning of love, find someone that looks at you the way Mamoudou Athie looks at a chair in Amanda Kramer’s surreal, stylish and militantly absurd comedy-drama By Design. Both specific in its intent and mischievously opaque in its execution, this willfully strange art project can switch from flip to serious in the blink of an eye, using a terrific cast to weave a trance-like state of oddness that somehow sustains to the finishing line. In Sundance terms, it fills a slot left open by Miranda July, America’s poet laureate of urban dysfunction, presumed missing in action since 2020’s Kajillionaire.
Like July, Kramer is concerned not so much with human beings as the space between them, opening on three women—Camille (Juliette Lewis), Lisa (Samantha Mathis) and Irene (Robin Tunney)—as they meet for their weekly lunch. Like an adult version of the Heathers of Heathers,...

Amanda Kramer made quite a splash with her last narrative film, Please Baby Please, and her latest movie, By Design, is an even more ambitious swing that landed it a spot in the Next competition at the Sundance Film Festival. By Design will hook viewers with its wacky concept, only to put them off with its dry tone, but its thematic richness will lend itself to intriguing analysis.
By Design Review
By Design tells the story of a woman who envies a chair so much that she endeavors to swap bodies with it. Although it may be billed as a “twist on the body swap genre,” don’t come into By Design expecting something akin to a quirkier version of Freaky Friday. It’s actually something much more intellectual and weird than you’d imagine it to be, even if you are a fan of Kramer’s past work.

In the simple yet sly opening shot of “By Design,” the latest film from writer-director Amanda Kramer, we begin not with a person, but a chair. Punctuated by inane chatter of the more human variety as we gradually fade into the scene, we see a wide assembly of distinct pieces of furniture meticulously arranged. It’s as if we’re glimpsing a painting or cartoon in a magazine, each piece holding their own spotlight. However, the one in the center is not just any chair. It’s a beautiful one, shot with increasing reverence so we can see every detail of its curved construction.
“My goodness, that chair is gorgeous,” we hear via playful, often poetic, narration by Melanie Griffith before we cut to a sad little meal being shared by Camille, played by a fantastic and committed Juliette Lewis, plus her two friends. The voiceover shifts into being biting...

“Who appreciates Camille as much as they do a chair? She’s never been able to just sit there silently and still be loved?”
Those words, spoken by an invisible narrator (Melanie Griffith) at the beginning of “By Design” synthesize the premise of Amanda Kramer’s latest work, a gore-free piece of body horror that seeks to explore female objectification in the most literal possible terms. Using abstract dance and painful silences to illustrate the contrasting experiences of a woman and an inanimate chair who switch bodies, the film unfolds like a thoughtful nightmare told through the distinct gaze that made Kramer’s films like “Please Baby Please” and “Ladyworld” unforgettable. The film often feels as impossible to definitively grasp as the coveted furniture that it follows — but whether that’s a feature or a bug lies in the eye of the beholder.

The next entry in our series of writers recommending their favourite comfort films is a tribute to Jonathan Demme’s zesty gangster comedy
There’s no more perfect song to open a movie than Rosemary Clooney’s Mambo Italiano in Jonathan Demme’s Married to the Mob. It’s a delightful nonsense song that mimics Cuban mambo music while spilling out lyrics that are about as authentically Italian as a suburban Olive Garden. It’s Demme’s way of announcing that his gangster comedy will be a zesty, multicultural puttanesca that may evoke The Godfather and other genre standards, but mostly indulges in the cartoon kitsch of Long Island goombahs. The film that follows isn’t quite a parody, a spoof or a satire. It’s merely an unmitigated joy from start to finish.

For whatever reason, Hollywood doesn't produce movies like "Legally Blonde" anymore. Brightly colored, fun, and undeniably optimistic, this Reese Witherspoon comedy succinctly captures the zeitgeist of the early 2000s, and it now serves as a time capsule to a more innocent time when it felt possible for a fashion merchandising student to usurp the Harvard snobs and become a full-fledged lawyer. Truly, director Robert Luketic's upbeat tone, to say nothing of Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith's snappy script, is a key reason for the film's enduring success -- it's the perfect underdog tale, featuring a likable character worth rooting for and an uplifting message about staying true to yourself and persevering in the face of adversity.
"Legally Blonde" earned solid reviews from critics, earned a pair of Golden Globe nominations, including one for Witherspoon, made a killing at the box office, led to two sequels (and counting), and even spawned a musical.

Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl offers a plum role for Pamela Anderson. In the film, the former Baywatch star plays Shelly, an aging dancer in a Las Vegas revue who must confront her uncertain future when it’s announced that the show will close. It’s a struggle that’s all too familiar to Shelly’s best friend, Annette (Jamie Lee Curtis), a showgirl turned cocktail waitress who’s also very much struggled to cash in professionally and financially.
Shelly and Annette’s friendship forms the emotional heart of this story that’s concerned with how women are valued for their looks and how women of a certain age aren’t valued for their experience. Through it all, Anderson and Curtis invest their characters with a lived-in humanity that’s wistful and moving, as well as clearly informed by their own experiences in Hollywood.

Hugh Dancy has been working as a screen actor for over 20 years, and ranking his movies from worst to best, including his turn in Downton Abbey, reveals a filmography varied in genres and styles. Since his breakout role in the 2000 TV movie David Copperfield, Dancy has amassed significant fame for such roles as Will Graham in the NBC television series Hannibal and Prince Charmont in the feature film Ella Enchanted. Beyond these headliners, however, Dancy has accrued dozens of other successful roles.
Born in Stoke-on-Trent, England, in 1975, Dancy was sent to theater class for misconduct at the age of 13 and discovered a passion for acting that would later take him far in the business. In 2009, he married actress Claire Danes after meeting her on the set of the movie Evening in 2006, and he has since also worked with her on the series Homeland. One of our favorite times of the month is when the Criterion Collection drops their releases for the months ahead and the batch its announced for March certainly doesn’t disappoint. Ranging from dark rom-coms to monster movies, Criterion is adding some proper deep cuts, as well as 4K restorations of two films that are already part of the collection.
The first film given the Criterion treatment is Alan Rudolph’s “Choose Me,” starring Keith Carradine and Lesley Ann Warren. Set in Los Angeles during the 1980s, the film follows a number of lovers violently weaving in and out of each other’s live, mostly crossing paths at a dive bar. A protégé of Robert Altman, Rudolph’s films, such as “Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle” and “Breakfast of Champions,” often carry a balance of absurdity and bite. Next up is the 1989 addition to the Godzilla cannon, “Godzilla vs. Biollante” from Kazuki Omori.

Tom Wolfe's social satire "The Bonfire of the Vanities" was published in 1987 and was constructed as a wry, readable send-up of New York's high society at the time. Its story follows a callow yuppie named Sherman McCoy who, while out on a drive with his mistress Maria, accidentally head into the Bronx. A series of small misunderstandings results in Maria taking the wheel and accidentally running over a Black teenager, Henry Lamb, then fleeing the scene. The accident is covered by a burned-out tabloid reporter named Peter Fallow, whose reporting leads to McCoy's arrest. The bulk of the narrative then focuses on McCoy's trial. No one is wholly good in "Bonfire," and most of the characters are largely bad.
The book was infamously adapted into a feature film by Brian De Palma in 1990, and, boy howdy, is it bad. Every character is miscast, with Tom Hanks playing Sherman...

A-listers are often remembered for their most famous roles in equally renowned films, but their careers include plenty of films, some of which can often be forgotten because of when they were released or the genre they more closely matched. Emilio Estevez made his big screen debut at the age of 11 in the film "Badlands," Terrence Malick's mood drama starring Emilio's father Ramón Estévez, who was better known by his screen name Martin Sheen. When Emilio was 14, he flew with his father to the Philippines for another film shoot. Sheen was playing the lead role in Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now," and the young Emilio was hired to appear as an extra. Sadly, his scenes were cut, but Estevez was inspired by his experience to write a play called "Echoes of an Era," and perform in the lead role. He was officially an actor like his father.

The 1980s era is famous for its trashy movies, but some are nothing but fun. Some of the best movies of all time are a product of the 80s, a time which is known for being cheesy, over-the-top, and full of enthusiasm. The world of film changes with every passing year, but the 1980s produced some of the most notable titles in cinematic history.
Trashy films are generally considered projects with certain defining features, such as confusing storylines, poor special effects, cringeworthy acting, or bad jokes. While some controversial 80s movies are labeled as such because their message is lost in translation, others are referred to as trashy because of the lack of effort or poor reception. Regardless of their execution, these trashy 80s movies are still fantastic and enjoyable to watch.

Angelina Jolie: a name that rings like a clarion call in the world of action-adventure cinema! If Hollywood had a Hall of Fame for butt-kicking heroines, she’d be the first inductee, no questions asked. From her iconic role as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider to Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the mother of six has gracefully danced through the action genre like a ballerina in combat boots.

But let’s not forget that the actress, 49, is more than just a fierce femme fatale; she’s tempted audiences in films like Changeling, and Original Sin. Nonetheless, it’s the latter that landed her in a bit of a pickle. Well, it all started when she made some comments regarding his co-star Antonio Banderas’ ex-wife that didn’t sit too well with the public.

Dakota Johnson met former president Barack Obama during his presidency while she was with her mother. As most moms do though, she managed to embarrass Dakota, even in front of the President.
The 34-year-old actress remembers her mother introducing her to the former president around the time that The Social Network came out.
Dakota recalls her mother’s conversation with the former commander-in-chief, “”He was talking to her and she goes, ‘Oh, Mr. President, this is my daughter. She just did a movie. She’s an actress, too.’”
Keep reading to find out more…
Seeing as Dakota’s mother is Academy Award-nominated actress, Melanie Griffith, it was no surprise that she was excited about her daughter following in her footsteps. The surprising part came as she continued to dive into Dakota’s role in David Fincher’s critically acclaimed film.

Since the 1980s, Demi Moore has inspired audiences with her emotional and powerful performances, but within her impressive filmography, there are some movies that stand out as her absolute best. Moore's career began on television when she earned a recurring role in the soap opera, General Hospital. From there, Moore gained enough attention that she was able to transition into movies. In the 1980s, she was part of the iconic group of young actors, the Brat Pack, boosting her to international fame. Since then, Moore has explored various genres and acted alongside some of Hollywood's best.
Like most established 1980s actors, Moore has an extensive and exciting resume. However, her best movies are those that stick out among the pack. These are films that were the most critically and financially successful. More than that, they are the projects that have defined Moore's career and have remained in the public consciousness for years after their release.

Dakota Johnson may be Hollywood royalty, but she's a successful actress in her own right, and has earned herself an impressive net worth. She first broke out with her role as Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, which brought her international fame. Since then, she has continued to showcase her versatility by starring in films ranging from indie dramas like The Lost Daughter to psychological horror in Suspiria. While her 2024 film Madame Web was a critical and box office dud, this won't stall her burgeoning career.
Born in Austin, Texas, Dakota Johnson comes from a prominent Hollywood family. She is the daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, and her grandmother is the legendary Tippi Hedren. Raised on film sets, Johnson made her acting debut at the age of 10 with a bit part in 1999's Crazy in Alabama, starring her mother and directed by her then-stepfather,...

One of the best things to happen in Hollywood in recent years is that Michael Keaton’s career got a major second wind (but don’t call it a comeback) after a somewhat lower-key period. While the extent of Keaton’s career downturn pre-Birdman has indeed been overblown (let’s not forget he was still a big enough star to play the villain in the RoboCop reboot months before Birdman came out), it can’t be denied that Alejandro González Iñárritu’s movie gave him a major boost. Since then, he’s appeared In some amazing films, including Spotlight, The Founder, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and The Trial of the Chicago 7. He has also done great TV work, such as the exceptional limited series Dopesick.
However, Keaton’s pre- and post-Beetlejuice/Batman career tends to be overlooked when discussing his filmography, which is a shame as he was already a...

It is pure alchemy when a show like The Bear not only entices viewers with its mouthwatering storyline but also seasons its cast with a sprinkle of stardom. Certainly, in its unrelenting quest to serve up a stellar second season, Christopher Storer’s series introduced one of Hollywood’s finest, Jamie Lee Curtis.

Taking on the mantle of Donna Berzatto, she donned the role of the mother of Jeremy Allen White’s Carmy. Meanwhile, the shadow of what-ifs loomed as Michelle Pfeiffer, once in the running for the role, bypassed the opportunity, leaving fans to ruminate over her menu of roles not taken that already included flicks like The Silence of the Lambs and Pretty Woman.
As 2024 Emmy experts make their predictions, there is a growing chorus of support for Curtis’ The Bear role, which is increasing the likelihood that an Emmy will be awarded.

There are shades of Legally Blonde and Private Benjamin in Amazon’s lesser, low-rent comedy about a Florida bartender with dreams of being an astronaut
There’s a well-tested, and mostly well-liked, formula being recycled in Amazon’s lightweight Fourth of July comedy Space Cadet. It’s the mildly rousing story of an underestimated blonde excelling in a more serious field, something Goldie Hawn aced in Private Benjamin and Protocol before Melanie Griffith took over with Working Girl and Born Yesterday, followed by Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde. It’s an easy, against-all-odds rise for us to get behind and a career-defining every-scene showcase for an actor who may have also found herself unfairly undervalued by the industry.
There’s something for both actor and character to prove, and when it’s done right, we should be able to taste the same hunger, cheering for an inevitable victory. But in...

With prominent supporting roles in classics like “A League of Their Own” and “Dick Tracy,” as well as the lead in the screen adaptation of the musical “Evita,” Madonna’s film career is well-established, but might never have happened without her star turn in the 1985 cult comedy “Desperately Seeking Susan.” A modern farce set in the scuzzy beauty of ‘80s New York City, the film follows a straight-laced housewife and a bohemian drifter who become intertwined in a criminal plot involving a pair of stolen earrings. While the film is led by actress Roseanna Arquette, it quickly became known as the “Madonna movie,” with her character’s fashion sense — which mirrored Madonna’s own — and her free-spirit energy coming to define the popular culture of the era.

Pacific Heights has mixed aspects of status culture, domestic and psychological thriller, giving us an intense, melodramatic, and juicy entry into one of the best subgenres. Add to that a surprisingly energetic directing style, alongside Michael Keaton going full psycho, and you get a decent early 90s Thriller. Today on Revisited, we head back to the 90s and dig into Lance Vlcek’s second entry into his Domestic Thriller Trilogy.
The film stars Michael Keaton, Matthew Modine, Melanie Griffith, Mako Mako, and Laurie Metcalf. In 1988, Bruce Willis committed a most grievous offense against entertainment journalists: he proved them wrong. Really wrong. Laughably wrong.
The newly minted star of ABC's "Moonlighting" drew the ire of just about everyone in Hollywood when 20th Century Fox paid him a whopping $5 million to star in the action film "Die Hard." This rankled rival studio executives, who only shelled out that kind of cash for long-established leading men like Warren Beatty and Robert Redford. While Willis might've been a minor media sensation due to "Moonlighting," with his surprise Billboard smash "The Return of Bruno" and his omnipresent Bartles and Jaymes wine cooler commercials, he had yet to prove himself worthy of a $5 million big-screen payday.
Before "Die Hard," Willis had scored a solid theatrical hit with Blake Edwards' dismally unfunny "Blind Date." This was the extent of his motion picture oeuvre when Fox declared him a massive marquee name.
