Steve Mosko, the CEO of Village Roadshow Entertainment Group since 2018, is stepping down, Deadline has confirmed.

The news comes amid apparent financial troubles at the finance and production company’s majority owner Vine Alternative Investments, though Vine did not comment on Mosko’s exit Thursday. Mosko was hired as CEO in 2018 after a 24-year career at Sony and 16 as Spt’s boss, as Village looked to push into TV and streaming.

Vreg, the umbrella company of Village Roadshow Pictures and Village Roadshow Television, has credits that include Joker and Mad Max: Fury Road.

In late December, it came to light that Village Roadshow was late on payments to writers working on their film and TV projects, and the WGA West issued a stop-work order.

“It has come to the Guild’s attention that over the last few months Village Roadshow hasn’t paid writers on numerous projects,” the guild told members at the time.

Besides my annual trip to the Toronto International Film Festival—at which I mostly saw films that have not yet been released stateside—I went to the movie theater twice this year. As someone who used to go at least once a week, coming to grips with that number is tough.

It happened for many reasons. Covid. Time constraints. The ease of truncated theatrical windows. And the worsening theatrical experience itself since one of those two visits (both press screenings) demanded three restarts before finally figuring out the correct aspect ratio. Don’t get me wrong: I’m glad they kept working to get it right because that film appears on this list, but you can’t tell me it would have been fixed had it been a regular public screening.

Well, Schmoes, as 2024 finally draws to a close, we reflect on a year full of ups and downs, box office shocks and surprises, and many unexpected hits and misses. If there is one thing for sure, there are always movies highly overrated and underrated by critics and fans alike. As the UnPopular Opinion Guy, I felt it was only fitting to issue my list of the movies I felt the masses got wrong. Some of these may shock you, and some may piss you off, but these are my honest-to-goodness perspective on the movies of 2024. Film financier William Santor, best known for bringing Hollywood titles such as The Baker (2022) and The Retirement Plan (2023) to his adopted home of the Cayman Islands, died December 28. He was 50.

Santor’s death has been confirmed by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service in multiple local media reports. The Canadian-born financier was found unresponsive at his home on the island and was later taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officers are investigating.

In a statement to Deadline, the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service said it is “carrying out an investigation surrounding the sudden death of a 50-year-old-man who is a Canadian citizen residing in the Cayman Islands.”

“The matter is an active investigation and all investigative lines of enquiries are being carried out,” the statement continued.

Deadline has contacted Productivity Media, Santor’s former company, for further comment.

Although Doctor Odyssey is still only in its first season, the new series has garnered a reputation for featuring at least one big-name guest star per episode, and one of them will surprisingly return in a future episode. The ABC medical drama TV show created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, follows the medical professionals aboard the fictional luxury cruise ship The Odyssey. Almost every week, the cruise hosts new passengers (and new illnesses and ailments to deal with). Most of them are played by actors many will recognize in Doctor Odyssey.

Bruce Willis requires no introduction. Apart from the (epic) "Die Hard" franchise, the actor has appeared in a wide range of mega-popular films — from "Sin City" to "The Expendables" — and established himself as a bonafide action hero. While Willis' career is peppered with more than one hundred performances, it's time to go back in time and look at one of his first acting roles before he got launched into stardom. Before his breakout role in "Moonlighting," Willis had a guest post in an episode of "Miami Vice," titled "No Exit." This season one episode would end up becoming prominent for more than one reason, as it proved to be a turning point in cementing the show's recurring themes and narrative archetypes.

This formulaic quality unique to "Miami Vice" might be perceived as stale by contemporary standards, but even when the series stumbled to find its footing, it was constantly pushing boundaries.

On Saturday, the union announced the stop work order, prohibiting members from business with The Matrix franchise and Mad Max Fury Road banner under Working Rule 8.

“It has come to the Guild’s attention that over the last few months Village Roadshow hasn’t paid writers on numerous projects. Village Roadshow owes writers compensation, interest, and benefit contributions but has refused to pay. As such, the Guild has determined that Village Roadshow is not reliable or financially responsible and requires the posting of a bond to protect writers. Village Roadshow has, to date, refused to do so,” WGA leadership announced in a memo. “As a result, Village Roadshow is on the WGA strike list until further notice.”

Joshua Jackson is “waging a one-man war” to greenlight a Broadway-themed episode for his hit ABC series “Doctor Odyssey.”

It’s not that Jackson, who executive produces and stars as Dr. Max Bankman, is particularly eager to sing — though he says coming up with little ditties has helped him learn the show’s complex medical jargon. Jackson is not really excited about dancing either: he and co-star Sean Teale (who plays nurse Tristan Silva) laugh, bemused, when the conversation during a special FYC screening of the show in Los Angeles turns to their dance-off (set to “Despacito”) in the pilot episode.

“We didn’t do a lot of dancing after that,” Jackson said, laughing. “I think they saw the dailies of me dancing and they thought, ‘That’s enough of that.’”

Exclusive: 20th Television has signed an overall deal with Erin and Sara Foster, the duo behind the studio’s big new comedy hit, Netflix’s Nobody Wants This, and their Fatigue Sisters Productions. Erin is creator, writer and executive producer and Sara is executive producer on the series, starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, which topped the streaming rankings in October, quickly earning a Season 2 renewal.

Development on Nobody Wants This began during a three-year pod deal the Fosters had at 20th TV from 2019-22. This marks the sisters and long-time creative collaborators’ return to the studio, a part of Disney Television Studios. Under the new multi-year pact, they will develop, write and executive produce original series through Fatigue Sisters for all linear networks and streamers, with emphasis across the Disney Entertainment Television platforms.

“We are so happy to be back in the fold at 20th Television,” Erin and Sara Foster said in a statement.

As seismic as that might seem, and the real pain some scribes are feeling this holiday season, it’s a temporary situation for Village Roadshow we hear as the label gets its house of cards in order to pay the people who’ve done the work already

What’s wrong? We understand the problem is with Village Roadshow’s majority stakeholder, Vine Alternative Investments, the specialized asset manager of $1.3 billion investments, who we’re told is having cash problems.

However, not every cruise week on the hit Ryan Murphy show for ABC, spearheaded by Joshua Jackson, Don Johnson, and Phillipa Soo is particularly reasonable, but the campiness of the medical procedural is part of its charm. The ridiculousness of some of the themes is part of what makes the show so good, but the difference in themes also makes some weeks better than others.

Each theme is also meant to uphold The Odyssey's promise of being a luxurious cruise line while taking in different passengers with every embarkment. However, the silliness of some cruises seems to directly contrast that very promise.

The good news is that it’s easy to watch the awards live. You can tune into ABC from 8/7c tonight, catching all the performances, wins, and more from the comfort of your home. It’s only airing live on ABC.

Don Johnson is opening up about Doctor Odyssey’s “dream” fan theory and if it’s true!

It’s been 40 years since Don Johnson exploded to stardom playing Sonny Crockett in the groundbreaking NBC hit Miami Vice. Johnson became one of the hottest actors on television in the cop drama with his terrific style and made the show iconic.

Johnson would score another TV hit in the CBS cop series Nash Bridges. He’s added a few TV shows since, like Eastbound & Down, Watchmen, and more, and is still a respected name in television circles.

Johnson is now enjoying a new act in his life, starring in the new ABC series Doctor Odyssey. He plays Captain Robert Massey, the head of the cruise ship who puts a good face on the various weekly antics. He has had some good banter with the guests, including one played by country music star Shania Twain.

Jamie Lee Curtis is an amazing actress in everything, but she's particularly great in the horror genre. For instance, in 2015 she starred in the hit slasher series "Scream Queens," playing Dean Cathy Munsch, whose no-nonsense demeanor and perpetual disdain for sorority girls help her survive a serial killer's weeks-long rampage through her college campus. The first season in particular was delightful in its silly, mean-spirited, violent charm, and Curtis was selling every single line the questionable scripts gave her. Curtis also starred in some low-budget flick in the '70s called "Halloween" or whatever.

Despite Curtis's final girl bona fides, her biggest critical success has nothing to do with the horror genre -- at least as far as Rotten Tomatoes is concerned. Don Johnson’s character on “Doctor Odyssey” is “a more modern kind of captain,” the actor told TheWrap ahead of Thursday night’s episode “Gay Week” episode, which means he’s unfazed when his once out-of-control younger brother (guest star John Stamos) reveals he’s part of a throuple.

“It’s a choice to be accepting and loving,” Johnson said on a Zoom call Thursday morning. “And I sort of took the adjustment that I’ve been through a lot with him already, in terms of his alcoholism and so on. And I know he’s gay, and this is a little bit surprising, but I am the brother who has no judgment.”

Johnson also answered the question of whether he knows about last week’s threesome with Avery (Phillipa Soo), Max (Josh Jackson) and Tristan (Sean Teale). “The captain knows everything.
