Ben Stiller is weighing in on the whole "you couldn't make my super controversial movie today" conversation, but—unlike some others who were mostly just yelling at clouds—he actually has a point. He's talking about Tropic Thunder of course, the "incredibly dicey" 2008 satirical comedy about a group of actors...

We Need To Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay is reportedly about to embark on another film: revenge thriller Stone Mattress.
With films like We Need To Talk About Kevin and You Were Never Really Here on her impressive resume, there’s no doubt that Lynne Ramsay is a celebrated film director. Given her penchant for making short films too, Ramsay has never been what you’d call a prolific director of features: her last film was 2017’s You Were Never Really Here, and before that, 2011’s We Need To Talk About Kevin. According to a new report, though, Ramsay’s next project may be her second to go before cameras in a single calendar year.
Ramsay has already finished up production on Die, My Love, a film ‘about a woman driven to the brink of insanity by marriage and motherhood.’ Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek all star.

In addition to her on-screen triumphs, the beloved Hollywood star Julia Roberts is also known for her complicated relationships with some of the industry figures, including her brother Eric Roberts, the Shakespeare in Love producer Edward Zwick, and the Hook director Steven Spielberg.

Another name that could fall under the same category is that of her former co-star Nick Nolte, who shared the screen with the actress in the 1994 romantic comedy I Love Trouble. Roberts openly discusses the behind-the-scenes tensions with Nolte, even describing him as “disgusting,” a remark that Nolte later reflects on years later.

We first heard that Cape Fear was being adapted for the small screen last year, and the trades have now announced that Apple TV+ has ordered a 10-episode series with Nick Antosca on board as writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
The project also has two filmmaking legends involved, with Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese set to executive produce.
One of the lead roles has been cast, with Javier Bardem set to play Max Cady.
Bardem has some experience playing remorseless killers after his Academy Award-winning turn as Anton Chigurh in No Country For Old Men. Cady is undoubtedly an even more twisted and vile character, however, so it will be interesting to see what Bardem brings to the role following Robert De Niro's iconic performance.

Apple TV+ is developing its next high-profile television project with the recently announced Cape Fear, produced by Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. Deadline reports that Academy Award-winning actor Javier Bardem will star in the series as killer Max Cady. He will also executive produce alongside Scorsese and Spielberg.
Cape Fear has been reimagined a few times now, with the story based on John D. Macdonald's 1957 novel The Executioners, which was adapted into the 1962 movie from director J. Lee Thompson. Thompson was heavily inspired by Alfred Hitchcock in the creation of his film, and the Apple TV+ series has been described as a "Hitchcockian thriller."
In 1991, Scorsese made his own version of Cape Fear. Scorcese's movie featured a stacked cast of actors like Scorsese's frequent collaborator, Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, and Juliette Lewis. In that version, Cady was a convicted rapist seeking vengeance against his public defender,...

Javier Bardem is a wonderful actor, a man whose filmography is filled with a diverse array of characters whose appearances span the genre spectrum. He is also, it would be fair to say, an actor who's really good at playing villainous psychopaths — be it No Country For Old Men's Anton Chigurh, Skyfall's Silva, Pirates Of The Caribbean's Captain Salazar, or Lyle, Lyle Crocodile's mendacious Hector P. Valenti. And according to Deadline, another unhinged wrong'un is now in Bardem's sights, as he has signed on to play the notorious killer Max Cady in the latest retooling of Cape Fear, which Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Nick Antosca are currently setting up at Apple TV.

On Monday, Nov. 18, Apple TV+ announced a new 10-episode series adaptation of “Cape Fear,” executive produced by and starring Javier Bardem as Max Cady, a killer who gets out of prison and haunts the lives of married attorneys Amanda and Steve Bowden. Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese are also onboard as executive producers.
The series is based on the 1957 novel “The Executioners,” which was previously adapted into the 1962 “Cape Fear” starring Robert Mitchum as Max Cady and Gregory Peck as Sam Bowden. That film was remade in 1991 by Scorsese, whose version starred Robert De Niro in an Oscar-nominated performance as Cady. Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange played the Bowdens, while Juliette Lewis earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nom for her role as the Bowdens’ teenage daughter Danielle.

Back in 2023, Apple TV+ officially ordered a series adaptation of ‘Cape Fear.’ The show is set to adapt Universal’s 1991 remake of a 1962 film under the same name, which was in turn based on the 1957 novel ‘The Executioner’ written by John D. MacDonald.
The film is about a convicted rapist who uses his knowledge of the law and its loopholes to seek revenge on a former public defender. He blames the lawyer for his 14-year prison sentence, claiming the lawyer purposely sabotaged his defense during the trial.
The series is being developed by UCP and Amblin. It will be the first TV project that Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg worked on together. They are executive producers along with showrunner Nick Antosca, who has worked on shows like ‘Channel Zero’ and ‘The Act.’ Other executive producers include Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey from Amblin, and Alex Hedlund from Eat the Cat.

Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are set to executive produce a new Javier Bardem-led thriller series for Apple TV+ based on “Cape Fear,” a film with ties to both Scorsese and Spielberg.
Apple TV+ has granted a series order for “Cape Fear,” which will be written and showrun by Nick Antosca. Antosca will executive produce alongside Scorsese, Spielberg and Bardem.
The series is based on John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel “The Executioners,” which inspired Gregory Peck’s 1962 film adaptation, “Cape Fear.” In the late 1980s, Steven Spielberg was attached to direct a new adaptation, but he passed the film over to friend Scorsese so he could make “Schindler’s List” instead. Scorsese cast Robert De Niro in the role that will be filled by Bardem, and the resulting 1991 film “Cape Fear” was a commercial success and scored Oscar nods for De Niro and Juliette Lewis.

Robert Pattinson has come quite far since his role in the Twilight movies, which, to be fair, was one of his worst acting jobs. Throughout the four films, Pattinson’s performance progressively worsened. However, he did not have much to go on with the vampire character. Pattinson proved to be a performer in films like The Childhood of a Leader, Good Time, and The Lighthouse.

Pattinson was not a fan-favorite when he was cast in the role of Batman. However, he surprised fans with his darker take on the character, something Matt Reeves also got credit for. The film has now set a major benchmark that James Gunn will have to surpass with his Dcu film, The Brave and the Bold. However, Pattinson’s upcoming projects seem to have more promise than his role as the Dark Knight.

Sorry, Henry Cavill! People Magazine keeps forgetting the Man of Steel actor every year when they prepare the shortlist for Sexiest Man Alive. Albert Finney as Kilgore Trout with Bruce Willis as Dwayne Hoover in Alan Rudolph’s adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions
In the second instalment of my conversation with Alan Rudolph on his adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast Of Champions, shot by frequent collaborator Elliot Davis (Equinox; Mortal Thoughts; Love At Large), we start out with what his friend, the novelist Tom Robbins, who has a cameo (as Pesky Weber), told him after the film was finished.
Alan Rudolph with Anne-Katrin Titze on the influence of Jean Cocteau’s Orphée on final scene: “Probably not directly, but you know, every little drop of water feeds the plant.”
The director/screenwriter has assembled the perfect cast of accomplices, including Albert Finney, Nick Nolte, Glenne Headly, Barbara Hershey, Omar Epps, Lukas Haas, Owen Wilson, Buck Henry, plus a hyperactive Bruce Willis starring as Dwayne Hoover, the ringleader of what goes on in Midland City.

Amazon Studios’ feature film “Crime 101” is rounding out its cast.
Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nick Nolte, Tate Donovan, Babak Tafti, Payman Maadi, Deborah Hedwall, Devon Bostick, Paul Adelstein, Drew Powell and Matthew Del Negro have boarded the upcoming crime thriller, which will be released in theaters.
They join previously announced cast members Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins and Halle Berry. Bart Layton wrote the script, which is based on a novella by Don Winslow, and will direct.
Per the logline, Winslow’s original story follows a series of high level jewelry thefts up and down the Pacific Coast Highway that have gone unsolved for years, mostly because the perpetrator has lived by a strict code he calls ‘Crime 101.’ Police attribute the thefts to the Colombian cartels, but Detective Lou Lubesnick’s gut says it’s the work of just one man. Alan Rudolph with Anne-Katrin Titze on Robert Altman considering Johnny Carson and Peter Falk to be cast as Dwayne Hoover (played by Bruce Willis) in Breakfast Of Champions: “He would cast his movies before they were written.”
In the first instalment with Alan Rudolph, we discuss Robert Altman’s early connection to Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast Of Champions, the roles played by Bruce Willis, Nick Nolte, Albert Finney, and Owen Wilson, plus working with Willis and Demi Moore on Mortal Thoughts. Now, with the help of Ron Mann, director of What We Like, producer David Blocker, cinematographer Elliot Davis and Shout Factory, there is a 4K Digital Restoration of Breakfast of Champions available to screen in cinemas, on streaming platforms and Blu-ray DVD for the 25th anniversary of this very prescient film. Alan Rudolph was an assistant director on Altman’s Nashville, California Split, The Long Goodbye, and appeared as himself in The Player.

25 years ago, writer/director Alan Rudolph realized a decades-long dream when he finally got to make his adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut‘s “Breakfast of Champions” with a cast that included Bruce Willis, Nick Nolte, Albert Finney, and Barbara Hershey, all operating at the peak of their talents. The tale of a smiling car dealership mogul (Willis) in the midst of a breakdown, “Breakfast” was one of Rudolph’s best films, a hilarious, prescient, and audacious portrait of not just a man, but a country losing its mind.
“Breakfast of Champions” was a deeply personal, fully realized work from one of the most interesting American filmmakers of his era. It was also a complete flop with audiences and critics.
“The film came out for two or three days and was radioactive,” Rudolph told IndieWire. “Breakfast” was so buried by the studio that released it that even its director couldn’t get...

If there's one thing Stephen King knows pretty well, it's villains. The prolific horror author has been writing basically nonstop since he released "Carrie," his debut novel, back in 1974, and his work has been endlessly adapted for both the big and small screen. In 2009, he even compiled a list of his favorite villains that he didn't create, and it's a pretty solid rundown — which certainly isn't surprising.
From literary icons to on-screen favorites to a villain with a confusingly familiar name — I'll clarify that whole thing when we arrive at that point — here are Stephen King's top ten villains of all time, whom he ranked for Entertainment Weekly at the close of the aughts. King ranked his top 10 from "least villainous" to "most villainous," apparently, so we've preserved that order here.

Child stardom might seem like the ultimate dream, but it can unfortunately be a challenging experience for young actors. Not only are there immense adult stresses related to the job, but child stars are often exposed to very adult things long before they should be, and abuse, unfortunately, occurs on sets and around them. Even if a child star manages to avoid abusive situations, they can struggle with fame and the unusual requirements of their jobs. For example, "Captain Marvel" star Brie Larson was originally hesitant to take on the mantle of a major Marvel hero because she was unsure of her identity as a separate thing from the many roles she had played throughout her childhood. No matter how much money a kid might be raking in, there are plenty of reasons for a child star to step away from a bright and shining career.

Fans cannot seem to forgive People Magazine for never awarding the title of Sexiest Man Alive to Henry Cavill. Since its inception in the 1980s, the title has been held by several handsome men in Hollywood. Cavill impressed fans with his looks and physique, especially since his portrayal of Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel.

Acting can be hard work, and the pressure is high when so much relies on the dynamic between the cast in a given stage, television, or film project. Between these working conditions and the larger-than-life personalities and egos that actors sometimes are notorious for, this can lead to personal conflicts behind-the-scenes. After a particularly toxic working relationship or private breakdown between actors, this occasionally results in actors refusing to work with each other again (Ryan Reynolds and Wesley Snipes were in that boat for awhile before "Deadpool & Wolverine" came around). In many instances, these feuds spill out into a war of words in the public eye, fueling that shared animosity.
Here are some notable instances of famous actors who refuse to work with each other again on any future projects. The causes of these professional ruptures range from squabbling between actors on set during a difficult project or comments...

In Seven Cemeteries, a recent parolee (Danny Trejo) gets a Mexican witch to resurrect his old posse so that they can help him save a woman's ranch from a ruthless drug lord.
The movie also stars Sal Lopez, Samantha Ashley, Efren Ramirez, Vincent M. Ward, Lew Temple, Richard Esteras, and Maria Canals-Barrera, and is every bit as delightfully bonkers as it sounds.
You don't need us to tell you that Trejo is an icon and his many credits include the likes of Con Air, Machete, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Breaking Bad, and Dusk till Dawn. Earlier this week, we had the good fortune to sit down with Danny to discuss his role as Bravo in this action-packed supernatural romp from filmmaker John Gulager.

Paul Mazursky's 1986 comedy "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" is a sharp indictment of ultra-moneyed yuppie culture, which was running rampant during the Reagan administration. Culturally speaking, the mid 1980s saw a redoubled effort to enrich the already-wealthy and encourage rich people to become obsessed with conspicuous consumption. Many, many films and TV shows about Beverly Hills were released at this time, delving deep into the cockroach nest where America's wealthy classes gathered and cannibalized each other.
Prominent among these was Mazursky's film about a rich family, the Whitemans, that recently became wealthy thanks to a wire hanger manufacturing empire. The family are all empty and unhappy. Matriarch Barbara (Bette Midler) is attempting to fill her emptiness with increasingly strange renditions of New Age spirituality, while patriarch Dave (Richard Dreyfuss) is filling his own emptiness by having an affair with the family's live-in maid, Carmen (Elizabeth Peña). If there's one thing we know about the alien known only as The Thing, it's that it can appear as just about any living being that it wants to. In that spirit, it's no big surprise that the role of R.J. MacReady, the resident helicopter pilot of Outpost 31, was one that could've gone to any number of actors when director John Carpenter was developing "The Thing" at Universal Pictures in the early '80s. On the other hand, this fact may come as a surprise to those who hadn't realized other actors were in the running for the part, given that the role eventually went to one of Carpenter's muses: Kurt Russell. The marriage of Russell, Carpenter, and MacReady seems so natural in hindsight that it's wild to think about anyone else playing the part.
Even more surprising is Carpenter's admission that Russell wasn't his first choice for MacReady. There...

Director Lynne Ramsay’s Die, My Love has added Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek to an already eye-catching cast, including Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattison and Lakeith Stanfield.
It’s been seven years since Lynne Ramsay (pictured) last made a feature, and as a filmmaker who;s never been what you might call prolific, we’re glad we won’t be waiting too much longer for her latest project to materialise. In 1997, Jennifer Lopez and Sean Penn starred in U-Turn, an Oliver Stone thriller. Lopez expressed her pride at working with an actor of Penn’s caliber and said they got along well on set. So well, in fact, that she might have pursued a romantic connection with him had they not been in other relationships.
Jennifer Lopez said she would have had a ‘thing’ with Sean Penn in a different universe
When Lopez filmed U-Turn, she was engaged to her first husband, Ojani Noa. Penn was married to his second wife, actor Robin Wright. Still, both actors felt chemistry between them. When asked which of her co-stars she would have had a “thing” with in a parallel universe, Lopez named Penn.

Steven Spielberg is no stranger to intense films, but there’s one project he found so brutal that he passed it off like a hot potato. Picture this: Spielberg was initially set to direct Schindler’s List but found himself tangled in a different script—a $182M Robert De Niro movie so violent, it made him think twice. Kino Lorber has acquired the North American rights to Paul Schrader’s Oh, Canada, which reteams Richard Gere with Schrader after their collaboration on American Gigolo.
Gere plays an American documentarian who relocated to Montreal as a Vietnam draft refugee and attempts to set the record straight in one final interview. The film, which portrays a man contemplating his legacy while facing the end of his life, co-stars Uma Thurman, Jacob Elordi, and Michael Imperioli and premiered in competition in Cannes.
“Oh, Canada is a stunning artistic achievement by the great Paul Schrader, a poignant, formally daring rumination on aging, memory, and mortality anchored by a commanding performance from Richard Gere,” said Kino Lorber head of theatrical acquisitions and distribution Lisa Schwartz in a statement.
Oh, Canada will screen at the Toronto Film Festival and the New York Film Festival ahead of Kino Lorber planning an awards season theatrical release this December.

This cheeky cameo caught us as off-guard as a rabbit in headlights and had us giggling with glee at Jackman’s seamless pivot from noble King Arthur to our beloved adamantium-clawed mutant. But wait, was this the best cameo to ever grace the big screen? Well, sure, many would argue that it could even give Tom Cruise’s riotous turn as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder a run for its money!

Bleecker Street’s new comedy “The Fabulous Four” finds Bette Midler doing what she does best: broad comedy with a touch of poignancy peeking out from just beneath the surface.
It’s a quality that characterizes many of Midler’s most memorable performances in films like “The First Wives Club,” “Down and Out in Beverly Hills,” and “That Old Feeling,” and according to Midler, it’s been part of her approach since the beginning.
“When I worked live, starting from the time I was 19, I was very much aware of the melancholy underneath certain kinds of scenes,” Midler told IndieWire in a recent interview. “There’s a musical term for it: contrapuntal. ‘Miss M’ is loud and boisterous on the outside, but there’s an undercurrent of despair because it’s very hard to be a human being.”
