Story of a former champ looking for redemption is shot through with cliches but it’s very well acted, particularly one indelible scene with Joe Pesci
Jack Huston’s directing debut is a big-hearted, decently intended piece of work; it is well acted, less well written, an old-fashioned boxing movie, classically attired in monochrome, and set in New York in 1989 but behaving as if VJ Day hasn’t happened yet. The title is an apparent nod to the one Stanley Kubrick chose for his own debut, a documentary short about a boxer’s jittery, aimless mood before that evening’s fight with nothing to do but wait.
There are a lot of cliches on show here, with some exasperatingly on-the-nose dialogue scenes, and important dramatic moments being revealed by rote in memory flashbacks. This is damaged middleweight ex-champ Mikey Flannigan, played by Michael Pitt, troubled by his terrible sins, preparing...

After turning to The Greatest Showman filmmaker Michael Gracey to helm its live-action remake of Tangled, it seems Disney is now exploring several exciting options when it comes to the movie's cast.
In recent weeks, Thunderbolts* star Florence Pugh has emerged as the supposed frontrunner to take on the role of Rapunzel. Agatha Hahn, Jennifer Lopez, and Demi Moore have all been named as possibilities for Mother Gothel, and another wild casting rumour has just hit social media.
According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH (via Toonado.com), 14-time Grammy Award winner Taylor Swift is being eyed for the lead role of Rapunzel. That doesn't mean she's in talks for the movie or even interested but the singer is someone the House of Mouse is interested in.

Director Uwe Boll has a reputation as one of the worst film directors of all time. In the mid-2000s, he helmed a string of well-publicized but critically savaged video game adaptations that immediately sunk to the bottom of cineastes' estimations. In 2003, he made "House of the Dead," and followed that in 2005 with both "Alone in the Dark" and "BloodRayne." He chased those with "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale," "BloodRayne 2: Deliverance," and "Postal" all in 2007, and capped off his run in 2008 with "Far Cry." Fans of the games on which those films are based were incensed that Boll should so clumsily handle the source material, and fans of the cinematic medium were incensed that
Despite his critical reputation, Boll has remained prolific, sometimes helming multiple pictures a year. He directed "First Shift" and "Bandidos" in 2024, and is set to release "Run" in 2025.

As the creator of Hellboy and artist of the half-demon hero's many adventures into darkness, Mike Mignola is comics' foremost expert on monsters. Hellboy is an agent of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) and has vanquished every type of monster under the full moon, from vampires to werewolves to dragons to his demonic kin. "Hellboy" comics range from simple short stories to pulp epics as good as any blockbuster movie; you don't get the modern reinvention of "Creature Commandos" without the B.P.R.D.
But what is Mignola's own favorite monster movie? Despite also being the creator of Hellboy's amphibian sidekick Abe Sapien, it's not "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" and its underwater horror Gill-man.
It's James Whale's "Bride of Frankenstein" and Mignola isn't alone; "Bride" often ranks as the best...

The members of the title motorcycle club in Sons of Anarchy aren’t exactly the most morally correct people, though many of them changed for the better, as is the case of Tig (Kim Coates), but he still shares an unfortunate yet fitting record with Jax (Charlie Hunnam). In 2008, Kurt Sutter took the audience to the fictional town of Charming, California, to meet the Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club (also known as Samcro), led by President Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) and VP Jax Teller. Throughout eight seasons, Samcro confronts various enemies, including some within the club.
Throughout his time as VP and President, Jax is accompanied by the club’s most loyal members, who follow him through many highs and lows. Among them is Tig Trager, Samcro’s Sergeant-at-Arms during Clay’s Presidency and thus his right hand, who at the end of Sons of Anarchy becomes the club’s VP.

James Gunn’s Dcu is officially underway and it is high time a few casting choices are made for some key characters in the universe. The filmmaker and co-chief of DC Studios has maintained that no greenlight will be given for a project unless it has a solid script and seems to be giving time to set up solo films. However, all of them need to lead up to a huge villain.
Josh Brolin, who played Thanos in the MCU, recently shared a fanart of himself in the design of Darkseid. This fueled the rumors that Brolin was still in talks with Gunn after he refused the offer to play Hal Jordan a.k.a Green Lantern in the Dcu. While casting Brolin as Darkseid, who is basically DC’s Thanos is not a good choice, there are other actors who fit the bill.

Every state has its own histories, landscapes, and stories worth telling, but some lend themselves to more visually stimulating tales than others. There are bland-looking states that shall remain unnamed, and then there are ones that feel intriguing and inviting no matter which way the camera's pointed. Hawaii is an obvious pick on that count, but Alaska gives it a real run for the top spot. It is an endlessly stunning place to be with natural beauty staring you down from every direction. That beauty can come at a cost, though, as nature can be both unrelenting and unforgiving.
That reality, when coupled with the vast size of the state and a sparse population, leaves it ripe for drama, danger, and stories about isolation both intentional and otherwise. It's a place where a detective can be driven mad by the lack of night ("Insomnia"), a humorously inappropriate romance can take...

Guillermo del Toro’s films have a lot of geeky goodness in them, not just from a filmmaking point of view, but from how he employs CGI and holds his inspiration close. This is best depicted in his work in Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

This weekend, Apple TV+ is free.
It’s a brilliant marketing move and reminds us of the time when, back when Disney Channel was a premium cable channel, they would do special free weekends, complete with cutaways to a fake call center to see people signing up in real time.
And while there might not be hosted segments previewing the channel’s upcoming programs, you have free reign over all of Apple TV+ – including their original film library.
To that end, we chose nine movies that you should definitely check out during the free preview weekend, everything from documentaries about the Beastie Boys to new classics from Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott to a movie about the formation of “Tetris” (yes really).
Apple “Beastie Boys Story”
Apple TV+ has a robust lineup of music documentaries, with Todd Haynes’ “The Velvet Underground,” plus docs dedicated to Billie Eilish, Bruce Springsteen, Louis Armstrong and Selena Gomez.

Guillermo del Toro has a very interesting and respectable filmography, but there are a slew of films that the director never got to make. Be it Pacific Rim or Hellboy, del Toro has been able to deliver a very nuanced take on war, and violence, but there was one film that he never got to make, that could have possibly been pretty violent.
Blade II || Credit: New Line
While del Toro directed Blade II, the director abandoned a very interesting project that might have been a box office hit. The director is known for his interest in the supernatural, fantasy, and even science fiction, which takes inspiration from anime and other modern media. Guillermo del Toro could have directed a very interesting film, based on a famous novel, had not decided to deal with Marvel instead.

The best cartoon girl duos have ensured that generations of young women fell in love with animation as a medium. What’s more, pairings of female characters also account for some of the most iconic presences in cartoons and animation of all time. While male duos and boy-girl teams in cartoons are common, the world of animation is surprisingly light on pairs of female characters. Girls in cartoons tend to come in trios, groups, or on their own. However, this only ensures that the very best cartoon girl duos stand out.
Whether it’s classic characters from shows like The Flintstones or Scooby-Doo or pairs of heroines from animated movies from powerhouses like Disney or Pixar, each of the best cartoon girl duos brings something unique. They share a range of dynamics, with some being best friends, others sisters, with mother-daughter duos also being present too (and even some granddaughter-grandmother...

A couple of weeks ago, it was announced Adam Scott (Severance) and Danielle Deadwyler (The Harder They Fall) have the lead roles in the darkly comedic thriller The Saviors, which is currently filming in Los Angeles. Kevin Hamedani, who previously directed Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction and Junk, is directing the film from a script he co-wrote with Travis Betz. Deadline reports that the supporting cast includes Greg Kinnear (You Gotta Believe), Kate Berlant (Would It Kill You to Laugh), Nazanin Boniadi (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), Ron Perlman (The Instigators), and Colleen Camp (Amsterdam).

It’s not an easy feat to craft a completely original sci-fi story. The genre has been around for years, after all, arguably since British author Mary Shelley published Frankenstein back in 1818. A lot of great sci-fi movies, books, and TV shows that have come out since then have left their mark, so much so that their echoes can be found in every corner of this particular genre still to this day.
Still, the fact that a sci-fi TV show or movie isn’t exactly as original as it could be doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not high quality, or that it doesn’t have anything to add to the larger sci-fi scene. There have been plenty of great stories that have taken their inspiration from pre-existing properties and added their own twist to it, amassing accolades and dedicated fans in the process.

While the Twilight novels garnered lukewarm reviews among critics, this did little to hinder its sale, given its immense popularity among young adults. The IP’s mainstream appeal further escalated after the live-action adaptations, which, for better or worse, cemented Robert Pattinson as one of the most polarizing figures in Hollywood at the time.

Is DC Studios’ Clayface The New Batman Villain To Take Center Stage? (Photo Credit – Twitter/Facebook)
Clayface, the iconic Batman villain, is finally getting a new movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios is aiming to release the film on September 11, 2026. While a director hasn’t been locked in yet, Mike Flanagan is said to have written the script. The project has some heavy hitters behind it, with James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-CEOs of DC Studios, serving as producers alongside Matt Reeves (the genius behind The Batman 2022) and Lynn Harris.
As of now, there’s no word on the plot of the Clayface movie, and DC Studios hasn’t clarified whether it’ll be part of the Dcu or fall under the DC Elseworlds banner. So, there’s still a lot of mystery surrounding this project.

If you haven’t heard, Clayface is getting his very own Dcu adaptation! This came as quite a shock to me. The rumors that have been circulating surrounding Clayface all seemed unlikely to me, but you never know what rumor is going to end up being confirmed nowadays. We now know, without a doubt, that Clayface is entering the Dcu as James Gunn himself has confirmed it. We even have a release year: 2026. So, who is playing Clayface?
Alan Tudyk
Who will be playing Clayface is currently unknown, but the first person that comes to mind is Alan Tudyk. Tudyk is already going to be voicing Clayface in an upcoming episode of Creature Commandos, and Gunn has said that voice actors will play their characters in both live action and animation. However, he seemed to at least partially double back on this and say it isn’t guaranteed for minor roles.

Officially confirmed earlier this week, Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, Doctor Sleep) is writing a Clayface movie for DC, and it now has a release date.
Warner Bros. will release DC’s live action Clayface movie on September 11, 2026.
At this time, the project doesn’t yet have a director. Stay tuned for updates.
No plot details for the Mike Flanagan-written Clayface movie have been announced but Flanagan tweeted back in 2021 that his dream Clayface movie was a “horror/thriller/tragedy.” Whether or not that ended up being the tone of the final product remains to be seen.
The Clayface character was introduced by DC Comics in Detective Comics #40 way back in June 1940, an adversary of Batman with a clay-like form and shapeshifting abilities. The character has been played on screen in both animation and live action, with actors including Alan Tudyk, Ron Perlman, Brian McManamon, and...

The studio has set the feature, with a script from Mike Flanagan, for a theatrical release on Sept. 11, 2026. A director has not yet been announced.
Matt Reeves (director of 2022’s The Batman) and Lynn Harris serve as producers for Clayface, with the movie centering on the DC Comics character that originated as a Batman villain in 1940. Clayface is known for consisting of clay and having the ability to shape-shift. DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran also produce.
Additionally, director Arthur Mintz’s original animated movie Dynamic Duo from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation has been set for theatrical release on June 30, 2028. Matthew Aldrich penned the screenplay for the project that counts Reeves, Harris and Theresa Andersson as producers.

There were rumors a few years back that Mike Flanagan had pitched a solo movie for the DC villain Clayface, rumors that Flanagan said at the time were “entirely speculative.” Over a year later, Variety ran a report this week confirming that the Flanagan-scripted Clayface movie is happening!
Variety reports, “DC Studios has officially greenlit a feature film centered around Clayface, the shapeshifting Batman villain, from a script written by Doctor Sleep filmmaker Mike Flanagan, according to a source with direct knowledge of the production.”
“Filming is expected to begin early next year,” the site’s report continues.
Matt Reeves (The Batman) and Lynn Harris will produce through 6th & Idaho Productions. And as a reminder, James Gunn and Peter Safran are now the heads of DC Studios.

Variety is reporting that a Clayface movie is officially moving forward at DC Studios, with Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep; The Fall of the House of Usher; Midnight Mass) attached to write the screenplay.
Flanagan and Trevor Macy, his partner at Intrepid Pictures, pitched the potential film to James Gunn and Peter Safran over a year ago, and it looks like the idea won over the new DC bosses as they've issued a formal greenlight.
Plot details remain under wraps, but what we do know is that Clayface won't be a villain in the feature, which makes sense considering that back in 2021, Flanagan, when asked which DC movie he'd like to make, said, "Well I've wanted to do a Superman movie since I was a kid, but I would also be really keen to do a standalone Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy."
Filming is tentatively scheduled to begin early next year,...

Fresh off the success of the HBO series “The Penguin,” DC Studios has officially greenlit a feature film centered around Clayface, the shapeshifting Batman villain, from a script written by “Doctor Sleep” filmmaker Mike Flanagan, according to a source with direct knowledge of the production. Plot details are scarce, but filming is expected to begin early next year.
Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris will produce through their company 6th & Idaho Productions.
Update (12/13/24): Warner Bros. has dated the film for Sept. 11, 2026.
Flanagan, who first pitched DC Studios on a Clayface project in 2023, tweeted in 2021 that he was “really keen to do a standalone Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy.” But he is already committed to write and direct a new take on “The Exorcist” for Universal, through Blumhouse and Morgan Creek, and he’s also developing a series adaptation of Stephen King’s novel “Carrie” for Amazon MGM Studios.

Boxing movies stand apart from other sports dramas for the sheer energy and underdog spirit they bring to the screen. From Rocky to Raging Bull, the legacy of movies about the sweet science has fascinated viewers for decades. In 1951, young director Stanley Kubrick directed a short documentary titled Day of the Fight, which followed middleweight boxer Walter Cartier as he prepared for a match-up at Madison Square Garden in New York. Actor Jack Huston was fascinated by that film and wrote a film using the same title but chronicling a much different lead-up to a prize fight.
Day of the Fight follows Mike Flannigan (Michael Pitt), a former champion boxer who spent years in prison after an accident claimed the life of a child. Given a chance to redeem himself in the ring, Irish Mike travels around New York City to make amends with people from his past while also...

Prior to the Kelvin universe created by J.J. Abrams in 2009, the "Star Trek" movies were said to operate on an odds-bad, evens-good schedule. Any movie with an odd number in its title (including "Star Trek: The Motion Picture") would invariably disappoint, while those with an even number would be worthy of the franchise's good name. Aside from being way too hard on the cinematic "The Motion Picture", this rule of thumb generally held true through ten films.
Generally.
In 2002, armed with a screenplay from "Gladiator" co-writer John Logan and a fiery villain played by pre-stardom Tom Hardy, "Star Trek: Nemesis" appeared poised, as the tenth film in the franchise, to course correct after the silly, weightless, and cheap-looking "Star Trek: Insurrection." It was to be a "Star Trek" film of consequence, with real danger posed to its core characters and a big adventure built for the big screen. Technically, it was all of these things.

Although it is more common for movie stars to voice act in animated films, there are several animated TV shows that feature A-list actors among their cast. These shows can include Western cartoons, but also anime as well. In fact, some of the best anime series of all time have incredible voice acting performances and include talented actors among their casts.
Some cartoons are known for their funny characters, creating memorable stories that are meant to make people laugh. Other cartoons are based on violent movies, somehow transforming their narratives into something suitable for children to watch. Regardless, the addition of popular actors to any project brings a certain amount of notoriety to any project, animated or live-action.

“Irish” Mike Flannigan, a once-revered champion, awakens to the spectre of his past in the low light of a New York dawn. The day unfolds like a fragile tapestry, laced with hope and regret as he prepares for a return fight at Madison Square Garden.
This site looms large in his psyche, serving as a stage for redemption and a potential graveyard for aspirations. Each moment is imbued with existential weight as if the air he breathes is laden with the ghosts of his choices.
Mike takes poignant stops as he navigates the landscape of his day, recalling the echoes of his past splendour. At the gym, the rhythmic thud of fists against leather serves as a metronome for his troubled heart, while the shipyard reminds him of his hard life.

Amazon’s acclaimed rookie drama series Mr. & Mrs. Smith is poised to make SAG Awards history.
Only two TV shows have ever received a best ensemble — comedy or drama — SAG Award nomination after entering a cast comprised of just two people: comedy Key & Peele in 2016 and drama The Last of Us earlier this year. Mr. & Mrs. Smith could be the third, given that only its John and Jane — as in, Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, whose characters are at the heart of the series — are eligible for inclusion in its submission, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
That’s because its supporting and guest cast members — among them notables such as Alexander Skarsgård, Eiza González, Paul Dano, John Turturro, Sharon Horgan, Sarah Paulson, Parker Posey, Wagner Moura, Ron Perlman and Michaela Coel, as well as the show’s leading man’s mother, Beverly Glover — do not appear in...

Guillermo del Toro remains one of the most visionary filmmakers working in Hollywood. He remains best known to many audiences for his two Hellboy movies starring Ron Perlman, as well as 2013's Pacific Rim, but his filmography extends far beyond these blockbusters into a wide variety of genres and tones. His most recent film, for example, is Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, which was told entirely using stop-motion animation.
This 2022 Pinocchio adaptation took home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, but it's far from the first del Toro movie to strike a chord with critics and awards bodies. After Blade II (2002) and Hellboy (2004), del Toro directed Pan's Labyrinth (2006), which earned him a Best Original Screenplay nomination. His next showing at the Oscars was in 2017 with The Shape of Water, which won Best Picture and Best Director, in addition to a Best Original Screenplay nomination. Another del Toro movie, however, also earned an impressive Oscars nomination,...

Two years ago, the black & white version of Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-nominated Nightmare Alley debuted on Hulu after its theatrical run. Today, the filmmaker revealed on Bluesky that not only is he hard at work on a Nightmare Alley remaster of this version, but it’ll be an extended cut.
“I am remastering the B&w Nightmare Alley w an extended cut. Stay tuned,” Del Toro shared on the social media app.
“Although we shot Nightmare Alley in color, we lit it as if it were black and white,” said del Toro previously of his dubbed Nightmare Alley: A Vision in Darkness & Light. “You can see exactly the same level of design, and we wanted to give viewers this special vantage as a take of the classic noir genre that the film is part of.”
Director of Photography Dan Laustsen had explained, “When we designed and shot, we were always...

Bradley Cooper's career has evolved in recent years, but his roots are still in acting. In 2018, he made his directorial debut with a remake of A Star Is Born. His sophomoric feature came last year in the form of the Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro, in which he also played the conductor protagonist. For many years before he took a behind-the-scenes role, however, Cooper has been known for his acting. He got his first Oscar nomination for Silver Linings Playbook in 2013, which was then followed by two consecutive years of nominations, for American Hustle and American Sniper.
As his acting career continued, Cooper became more holistically involved in his projects. This involved not only directing A Star is Born and Maestro, but also taking on a producer role in several projects. He was an executive producer on both Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, and then went on to produce American Sniper.

Whether they're satirical, romantic, or grimly resigned, these apocalyptic movies don't pull any punches when it comes to the end of the world. The post-apocalyptic genre has been gaining popularity in both film and television in recent years, but the best movies about the end of the world are from all eras of cinema. Many narratives touch upon the search for solutions to the coming catastrophes and the search for new worlds. While it's nice to watch a film about the end of the world that ends on an uplifting note, some movies opt for a melancholic tone.
There are plenty of fun post-apocalyptic sci-fi movies, but just as many stories grapple with the lead-up to the final days, finding some way of avoiding the apocalypse. However, there's something satisfying about a movie that pushes its characters and the audience to face the reality that everything must eventually come to an end.
