After news back in November of developer Nullpointer Games teaming up with Outersloth for The Horror at Highrook, they’ve today released the game’s Next Fest demo ahead of the title’s participation in Steam Next Fest later this month.
The Next Fest demo introduces players to the game’s “deviously clever systems” that lie at the dark heart of The Horror at Highrook, while slowly enveloping them with its enigmatic narrative.
Inspired by Hp Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe and Bram Stoker, The Horror at Highrook sees players lead a team of occult investigators into the dark maw of Highrook Manor in search of the Ackerons – a noble family, who following rumours of dark pacts and shadowy rituals, have now vanished without a trace.
As players explore the haunted estate grounds, they will summon dark entities and craft powerful protections in a bid to uncover the fate of the missing family,...

Festival fans can prepare for an unforgettable four-day experience as the Romford Horror Festival returns with a bigger, bolder, and bloodier line-up than ever before. Running from February 27th to March 2nd, the festival will take over the soon-to-be-open Lumiere at the Mercury Shopping Centre, setting the stage for its highly anticipated official launch at the end of March. This year’s event marks a major expansion, with 240 feature films and shorts screening across seven screens, offering a deep dive into both mainstream and independent horror.
Festival Director Spencer Hawken sees this edition as a milestone, not only for the festival itself but also as a crucial test for the new cinema. “This is a fantastic opportunity to test the venue with a live audience, and horror fans are the perfect guinea pigs,” he said. “They’re passionate, knowledgeable, and incredibly understanding if there are any technical hiccups. You want to get away for a bit, right? Life has got you down and you need to escape. What better way than to have some excellent Netflix limited series take your mind off things?
That is the entire point of streaming services. We want to be entertained and we don't want to think about ourselves. Unless, of course, the show we are watching is about us. That would be cool. And yeah, weird.
Thankfully, Netflix has a lot to offer. Doesn't it always? Heck, even those who believe the streaming giant has too many "foreign language" projects, there is good stuff to watch. And don't pretend you watch the dubbed version of Squid Game.

Once again, history has vindicated the greatest workplace visionary that television has ever seen — though we’ve thankfully evolved past the need for bomb threats.
Throughout human civilization, the greatest tragedy of the genius has always been his curse to never receive proper appreciation in his time. Vincent van Gogh’s works wouldn’t be considered masterpieces until after his passing. Edgar Allen Poe only became one of literature’s brightest (or darkest) stars post-mortem. And George Costanza, the equivalent of the aforementioned virtuosos in the field of navigating the modern, white-collar office job, wouldn’t see his theories proven correct until decades after the controversial Seinfeld finale.
This week, the Associated Press published its report on a new trend in workplace productivity, interviewing Costanza-converts who take naps during work hours and suggesting that the data could support a sleep-heavy work day. Just remember to set your alarm clocks,...

There was some potential news on the release date of the final season of Stranger Things this week, and it is still going to be a bit. Viewers might need to wait until October or November to see what happens, but that at least gives us plenty of time to catch up on other shows. If you need your horror fix then Netflix has a lot of options.
February might also be a good month to watch something scary. Sure, maybe many of the films on the Hallmark Channel dedicated to Valentine's Day might also be a bit frightening because of the acting or script, but that is all unintentional. We want our horror to also be high-quality watching.
You might have even seen the shows below before. Still, you can only watch the first four seasons of Stranger Things so many times before you get burned out and do not want to see more.

With gay rights coming back into the crosshairs in almost every country across the globe, Carmen Emmi’s slow-burn drama is sobering reminder of just how far these things have progressed in the past 30 years. Taking place primarily in 1997 — unfolding in flashback from the framing device of a family New Year’s Eve party being held a few years later — it takes a little while to find its feet. Once the main players are established, though, and experimental flashes of harsh analog video become a more recognizable manifestation of its ugly-beautiful aesthetic, Plainclothes builds to a very satisfying conclusion, putting a torrid but meaningful gay love affair at the center of a universal coming-of-age story.
Edgar Allen Poe’s short story The Tell-Tale Heart is an unlikely reference point, not because Plainclothes is a genre film — though it shares a tiny bit of DNA with William Friedkin’s much more...

Here’s How Sydney Sweeney Feels About Not Going For Breast Reduction Surgery (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Sydney Sweeney hit us with some unexpected teenage tea. Back in high school, the Euphoria star wasn’t feeling her curves—specifically, her chest. She even had a whole plan to shrink them as soon as she turned 18. Yeah, she was that serious about it.
But then came the ultimate mum intervention. According to Lad Bible, the actress’ mom straight-up told her, “Don’t do it. You’ll regret it in college.” And guess what? She nailed it. Looking back, Sydney couldn’t agree more. “I’m so glad I didn’t,” she said during an interview with Glamour in 2023. “I like them. They’re my best friends.”
But it wasn’t always smooth sailing. Teenage Sydney Sweeney wasn’t vibing with her body. “I went through that process of covering my body up at such a young age,...

In “The Thing with Feathers,” Benedict Cumberbatch plays a London creator of graphic novels who, quite suddenly, finds himself a widower (his beloved wife collapsed on the kitchen floor and died). In an early scene, we see him try and sustain an atmosphere of everyday normality as he puts breakfast together for his two young sons. But it’s not happening. He feels like he’s juggling four tasks at once; he burns the toast and then frantically tries to scrape off the charred part (a mistake).
The character, who is never named (he’s referred to in the credits as “Dad”), has already shown the depths of his grief, sitting on the couch after the funeral, his tears slowly gushing forth. When Benedict Cumberbatch enacts a moment like this, you can bet that you’re not just seeing an actor cry; you’re seeing him act with every tear.

The work of Edgar Allan Poe has been adapted for the big and small screen numerous times over the years, with several of the legendary writer's stories influencing Mike Flanagan's recent retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher.
The acclaimed Netflix miniseries put its own unique spin on The Masque of the Red Death, and we're now hearing that a feature adaptation is in the works. Deadline reports that A24 and Picturehouse are developing the project, with Charlie Polinger set to write and direct.
This take on the short story is described as "wildly revisionist and darkly comedic." Sydney Sweeney is in talks to play the lead role. No details on her character were disclosed, but we assume it'll be a gender-switched take on Prince Prospero.

Charlie Polinger will write and direct a ‘darkly comedic’ spin on The Masque Of The Red Death, with Sydney Sweeney set to star.
A24’s The Masque Of The Red Death is set to go before cameras at some point this year and according to Deadline, Sydney Sweeney is top of the studio’s list to headline the project. It’ll be the feature debut of Charlie Polinger, a New York filmmaker and theatre director.
Based on a dark short story from Edgar Allen Poe, The Masque Of The Red Death centres on a group of privileged nobles who lock themselves away for endless revelry while a plague decimates the outside world. Given Poe’s gothic horror style, you can imagine that not everything goes to plan for the wealthy partygoers.

Sydney Sweeney is booked and busy, and it looks like she's about to be even busier, as she’s reportedly in talks to star in The Masque of the Red Death, a collaboration between Picturestart and A24.
This announcement follows the recent news that the two-time Emmy-nominated actress will star in Lionsgate's upcoming film adaptation of The Housemaid. She is joined by Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, and Michele Morrone in this project, which is slated for a Christmas Day 2025 release. Other upcoming projects of hers include Euphoria season 3, which is set to start filming this month, a thriller titled Echo Valley and an untitled Christy Martin movie. Now, if she joins the cast of The Masque of the Red Death, we'll have more content to look forward to from the talented actress.

After bringing romantic comedies back to form with 2023’s Anyone But You, Sydney Sweeney is in talks to star in a different kind of comedy for an adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death. Sweeney is negotiating to star in the feature-length project at A24 and Picturestart, based on the short story by the timeless teller of spooky stories, Edgar Allen Poe. Charlie Polinger is directing, writing, and executive producing the “darkly comedic” take on The Masque of the Red Death, with Lucy McKendrick also serving as an executive producer.

‘The Masque of the Red Death’ is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe about a prince named Prospero who tries to avoid a deadly plague called the Red Death. He throws a fancy, masked party in his castle, locking himself and his wealthy guests inside to stay safe. However, the Red Death finds its way in, showing that no one can escape death.
Sweeney herself already starred in a horror movie relatively recently, ‘Immaculate’ which received mixed reviews. Critics praised Sydney Sweeney’s performance, but opinions on the film’s execution were divided, with some appreciating its bold themes and others finding it uneven.

Exclusive: A24 and Picturestart are teaming on The Masque of the Red Death, a wildly revisionist and darkly comedic take on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe, and are in negotiations with Sydney Sweeney to star. Charlie Polinger is writing and directing, with A24 handling domestic distribution. Polinger will also executive produce alongside Lucy McKendrick.
The original Poe short story follows a prince who attempts to avoid a dangerous plague, known as the Red Death, by hiding in his abbey. Details behind this new take are being kept under wraps. Sources say the film will shoot this year.
Sweeney, the Euphoria and White Lotus star, had herself a busy 2024 that included the hit rom-com Anyone But You and the Neon horror thriller Immaculate. She also had the HBO pic Reality, which earned her a Critics Choice Award. She is currently filming the Lionsgate adaptation of the novel The Housemaid.

Directed by legendary writer Brian Clemens this macabre vampire yarn is marked by the Edgar Allan Poe template but has a charm and humour all of its own
The sword fighting vampire genre never really took off, but it wasn’t for the want of trying by this very enjoyable Hammer horror from 1974, a macabre swashbuckler written and directed by British genre legend Brian Clemens; his sole feature directing credit in fact. Clemens was a prolific writer who did so much to get TV audiences addicted to The Avengers, The Persuaders and The Professionals and it surely must have occurred to him that this trio of vampire-hunting leads could well have been spun off into a recurring TV series, perhaps under the aegis of Lew Grade.
German star and international co-production veteran Horst Janson plays Captain Kronos (dubbed by British actor Julian Holloway), a blond ex-army officer in a hilarious panto military outfit,...

Directed by a quartet of filmmakers – Akio Jissoji, Atsushi Kaneko, Hisayasu Sato, and Suguru Takeuchi – each segment of the film delves into the macabre, surreal, and psychological depths of Rampo’s unsettling world.
The film’s strongest suit is undoubtedly its visual style. Every segment is meticulously crafted, offering a unique aesthetic that ranges from gothic elegance to nightmarish surrealism. Japanese author Hirai Tarô took his pen name, Edogawa Rampo, as an homage to the American writer Edgar Allan Poe. Like his idol, he produced numerous stories that incorporated mystery and horror elements in various admixtures, and exhibited a similar fascination with mental abnormalities and (perhaps more so in Rampo’s case) sexual perversities. The term that came to be associated with Rampo’s work starting in the late 1920s was “erotic grotesque nonsense,” delineating a sensibility that outrageously mixed together sex, violence, and a dark sense of humor in ways that bring to mind the surrealist movement percolating to a boil in Paris at around the same time.

Alain Delon, the legendary French actor, was a central figure in the French golden age of cinema during the 1960s and 70s. Known for his suave, tough-guy persona and striking good looks, Leon appeared in more than 100 movies in his five-decade career. What made Delon so memorable was the unpredictable nature of his performances. From the ruthless assassin he played in Le Samouraï, to the charismatic criminal in Borsalino, Delon especially shone when he showed his seductive side in L'Eclisse and La Piscine. Hiss filmography even includes iconic literary characters, such as Zorro and Tom Ripley.
Delon passed away on August 18th, 2024, at the age of 88. Since then, film scholars, journalists, and fans have reflected on his remarkable body of work and the legacy his powerful performances have left in cinema history. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors of his generation and the rare international star to achieve global acclaim.

Mark Hamill was and remains best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy. He would reprise the role for the three Disney sequels from 2015 to 2019, but he's also played a de-aged Luke in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. Outside of his time spent in a galaxy far, far away, however, Hamill has taken on a variety of roles big and small, across many genres.
In addition to Luke, Hamill is widely associated with the role of the Joker, a character he has voiced in various animated DC Comics projects and video games, including Batman: The Killing Joke (2016). Voice acting work, in general, remains a major part of Hamill's acting career, but he also continues to appear in front of the camera. While The Simpsons season 36’s two Treehouse of Horror specials both had their respective high points, the outings also provided a helpful blueprint for the series going forward. The Simpsons season 37’s renewal hasn’t been announced yet, but the show is faring well among reviewers. After hitting its critical nadir in season 32, The Simpsons improved its critical standing with seasons 34 and 35. Although the Simpsons never age, the show’s writing seemed to receive an injection of life and creativity during these recent outings. This renewed vitality extended into season 36’s first episodes.

While Gilmore Girls had its dramatic moments, the dramedy also had some truly laugh-out-loud funny episodes in its original run. The cast of Gilmore Girls were perpetually falling in and out of love, so, although the show maintained a fairly low-key tone throughout, there was never any lack of drama. Admittedly, the series was hardly a soap opera, and it is no surprise that actor Milo Ventimiglia’s suggestion that his character should be brutally killed off was ignored by the showrunners. However, whether it was Luke’s secret daughter or Rory’s choice of college, there was plenty of conflict in Stars Hollow.

"The Simpsons" is one of the best TV shows of all time, and certainly one of the most popular and influential. With hundreds of episodes across 35 years, the show has covered countless stories, visited many different countries, and touched on just about every major holiday. Indeed, holidays are integral to the history of "The Simpsons," as the show's very first episode was a Christmas special (replacing the original idea for the pilot), and since then there have been many more Christmas-related episodes.
Of course, the holiday most closely related to "The Simpsons" in terms of episodes is Halloween, as we've had a horror episode every year since the show's second season (and some years even more than one) with various degrees of success. But for as many Treehouse of Horror episodes as there are, the opposite is true for Thanksgiving episodes of "The Simpsons," with most just barely touching on the holiday,...

Back in 2020, the comic book arm of Legendary Entertainment brought the world a graphic novel called Bram Stoker’s Dracula Starring Bela Lugosi, which was exactly what the title promised – an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula that featured the likeness of genre icon Bela Lugosi, who played the title character in the classic 1931 film (not to mention more than 260 stage performances and 1948’s Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein), as Dracula. Now, Legendary has teamed up with Sara Karloff of Karloff Enterprises, as well as Kerry Gammill and El Garing, the team behind Bram Stoker’s Dracula Starring Bela Lugosi to bring us Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein Starring Boris Karloff, which features a new design for Frankenstein’s monster, but the creature has the face of genre icon Boris Karloff. Karloff, of course, played Frankenstein’s monster in 1931’s Frankenstein and reprised the role for Bride of Frankenstein in...

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for The Simpsons season 36, episode 6, Women in Shorts
While The Simpsons season 36, episode 6, was technically a sequel to a classic Golden Age outing, its original premise ensured that the episode felt like more than a mere retread. It is tough for The Simpsons to keep coming up with fresh ideas. The show has been on the air since 1989 and has aired over 750 episodes, so, although The Simpsons season 37 renewal has not yet been confirmed, it is no surprise the show is working hard on creating new stories. After all, its been two decades since South Park famously complained The Simpsons did it.

The folks behind The Simpsons seem to be betting that interest in “Treehouse of Horror” episodes will only rise in the weeks following Halloween, not unlike pumpkin stocks.
That’s because the next episode of the show, which doesn’t air until November 24th, is titled “Treehouse of Horror Presents: Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes.” This is only the second time that The Simpsons has used their annual Halloween show’s branding for other episodes, following 2022’s “Treehouse of Horror Presents: Not It.”
But “Not It” still aired during the height of the spooky season, just one week before Halloween. “Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes,” on the other hand, is airing weeks after everybody’s already finished eating their discounted candy and most Spirit Halloween locations have converted back into raccoon-infested abandoned box stores.

Gothic books and short stories are an important part of literary history, and several are defining titles in the genre. The term is often vague, but at its core, gothic stories spark fear in a reader. However, this doesnt necessarily mean horror, either. A lot of terrifying books that arent classified as horror come under gothic because of their haunting themes.
Gothic narratives can be identified in several ways. For example, being set in an eerie and cold location like a castle, presenting a supernatural or paranormal threat, or delving into the inner workings of a characters psyche. Many of these classic books and short stories have inspired the best gothic horror movies and TV shows, too, although the original literature will forever be stand-outs.

While The Simpsons season 36s Treehouse of Horror special wasnt perfect, the episode did bring back a welcome trope from earlier Halloween outings. The Simpsons have produced 38 Treehouse of Horror Halloween specials and these have varied in quality over the decades. One of the most celebrated names associated with the genre, the late, great Bla Lugosi is regarded as horror royalty to this day. Starring in some of the most revered cinematic offerings that the golden age of horror had to offer and renowned for his frequent collaboration with fellow horror icon Boris Karloff, the Hungarian-American actor announced his arrival on the scene in Hollywood during the 1930s with Tod Browning's Dracula - a legendary role that he is now virtually synonymous with - and never looked back.
While he often lamented the fact that he was forever typecast as a villain courtesy of his thick accent and imposing physical appearance, Lugosi embraced this status quo by breathing life into an array of the genre's most enduring dastardly characters. While many of his films were decidedly not perfect, the actor provided the foundations for many of horror's most archetypal character molds,...

Due out this February from Dstlry, Through Red Windows sees Ram V teaming up with artist Joëlle Jones to tell a modern horror story that will "leave you guessing until the bitter end!"
"When ailing Plutocrat, Harlan Roderick, invites his young protégé Athul Laal to live at Roderick Place in downtown Manhattan, what Athul believes this to be his first step into the inner circle of the world’s elite, soon turns into a living nightmare. Athul discovers that Harlan and his illness are inextricably connected to the 73-story building, in which, behind each door, lie secrets and monsters from both Harlan and Athul’s own lives.

Greg Hildebrandt, the admired artist and illustrator who created movie posters for the original Star Wars and Clash of the Titans, drew Marvel characters and designed iconic 1970s calendars that celebrated the Lord of the Rings trilogy, has died. He was 85.
Hildebrandt died in Denville, New Jersey, his son, Greg Jr., told The Hollywood Reporter. For the past five months, he had been dealing with a serious side effect from a heart medication.
The artist, who frequently partnered with his late twin brother, Tim Hildebrandt, also illustrated covers for DC Comics and trading cards for an epic 1994 Marvel Masterpieces set; painted artwork for Dungeons & Dragons calendars; and designed covers for the 1981 Black Sabbath album Mob Rules and many LPs from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Without having access to film stills and publicity photos and given a very tight deadline by 20th Century Fox, the brothers painted the “Style B” poster for the U.

Two of Molina’s uncles, both collectors who ran in artistic circles, introduced him to a bohemian lifestyle and range of interests. He met famous painters (Jose Gutierréz Solana), writers (Camilo José Cela), and matadors (Manolete); he was entranced by comic books, the movies, and the occult. When, at his elite boarding school, he was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, he knew to respond with the respectable aspiration of “architect.” Instead, he would become Paul Naschy.Naschy is now synonymous with a mid-century surge in Gothic Eurohorror that replicated in continental Europe the success of Hammer Films in the UK.

The Simpsons’ annual “Treehouse of Horror” Halloween specials were a seasonal highlight and a strong opportunity for the animated series to truly let loose and explore radical riffs on celebrated horror touchstones like The Shining, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and even classic genre archetypes like King Kong and The Twilight Zone. It’s appreciated that The Simpsons hasn’t turned its back on this annual tradition and that it’s still going strong. There are now more “Treehouse of Horror” episodes than there are days in October. Now, despite the pedigree of the “Treehouse of Horror” specials, they’ve become increasingly inconsistent and lazy in many regards, much like The Simpsons as a whole.
The Simpsons’ “Treehouse of Horror” entries now just tackle the biggest pop culture trends, rather than explicitly telling horror stories. Instead of episodes that are focused on successful horror films from the past few years like Smile,...
