Exclusive: Following its surprise three Golden Globe wins Sunday including Best Feature – Drama, The Brutalist from Brady Corbet and A24 is heading into the top 15 regional markets after playing in nine theaters last weekend.
The Adrien Brody-starring movie, which saw the actor win his first Golden Globe last night for Best Actor – Drama, has grossed $1.1 million to date. In the film, Brody plays a Hungarian World War II refugee architect in the U.S. who finds his talents being tapped by an acerbic real estate tycoon played by Guy Pearce. Together, they envision the ideal edifice that will bring communities together — much to their pain. A24 snapped up the movie following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

Actor John Cazale is notable not just for his talents and intensity as a performer, but also for having one of the most impressive filmographies for any actor with a career as short as his. Cazale, a prolific theater veteran, famously only appeared in five feature films before his untimely death of lung cancer in 1978 at the age of 42. Those five films, however, are often considered some of the best and most significant films of the 1970s, which is saying something.
Cazale appeared in three Francis Ford Coppola movies, as well as Sidney Lumet's stirring bank robber drama "Dog Day Afternoon" and Michael Cimino's "The Deer Hunter." Cazale played supporting roles in all of them. Each one of them was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Three of them won.

Martin Scorsese may be revered as one of our greatest living filmmakers, but he has often had to fight tooth and nail to bring his visions to the big screen. This is largely due to the box office. Yes, "Raging Bull," "The King of Comedy," and "Goodfellas" are considered masterpieces, but they were not hits in theatrical release. So when, after being continuously passed over for Academy Award recognition, he set his sights on making his mobbed-up magnum opus "Gangs of New York," just about every studio in town declined to bankroll his dream.
It wasn't like he'd sprung the project on the film industry. Alberto Grimaldi, the renowned Italian producer of classics by Federico Fellini, Sergio Leone, and Bernardo Bertolucci, had taken out an ad announcing the production of the film way back in 1977. But when the New Hollywood revolution died with the bank-breaking failure of Michael Cimino's...

Willem Dafoe is one of the world’s biggest actors — but over five decades on screen, he’s been consistently drawn to oddballs. With his unhinged vampire hunter in Nosferatu about to be unleashed, we speak to him about challenging the norm.
“Chaos reigns,” said the fox.
Lars von Trier’s 2009 drama Antichrist was unforgiving cinema and, as the psychotherapist navigating his wife’s (Charlotte Gainsbourg) overwhelming grief after the death of their young son, Dafoe may have been the only actor capable of taking on its myriad challenges. It made perfect sense that Von Trier would ask him to voice the fox too, uttering those words while eating itself alive.
On screen, Dafoe has never been far from chaos. His first film appearance, in 1980, was in Michael Cimino’s notoriously catastrophic Heaven’s Gate; Dafoe was fired for laughing at a joke on set. He was Oscar-nominated for playing Sgt Elias in 1986’s Platoon,...

I don’t know about you, but growing up, one of my favorite movies ever was the Hillary Duff starrer Casper Meets Wendy. For the longest time, I didn’t even know it was a sequel, but it’s the sweetness with which the two “enemies,” i.e., the ghost and the witch, form an unimaginable bond, is a story of gold. It’s sweet, it’s simple, but it’s also hilarious and the perfect movie for children who like ghosts. Yeah, I know not many of you feel the same way about them as me, but it’s still a cute film, and there’s so much to enjoy about it. Jokes aside though, what’s fantastic about those films is that they make ghosts somewhat “accessible,” for the lack of a better word, and so if you want to try and not feel Fomo during the festivities of Halloween,...

Useful as it may be for facts and stats, an actor’s Wikipedia page isn’t ever the go-to place for a complete, nuanced description of their thespian essence, and so it proves for Isabelle Huppert. “Known for her portrayals of cold, austere women devoid of morality, she is considered one of the greatest actresses of her generation,” states the introduction, in a strikingly selective encapsulation of over half a century on screen. Huppert can certainly do froideur and severity with flair — she’s imposing beyond the bounds of her diminutive frame in such rigorous, chill-carrying films as Claude Chabrol’s “La Cérémonie,” Michael Haneke’s “The Piano Teacher” and of course Paul Verhoeven’s “Elle,” though whether these complex, conflicted women are “devoid of morality” isn’t a call for any one web editor to make.
But it does Huppert an injustice to paint her, however admiringly, as some...

Earlier this year, we learned that Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg is re-teaming with Annabelle: Creation screenwriter Gary Dauberman for a movie based on the horror video game Until Dawn. Production began in August, and now Sandberg and his wife / frequent collaborator Lotta Losten have both taken to Instagram to announce that filming on the video game movie has wrapped!
As The Hollywood Reporter previously noted, first released in 2015, Until Dawn is an interactive horror video game that follows eight friends and frenemies who are brought together a remote mountain retreat. With live or die scenarios featuring a mysterious killer, cannibalistic wendigos, a cable car, and a long-ago mining cave-in that reverberates into the present day, the members of the group must fight through their fear if they all hope to make it through the night in one piece. The game proved to be a...

The movie based on the popular horror game Until Dawn has completed principal photography. Director David F. Sandberg shared a post on social media after wrapping up main filming for the movie. Sandberg is known for directing scary movies like Annabelle: Creation.
The Until Dawn movie is being made by Sony Pictures. It has been in development since 2015, when the interactive game first came out. In the game, a group of young people get trapped in a remote mountain lodge. They have to try escaping while being hunted by a mysterious killer. Players could make choices that impacted what happened in the story. This gave fans control over how gory their experience became.
Sandberg’s post on Instagram showed a clapperboard stained with fake blood. The director’s reflection in a mirror covered in fake gore could also be seen. This suggests the film will have the same frightening tone as the game.

It takes a special kind of star charisma to succeed in two completely different mediums. Of all the singers/actors to work in the industry — from Frank Sinatra to Lady Gaga — and build up impressive resumes in both, few seem as unlikely as Kris Kristofferson. A pioneering figure in the Outlaw Country movement of the ’70s, that took country music out of the Nashville establishment, Kristofferson was an icon of that scene in his own right, and not exactly a conventional choice for a matinee idol or a film star, between his anti-conformist bonafides and his grizzled bearded appearance.
And yet, in the ’70s, that’s briefly exactly what happened. Kristofferson made his film debut in 1971 with “The Last Movie,” as a member of the big ensemble in the metafictional drama from Dennis Hopper, and became a leading man the year later with “Cisco Pike,” a drama in which he...

Kris Kristofferson, the soulful country music superstar who wrote “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” performed with the supergroup The Highwaymen and made audiences swoon in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore and A Star Is Born, has died. He was 88.
Kristofferson died Saturday at home in Maui, Hawaii, his family announced. “We’re all so blessed for our time with him,” they said in a statement. “Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he’s smiling down at us all.”
A native of South Texas, Kristofferson starred in football and rugby and won a Golden Gloves boxing tournament while attending Pomona College in California; earned a Rhodes Scholarship to study literature abroad; and piloted helicopters in the U.S. Army.

Under the best of conditions, Michael Cimino's "Heaven's Gate" was never going to be an easy sell to a studio, nor to moviegoers. Written in 1971, seven years before the writer-director's "The Deer Hunter" won five Academy Awards (including Best Picture and Best Director), the film was to be an epic account of the Johnson County, Wyoming range wars waged by cattlemens' associations versus alleged rustlers (many of whom were simply small farmers and ranchers). This might all sound terribly exciting, fraught with action even, but even on a commercial success like "The Deer Hunter," Cimino evinced an unconventional method of storytelling. He liked to soak the audience in the distinct lives of his characters so that the small and/or massive tragedies of their lives -- and just about everyone meets a tragic terminus in Cimino's prime work -- resonate with a sense of the personal. He wants us to know these people.

For an industry often referred to as a "dream factory," it makes sense that what constitutes a success or a failure in the film business is based largely on perception. This is because the necessary facts in judging a film's financial performance are rarely available for outsiders to peruse. As detailed in the showbiz nonfiction classic "Fatal Subtraction: How Hollywood Really Does Business" by Pierce O'Donnell and Dennis McDougal, studios go to great lengths to conceal their "creative" accounting practices — which, in this case, allowed Paramount to use the profits from the Eddie Murphy blockbuster "Coming to America" to cover the company's overall losses.
Still, some movies are such obvious flops there's no way they're actually, despite their lousy box office performance, secret hits, right?

Kristofferson was already well on his way to becoming a Country Music superstar when he made his acting debut in Dennis Hopper’s The Last Movie (1971), before going on to appear in the likes of Sam Peckinpah’s Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Michael Cimino's Heaven’s Gate (1980), John Sayles’ Lone Star (1996), Martin Scorsese’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974), and the first...

The actor was the real deal, whether as a cherubic psychopath in Peckinpah’s Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, or playing second fiddle to Barbra Streisand in the smash hit A Star Is Born
If Kris Kristofferson had never sung a single note, he would still have been remembered as a terrific screen actor in the Hollywood tradition of tough frontier masculinity, a movie star who worked with Scorsese, Peckinpah, Cimino and Sayles. He had a natural, unforced charisma in the rugged, take-it-or-leave-it tradition of Robert Ryan or John Wayne, or the newer style of Jeff Bridges and Sam Elliott.
Actually, without his recording career, he might have made it higher in the pantheon of screen legends, and his movie work was perhaps one of the casualties of Michael Cimino’s colossal folie de grandeur epic Heaven’s Gate from 1980, which damaged the prestige of everyone involved – Kristofferson was cast, or even miscast,...

Kris Kristofferson — the tough yet weary country music singer/songwriter behind “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” and “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” as well as the rugged leading man featured in romances like “A Star is Born” (1976) and westerns like “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid” — has died at 88. Kris Kristofferson, the legendary country star turned superstar actor, has passed away at 88. No cause of death has yet been revealed, but Kristofferson retired from public life in 2021. While some of you reading this may know him best for playing Whistler in the Blade trilogy, his career goes much deeper than that, making him one of the most fascinating pop culture icons of his time.
Before he ever became an actor, Kristofferson was famous as a writer of country hits, including the immortal “Me and Bobby McGee,” later launching his own recording career, which included multiple Grammy wins and Gold records. But, even before that, he was quite accomplished, being a former Rhodes Scholar and captain in the U.S. Army. He famously turned down a teaching job (in English Lit) at West Point to focus on his musical career. He was seen as one of the leading figures in the Outlaw Country movement,...

The first time I saw Christopher Walken on-screen was as villainous industrialist Max Shreck in Tim Burton's "Batman Returns." That performance stayed with me simply because Walken seemed to play quietly menacing with as much ease as Jack Nicholson plays unhinged. That is to say that villainy seemed to come a little too easily to Walken, who throughout Burton's nightmare expressionist fairytale discovered new facets of odiousness with each successive scene.
32 years after "Batman Returns" debuted, however, Walken's filmography clearly speaks to the man's range. Walken is great at playing villains, but he's proven over the decades that he's capable of so much more. From his role as Frank Abagnale Sr. in Steven Spielberg's "Catch Me If You Can" — for which he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar — to his portrayal of Corporal Nikanor Chevotarevich in Michael Cimino's "The Deer Hunter" — for which he...

Twin brothers Ludovic and Zoran Boukherma left their village in southwest France for Paris just over a decade ago to study film at the Luc Besson-spearheaded L’École de la Cité.
The duo is now settled in the French capital, but they still turn for inspiration to their working-class upbringing in so-called “Peripheral France”, a term coined in the 2010s to describe disadvantaged communities left behind by globalisation.
Their fourth feature And Their Children After Them – which world premieres in competition in Venice this weekend – taps into this world in the 1990s.
Adapted from Nicolas Mathieu’s 2018 novel of the same name, the drama revolves around three youngsters growing up in a former steel town in north-eastern France.
Anthony and Hacine (Sayyid El Alami), are the sons of two ex-steel workers, and Steph (Angelina Woreth), a girl from a comfortable middle-class background.

Amazon MGM Studios has entered into a multi-year film partnership with Scott Stuber, the former head of film at Netflix. As part of the pact, the streamer and studio will finance and release movies from Stuber’s new production company under United Artists, a languishing label that once operated under the auspice of MGM. In its heyday, United Artists released movies like “The Pink Panther,” “Rocky” “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “Network” and the James Bond films. The agreement calls for Stuber and his soon-to-be launched company to produce several films annually. They will be released both theatrically and via Prime Video, Amazon’s streaming service.
Stuber’s new company will be based on Amazon MGM Studios’ Culver City lot. The pact is a first-look one, giving Amazon MGM Studios the initial crack at the projects Stuber develops. In addition, Stuber will be involved in all projects released by the new UA.

John Wayne's rejection of Lonesome Dove may have cost him a final classic, proving he should have accepted it. Wayne's refusal led to the acclaimed Lonesome Dove miniseries, featuring a stellar cast and emotional storytelling. Despite the decline of Westerns in the 1980s, Lonesome Dove became a standout, influencing a comeback in the genre.
The most acclaimed Western of the 1980s only came to pass because John Wayne originally turned it down. When Heaven's Gate bombed it killed Westerns during the 1980s, with the Michael Cimino epic barely taking in $4 million against its $44 million budget (via The Numbers). Of course, the genre had been fading with audiences for some time. Westerns used to be one of the biggest genres in Hollywood, but by the 1960s, younger audiences began to find them old-fashioned.

France’s Deauville American Film Festival has announced a retrospective gathering 50 U.S. features that have challenged perceptions of the world to mark its 50th anniversary.
The selection ranges from D. W. Griffith’s 1916 silent epic Intolerance to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and also includes Ida Lupino’s groundbreaking 1950 rape drama Outrage as well as Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing. (see full list below)
“Cinema has always made us dream, travel, desire, fantasize, laugh, cry. But how many films have been able to shake up our certainties, question our beliefs, question our prejudices and put our own views into perspective?,” said the festival.
“The Deauville American Film Festival wanted to highlight a selection of 50 films that have changed the way we look at the world,” it continued.
Launched in 1975, the festival unfolding in the swanky Normandy beach resort of Deauville, annually fetes Hollywood...

Year of the Dragon receives high praise for its realism from ex-Hong Kong mafia member Jimmy Tsui, who rates the gambling-house scene a near-perfect 9/10. Director Michael Cimino spent a year and a half researching and constructing a detailed replica of New York City's Chinatown for the film. Despite its realistic elements, Year of the Dragon faced criticism for perpetuating Asian-American stereotypes and its impact on New York City's Chinatown community.
Year of the Dragon receives a near-perfect score for realism from a mafia expert. Directed by Michael Cimino, with a script he co-wrote with Oliver Stone (based on the 1981 novel of the same name by Robert Daley), the 1985 neo-noir crime thriller follows a police captain in conflict with a ruthless Triad boss in New York City's Chinatown. Mickey Rourke leads the cast as Captain Stanley White alongside John Lone as Joey Tai, the head of the Triads.

The writer of Jurassic Park. The director of Speed. The star of Mad About You. The quaint Clinton-era notion that a major action blockbuster could be produced with, as the major antagonist, an atmospheric condition and not swarthy terrorists from the Middle East or France. Twister is so 1990s it hurts, but the pain isn’t as exquisite as revisiting a movie you once, for any number of pubescent reasons, loved as a child and now realize is a whirling roar of detritus.
When Twister came out, the traditional ’80s model blockbuster appeared to be on its last legs. Films like John McTiernan’s The Last Action Hero and Kevin Reynolds’s Waterworld made the idea of a central masculine anchor, be he mountainously monolithic or sensitively willowy, seem as ruinous as letting a young Turk hotshot direct your studio’s big epic did in the early ’80s during the...
