Prior to his work on the hit 1989 sitcom "Seinfeld," comedian and actor Michael Richards might have been best-known for his amazing performance in the same year's cult comedy "Uhf," playing the hapless, heroic janitor Stanley Spadowski. Others may also recognize him for playing a violent murderer in "Problem Child," or the slapstick butler Fejos in "Transylvania 6-5000." Of course, those who were watching the ABC stand-up series "Fridays" back in 1980, would already have known Richards for his comedy. By the time "Seinfeld" appeared in his path, Richards was already an experienced performer. 

"Seinfeld," of course, made Richards a millionaire and a household name. Playing the role of Cosmo Kramer netted him three Emmys, and it led to high-profile roles in studio comedy films like "Airheads," and "Trial and Error." He would remain popular until an infamous 2006 incident at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood, California, wherein he aggressively berated hecklers with racial epithets.

Joel Surnow's and Robert Cochran's espionage series "24" debuted on November 6, 2001, and boy howdy was American ready for it. "24" followed the travails and missions of a special law enforcement agency called the Counter-Terrorist Unit and focused primarily on its ethics-optional star agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland). Every season of "24" revealed that evil international terrorists had secured some kind of doomsday device and Jack Bauer had to run around Los Angeles locating baddies, torturing them for information, and kicking in whatever heads needed kicking. 

The show took off in popularity, largely because it matched the politics of the time. It debuted only a month after 9/11, and the "get the terrorists" rhetoric of the George W. Irv Wilson, a former programming executive at NBC and producer of several high profile TV movies that starred Jerry Lewis, Martin Sheen, Telly Savalas, Bruce Dern and Morgan Freeman, died December 26 after a short illness. He was 93.

His death was confirmed by his longtime friend, Tom Nunan, who paid tribute to Wilson on Facebook by writing, “Wilson loved life, and anyone who became close to him knew that a good glass of red wine, a little weed, [his wife’s] cooking, and a Giants game came pretty close to heaven for the well-loved, culturally complex maven.”

The creator of Jesse Stone gave Tom Selleck two simple rules to follow when it came to adapting the character - but the tenth film should finally break them. The “Blue Bloods” star does not understand why CBS is canceling the show after its 14-year run, considering how successful it still is.

“I’m kind of frustrated,” Selleck told TV Insider. “During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for ‘Blue Bloods’ but about it still being wildly successful. In a Top 100 Shows of 2023-2024 (in total viewers, we were number 9 out of 100), if you discount the three football shows, we’re #6! I’m not going to turn into a bitter old guy saying, ‘Get off my lawn!’ I don’t believe in holding grudges, but if you were to say to the television network, ‘Here’s a show you can program in the worst time slot you got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,’ it would be almost impossible to believe.

With Blue Bloods ending in December, Tom Selleck is open to bringing Jesse Stone back to the small screen. Selleck starred in nine films featuring the character. The first eight films aired on CBS from 2005 until 2012, with the ninth film airing on Hallmark Channel in 2015. A 10th movie was being considered back in 2017 but hasn't been made yet.

Based on Robert B. Parker's novels, the movies follow Stone (Selleck), a retired police detective from the Paradise Police Department in Massachusetts. The movies' cast have also included Kohl Sudduth, Kathy Baker, Viola Davis, Vito Rezza, Stephen McHattie, William Devane, Saul Rubinek, and William Sadler.

John Flynn’s Rolling Thunder is a lean, mean revenge thriller that could have only been made in the 1970s. It’s 1973, to be exact, and Major Charles Rane (William Devane) has recently returned to San Antonio after several years in a Viet Cong prison camp. Greeted with a hero’s welcome, Rane has little use for his neighbors’ praise, which he appears to regard (correctly) as an almost poignantly inadequate expression of collective survivor’s guilt.

The character of Jesse Stone began his life in a series of airport novels written by the late Robert B. Parker. The first Jesse Stone novel, "Night Passage," was published in 1997 and it followed the titular former LAPD detective (and divorced recovering alcoholic) as he investigated money laundering and murder in Paradise, Massachusetts. Parker had a hit on his hands with "Night Passage," and proceeded to writer eight additional Jesse Stone novels from 1998 up until his death in 2010. M. Emmet Walsh, the wily character actor who became an audience favorite for his deliciously despicable performances in such films as Blood Simple, Blade Runner, Brubaker and The Jerk, has died. He was 88.

Walsh died Tuesday in St. Albans, Vermont, his longtime manager, Sandy Joseph, told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause was cardiac arrest.

With his distinctive lumbering form and droll delivery, Walsh was an ideal supporting player. A master of off-kilter comic delivery and dogged edginess, he excelled at roles that dwelled in the darker corners of humanity. No matter whom he played, he made a colorful impact.

“A consummate old pro of the second-banana business, Walsh has left his mark on 109 movies and counting, with the grin of that big bastard who stands between you and something else — and knows it,” Nicolas Rapold wrote in a 2011 profile of the actor for L.A. Weekly.

TV writer David Jacobs, who created the classic primetime soap Dallas as well as its long-running spinoff Knots Landing, has died at the age of 84.

Jacobs died on Sunday of complications from a series of infections, his son Aaron told The Hollywood Reporter. He had battled Alzheimer’s over the years as well.

The actress’s son, Greg Sylvander, revealed the tragic news on his Facebook on Friday.

Linda Haynes, an actress in films including Rolling Thunder and Brubaker, has died. She was 75.

She died “peacefully, with her family by her side” on July 17 in Summerville, South Carolina, it was announced. No cause of death was revealed.

“As an only child, I have dreaded these times my entire life,” her son, Greg Sylvander, wrote Friday on Facebook. “I find peace in the knowing that my mother was at peace and had the most beautiful life these final years together with her grandchildren, [my wife] Courtney Sylvander and I. We are going to miss my mom immensely.”

Born Linda Lee Sylvander on Nov. 4, 1947, in Miami, Haynes made her acting debut as Dr. Anne Barton in Latitude Zero (1969). She played barmaid Linda Forchet in the psychological thriller Rolling Thunder (1977) opposite William Devane and Tommy Lee Jones and Carol in Brubaker (1980), starring Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman.

Quentin Tarantino is a big fan of Rolling Thunder and Haynes.

Hollow Man, Kevin Bacon's critically panned adaptation of The Invisible Man, gets a glowing review from VFX artists 23 years after its initial release. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, the film tracks Sebastian Caine (Bacon), a scientist who develops an invisibility serum and becomes dangerous when he is unable to reverse his own transformation. In addition to Bacon, Hollow Man stars Elisabeth Shue, Josh Brolin, Kim Dickens, and Greg Grunberg. Despite the negative reception, Hollow Man performed well at the box office and earned praise for its special effects.

In Corridor Crew's recent video, VFX artists looked at some Hollow Man scenes and broke down their impressive CGI. When it came to Sebastian's transformation, they lauded the film's tracking and how his muscles appeared. In another sequence, where fire sprinklers get Sebastian wet, the artists explained that Bacon was actually present, wearing all black, and were impressed by the way objects could be seen through him.

Quentin Tarantino arrived at the Cannes International Film Festival to participate in the activities of the Quinzaine des Cinéastes. For those responsible for this parallel section of the festival, the presence of the Hollywood director meant historical rectification, because more than 30 years ago, they missed the opportunity to have the director's first film, Reservoir Dogs, in their selection. Exclusive: Quentin Tarantino, sitting in the shade on the Carlton Hotel terrace, revealed to this column that his new film will indeed be about a movie critic from the 1970s but he stressed that it won’t be about the New Yorker’s Pauline Kael. Instead, it will be based on a man who wrote for a porno magazine.

Alfred Hitchcock is one of the most important and influential directors in cinema history, and anyone aspiring to become a filmmaker should do themselves a favor and study his body of work. This one man pioneered numerous filmmaking techniques still used today, shot some of the industry's most famous scenes, elevated the thriller genre to new heights, and achieved so much more than can be crammed into this paragraph. In fact, there's an argument to be made that Hitchcock's genius is so great that simply watching his movies is a fine substitute for enrolling in an expensive film school.

If you’re a film fanatic, one book that’s absolutely worth checking out is Quentin Tarantino’s Cinema Speculation (buy it here). On the brilliant Video Archives podcast (which you really should be listening to), Tarantino downplays the autobiographical nature of the book, which is mostly about his reactions to the films that were seminal to him as a child of the seventies. But, along with the film analysis, there’s a lot of interesting, autobiographical material that adds up to a nostalgic depiction of a young film fan coming of age. For a lot of us, it’s tough not to relate.

With that in mind, Tarantino’s formative films are likely different than the ones from those of us who grew up a generation or so later, but every single movie that he mentions is well worth seeking out. Here are five to get started with:

In 2021, “WandaVision” star Paul Bettany made history as the first man to be Emmy-nominated for a lead performance on a Marvel TV series, thus laying the groundwork for 2022 hopefuls Tom Hiddleston (“Loki”), Oscar Isaac (“Moon Knight”) and Jeremy Renner (“Hawkeye”). Although he lost the last Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor race to Ewan McGregor (“Halston”), he may now get an immediate second shot at the same prize based on his work on “A Very British Scandal.” Luckily for him, there is ample precedent for back-to-back bids in this category.

The first man recognized twice in a row for TV movie and/or limited series roles was Mickey Rooney. His example has been followed by 16 others, beginning with George C. Scott. This is a film that has a reputation. Even though Bosch has wrapped seven great seasons on Amazon Prime Video, Harry Bosch’s story is still far from over! The police procedural streaming series, starring Titus Welliver as LA Police detective Harry Bosch, continues in new format with a new title – Bosch: Legacy.

But don’t call it a spinoff, as star Welliver doesn’t truly categorize it as such. “I shudder to call it a spin-off because it’s really not; it’s just the continuing saga of Harry Bosch,” he told EW. “He’s in a different place, but it’s a continuation… A lot is revealed toward the end of this final season of Bosch — I do air quotes on that, ‘final season’ — which lays the foundation for where we will find these three characters as we open the new show.”

A spinoff of Prime Video’s seven-season adaptation of Michael Connelly’s Bosch novels, Bosch: Legacy again stars Titus Welliver as the former LAPD detective, who a year-and-a-half after the events of the previous series’ finale is finding work here and there as a private detective. Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver) has quit the LAPD and is now a private investigator who makes “fewer compromises” in the first trailer for Imbd TV’s “Bosch: Legacy,” the spinoff of Prime Video’s longest-running original series, police drama “Bosch.”

While he’s off the force, his daughter Maddie (Madison Lintz) is now a rookie cop who seems able to handle herself just fine. Her dad tells her, “You have to decide what kind of cop you want to be. It’s either a mission or it’s just a job.” Given that both her parents were cops, Maddie’s mission seems clear, if only dad can stop worrying about her working the East Hollywood beat.

The spinoff finds Harry reluctantly teaming up with former enemy, attorney Honey “Money” Chandler (Mimi Rogers) and relying on jazz-loving tech guy Maurice “Mo” Bassi (Stephen A. Chang).

Exclusive: In the wake of his seven-figure spec sale of The Bee Keeper to Miramax, which has Jason Statham attached to star, Kurt Wimmer will next direct his original script Solara for Oakhurst Entertainment and The Motus Studios.

The project is billed as a throwback to the raw and down-and-dirty tone and ethos of such 1970s movies as the Charles Bronson, Elmore Leonard scripted Mr Majestyk and the John Flynn-directed, Paul Schrader co-scripted Rolling Thunder starring Tommy Lee Jones and William Devane.

The project will be produced and financed by Jai Khanna and Marina Grasic of Oakhurst Entertainment along with Emanuele Moretti of The Motus Studios. Wimmer will also produce. Verve Ventures arranged the financing and will co-represent domestic rights with Motus handling international.

“Astonishingly powerful and poignant, Wimmer’s script has a furious sense of purpose. It was a no-brainer for us to dive in,” Khanna tells Deadline.
