Oscar winner Colman Domingo says the second season of Batman Unburied: Fallen City, the superhero podcast from Spotify, Warner Bros and D.C., promises a revealing look into the mind of a grieving Bruce Wayne.
“This story, one that explores Bruce losing a friend and an emotional new discovery about his parents’ death, was exciting and challenging. I can’t wait for listeners to experience the twists and turns awaiting them,” Domingo, who voices the role of Batman, said in a statement on Tuesday.
A synopsis for the second season, to premiere Nov. 26, indicates Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent launching a social program that rattles the Gotham City elites, while winning over the city’s newest masked figure, the Oracle of Gotham. But when Harvey goes missing, Batman is forced to descend into the city’s labyrinthian underground, uncovering a horrific conspiracy by a secret society that has ruled Gotham for ages,...

Presumably in an effort to make his own weed consumption seem restrained by comparison, this week Bill Maher hosted stoner legends Cheech and Chong in the subterranean museum of futile Boomer rage known as Club Random.
The two-hour-plus podcast cycled through a number of assorted topics, from Ridley Scott movies, to whether or not Donald Trump wears diapers, to Maher’s fear of TikTok. But the most interesting conversation concerned Tommy Chong’s 2003 arrest. The comedian was nabbed for selling bongs online, which actually resulted in jail time after he pled guilty in order to protect his son, who was also a part of the company.
According to Chong, this was all because of George W. Bush. “They had a hit on me. The Bush family,” Chong explained. When Maher questioned whether or not the president was trying to have the comedian killed, Chong clarified that he meant that his...

"The Golden Girls" is basically the perfect sitcom, following the antics of four mature women who share a house in Miami, Florida. The series began in September 1985 and ran for seven seasons before ending in May 1992, and it's only grown in popularity since it first aired. It's a blast to tune in to see what the hilariously horny Blanche (Rue McClanahan), bubbly airhead Rose (Betty White), sarcastic divorcee Dorothy (Bea Arthur), and her smart-mouthed mother Sophia (Estelle Getty) get up to in each episode, and it's pretty easy to hit play on one and end up watching an entire season before you know it. It's really no surprise that the series has found new fans in the streaming era, so when there were rumors of a Disney+ reboot of the series sometime in 2024, people went bonkers.
Some fans were furious about the idea of doing "The Golden Girls" without the original cast,...

20 years ago, “Lost” premiered on ABC and made TV history.
The series premiere was already the most expensive TV pilot ever made, but from the moment Jack (Matthew Fox) opened his eye in the pilot created by Damon Lindelof, J.J. Abrams, and Jeffrey Lieber, nothing would ever be the same. Over the course of six seasons and 121 episodes, “Lost” earned Emmys and accolades, amassed a hugely dedicated and intrepid fanbase, and changed the television landscape.
A lot has changed in the two decades since that series premiere. For some, the show’s legacy was tarnished by later seasons and particularly the Season 6 finale (agree to disagree). More troublingly, writers and actors from the “Lost” heyday have spoken out about what they found to be a sexist, racist, and generally toxic work environment. Actor Harold Perrineau was actually speaking honestly about his experiences back when he was still a series regular,...

Exclusive: Madison Tevlin, an actress, model, advocate, speaker and digital creator seen in Focus Features’ Champions, has signed with UTA for representation across areas including Creators, Unscripted, Audio, Publishing, Talent, Foundation, Culture and Leadership.
In Bobby Farrelly’s Special Olympics dramedy Champions, released last year, Tevlin shares the screen with Woody Harrelson, Kaitlin Olson, Ernie Hudson, Cheech Marin and more. A viral phenom whose successes challenge misperceptions of those with Down Syndrome, she says the disorder has often left her underestimated, though it’s certainly the least interesting thing about her.
Tevlin captured the attention and hearts of people around the world when at 12 years old, she took to YouTube to share her cover of John Legend’s “All of Me.” The post went viral, garnering over eight million views, and later that same year, she was invited to perform before a live audience of 80,000 people at the 2015 Special Olympics.

Streamers lead the field for the 2024 Imagen Awards nominations. The Imagen Foundation said today Prime Video scored a leading 27 noms, followed by Apple TV+ with 17 and Netflix with 14.
Apple’s comedy Acapulco is tops among programs with nine noms, and Prime Video’s A Million Miles Away topped the movie field with eight, including Best Actor for Michael Peña and Best Actress for Rosa Salazar. See the full list of 30 categories below.
The Imagen Awards, which honor Latinos who made significant contributions to the television, film, and streaming spaces, will be handed out Sunday, September 8, at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes in Los Angeles.
“As the Latino talent community is often overlooked in other major entertainment awards, we recognize the extraordinary caliber of talent and the diverse roles and projects that Latinos contribute to advance the industry,” Imagen Foundation President Helen Hernandez said in a statement. “The nominations received surpassed all expectations.

There’s been a lot of media commentary recently about an independent film called “The Long Game” that unseated “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” from its No. 1 slot on Netflix in the U.S. “The Long Game,” a period feel-good drama starring Jay Hernandez, Cheech Marin and Dennis Quaid, has also grabbed attention by ranking as Nextflix’s sixth most popular film on a global basis.
In my view, none of the various headlines spurred by “The Long Game” really understood the data aspect that drove what happened with the movie. They didn’t give credit where credit is properly due. The headline I would write would be “Small-Budget, PG, Period, Indie Film with U.S. Latinos Portrayed as Heroes Dethrones $150 Million Hollywood Franchise.” Yes, it’s a bit long but hopefully you get my point.
The real significance that has been missed in this David vs Goliath story is...

Netflix had a surprise switch-up at the top of their movie chart here in the US. The golf drama “The Long Game” just bumped Eddie Murphy’s “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” from the number one spot. Talk about unexpected!
“The Long Game” stars Dennis Quaid, Jay Hernandez, and Cheech Marin in the story of a school superintendent facing racism at an all-white country club. It came out on Netflix last week and quickly rocketed to the top. And it’s no surprise – the movie has a perfect 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes! Clearly folks are really enjoying it.
Meanwhile, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” had a solid week-long run at number one after its successful debut. The action-comedy, also starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kevin Bacon, pulled in 41 million global viewers in the first week. Not too shabby!
The volatility of streaming is plain to see. Like the Italian thriller...

Lost began streaming on Netflix last week, which meant the Internet was once again legally obligated to lose its collective mind about Lost. Practically since it debuted on ABC 20 years ago this fall, the sci-fi drama about survivors of a plane crash who find themselves trapped on a mysterious island seemed custom-built to inspire people to get mad at each other online.

In David Hinton’s new documentary “Made in England: The Films of Powell & Pressburger,” Martin Scorsese talks about the profound influence the films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger had on him.
A young, asthmatic Scorsese grew up largely an indoor child when American films weren’t licensed to television, so he feasted on the duo’s great British films like “The Red Shoes” and “Tales of Hoffmann.” Co-written and narrated by Scorsese, “Made in England” makes direct connections between a Powell and Pressburger film like “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp” and Scorsese’s “The Age of Innocence” and “Raging Bull.” In one remarkable sequence, Hinton even crosscuts between Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) from “Taxi Driver” and Boris Lermontov (Anton Walbrook) from “The Red Shoes,” as Scorsese narrates, “They’re both characters on the edge of things, listening, observing other people, always on the verge of exploding.

Good news for people who don’t want to spend a single second of the summertime outdoors — all six seasons of the hit ABC series Lost are now streaming on Netflix. Judging from the reaction on social media, a lot of people are excited to rewatch the popular, and frequently misunderstood, sci-fi series.
While we mostly remember Lost for its dramatic storylines, wacky twists and improbably hot plane crash survivors, there was some comedy to be found in the show too. Case in point, Hurley’s dad was played by the great Cheech Marin, who somehow wasn’t responsible for creating the “Smoke Monster.”
But in retrospect, the most notable cameo for comedy fans was when It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney showed up in Season Three as “Aldo,” an armed guard working for the mysterious “Others.” We first see him reading a copy of Stephen Hawking’s...

Exclusive: After wrapping production on his suspenseful romance Fate, starring Faye Dunaway, Harvey Keitel and Andrew McCarthy — a film currently in search of domestic distribution — director Jonathan Baker is gearing up for production in 2025 on Icon, which will be his final film.
Blending American immigration history with rock and roll, the film is about a soul that moves through a hundred years until it reaches its destiny as a rock star, using one family’s saga through immigration and musical history as its backdrop. Baker wrote the script with his Fate collaborator Michael Buhlman, with production to kick off in 2025. He’s also expected to produce for his Baker Entertainment Group.
“I’ve waited my entire life to share this story,” Baker told Deadline. “This narrative of Icon is crucial to America, highlighting the significance of immigration and how it shaped our nation. Our past is integral to our identity.

We all know that Danny Trejo has spent time in prison, with a criminal record going back to his youth and extending into the ‘60s, long before he got his acting going. And it was during one of his latter stints that Trejo came across a fella who had yet to get his music career off the ground: none other than Charles Manson, who himself was a career criminal when the two encountered each other. Fortunately, Trejo took a considerably different path than being responsible for maybe the most notorious murders of the century…but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have a unique experience with the cult leader.
Danny Trejo recalled meeting Charles Manson in the early ‘60s and even offering him protection. In turn, Manson introduced Trejo to the ways of hypnosis. “There were three people in my cell, and when we found out Charlie could hypnotize us,...

M. Emmet Walsh is dead at the age of 88, his manager Sandy Joseph told IndieWire. The grizzled character actor appeared in Hollywood movies across 55 years and was one of the most recognizable “oh yeah, that guy!” performers in the industry. Even just by saying “grizzled character actor” you probably pictured him, even if you didn’t know his name.
Walsh had bit parts in “Midnight Cowboy,” “Little Big Man,” “Serpico,” “What’s Up, Doc?” and “The Gambler” at the start of his career. But it’s two films from the early 1980s that put him on the map and truly lodged him in the consciousness of cinephiles: “Blade Runner” and “Blood Simple.” In Ridley Scott’s film he played Capt. Bryant, who sends Harrison Ford’s Decker on his quest to terminate the escaped, murderous replicants. Or “retire” them, rather. That’s the kind of euphemism Walsh, in his rumpled way,...

Screen legends Paul Newman and Robert Redford’s second and final screen pairing, in 1973’s The Sting, proved even more popular at the box office than their first, 1969’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The film — about a syndicate of confidence men planning cons in the Great Depression — was a dream shoot on the Universal backlot set, save for one persistent annoyance: Redford was always late.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its seven Oscar wins, the team behind The Sting — producers Michael Phillips and Tony Bill (the third producer, Julia Phillips, ex-wife of Michael and author of You’ll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again, died in 2002) and screenwriter David S. Austin, TX – The depth and number of films at the SXSW Film & TV Festival portion of the week is nirvana for a film geek’s adventure. Here are three of the films I caught at SXSW … all led by familiar names and have high interest. “Arcadian,” “Gutter” and “Cheech and Chong’s Last Movie” … look for them in 2024.
Arcadian

This harkens back to the kid-in-dystopia craze from the young adult fiction adaptations … think “Hunger Games.” Nicolas Cage is Paul, a father who managed to save his two sons Joseph and Thomas (Jaeden Martell and Maxwell Jenkins) from a post-apocalyptic event. Holed up in a remote UK farm area, the trio fights off a band of creatures who are evolving and mutating … to rid the human virus from planet earth. This is the kid’s story, not Cage-as-Paul’s adventures, but as usual Nic adds the...

Austin, TX – One thing that SXSW attracts are movie stars. With the big premieres headquartered at the famous art deco Paramount Theatre in Austin, audiences were treated to appearances by the legendary Susan Sarandon (“Gutter”), a reunited Cheech & Chong, and for the creme de la creme we were in the “Cage.” The great Nicolas Cage appeared on behalf of “Arcadian.”

Cheech and Chong persist in the popular culture mainly as a metonym for stoner humor, but as any comedy fan knows, even the dumbest jokes — the one’s that can only be enjoyed while baked — don’t just appear out of smoke-filled air. “Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie,” a new documentary chronicling the eponymous duo’s meteoric rise in the 1970s, emphasizes the sheer amount of work and determination it took to become one of America’s most popular comedy acts. Long before Seth Rogen was born, Cheech and Chong were the hardest-working potheads in Hollywood, even if they played exaggerated burnouts on screen and stage.
Alas, every success story comes with its fair share of complications. “Last Movie” also explores the financial headaches and managerial difficulties Cheech and Chong weathered at the height of their success, as well as the creative differences that ultimately drove the two men apart.

“Holy s—,” an audience member shouted as Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong took the stage at C-Boy’s Heart and Soul, an off-the-beaten path Austin nightclub that hosted a brief reunion by the legendary stoner comedy duo, who came to SXSW to shop their feature documentary “Cheech and Chong’s Last Movie.”
As the pair ambled on stage, Chong picked up an acoustic guitar and gave it a strum. Marin, 77, cringed as it became immediately clear that the instrument was woefully out of tune. Chong, 85, who wore a varsity sports jacket bedecked with marijuana leaf motifs and “Team 420” emblazoned on the back, changed it out for an electric Gibson that was camera-ready to play.
“Oooh, he’s going electric,” Marin joked. Chong hit a few more notes and then Marin introduced what he described as “a song of my people.” The tune was in keeping with Cheech and Chong’s classic routines of story songs.

“Cheech and I were on the Paramount lot after we’d done the movie, and we’re kind of trying to figure out what we were going to do next— how we were going to get another movie going,” remembers Tommy Chong of the weeks following the 1978 release of Up in Smoke, the first film from him and comedy partner Cheech Marin. “And Warren Beatty, pulls up in his convertible. He took off his sunglasses and looked at us and he goes, ‘You guys have no idea what you’ve done.’ And we looked at each other like thinking, ‘Oh, what did we do?’ What we did was we pulled a movie out of thin air.”
Up in Smoke, which was made independently by principals with no filmmaking experience, grossed over $100 million at the box office, simultaneously launching and proving the commercial value of the genre, all in one go.

Grindhouse is one of the most influential box office failures of the 21st century. Despite grossing a paltry $25.4 million at the box office on a budget of around $60 million, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 love letter to exploitation cinema has managed to spawn four spin-off movies — Machete, Machete Kills, Hobo with a Shotgun, and now Thanksgiving— in addition to reintroducing a vintage aesthetic that has been mimicked by countless other throwback movies.
Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof each have their merits — the former plays like a satirical pastiche of nonstop action, while the latter is more indicative of genuine exploitation fare — but Grindhouse is more than just a double feature. It’s an experience, complete with faux aging to recreate the look of beat-up film prints along with vintage interstitials and retro-inspired trailers for nonexistent movies.

Julio Quintana (Blue Miracle) directed true golf story set in 1950s.
XYZ Films has come on board international sales at AFM for sports drama and SXSW Narrative Spotlight Audience Award winner The Long Game starring Dennis Quaid and Jay Hernandez.
Julio Quintana (Blue Miracle) directed the true story of five young Mexican American caddies in 1955 who created their own golf course in the middle of the South Texas brush country.

Plot: When the children of the world’s greatest secret agents unwittingly help a powerful Game Developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, they must become spies themselves to save their parents and the world.
Review: Robert Rodriguez has always had two distinct film output: mature genre offerings aimed at adult audiences and family-friendly action flicks aimed at the youngest viewers. While Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios has used in-house special effects work to deliver pulpy flicks like Machete and the recent Hypnotic, the full-blown CGI worlds of the Spy Kids films have given the indie filmmaker a playground to make every childhood fantasy come to life. After four films centered on the Cortez family of spies, Rodriguez and his son Racer Max have written a franchise reboot centered on two new pint-sized agents as they use their knowledge of video games to save their parents and the world.
