One of David Cronenberg‘s most beloved films is getting a brand-new ultra-high-definition treatment. Blu-ray.com has revealed that the label Second Sight is going to be releasing new Blu-rays and 4K Blu-rays of Scanners. The sci-fi thriller, which features powerful telepaths, is sealed in history as having one of (if not The best) head explosion scenes. And you can now see it in every gory detail when the new physical media is released on March 31.
Scanners stars Jennifer O’Neill, Stephen Lack, Patrick McGoohan, Lawrence Dane, and Michael Ironside. Following his 1975 film Shivers, Cronenberg penned a treatment for a sci-fi story called Telepathy 2000. The basic idea of the plot concerned a protagonist named Harley Quinn raping a woman telepathically in a subway before revealing itself as a spy story of corporate espionage. The evil Cytodyne Amalgamate Corporation deliberately bred Scanners as a government program to overtake the world. This idea...

The thing about episodes of "Columbo" is that they're kind of like slices of pizza: even when they're not that great, they're still pretty wonderful. There really aren't any god-awful episodes of "Columbo," and ranking the best of them is a challenge. "Columbo" is pure comfort, a show that feels like a warm hug because Peter Falk as the titular detective is the ultimate dream of what justice should look like. Columbo almost always gets his villain, the bad guys are usually the rich and entitled, and the world feels like a better place, all within the span of 90 minutes or so. I've already written at length about which "Columbo" episodes are the absolute best (in my humble opinion), but how did Falk feel about the series?
Back in the early 1990s, Falk did a special for A&e where he went over his favorite episodes from the NBC era of the series,...

Plot: Two Mormons (Chloe East and Sophie Thatcher) on a mission knock on the wrong door and find themselves fighting for their lives, faith, and sanity.
Review: Heretic is the latest horror flick from A24, and like many of their genre efforts, it’s a provocative one. Questions of theology and faith are always timely, and much of this diabolical and impressively harsh horror film deals with whether or not – in the face of great conflict – you can maintain your faith or be swayed by both the desire to save your own life and the evidence you’re being presented with.
In this, Sister Paxton (Chloe East) and Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) are young Mormons fulfilling their duties as missionaries by essentially going door-to-door to try to convert people to their faith. Neither is a particular stickler for Mormon theology, with the movie opening with them discussing pornography and condoms,...

The 1983 helicopter action film Blue Thunder is said to be the inspiration for Christopher Nolan’s next film – at least according to the latest rumour circulating.
Speculation regarding Christopher Nolan’s next project is really starting to ramp up with rumours emerging, being debunked and then replaced, almost as quickly as we can cover them. It’s been a week since it was officially confirmed that the British filmmaker would be following up the incredible critical and commercial success of last year’s Oppenheimer by once again partnering with Universal. We also got a release date for the next Nolan project: 17th July, 2026.
With Nolan projects being what they are, a typical veil of secrecy surrounds the movie but fear not, the ever-dependent rumour mill has ground into action and in the seven days or so that have followed, we’ve had series of reports offer differing threads of speculation...

Christopher Nolan and Steven Spielberg both have new movies going head-to-head in the summer of 2026 for the first time since their blockbuster showdown in 2008. Nolan and Spielberg both have upcoming projects set to be released within the same window in 2026 Nolan in July, Spielberg in May which means these two titans of big-budget filmmaking will be competing for the attention (and disposable income) of cinema audiences. This will be the first time that Nolan and Spielberg have had competing blockbusters hitting theaters at the same time since way back in 2008.
There have been other years since 2008 when Nolan and Spielberg both had movies released, but they were more when Spielberg had awards-season fare that wouldnt compete with Nolans mega-budget spectacle films. Spielberg released Lincoln in the Oscar season of 2012 after Nolan had released The Dark Knight Rises in the summer. Spielberg released The Post in the Oscar season of 2017 after...

Ever since Christopher Nolan won the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director with his blockbuster historical drama "Oppenheimer" (four words you rarely read together), the entire film industry has been keeping a close eye on the filmmaker's next move. Nolan's creative whims have always driven speculation within the business, but this time around it wasn't just about what he would do next but where he would do it.
For almost a decade, this wasn't a concern. After his breakthrough neo-noir masterpiece "Memento" turned him into one of the hottest young directors in Hollywood, Christopher Nolan made his first studio effort, "Insomnia," at Warner Bros., and called the big house in Burbank his home for close to a decade. What changed? The Covid pandemic and then WB production chief Jason Kilar's decision in 2020, via his Project Popcorn initiative, to release the company's entire slate for the year day-and-date...

Deadline reports that Matt Damon is in talks to star in Christopher Nolan’s next movie. The Oppenheimer director is sticking with Universal Pictures for this new project, which will be released in IMAX on July 17, 2026. The studio was keen to keep Nolan around, particularly after the massive success of Oppenheimer, which grossed $977 million worldwide and picked up seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor.
As is typical with any Nolan project, details are being kept under wraps, but sources did tell Deadline that the film is looking to kick off production in early 2025. THR’s Borys Kit added that he’s heard the film is a “father-and-son story,” which could mean just about anything. If Damon signs on the dotted line, this will mark his third time working with Nolan. The actor was featured in a supporting role in Interstellar and played General Leslie Groves,...

Albus Dumbledore is one of the most iconic characters in the Harry Potter franchise, but the Dumbledore actor changed part way through the movie series. Dumbledore was played by Michael Gambon in six movies and Jude Law in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them spin-offs, but was initially portrayed by Irish actor Richard Harris in the first two Harry Potter films. When the role was initially being cast, actors Patrick McGoohan and Sean Connery were targeted for the part. Harris was eventually chosen as Dumbledore and was expected to play the part throughout the entire film franchise.
Harris initially hesitated to take the role due to his health, but the actor was encouraged by his young granddaughter. The actor perfectly embodied the exceptional wizard and Harry's mentor in the franchise's first two installments. But before the release of Chamber of Secrets in November 2002, Harris' health took a turn for the worse.

Some war movies exaggerate battle scenes for dramatic effect, leading to inaccuracies in tactics, weapons, and historical details. Movies prioritizing themes of heroism may sacrifice accuracy in depictions of warfare during major conflicts. In some cases, the story prioritizes themes and moral lessons over historical realism in action movies.
Movies about warfare have been known to exaggerate how certain battles would happen for dramatic effect, which has given rise to criticism of some battle scenes for their accuracy and realism. The most inaccurate war movies ever feature plenty of scenes like this, which can be picked apart regarding tactics, weapons in use, and historical details about who was involved. Many critiqued battle scenes are from movies claiming to be historical dramas. However, experts have also offered their takes on works of fiction allegedly depicting real military tactics.

There are plenty of great Clint Eastwood movie moments in "Escape from Alcatraz," but it's not just the veteran star that made this a legendary prison break thriller. Directed by Don Siegel, the film was an adaptation of J. Campbell Bruce's 1963 non-fiction book of the same name, which chronicled the real-life June 1962 Alcatraz escape attempt. "Escape" also marked the fifth and final collaboration between the Siegel and Eastwood, and it's a fitting end to their fruitful working relationship. Still regarded as one of the finest films of the 1970s, "Escape" was met with widespread critical acclaim upon its 1979 release and its reputation hasn't faltered since.
Aside from the tight direction and excellent lead performance, the film also features stellar supporting performances from the likes of Patrick McGoohan, Fred Ward, Jack Thibeau, and Larry Hankin. What's more, it marked the film debut of Danny Glover, who of course went on...

Christopher Nolan on the set of Tenet / Warner Bros Pictures
It is evident that Nolan worked tremendously hard on Oppenheimer, and with that kind of massive production and award-winning storyline, he would need new creative inspiration to work on his next endeavor.
Christopher Nolan On His Next Hollywood Project
In an interview with Empire via Twitter, producer Emma Thomas revealed they have not started any new project nor thought of new concepts to bring to the screen.
I would say it’s very exciting. This is the moment where the possibilities are sort of limitless, we haven’t started thinking practicalities, or anything. Oppenheimer was so absurdly successful and we...

Tom Hardy's potential lead role in Nolan's upcoming remake of 'The Prisoner' marks a long-awaited collaboration between the duo. Hardy's past roles as morally complex characters make him the perfect fit to play Number Six in the remake of the cult classic series. Nolan's remake of 'The Prisoner' could utilize Hardy's ability to portray dualities and dark sides, enhancing the impact of the original show's enigmatic ending.
Although Christopher Nolan still hasnt given one of his most frequent collaborators a lead role, his upcoming remake of a 60s cult classic gives the duo the perfect chance to reunite. Christopher Nolan has built up a stable of regular collaborators, with a handful of actors appearing in numerous movies by the director. The Prisoner's obscure and ambiguous ending is what made the original series historically important. Nolan's remake must maintain the original's mystery and avoid offering clear explanations to succeed. Nolan's intricate worldbuilding may face a challenge with The Prisoner's need for ambiguity and no answers.
Although Christopher Nolan's next movie has the potential to be a great remake, the directors love of intricate worldbuilding may ironically work against him in this instance. Christopher Nolans movies are nothing if not perfectly crafted. Nolan's best and worst movies all run like clockwork, with their twisty plots becoming clearer as the story progresses. The directors breakout hit Memento infamously told its tale backward, an ingenious twist that reinvented the tired whodunit formula. Since then, hits like Inception, Interstellar, and The Prestige all succeeded in making their complex, labyrinthine stories accessible for a mainstream audience.
However, Nolans rumored next movie may run into trouble.

The annals of unmade Christopher Nolan films are not particularly long. Perhaps one of the legendary projects mentioned in the past was Nolan’s unrealized Howard Hughes project—some brief elements of which he folded into Bruce Wayne’s recluse period in “The Dark Knight Rises.” There was also, at one point in the past, Nolan’s intentions of remaking the surreal 1960s TV series, “The Prisoner,” created by and starring Patrick McGoohan (which is loosely rumored to be among the next projects he is thinking about making post “Oppenheimer”).

Lashana Lynch became the first woman to own the 007 title in the 2021 James Bond tentpole “No Time to Die,” but it turns out a plan to make James Bond a woman was actually pitched over 60 years prior. In Nicholas Shakespeare’s upcoming biography of Bond author Ian Fleming, titled “Ian Fleming: The Complete Man,” it’s confirmed that producer Gregory Ratoff floated the idea of casting Susan Hayward in a film adaptation of Fleming’s first Bond novel “Casino Royale.”
Shakespeare writes in the biography (via IndieWire): “Since the mid-1950s, many well-known actors had been approached [to play Bond]. Gregory Ratoff had the arresting idea of having Bond played by a woman, Susan Hayward. Ian had entertained several possibilities, from Richard Burton (‘I think that Richard Burton would be by far the best James Bond’), to James Stewart (‘I wouldn’t at all mind him as Bond if he can slightly...

Yes, a female James Bond has been over a half-century in the making.
Before Lashana Lynch briefly donned the 007 title in “No Time to Die,” the film adaptation of “Dr. No,” a woman was in talks to lead the franchise 50 years prior.
In Nicholas Shakespeare’s upcoming biography of Bond author Ian Fleming, titled “Ian Fleming: The Complete Man,” it’s revealed that original “Casino Royale” producer Gregory Ratoff had imagined a woman in the titular lead role. In fact, Oscar-winning actress Susan Hayward was in Ratoff’s mind to take the part.
Prior to “Casino Royale,” the two Bond films had floundered with “Thunderball” and “Casino Royale” receiving poor reviews, hence the proposed gender-swap.

As Christopher Nolan basks in the afterglow of Oppenheimer’s dominant performance at the 96th annual Academy Awards – including a best picture win for the film and a long-overdue best director nod for Nolan himself – speculation is growing about what the British filmmaker will tackle next for his 13th feature. Nolan is typically reticent to speak about future projects; with the director working on a more or less three-year cycle for his last several films, he might not even officially say anything about his new movie until later in 2024 or early in 2025.
But according to rumors that have surfaced online in the past week, Nolan may tackle as his next film a big-screen version of the cult classic TV series The Prisoner, which was broadcast in the UK in 1967 and the US in 1968. The show, which ran for a single season consisting of 17 episodes, was created by Irish actor/writer Patrick McGoohan,...

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was not only one of the biggest movies that came out in 2023 but it was also one of the movies that managed to sweep the most during the award season. Oppenheimer won the Best Picture award at the 96th Academy Awards held on March 10th, 2024 along with Nolan winning the Best Director award.
Oppenheimer starring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer became the third highest-grossing movie of 2023. One of the most significant things about Oppenheimer is the alternative scenes between colored and black and white to convey the story from both subjective and objective perspectives. Now, fans are curious about Nolan’s next big project and according to reports, it’s the one he left behind in 2009.

Christopher Nolan's potential remake of "The Prisoner" offers more creative freedom than tackling James Bond, leading to a potentially riveting and visually stunning project. "The Prisoner" is a perfect fit for Nolan due to its genre blending of spy thriller and sci-fi mystery, aligning with his past works like "Inception" and "Interstellar." Winning seven awards at the 2024 Academy Awards, "Oppenheimer" has cleared the path for Nolan to potentially tackle "The Prisoner" as his next project, offering a fresh and exciting alternative to James Bond.

The Oscars may have concluded, but there’s one more piece of the awards season worth checking out before we fully move on to 2024 in cinema. A welcome annual tradition, the Directors Guild of America gathered their nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film––Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Greta Gerwig (Barbie), Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things), Alexander Payne (The Holdovers) and ––for an extensive, nearly two-hour conversation. Moderated by Jeremy Kagan, the conversation took place in February at the DGA’s Los Angeles Theater ahead of Nolan taking home the top award.
The wide-ranging talk dives deep into the preparation and production of each of the features, with Gerwig discussing the intentional dreamlike artificiality of her Barbie sets, Nolan on his fascinating approach of shooting the tower that held the Trinity Test bomb, Scorsese on how Robert De Niro’s real-life injury brought...

Christopher Nolan’s hard work finally paid off, and he won his first Oscar for directing and Best Picture for Oppenheimer. Now, all eyes are on his next project, and some news reports claim that his next film will be a remake. He will not stray away from his genre of mystery, though.
Nolan and his Oppenheimer team won seven Oscars at the 96th Academy Awards this year. He is known for making movies with complex subjects and themes. The celebrated director gave the world one of the most iconic villains in cinema history with Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight Rises. Even after making so many remarkable films like Interstellar, Inception, and Tenet, the director never received an Oscar, but it has finally happened.

After earning seven Academy Awards for his latest opus, Oppenheimer, everyone wants to know what Christopher Nolan will be doing next. The short answer, of course, is anything he wants. But, buried within a Variety report about how much the director earned for Oppenheimer is a juicy tidbit teasing he might be directing an adaptation of the classic ’60s series The Prisoner! Widely considered one of the greatest TV shows of all time, it starred Patrick McGoohan (who was also the creative mind behind the show) as an unnamed British spy dumped on an island prison for those who were too valuable to be allowed to roam free. Dubbed “The Village”, the former spies don’t have names, but are rather known by their numbers. He’s known as Number 6, with Number 2 being in charge of the never-seen Number 1. The series plays like a psychedelic, cerebral James Bond movie, meaning...

Christopher Nolan took home two Oscars on Sunday night for director and producer of “Oppenheimer.” But his ultimate haul for the period drama was so much bigger.
Nolan’s final payday for the film, which traces the life of titular scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in creating the atomic bomb, is just south of $100 million, according to knowledgeable sources. That figure represents a combination of salary, backend compensation, box-office escalators and a bonus for his twin Academy Awards. A representative for the filmmaker didn’t respond to a request for comment.
The Universal film — which nabbed seven Oscars total, including trophies for actor Cillian Murphy and supporting actor Robert Downey Jr. — was made on a budget of $100 million. After its release on July 19, becoming half of the one-two “Barbenheimer” punch, the film earned $958 million worldwide, a mammoth sum considering “Oppenheimer’s” R rating and three-hour running time. The success of "The Spy Who Loved Me" was crucial for the James Bond franchise to continue, and set a high bar for future entries. Richard Kiel's Jaws in "The Spy Who Loved Me" was inspired by his previous role as Reace in the movie "Silver Streak." Kiel played two more versions of Jaws in other movies after "Moonraker," including "Inspector Gadget" and "Aces Go Places 3."
Possibly the most memorable henchman in the James Bond series made his debut in a completely unrelated action movie. The '70s was a turning point for the James Bond movies. Sean Connery officially bowed out from the Eon series with Diamonds Are Forever, with Roger Moore inheriting the role. Moore brought a more comedic energy to the character, though the likes of The Man with the Golden Gun still saw him trying to inject some of Connery's machismo in certain scenes.

There’s no question that the James Bond film franchise – the second longest-running such series in cinema history after Godzilla – comes with certain expectations in the minds of viewers. We can predict, mostly like clockwork, that 007 will wear a tux at some point in every film, he will bed at least one or more beautiful women, he’ll drive an Aston Martin (or some other high-end vehicle), and that he’ll have one polite conversation with the villain before the shooting really starts. There will also be a surreal, psychedelic credits sequence, often a big action scene before the credits, and so on.
But all those iconic trademarks of the Bond film franchise didn’t happen overnight. They were gradually introduced, especially in the early films, with some of them springing from the original Ian Fleming books and others invented by the filmmakers who adapted them. Some have remained virtually the same since their inception,...

Fans of "Futurama" might have noticed the Number 9 Man early on. He was a bald man with mauve skin and a grey beard wearing a long white nightshirt with the number 9 emblazoned on it. He could be seen in backgrounds and crowd scenes, yet another unusual feature in the bizarro, alien-riddled "Futurama" landscape. His number 9 was a mystery, and the character didn't have any lines or significant part to play until the 2009 "Futurama" movie "Into the Wild Green Yonder." Sci-fi fans might have posited (as this author did) that the Number 9 Man was a reference to the classic 1967 sci-fi series "The Prisoner," wherein Patrick McGoohan plays an ex-spy who was unexpectedly imprisoned in a bizarre carnival town and rechristened Number 6.
While "Futurama" co-creators David X. Cohen and Matt Groening would likely be flattered by the comparison to "The Prisoner" -- they are undoubtedly fans -- it seems that the Number...

The deceptively unassuming figure of Los Angeles homicide detective Lieutenant Columbo (Peter Falk), with his rumpled raincoat, cheap cigars, and seeming absentmindedness, might not call to mind the sprawling existentialist novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky. But Columbo’s ancestry can be traced all the way back to Porfiry Petrovich, the pesky, psychologically attuned investigator in Crime and Punishment.
Like that literary classic, the show that shares Columbo’s name functions as an inverted detective story, not so much a whodunit as a howcatchem. In each episode, we spend time with the murderer, soak up their milieu, and witness the commission of the crime. Only then does Columbo make his entrance onto the scene. From there, it’s an escalating battle of nerves between the dogged detective and the initially arrogant murderer.

Not so long ago, the only Australian TV shows imported by the UK and US were soaps and the odd kids’ series. Neighbours, Home & Away, Prisoner: Cell Block H, Heartbreak High, and child trauma factory Round the Twist went overseas, but not much else.
It didn’t make for a very complete picture. 30 years ago, if you’d asked a British person to conjure up Australia based solely on its available TV output, they’d have pictured a land of bait shops, haunted lighthouses, prison wings, and cul de sacs where good neighbours become good friends. Ask one now, and thanks to streaming, it’d be a much broader church, based on viewing comedies, thrillers, dramas, detective shows and more.

Compared to films where the protagonist survives, the most incredible war movies that killed the hero examine heroism and mortality from a decidedly different angle. The death of a hero only gives more meaning to their life, and historically, true heroism and death are often inseprable. On the other hand, any death is already tragic, but death is especially heavy when it happens to the hero whom viewers hoped would survive.
From the most historically accurate war movies to highly dramatized and entirely fictional cinematic portrayals of war, there's no shortage of incredible war movies that killed the hero. Typically, war films where the hero dies result in the said sacrifices enabling a greater purpose, allowing the slain heroes to live beyond their natural lives. There are also war movies that kill the protagonist in the darkest of circumstances, a common plot device among films with overarching anti-war themes and messages.

While Christopher Nolan once wanted to remake a cult classic ‘60s series, this costly movie mistake could have sent back his career. Christopher Nolan’s filmography is more diverse than some of his detractors give him credit for. While the director might be best known for cerebral sci-fi projects like Interstellar, Tenet, and Inception (as well as his influential Dark Knight trilogy), these are not the only projects that the helmer has worked on. Nolan’s early movies Following, Insomnia, and Memento are all dark, propulsive psychological thrillers, while Dunkirk is a straightforward war movie. Meanwhile, 2006's underrated The Prestige artfully blends period drama, mystery, and even some sci-fi in its tough-to-categorize story.
However, this doesn’t mean that Nolan has not been tempted to play to his strengths. One of Christopher Nolan’s unmade movies was a proposed 2009 remake of The Prisoner, Patrick McGoohan’s famous ‘60s mystery series.

Unlike other directors, Christopher Nolan doesn't have many undeveloped projects, but his next movie absolutely has to be his canceled 2009 project, The Prisoner. In 2010, Warner Bros. released one of the most original and inventive sci-fi action movies of the 21st century, Nolan's Inception. The movie has become a classic, as it is #14 on IMDb Top 250 list, and its ending is theorized over endlessly. However, Before Nolan directed Inception, he had to choose between making the 2010 movie and another project he was interested in. Inception is a mind-warping and revelatory experience in terms of both narrative and envelope-pushing action sequences, but the alternative could have been better still.

War is a living nightmare, wreaking its destruction on innocent lives and civilizations. It casts deep wounds that shape our history, present circumstances, and potential prospects for the future.
War has been a central theme in all of human history since its inception. It inspires both captivation and terror, with stories of bravery, resilience, and courage, as well as violence and death. It is the peak of danger – where any semblance of safety or security ceases to exist for those who fight. All that remains are humanity’s yearning for survival against insurmountable odds.
Hollywood has no shortage of war films meant to both awe and educate. Some promote the best humanity can offer as people come together for a common cause. Others reveal the horrific truth behind conflict’s brutality and man’s capacity for harm on an unimaginable scale.

Back when I worked a desk job, I always looked forward to my business trips to the UK. It was great to have a little jolly on the company's tab and a few days off from regular dad duty. I couldn't wait for that big comfy hotel bed all to myself and get some solid sleep without kids waking me up in the middle of the night.
That was the theory, anyway. When I actually got into that big comfy hotel bed, I couldn't sleep at all. It was just too uncannily quiet and it felt so weird being the only person in the room. So instead of catching up on some sleep, I'd return to my family even more knackered than before.
I faced a similar problem when I separated from my partner and moved out last October. Sleeping by myself again proved a bit tricky after 18 years of living with someone.

If you’re a film fanatic, one book that’s absolutely worth checking out is Quentin Tarantino’s Cinema Speculation (buy it here). On the brilliant Video Archives podcast (which you really should be listening to), Tarantino downplays the autobiographical nature of the book, which is mostly about his reactions to the films that were seminal to him as a child of the seventies. But, along with the film analysis, there’s a lot of interesting, autobiographical material that adds up to a nostalgic depiction of a young film fan coming of age. For a lot of us, it’s tough not to relate.
With that in mind, Tarantino’s formative films are likely different than the ones from those of us who grew up a generation or so later, but every single movie that he mentions is well worth seeking out. Here are five to get started with:

The role of James Bond has been officially and canonically played to date by just six actors: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig (David Niven and Barry Nelson don’t count as part of the canon). It’s traditionally been one of the most sought-after parts in all of cinema history, so it makes sense that while only those half-dozen stars have filled 007’s shoes over the 60-year course of the franchise, dozens more have tried out for the part and didn’t make the cut.
Although original producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman of Eon Productions (still run to this day by Broccoli’s descendants) always insisted that the character of Bond be English, the role has only been played by three Englishmen to date: Moore, Dalton, and Craig.
