The decision to kick off 9-1-1 Season 8 with a bee-nado and midair plane collision turned out to be one of the greatest feats the notoriously ambitious series has ever accomplished.
The three-part opening emergency had a little bit of everything.
It came to an emotionally charged and action-filled end during 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 3, when Athena Grant, with the help of devoted hubby Bobby Nash, landed a plane on the Los Angeles freeway.
(Disney/Kevin Estrada)
The hour was a showcase for Angela Bassett and Peter Krause, who continue to build upon the legend that is super-couple Bathena. And coming out of the moving hour, we had to talk to Krause about it.
Chatting with Peter Krause is guaranteed to leave you with a smile.

John Wayne was a humbled man early in the 1960s. His passion project, "The Alamo," had fallen well short of box office expectations in 1961. An epic Western about the siege of the basement-less San Antonio mission, Wayne directed the film and took its failure personally. He didn't need a hit; even at his lowest point in the 1970s, a Wayne picture at a certain budget level was an automatic greenlight. Still, Wayne was a prideful man who actively tended to his legacy; he was mindful of his fan base, and sought their approval. So Wayne came charging out of his corner in 1962, and knocked out every last naysayer with Howard Hawks' "Hatari!," "How the West Was Won," "The Longest Day" and John Ford's "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance."
The Ford movie could've been Wayne's Western swan song, but a rifle-toting Wayne astride a horse still held commercial appeal,...

On Dec. 16, 1974, 20th-Fox and Warner Bros. unveiled in theaters what would become a landmark disaster movie: The 170-minute, John Guillermin-directed Towering Inferno. The movie, which took in $116 million domestically at the time, tops The Hollywood Reporter’s list of greatest disaster movies of all time. THR’s original review of the feature is below:
Movie technology is the star of this awesome Irwin Allen production, a formula disaster picture made into an event by the sheer size of its inflating production values. More ordeal than entertainment, it overwhelms the spectator like a bully playing on the fears of a society trapped in its own burning affluence.
Since the screenplay by Stirling Silliphant has nothing new to say (the “insanity” of building skyscrapers is dealt with in Earthquake), and the general doomsday appeal of the disaster genre has already been established, The Towering Inferno‘s appeal lies entirely in immediate visceral reactions.

Directed by Doug Trumbull, 1983 sci-fi thriller Brainstorm could have been deleted as an insurance write-off – but then a London bank intervened.
When Warner Bros announced its plans to effectively delete the films Batgirl, Scoob 2 and Coyote Vs Acme, the reaction was one of outrage. Studios destroying films as a tax write-off is nothing new, however: on the 21st June 1933, the Charlie Chaplin film A Woman Of The Sea (previously called Sea Gulls) was burned on the steps of Chaplin’s own studio. The five witnesses who saw the negative go up in flames then signed a letter confirming that the film had been lost to history.
A film directed and produced by one of the most important visual effects pioneers of the 20th century almost suffered a similar fate. Brainstorm, which went into production in the early 1980s, was directed by Doug Trumbull and featured a superb cast, including Christopher Walken,...

Natalie Wood was the former child actress who racked up three Oscar nominations before she was 25, Wood’s life ended in a tragedy that often overshadows her movie career. Yet many of her titles remain classics, so let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1938 in San Francisco, Wood snagged her first starring role when she was just nine years old in the holiday classic “Miracle on 34th Street” (1947), playing a precocious girl who tugs on Santa Claus’ beard. She earned her first Oscar nomination when she was 17 for the juvenile delinquent drama “Rebel Without a Cause” (Best Supporting Actress in 1955), which made an icon out of James Dean, who died before its release. Wood added two more Best Actress bids to her resume with the romantic melodramas “Splendor in the Grass” (1961) and “Love with the Proper Stranger” (1963).

It was only appropriate that the 1,000th episode of the NCISverse aired on the Mother Ship.
While NCIS Season 21 Episode 7 didn't live up to all the hype (what could have?), it was still enjoyable and well-constructed.
It also skillfully drew upon NCIS's long history, going back 21 seasons.
The spotlight fell on Rocky Carroll's Director Vance, who has been too close to becoming a recurring character in recent seasons.
The storyline hearkened back to one of Vance's shining emotional moments when his wife Jackie was killed during an assassination attempt on Eli David on NCIS Season 10 Episode 11.
As expected, that event had lasting repercussions on the Vance family.
Kayla followed her father's lead and became an NCIS agent afloat.
Jared, who was closer to Jackie, had been adrift since then, never committing to anything in Leon's mind.

NCIS star Michael Weatherly lasted on the long-running procedural for 13 seasons before leaving the show. Afterward, the actor would star in another network series Bull. However, Bull wasn’t the kind of tv show Weatherly thought he’d ever find himself in again.
How Michael Weatherly ended up in ‘Bull’ after doing ‘NCIS’ Michael Weatherly | Toni Anne Barson/WireImage
Weatherly had a long run on NCIS before deciding to call it quits. There was no controversy involved in his departure. Rather, after so many years of playing Tony Dinozzo, he was ready to do something different. This would lead him towards a completely different series in CBS’ Bull. There, Weatherly played psychologist Jason Bull, who was the head of a consulting firm that would choose juries for high-profile trials.

“It is with great sadness that we are sharing the news that Shirley Anne Field passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 10, surrounded by her family and friends,” a spokesperson announced.
“Shirley Anne will be greatly missed and remembered for her unbreakable spirit and her amazing legacy spanning more than five decades on stage and screen.”
For her first Hollywood film, Field passed up John Schlesinger’s A Kind of Loving to star opposite Steve McQueen and Robert Wagner in the World War II drama The War Lover (1962). It was a decision she would regret, she explained in a 2009 interview.

Eddie Merrins, the gentlemanly golf pro at the Bel-Air Country Club who taught the game to the likes of Bing Crosby, Ringo Starr, George C. Scott, Dean Martin, Celine Dion and Jack Nicholson, has died. He was 91.
Merrins died Wednesday after a long illness, according to UCLA, where he coached for 14 years. His son Michael had launched a GoFundMe campaign this year to help the family with expenses.
Nicknamed “The Little Pro,” the 5-foot-7 Mississippi native played on the PGA Tour before serving as Bel-Air’s head pro from 1962 until he was asked to step aside in 2003. However, he remained a beloved fixture at the fabled club as pro emeritus in a jacket/sweater, tie and white driving cap.
Remarkably, Bel Air, which opened in 1925, has had only three head pros: Joe Novak, Merrins and now Dave Podas.

If there were any concerns NCIS was running out of steam without Mark Harmon, NCIS Season 20 should have washed them away.
It perfectly laid the groundwork for NCIS Season 21, which promises to be another must-see chapter of this veteran CBS procedural.
You probably have many questions about the upcoming season, and we've done all the digging so that we can answer them for you.
NCIS Season 21: Is It Happening?
With continued ratings erosion during NCIS Season 20, there were questions about whether the series would face a similar fate to NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans.
Both shows were canceled as their seasons aired, resulting in rush-job series finales that didn't satisfy fans.

Hollywood legend Natalie Wood had a dark prophecy hanging over her head long before her death. A movie star since childhood, Wood was in a series of classics before her life was cut short at 43. But despite a brilliant career, the West Side Story star had a troubling private life. Her mysterious 1981 drowning was even predicted by a psychic, creating a fear of water she never let go of.
Natalie Wood’s mother pushed her into show business
On the surface, Wood’s arrival on the 1940s scene was a triumph. Her first credited screen role (Tomorrow is Forever) put her opposite influential movie magnate Orson Welles. She was only seven at the time.
Following the success of Tomorrow is Forever, Wood landed the role that would cement her status as a child star. Miracle on 34th Street was one of the most popular movies of 1947. It remains one of Wood’s most famous roles.

The French Alps in VistaVision and Technicolor really sell this inspirational thriller. Spencer Tracy stars is the utterly ethical mountaineer, and young Robert Wagner his venal, verminous, just plain no damn good younger brother. Make that Much younger. Edward Dmytryk directs for big dimensions and strong emotions, and Paramount’s remaster makes the special effects of the mountain climb look good again. It’s a morality tale pitched at grade school level, and one of Tracy’s better late-career pictures. With Anna Kashfi as a plane crash victim deserving of rescue, and William Demarest as a French priest with a Preston Sturges accent.

The "Pink Panther" film series reached its peak silliness in the 1970s and was all the better for it. Come "The Pink Panther Strikes Again," Blake Edwards and Peter Sellers had dropped the usual business of framing Inspector Clouseau's bumbling antics with a wider crime caper and just focused on him and his arch-nemesis, former Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus (Herbert Lom). Dreyfus, having had it up to here after years of Clouseau's ineptitude, builds a vanishing ray and threatens the world with annihilation if the clueless detective isn't assassinated.
You can see the jokes coming from a mile away, but it hardly matters when you have a comic talent like Sellers delivering the gags. This is the period when all the elements of Clouseau that literally had me rolling on the floor laughing as a kid were cranked up to epic proportions; his penchant for zany disguises; the apartment-trashing fights...

Long before Harry Styles was being criticized left and right for his work in the new thriller "Don't Worry Darling," he was being compared to every iconic musician in the book — so clearly, he's no stranger to being analogized among his contemporaries and influences alike.
But from a film standpoint, he can be analyzed just as well. In fact, his movie career is starting to take a page or two from the books of the singer-actor hybrids that came before him, namely Elvis Presley, Madonna, Frank Sinatra, Cher, and even Sting. Each of these iconic performers started their acting careers in the same way as Styles did: in a relatively small supporting role. From there, they forged ahead to successful, and sometimes not so successful, movie careers.

This weekend, Harry Styles will participate in a long and storied Hollywood tradition that includes Frank Sinatra in “Higher and Higher,” Elvis Presley in “Love Me Tender,” Madonna in “Desperately Seeking Susan,” Cher in “Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean” and Sting in “Quadrophenia.” Each was an established pop-music icon who began a film career with a comparatively humble role.
It’s one context among the many for anticipating this weekend’s performance of “Don’t Worry Darling” (Warner Bros.). Olivia Wilde’s second feature (after her well-received “Booksmart”) is an original R-rated thriller starring Styles and Florence Pugh as a married couple in strange circumstances. Like last week’s “The Woman King” (Sony), it is a mid-budget original story with a female director with the chance to reassert the value of non-franchise films.

Dr. Evil. Fembots. Mini-Me. You’re probably a fan of the Austin Powers movies if these names mean anything. The films were produced and written by Mike Myers, who also starred as the title character and Dr. Evil.
The franchise parodies numerous films and characters, including the James Bond series and Jason King. It also incorporates various other elements of popular culture, following a British spy’s quest to bring his nemesis down.
The movies are filled with humor, action, and references to pop culture, making them timeless classics. If you want to watch the Austin Powers movies in order, you’ve come to the right place. There are three Austin Powers Movies; the first film in the Austin Powers series was produced by Mike Myers, Demi Moore, Jennifer Todd, and Suzanne Todd. It’s 1997 all over again, as the cast of “Austin Powers” has reunited for a new Super Bowl spot set to air during the Big Game on Sunday. Mike Myers reprises his iconic role from the comedy franchise in a commercial for Gm alongside Seth Green as Scott, Mindy Sterling as Frau Farbissina and Rob Lowe as the younger version of Number 2 from the 1999 sequel “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me”.
The commercial finds Dr. Evil and Co. taking over General Motors, with a heavy emphasis on reducing carbon emissions. The ad brings back the death chair gag from the first film, as Dr. Evil considers killing his son as he continues to annoy him – only for Frau Farbissina to intervene. Scott, meanwhile, reveals that he has a baby, which Dr. Evil immediately dubs “Baby Me.”

Walter Mirisch’s slam-bang, eardrum-pounding Sensurround stock footage orgy for the Centennial Year gathers an impressive lineup of big stars to celebrate the U.S. Navy’s biggest aircraft carrier battle: Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Toshiro Mifune. Director Jack Smight manages the talky, exposition-laden account of a sprawling, complicated battle rather well, at least in terms of clarity. What is unwatchable pan-scanned on TV isn’t half bad for fans of big-scale war movies. Pi gives us an approximation of Sensurround (I think), and also John Ford’s short subject The Battle of Midway from 1942.

Mort Sahl, the acerbic comic whose pioneering style paved the way for such boundary-breaking comedians as Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor and George Carlin, died Tuesday at his home in Mill Valley, CA. He was 94.
A friend confirmed his death to The New York Times.

Known for his topical social commentary, he boldly skewered politicians and others in a harsh but clean stand-up act. He hosted the first Grammy Awards in 1959, co-hosted the 1959 Academy Awards and a year later became the first comedian featured to be featured on the cover of Time magazine. He also guest-hosted The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson multiple times during the 1960s.
Born on May 11, 1927, in Montreal, Sahl’s family moved to Los Angeles when he was a child. After a stint in the Air Force, he graduated from USC in 1950. By the mid-’50s he was doing stand-up,...

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (L.A.S.D.) is being petitioned to open an inquiry into the 1981 drowning case of Natalie Wood, as an upcoming book claims that there was a cover-up of the circumstances related to her death.
The author of the book has taken legal action to obtain confidential sheriff records, which he said the department to date has refused to share.
Author Samuel A. Perroni, a retired federal prosecutor and Arkansas trial lawyer, brought the petition Thursday in L.A. Superior Court against the L.A.S.D. and Sheriff Alex Villanueva, seeking the judge’s order directing that the information be turned over.
“Through his work, [Perroni] seeks to inform the public about the circumstances of Ms. Wood’s death,” the petition reads. “Regrettably, respondents have met the petitioner’s requests for records with obstruction and delay.”
The new petition requests access to copies of the L.

There was much curiosity on the part of audiences last summer when it came to every real-life person, event, and location portrayed in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. While much of the discussion was focused on Sharon Tate, as played by Margot Robbie, this fall, a new documentary on another Manson Family victim, Jay Sebring, will arrive.
Jay Sebring….Cutting To The Truth, directed by Sebring’s nephew, Anthony Dimaria, takes a look at the celebrity hairstylist’s life beyond the headlines of being a life cut short and his great influence on a generation of Hollywood stars, from Marlon Brando to Bruce Lee.
Ahead of a September release, the first trailer has arrived, featuring interviews with Quincy Jones, Robert Wagner, Dennis Hopper, Dominick Dunne, and even Quentin Tarantino, who cast Emile Hirsch to play Sebring in his latest film.
See the trailer below with a hat tip to MovieBox.

Authors and (especially) documentary filmmakers have long been fascinated (much as the general public) with the romances of the stars, namely what happens when the gods and goddesses of Hollywood, the modern Olympus, fall in love. Just a few weeks ago HBO premiered an excellent film on the life of actress Natalie Wood, with much of its running time devoted to her marriage(s) to “matinee idol’ Robert Wagner. Their coupling takes its place with other “tinsel town” teams like Bogie and Bacall, Gable and Lombard, and Taylor and Burton. The same holds true in the music industry, and in this new film’s case, the country music kings and queens with Johnny Cash and June Carter very near the top of the list. Their story has already inspired an Oscar-winning “bio-pic” from 2005 Walk The Line. But often in the rush to tell these tales, the former flames, and even future spouses are ignored.

Jim Parsons really knows how to play lecherous and repugnant.
Just take a look at his work as Henry Willson in “Hollywood,” a new Netflix drama from Ryan Murphy. Wilson, a ruthless powerbroker whose clients included Rock Hudson, Lana Turner, Robert Wagner and Tab Hunter, was a sexual predator who preyed on young men trying to make it in show business.
Despite the makeup and fake teeth, hair and eyes, Parsons is far from physically unrecognizable in the role. Still, the actor says he had never felt such “freedom” in front of the camera while portraying Wilson.
“I had a friend watch it. She wrote me and said — and I thought this was very well put — ‘It’s not that it doesn’t look like you. It’s not like anybody would notice that and say, ‘Who the hell is that?’ It’s like you were shot through a spider web covered creepy filter,...

Welcome to this week’s Friday Night SmackDown review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and I saw that new Natalie Wood documentary. Made by her family (Robert’s side with the kids) the film was made to try to discredit Natalie’s sister and the evidence she and others (police included) have presented against Robert Wagner in relation to her murder. What a f—— hatchet job it tried to be, but still failed miserably at. Anyway, Robert Wagner is a —– and SmackDown starts…on Friday.
