It's easy to take for granted the weirdness and shocking nature of the extraterrestrial's lifecycle in Ridley Scott's seminal 1979 horror film "Alien."
In "Alien," John Hurt plays Kane, a crew member of the futuristic space tug Nostromo who finds an outsize, leathery egg while exploring a mysterious alien vessel. The egg opens, and a strange monster -- part lobster, part bladder -- leaps out and grabs his face. He immediately goes comatose. Later, it is discovered that the monster, while still attached to his face, has inserted an unsettling biological tube down his throat. Kane's crewmates are unable to remove the monster from his face; when they pull on it, it begins to strangle Kane with its tail, and when they cut it, it bleeds acid that can eat through metal.
After a spell, the monster drops off Kane's face of its own volition and dies. What happened? It's...

10 Rillington Place, part of a mundane row of apartments in London, was ground zero for one of the most infamous serial killers in England’s history. Richard Attenborough plays John Christie, a ghoul who used his wall space and floorboards to hide his grisly deeds. Directed by Richard Fleischer, the film co-stars John Hurt as the poor chap who took the rap for Christie before justice prevailed. Judy Geeson plays Hurt’s wife.

Director John Sturges’ final feature is a handsome production that fumbles and stumbles in unexpected ways. Michael Caine and especially Donald Sutherland lead an impossible commando mission to kidnap Winston Churchill right from English soil. Tom Mankiewicz’s dialogue is witty but the tone is all over the place. We don’t know whether it’s the script, the direction or the editing that muffs so many potential bravura moments. On the other hand, every scene with Sutherland and Jenny Agutter is gold. [Imprint] gives us both a theatrical cut and a more satisfying extended cut.

Rob Zombie's 2012 film "The Lords of Salem" may be the filmmaker's best. In it, Sheri Moon plays Heidi, a woman living in Salem, Ma, and recovering from drug addiction. She works as a soft-spoken DJ at the local radio station with Ken Foree and Jeff Daniel Phillips. When they play a mysterious rock record on their show — a record that only plays three scary, deep notes over and over — it awakens something inside Heidi. She begins having surreal visions of Satan. The visions are also, perhaps, being encouraged by a trio of women who regularly drink wine and converse loudly in her apartment building.
Eventually, it will be revealed that the record was a tool by the town's local Satanists (!) used to hypnotize the town's women into remembering their former lives as the woman tortured and killed in Salem generations ago. Satan, then, becomes a tool for feminist vengeance.

Peter Hall’s 1969 drama proved Britain’s Kitchen Sink cinema was alive and well at the end of the sixties—though by then the focus was more on bedsheets than tablecloths. Rod Steiger plays a salesman working through his mid-life crisis with the help of a treacherous teen played by Judy Geeson. Claire Bloom plays Steiger’s very long-suffering wife. The screenplay was by Andrea Newman and Edna O’ Brien.

Retro-active: The Best From The Cinema Retro Archives

Kino Lorber has released a new DVD edition of John Wayne's late-career detective flick "Brannigan". The 1975 film takes Wayne out of the saddle and deposits him squarely in central London ("The Duke's in London. God Save the Queen!" read the tag line on the film poster.). The "fish-out--of-water" crime thriller concept began with Don Siegel's outstanding "Coogan's Bluff" (1968), which inspired Dennis Weaver's hit rip-off TV series "McCloud". Still, the premise works well with Wayne's tough Chicago Irish cop Jim Brannigan sent to London to extradite a top crime figure, much as Clint Eastwood's Coogan was shipped to New York to bring a criminal back to Arizona. Wayne had gone the detective route the year before in "McQ". He had originally been offered the role of Dirty Harry but correctly assumed his fans would not stand...

The late Sidney Poitier had a career that included some truly game-changing films, including "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" and "In The Heat of the Night". Even his lesser-known works, like the supremely underrated Western "Buck and the Preacher," were notable for how they dealt with the topic of race.
One of Poitier's biggest films, "To Sir, With Love," has him portraying Mark Thackeray, a teacher who takes up work at a school in London's rough-and-tumble East End. Thackeray ends up winning over his students over the course of the film, including Judy Geeson's Pamela Dare. It even gave birth to a whole subgenre of...

To Sir, With Love (1967) is a classroom drama set in London’s working-class East End during the swinging 1960s. It’s a well-scripted, well-acted, and well-directed film of the “good teacher vs unruly students” subgenre. But, more than anything else, To Sir, With Love is a Sidney Poitier film. It’s Poitier’s persona and charisma, his decency and humanity, that shine through in every scene. And, it’s Poitier at the apex of his acting career—In the Heat of the Night and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner were also released that same year. The film has aged surprisingly well, and is still enjoyable to watch. But it’s as an artifact of the Sidney Poitier oeuvre...

Over the holidays, TCM showed one of my favorite movies of all time, 1967’s “To Sir With Love. “ It stars Sidney Poitier as Mark Thackeray from British Guyana who takes a job as a teacher in the East End of London filled rowdy Cockney students who have little interest in their curriculum. Sir, as his class calls him, realizes that what these teens need is a course in how to make a life for themselves in the world outside a classroom.
Eventually, his pupils realize that he has their best interests at heart and they celebrate at a dance before his flock flies off into real world . Seeing a sexy and sweaty Poitier cut a rug by doing the Pony and the Jerk with Judy Geeson’s flirtatious student was just like receiving an extra surprise gift under my tree.

We’ve got a ton of great titles on the docket for this final week of home media releases in August. Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters is hitting various formats on Tuesday, and if you’re looking for some oddball entertainment, The Banana Splits Movie should undoubtedly do the trick. For all you sci-fi fans out there, the classic V miniseries is finally making its way to Blu, and Scream Factory is also giving both The Leech Woman and Fear in the Night the HD treatment as well.

After the groundbreaking horror-sci-fi hybrid success of Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979), several low budget filmmakers decided to add their goo-covered two cents to the discourse; hell, Roger Corman himself cranked out a couple skeezy sci-fi winners in Galaxy of Terror (1981) and Forbidden World (’82). But there’s a nasty little number out of Britain funded with some Hong Kong coin that shouldn’t be dismissed: Inseminoid (1981) decides that Alien should be a straight up slasher in space and we’re all the better for it.
Released in the UK in March, Inseminoid (Aka Horror Planet most everywhere else) had a slow rollout worldwide, with the U.S. not taking it in until November of ’82. Critics mostly hated it of course; the exception across the board being Judy Geeson’s performance. Audiences were more receptive and the film did quite well in the Alien knockoff wars. But after an initial setup that...

When it comes to Rob Zombie as a filmmaker I’ll admit I have something of a soft spot for his work. He knows his horror and never bows down for the constant calls to conform to the politically correct society that seems to dominate the entertainment world now. With the release of 31, the question is, has he managed to pull off another The Devil’s Rejects or is this more of a Halloween 2?
The first thing you’ll notice with the story of 31 is that it is in very familiar territory. A group of carnival employees (including of course Sheri Moon Zombie) are travelling cross-country on Halloween. They are soon kidnapped and are entered into...

BBC One has announced the three-part drama series "Rillington Place" which Bandit Television and Endemol Shine Group will produce. The story is based on a series of murders that took place in the 1940s and 50s in London's Notting Hill area at the infamous No. 10 building on the titular street.
The series unfolds from the viewpoints of three key players - the multiple murderer John Christie, his wife Ethel, and their neighbor Timothy Evans. John murdered at least eight women and was hanged, while Evans was hanged for the murders of his own wife and daughter.
It was later learned Christie killed Evans' wife, Evans was granted a posthumous pardon in 1966 and that miscarriage of justice was said to have been a major contributor to the abolition of capital punishment in Britain.

Over this past weekend, Rob Zombie’s latest genre effort, 31, premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival as part of the Midnight programming slate. Daily Dead had the chance to catch up with both Zombie and his wife, Sheri Moon Zombie, the following day to chat about their latest collaboration.
During our interview, the duo discussed making "grown-up horror", the pros of utilizing some familiar faces from Zombie’s previous films for 31, dealing with criticism and so much more.
Thanks for chatting today guys and congrats on the movie, too. Not only is it really cool to see your evolution as a director over the years, Rob, but it's also really cool to see you, Sheri, change so much throughout all these different films too. I thought Charly was just a lot of fun in 31, and while I'm not going to ruin anything for anybody, that final scene with Richard [Brake] was so great.

31 was undoubtedly made for those of us who have enjoyed Zombie’s work over the years. It may not be as ambitious as The Lords of Salem or as epic as The Devil’s Rejects but, by and large, it’s a ton of blood-soaked fun that gives us real characters to connect with, introduces us to some incredibly twisted assassins and goes for broke at every possible turn.
The story feels like Zombie’s own horror-fied version of The Running Man (with a bit of a Kubrickian flavor to it) and features breakout performances from Richard Brake and Jeff Daniel Phillips. Folks who aren’t into Zombie’s work probably won’t enjoy 31, but any film that gives the amazing Meg Foster the opportunity to wield a chainsaw like a total badass is aces in my book.
