Film and high-end television (Hetv) production spend in the UK hit £5.6bn in 2024, with film production reaching £2.1bn, an increase of 56% on 2023.

The £5.6bn figure doesn’t match the 2022 record of £6.3bn, but is a 31% increase on the Hollywood strike-addled 2023, according to statistics released by the British Film Institute (BFI) today (February 6).

High-end TV production accounted for the lion’s share of the overall spend, reaching almost £3.4bn, an increase of 20% on 2023 and the third highest annual spend since tax relief was introduced in 2013, and 62% of the total spend.

One of the first things that fans tend to point out in Kieran Culkin’s family drama Succession is how hilarious it is. Be it the constant ‘F*ck Offs’ from Brian Cox’s Logan Roy or lead star Jeremy Strong’s cringy rap song about his on-screen father, the show has multiple memorable moments that lend itself to hilarity.

However, the debate is on about whether Succession is a comedy or a drama (or a dramedy). On Thursday, Netflix revealed its full 2025 film slate. The lineup includes long-awaited sequels, high profile originals, future Oscar contenders, and much more.

The biggest new announcements in the slate include the formal announcement of Jay Kelly, three-time Academy Award nominee Noah Baumbach‘s latest film, a “heartbreaking comedy” featuring George Clooney and Adam Sandler in the large ensemble cast; Eddie, a biographical documentary about one of Hollywood’s most elusive stars, Eddie Murphy; and a Charles Manson documentary from Academy Award winner Errol Morris.

These titles join previously announced films including the third installment in Rian Johnson‘s Daniel Craig-led mystery franchise, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery; Guillermo del Toro‘s adaptation of Frankenstein starring Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi; and an as-yet-untitled thriller from Best Director winner Kathryn Bigelow, her first film in eight years.

Everyone loves a good villain. Without scenery-chewing, dastardly antagonists for our heroes to fight, things just aren't much fun. Sometimes villains become cultural icons in their own right, like Michael Meyers from the "Halloween" movies or even Jeremy Irons as Scar in "The Lion King." Of course, one of the greatest villains of them all is Hannibal Lecter. UK Drama School Lamda Opens In New York

Top UK drama school Lamda is opening in the U.S. The institution, which says it is the “world’s oldest drama school,” last week launched a New York facility with U.S. sister org American Friends of Lamda (Aflamda). The facilities will serve as a hub for training, innovation, collaboration and education, Lamda said. They were launched at an event Thursday night at the Players’ Club in Manhattan attended by Lamda faculty, alumni and special guests. Aflamda has meanwhile appointed Succession star Brian Cox as its inaugural patron and brought in board members David Beach, Gabby Beans, Baron Kelly and Mary Willis White. The world premiere of a new satirical play about the financial crash of 2008, starring Brian Cox, will open this year’s Edinburgh International Festival.

Make It Happen, written by James Graham (Sherwood, Quiz) and directed by Andrew Panton (Osage County, The Children, A Christmas Carol), artistic director of Dundee Rep Theatre, will mark the return of Succession star Cox to the Scottish stage for the first time in 10 years.

Make It Happen will open the annual arts fest in the Scottish capital and run for a week at the Festival Theatre from Aug. 1 to 9.

Set in Edinburgh, the play sees Cox portray Adam Smith, the pioneering Scottish philosopher and economist, and the ghost of fiscal past. Graham’s writing dives into the “unchecked growth, spiralling greed and nail-biting hubris that brought the world’s economy to its knees,” a plot synopsis read.

The new parody video begins a tracking shot of a neighbourhood that looks identical to the Desperate Housewives area, with a French voiceover saying, “since Bree Van de Kamp had moved to Wisteria Lille, she had secretly developed an addiction to TV series.” The character is then seen with a trademark wine in one hand and a remote control in the other.

After delivering Succession, one of the most compelling and talked-about shows in recent memory, the show’s creator, Jesse Armstrong, is ready to tackle his next project at HBO. According to Deadline, Jesse Armstong’s next project is a film about the ongoing international financial crisis, not a television series. Based on Armstrong’s original idea, the untitled project is getting set up at HBO Films.

Jesse Armstong is writing and executive producing the film alongside Frank Rich. Plot specifics remain a mystery, though Deadline says the untitled film could revolve around four friends who meet up during the crippling events of an ongoing international financial crisis. The project is moving fast, likely to capitalize on Succession‘s popularity, which ended its final season on May 28, 2023. Wow! Has it really been that long? Dag, yo. As long as everyone’s schedules align, production could begin later this year.

Astonishingly, Succession amassed 75 Emmy nominations and 19 wins.

Arrival is a sci-fi drama film directed by Denis Villeneuve from a screenplay by Eric Heisserer. Based on the 1998 short story titled Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang, the 2016 film follows Louise Banks, a linguistic expert tasked with interpreting the language of aliens who have come to Earth in a giant spaceship.

Based on Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel, The Electric State takes place in an alternate version of the 1990s, after a failed robot uprising.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will be available on digital on December 27th after just two weeks in theaters. That’s certainly a quick turnaround, but given how poorly the animated movie has performed, it’s not surprising.

The War of the Rohirrim will be available on digital platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and more. The film will continue playing in theaters, but with all the heavy competition from Wicked: Part One, Moana 2, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, I can’t imagine the remaining screens will last long. The War of the Rohirrim has grossed just $15.4 million on a budget of $30 million.
