Big names, high concepts, and crowd-pleasing thrills are the order of the day at this year’s European Film Market, where commercial fare is dominating over the usual arthouse prestige plays, reflecting an industry uncertain of the future of the theatrical business in the post-covid world. Action, horror, and comedy are leading the charge, with star-driven projects like Guy Ritchie’s Wife & Dog (Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike), Mary Bronstein’s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You (Rose Byrne, Conan O’Brien, A$AP Rocky), and Ernest Dickerson’s untitled hitman thriller (Samuel L. Jackson, Daveed Diggs) among the titles generating early buzz.
Genre filmmakers are also stepping up in a big way, with The Raid’s Iko Uwais launching a new production/sales outfit in Berlin for his brand of martial-arts madness, and horror entries like Bad Boy — starring Ke Huy Quan and Lili Reinhart — and the body-horror thriller...

During an interview, series creator Jesse Armstrong was asked about the show’s approach to its characters. Despite being set in the world of some of the richest people, the series refrained from depicting the Roys enjoying their wealth. Armstrong had a pretty good reason for this particular approach and here is what he had to say about the Roy family’s relationship with money.

One of the first things that fans tend to point out in Kieran Culkin’s family drama Succession is how hilarious it is. Be it the constant ‘F*ck Offs’ from Brian Cox’s Logan Roy or lead star Jeremy Strong’s cringy rap song about his on-screen father, the show has multiple memorable moments that lend itself to hilarity.
However, the debate is on about whether Succession is a comedy or a drama (or a dramedy). Despite the funny instances, it is not along the same veins as say, Hacks or Abbott Elementary and has more dramatic conflicts than comedic. While fans have been debating this, actor Jeremy Strong reportedly even expressed the same to Culkin.

Everyone loves a good villain. Without scenery-chewing, dastardly antagonists for our heroes to fight, things just aren't much fun. Sometimes villains become cultural icons in their own right, like Michael Meyers from the "Halloween" movies or even Jeremy Irons as Scar in "The Lion King." Of course, one of the greatest villains of them all is Hannibal Lecter. Created by author Thomas Harris, "Hannibal the Cannibal" was the baddie in the novels "Red Dragon" in 1981, "The Silence of the Lambs" in 1988, "Hannibal" in 1999, and "Hannibal Rising" in 2006, and his well-mannered eccentricity and fierce bloodlust makes him as alluring as he is terrifying. These books have since been adapted into several Hannibal Lecter movies and an NBC television series, with four different actors having portrayed the aristocratic Lithuanian serial killer, each with their own unique spin.
But who did it best? No one person cast as the clever cannibal was ever truly bad in the role,...

The world premiere of a new satirical play about the financial crash of 2008, starring Brian Cox, will open this year’s Edinburgh International Festival.
Make It Happen, written by James Graham (Sherwood, Quiz) and directed by Andrew Panton (Osage County, The Children, A Christmas Carol), artistic director of Dundee Rep Theatre, will mark the return of Succession star Cox to the Scottish stage for the first time in 10 years.
Make It Happen will open the annual arts fest in the Scottish capital and run for a week at the Festival Theatre from Aug. 1 to 9.
Set in Edinburgh, the play sees Cox portray Adam Smith, the pioneering Scottish philosopher and economist, and the ghost of fiscal past. Graham’s writing dives into the “unchecked growth, spiralling greed and nail-biting hubris that brought the world’s economy to its knees,” a plot synopsis read.

First came Desperate Housewives and now we’ve got Desperate Lillewives.
Marcia Cross has reprised her iconic role as Bree Van de Kamp from the ABC comedy-drama in another surreal Series Mania promo video, two years after she appeared at the popular French co-production and TV content festival. The fest has made it something of a tradition to release a promo featuring major TV stars in silly scenarios over recent years.
The new parody video begins a tracking shot of a neighbourhood that looks identical to the Desperate Housewives area, with a French voiceover saying, “since Bree Van de Kamp had moved to Wisteria Lille, she had secretly developed an addiction to TV series.” The character is then seen with a trademark wine in one hand and a remote control in the other.

After delivering Succession, one of the most compelling and talked-about shows in recent memory, the show’s creator, Jesse Armstrong, is ready to tackle his next project at HBO. According to Deadline, Jesse Armstong’s next project is a film about the ongoing international financial crisis, not a television series. Based on Armstrong’s original idea, the untitled project is getting set up at HBO Films.
Jesse Armstong is writing and executive producing the film alongside Frank Rich. Plot specifics remain a mystery, though Deadline says the untitled film could revolve around four friends who meet up during the crippling events of an ongoing international financial crisis. The project is moving fast, likely to capitalize on Succession‘s popularity, which ended its final season on May 28, 2023. Wow! Has it really been that long? Dag, yo. As long as everyone’s schedules align, production could begin later this year.
Astonishingly, Succession amassed 75 Emmy nominations and 19 wins.

One of the lavish mansions showcased on HBO’s Succession has reportedly burnt down in the Palisades Fire that has now ravaged over 22,000 acres in the affluent beachside neighborhood.
According to the Daily Mail — which has published before-and-after photos of the sprawling 18-bedroom, 6-bathroom home — the property was featured in the fourth and final season of the dramedy, serving as a luxury mainstay for the Roy siblings, played by Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook.
Scooped up by Luminar Technologies CEO Austin Russell for $83 million in 2021, the San Onofre estate was perched atop a one-acre promontory in the Santa Monica Mountains. The opening minutes of Succession Season 4 prominently feature the mega-mansion’s winding driveway, infinity pool and breathtaking views.
While the Emmy-winning series does not make clear to whom the home belongs, the trio are there to plan out their next moves following the Season 3 finale, which left them...

Irish actor Colm Meaney (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, In the Land of Saints & Sinners) will receive the Irish Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement for his “outstanding contribution to the Irish and international screen industry,” the Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) said Friday.
“To say I was surprised when I got the news that IFTA wanted to give me this award would be an understatement. I was truly shocked,” Meaney said. “To be asked to join this long list of very illustrious previous recipients is a huge honor, and I’m thrilled and looking forward to a good night in Dublin.”
IFTA lauded his career, spanning five decades, noting that it has seen him “work with renowned filmmakers, including John Huston, Robert Redford, Michael Mann, Jim Sheridan, Neil Jordan, Alan Parker, Warren Beatty and Ron Howard, and alongside actors such as Al Pacino,...

Frasier (1993-2003) is a cerebral sitcom starring Kelsey Grammer as popular Seattle radio psychiatrist, Dr. Frasier Crane, and it has several great season finales. When Frasier returns to his hometown in Washington state, his father, Martin Crane (John Mahoney), moves in with him, creating endless tension between the two. To top things off, Frasier’s brother, Niles (David Hyde Pierce), promptly falls hopelessly in love with their disabled father’s caregiver, Daphne Moon (Jane Leeves).
The Crane family antics have been a beloved mainstay of the sitcom genre for the past 32 years. This 90s comedy show was recently resurrected in the 2023 Frasier reboot, although the remake was greeted with less critical acclaim. Over the course of 10 years on the air, the original Frasier show created big shoes to fill with its interplay of screwball comedy and universally relatable themes. Jeremey Strong appeared to take aim at two former costars who have recently expressed hesitations about his acting method.
The 46-year-old Succession star has previously addressed his extreme dedication to his roles. Meanwhile, costars have dissed it over the years. One even went as far as to refer to his approach as “f-cking annoying.”
In recent interview, Jeremy‘s Succession costars Kieran Culkin and Brian Cox both had something to say about the star. Jeremy addressed his own critics in response.

While participating in Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, Kieran mentioned Jeremy while saying that he disagreed with actors who refer to themselves as storytellers.
Brian told The Guardian that Jeremy “would be an even better actor if he just got rid of that.”
It appears that Jeremy indirectly responded while speaking with Deadline.

Brian Cox opens up about his regret over calling Johnny Depp overrated (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The Succession star, Brian Cox, blasted Depp’s Edward Scissorhands role, but now admits he went too hard and wishes he could take it back.
“I mean, ‘Edward Scissorhands.’ Let’s face it, if you come on with hands like that and pale, scarred-face make-up, you don’t have to do anything. And he didn’t. And subsequently, he’s done even less,” Cox wrote. Ouch.
But when asked about those words on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Cox couldn’t help but roll his eyes at his younger, more impulsive self. Rocking a jazzy floral shirt (of course), he shrugged and admitted, “I just thought I was being a bit harsh. You know what it’s like, you go for the easy joke. And I went for the easy joke.” Classic case of a well-intentioned roast gone too far,...

The Danish star of the BBC’s Dracula, Ruben Östlund’s The Square and the new historical action-adventure William Tell is here to answer your questions
Claes Bang only became an actor by chance, after he was persuaded to join a production of Hair at high school in Denmark. Claes Bang only became an actor by chance, after he was persuaded to join a production of Hair at high school in Denmark. He was scared to apply to drama school. “I was sure they would say: ‘Thank you very much for coming, but no thanks,’” he says. War is hell, and it’s been that way for a very long time. However, when it comes to moviemaking, many filmmakers have difficulty portraying large scale combat as anything but thrilling. This accidental glorification of collective violence is especially true when it comes to epic tales of historical warfare, with films like Braveheart and even Excalibur tending to shy away from the more horrific side of dark age violence.
And as someone who enjoys less glamorized takes on history, today I’d like to look back on Jonathan English’s underappreciated historical action film Ironclad, a 2011 flick that – while not really historically accurate – provides a disturbingly intimate view of a time when combat meant having to look your opponent in the eyes as your cleave their head in half and bathe in their fresh, steaming blood.

Horror and the Academy Awards are famously (and unfortunately) strange bedfellows. Which is strange on the face of it, because even a casual film lover can recognize the huge importance the horror genre has to the medium. So many of Hollywood's most accomplished filmmakers got their start in horror, so many technical innovations were made because of horror movies, and the very grammar of cinema would not be as advanced as it's become without the horror genre. To disregard horror or remove it from any study of the medium is to fundamentally misunderstand cinema, full stop.
If all of that is common knowledge, then why does horror continue to be treated so poorly by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences? The reasons for this are too lengthy and varied to go into detail here, suffice to say that it has to do with an amalgam of antiquated (re:...

The films of Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos aren't for everyone. They're aggressively uncomfortable, poking and prodding the audience with all manner of shocking content and even more shocking ways of presenting it, but there is a lot to love in his deliciously disturbing filmography. Whether he's working from a screenplay he developed with frequent collaborator Efthimis Filippou or one written by "The Great" creator Tony McNamara, Lanthimos manages to inject his films with his unique vision, using characters that seem totally inhuman to force the audience to contemplate their own humanity. This can lead to his films being a little confusing, and that includes his 2017 thriller "The Killing of a Sacred Deer."
"The Killing of a Sacred Deer" stars Colin Farrell as heart surgeon Steven Murphy, who develops a bizarre relationship with 16-year-old Martin Lang (Barry Keoghan), whose father died on Steven's operating table. Martin begins to insert himself into the Murphy family,...

While the franchise's on-screen future remains unclear, an underrated Hannibal Lecter adaptation is getting a new streaming home. Based on Thomas Harris' four novels centering on the cannibalistic serial killer, the on-screen journey of the character began in 1986's Manhunter, written and directed by Michael Mann and starring Brian Cox as the iconic killer. Primarily based on the first novel, Red Dragon, the movie failed at the box office and initially garnered mixed reviews, but has gone on to be considered a cult classic.
Arguably, the adaptation that put the franchise on the map was the Anthony Hopkins-led The Silence of the Lambs, one of the few horror movies to get Oscars recognition, winning the big five awards while being nominated for an additional two. Hopkins would carry on the role of Lecter with the 2001 sequel Hannibal, which was a commercial hit in spite of its critical dismissal, and the 2002 prequel Red Dragon,...

It has been over 20 years since Peter Jackson’s adaptations of The Lord of the Rings were all released onto the big-screen. With box office takings that reach almost $3 billion worldwide, 17 Academy Award wins, and extended edition marathons which repeatedly show at cinemas, it is an understatement to call this adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s novels a success.
Ever since, there have been repeated attempts to recapture the success of that massively influential trilogy. Peter Jackson returned to direct a trilogy adaptation of The Hobbit, which may have replicated the financial success but fell short everywhere else. Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Chris Pratt and Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown explore the world of rebellious robots in the trailer for The Electric State, a sci-fi adventure from Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame). Based on Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel, The Electric State takes place in an alternate version of the 1990s, after a failed robot uprising.
In addition to Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown, the film stars Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Stanley Tucci (Conclave), Jason Alexander (Seinfeld), Giancarlo Esposito (Megalopolis), and Woody Norman (The Last Voyage of the Demeter). Woody Harrelson (Suncoast), Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Brave New World), Brian Cox (Succession), and Jenny Slate (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) provide voices of the robots.

Need something new to watch on Netflix? With the holidays upon us, no doubt folks are about to do some much deserved clocking out of work and settling in for streaming hours. Netflix has a surprisingly short supply of new movies this month, with less than 10 archival films announced to arrive on the first (when the bulk of new titles are usually added) and a slighter-than-usual handful of originals too. Not to worry, we were still able to handpick five must-watch titles among the bunch, so here’s this month’s curated list of the best new movies on Netflix right now.

Brian Cox recalls working with Steven Seagal on a 1996 action comedy with an 11% Rotten Tomatoes score. The Scottish actor is best known to modern audiences as Logan Roy from HBO's Succession, receiving three Emmy nominations for his portrayal of the aging and brash patriarch and media mogul. However, as a classically trained Shakespearean actor, Cox has also appeared in many movies from the 1980s to the 2010s as a character actor, including Manhunter, Braveheart, The Boxer, The Rookie, Troy, Adaptation, X2, and Churchill.
Over his career, Cox has been outspoken about his co-stars and fellow actors, famously and frequently voicing his disapproval of his co-star Jeremy Strong's method acting on the set of Succession. He also recently discussed his co-star Daniel Day-Lewis' method acting on the 1997 film The Boxer, calling his approach "a little off-putting." Cox also recently called out the Academy Awards for honoring Gary Oldman's performance...

The majority of classic Christmas movies are American, but Britain has also produced a few holiday heartwarmers over the years. The most obvious example is Love Actually, which often features in conversations about the very best Christmas movies, but there are many more British Christmas movies, even if they don't all have big international audiences. Many of these Christmas movies feature famous faces from Hollywood blockbusters.
The worst Christmas movies are often accused of cheap sentimentality, but this is something that British movies tend to avoid, simply because there isn't the same abundance of Christmas content each year. The few that have any kind of lasting relevance tend to offer something different to American Christmas movies, either because they focus on British holiday traditions or because they have quirky British humor.

Kieran Culkin’s first professional acting gig was A Real Pain, to say the least.
On a new episode of Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett’s Smartless podcast, the Succession star was prompted to discuss his inaugural filming experience at age 6 — a commercial helmed by someone who clearly didn’t know how to work with children.
“The concept was, I’m standing in front of a chalkboard with chalk in my hand and I don’t know how to solve the easy thing in front of me and the kids in the class are supposed to be calling me dummy and stupid and all that,” he said of the ad, which had “something to do with learning disabilities.”

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will be available on digital on December 27th after just two weeks in theaters. That’s certainly a quick turnaround, but given how poorly the animated movie has performed, it’s not surprising.
The War of the Rohirrim will be available on digital platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and more. The film will continue playing in theaters, but with all the heavy competition from Wicked: Part One, Moana 2, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, I can’t imagine the remaining screens will last long. The War of the Rohirrim has grossed just $15.4 million on a budget of $30 million.

Succession took the television industry by storm with its unique storyline and engrossing character. Played by Brian Cox, the patriarch of the Roy family had to choose between his messed-up children and figure out who’d be the one to take over the family business. Jeremy Strong plays the role of Kendall Roy, the eldest child from Logan Roy’s second marriage. Kendall strives to prove his worth to his father as he tries to overcome the downfalls of his own life.

In a candid interview with the Anime New Network, Cox shared how his upbringing, experiences, and theatrical background all influenced his portrayal of Helm, making this role personal and close to his heart.

Lord of the Rings has had a comeback in recent years in mainstream Hollywood. Still trying to capture the success of Peter Jackson’s first trilogy, attempts at adapting Tolkien’s seminal epic fantasy world continue, with the latest efforts taking to animation in the form of The War of the Rohirrim.

If you are a fan of fantasy anime set in an ancient period, then Yona of the Dawn would definitely be one of the many titles that would be on the long list of the genre. The series was much more than a fantasy series, where the series was fairly popular but not enough to receive mainstream fame.

With a wide variety of characters and a refreshing take on harem, the title has left a strong impression on its viewers. However, the fame and fan following are not enough for the Shoujo anime to receive a second season.
It has been a decade, and the followers are still optimistic that a sequel season will take place. Sadly, that will not be the case because of how it had mistakenly advertised itself among the viewers.

The $300m Russo brothers Netflix film The Electric State has spent serious money on some things. Wigs very much included.
Across 103 very expensive seconds, Netflix has pulled back the curtain on its most costly movie of all time: The Electric State. With a bill in excess of $300m, before marketing, it’s arguably the last massive gamble of this size the streaming giant will undertake.
In case you haven’t seen it yet, here’s the new trailer:
Directed by the Russo brothers, before they head back to the relative safety of Avengers movies, the film has an all-star cast, led by Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown. Also on the payroll are Ke Huy Quan, Jason Alexander, Woody Norman, with Giancarlo Esposito and Stanley Tucci. It also features the vocal talents of Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Hank Azaria, Colman Domingo and Alan Tudyk.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings franchise has been a widespread name across the world, and the franchise has decided to ride on the trend of getting itself an anime adaptation. By collaborating with New Line Cinema studios and bringing together an alluring cast featuring Brian Cox, Luke Pasqualino, Gaia Wise, and many more names, they started working on the anime title the Lotr: The War of the Rohirrim.

Though the idea sounds nice and intriguing, where it features bewitching animation with tons of action, it had a steep drop in the voice acting section. The problem was so grim that Cox, the actor behind the voice of Helm Hammerhead, expressed his dissatisfaction with the subpar quality that hindered the anime adaptation from recreating the success of the live-action films.
