“CSI” Og Marg Helgenberger will return to the role of Catherine Willows for “CSI: Vegas” this fall, a continuation of CBS’ long-running forensics crime franchise, and on Friday the actress revealed part of the reason you’ll see her back is because she missed her character.
“When I left, midway through Season 12 of the original series, I needed to step back because I played the role for so long, and it had become such a part of my life that I felt she had become a part of my identity a little bit,” the actress said during CBS’ presentation at the Television Critics Association virtual summer press tour. “Having that perspective of being away from her and then coming back and in a big way as this, I did miss her actually. I missed her; I missed her passion; I missed her swagger; I missed her spunk.”

CBS is nearing a series order for what would be an event-series revival of crime-lab procedural “CSI,” with Paula Newsome, Matt Lauria and Mel Rodriguez joining the cast, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The Anthony Zuiker and Jerry Bruckheimer series, which aired from 2000-2015, was a longtime hit for the broadcaster. Centering on the crime-solvers of the Las Vegas Crime Lab, the original cast starred William Petersen, Marg Helgenberger, George Eads, Gary Dourdan, Jorja Fox, Paul Guilfoyle, Robert David Hall, and Eric Szmanda. In later seasons, Laurence Fishburne and Ted Danson succeeded Petersen in the lead role.
This iteration has added Newsome, a longtime film, TV and stage actor. She is most recently known for her performance opposite Henry Winkler and Bill Hader as detective Janice Moss in HBO’s “Barry,” as well as a 12-episode arc on NBC’s “Chicago Med.” Other television credits include “City of Angels,...

“CSI” could be coming back to CBS.
Variety has confirmed with sources that the broadcaster is eyeing a potential event series revival of the megahit show, which aired on the network from 2000-2015. The project is in the very early development stages and no original cast members are currently attached.
The idea would be to release the new installment in time for the show’s 20th anniversary in October, but no deals are in place as of yet. Original series creator Anthony Zuiker is in talks along with executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer and the show’s creative team. Jason Tracey would write the script. Tracey most recently worked on the CBS series “Elementary” in addition to shows like “Burn Notice” and “Cold Case.”
CBS and CBS Television Studios declined to comment.
“CSI” proved to be a breakout hit for CBS, drawing massive ratings for the network and quickly becoming one of TV’s most-watched shows.

An authorized documentary about Hollywood legend Sidney Poitier is among the diverse slate of projects in the works at the downtown L.A.-based Studio Sidecar Productions, the company announced Tuesday.
Michael Dunaway (“21 Years: Richard Linklater”) is directing and producing the untitled Poitier doc, which is sanctioned by the star’s family and co-produced by Studio Sidecar founder and president Glenn Kalison.
Reginald Poitier, Jeffrey Poitier, The Mass Appeal, Barbara Kopple and Danny Glover are also producing. The film, about the first black performer to win the Academy Award for Best Actor (for 1963’s “Lilies of the Field”), is currently in production and is expected to be released in 2019.

Studio Sidecar is an offshoot of Studio School Los Angeles, which leverages strategic partnerships, production infrastructure and emerging talent via its training programs to develop and produce innovative content.
“Our production capabilities and industry reach is vast, which lends itself to interesting partnering opportunities and great entry-level opportunities for Studio School students and recent graduates,” Kalison said.
In addition to the Poitier doc, other titles on the production company’s slate include:
• Director Jenni Gold’s “Aaah Roach,” a horror film now in postproduction about flesh eating killer cockroaches that attack a college campus that stars Jason Mewes, Barry Bostwick, Casper Van Dien, Grace Van Dien and Robert David Hall. 21 Rivers and Gold Pictures teamed up with Studio Sidecar Productions to produce.
• Director William Kirkley’s untitled doc about Questa, New Mexico, a town on the brink of extinction after the closing of Chevron mine three years ago. The story follows a group of former miners as they train to become below-the-line film technicians.
• “Esl,” a fact-based thriller developed with Matt Taylor and Ikumi Yoshimatsu’s Rim Entertainment. Set in an international boarding school in Pennsylvania, it follows a group of students who uncover urban legend and expose dark local lore still alive underneath the small town that unleashes a dark evil.
• A multi-digital platform hip-hop dance series from Cameron McLeod, a Radio Disney host known on social media sites as CamdogFX.

This month Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars gets its home entertainment release with Casper Van Dien and Dina Meyer returning from Paul Verhoeven’s original to add their voices to the latest entry in the series. The release of this new animated movie marked the twentieth anniversary of the original film, and, more than any other entry in the series, aims to recapture the magic and mayhem of Verhoeven’s 1997 classic.

At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, TV is invading the schedule in a whole new way. The Park City film fest has previously dabbled in what’s possible on the small screen, but this year marks the launch of the Indie Episodics section — which will spotlight TV pilots that mostly lack mainstream distribution.
The selections include “America to Me,” a new docu-series by “Hoop Dreams” director Steve James; as well as “The Mortified Guide,” a screen adaptation of the popular stage show “Mortified,” spotlighting the most embarrassing true stories of adolescence. There’s also “This Close,” showcasing star/creators Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern (both of whom are deaf), and “Franchesca,” featuring digital star and “The Nightly Show” writer/contributor Franchesca Ramsey.
This marks a major change for Sundance, and a renewed commitment to independent television. While Sundance has featured TV programming since the premiere of “Top of the Lake” in...

CBS has moved CSI: Crime Scene Investigation to Sunday nights at 10pm this season -- typically a sign that a show is on its way out. But, could the ratings turnaround and start to rise? Will the venerable series be renewed for a 16th season or will this be the end? Stay tuned.

For the first time since the 2008 writers strike, veteran crime drama CSI won't have a full season of episodes. CBS has reportedly decided to cut season 15's order from 22 to 18 installments.
The original CSI continues to follow Las Vegas crime scene investigators as they try to solve bizarre cases. This season's castmates are Ted Danson, Elisabeth Shue, George Eads, Jorja Fox, Eric Szmanda, Robert David Hall, Wallace Langham, David Berman, Elisabeth Hamois, and Jon Wellner.
The ratings are understandably down year-to-year, thanks to CSI's move to Sunday nights when start-times often get pushed thanks to football over-runs. Still, the numbers aren't bad compared to previous year's timeslot occupants.
The episode trim is supposedly due to the network having too much programming waiting in the wings. New series CSI: Cyber will take over the Sundays at 10pm timeslot later...

CSI received its inevitable renewal – it’s the No. 1 show in its Wedneday 10 p.m. timeslot – taking it to Season 14, and with that extension comes the need to make sure all the cast are signed on to continue their roles. In particular, Ted Danson’s original two-year deal is up, so he needed to renegotiate his contract to ensure his future on the series. Thankfully, it appears as though all the deals have gone through smoothly. No drama; no fuss. Everyone is returning for Season 14 and likely beyond. It’s a good time to be a part of the original CSI crew.
The particulars of Danson’s new deal aren’t all that interesting. According to Deadline, he signed on for another two years and his salary is well over $200,000 per episode. Also returning is Elisabeth Shue – she came on board with Danson as the new co-leads – as well as George Eads,...

Just like it recently did with NCIS and its star Mark Harmon, CBS has signed a new contract extension with CSI: Crime Scene Investigation leading man Ted Danson and simultaneously renewed the veteran crime drama for the 2013-14 season. I hear Danson, whose original two-year deal for the show was up this season, has signed another two-year pact. His salary has been well over $200,000 an episode. Also set to return next season are co-lead Elisabeth Shue and original cast members George Eads, Jorja Fox, Eric Szmanda, Paul Guilfoyle and Robert David Hall, along with Wallace Langham, Elisabeth Harnois, David Berman and Jon Wellner. The renewal will extend CSI‘s run to 14 seasons. With CSI: Miami ending last May and CSI: NY expected to follow it this year, the mothership series is expected to be the only CSI on the air next season. On NBC, first spinoff Law & Order: Svu actually...

In The Sessions, opening in theaters this weekend, John Hawkes plays late poet Mark O’Brien, who was paralyzed from the neck down due to polio, and sought, in real life, to lose his virginity by working with a therapeutic sex surrogate. Hawkes is beyond emotionally and physically adept as O’Brien, restricted to laying flat in a huge iron lung, or being wheeled around on a portable cot, his face shifted to the side, his arms pinned to his sides. He’s partially nude at times, staring up at his sex therapist, played by distant-then warm Helen Hunt, and by turns funny,...

Morgan (Elisabeth Harnois), Greg (Eric Szmanda and Db (Ted Danson), arrive at a crime scene where a dead body has been discovered. He turns out to be alive and Db gets them to process as much of the scene and suspect as possible, before he's flown out. Db wants Greg to accompany the flight but Morgan volunteers. For obvious reasons, so Greg can feel guilty later and act out for being the one who should have been there. Beforehand Morgan rants about La and its virtues over Vegas, so why make the move here, other than to reconcile with her father, Ecklie (Marc Vann). The suspect has marks on his wrists showing he was bound and tazer marks on his neck. Nick (George Eads) calls for help with the Cs he's at, a double homicide and Catherine (Marg Helgenberger) and Sara (Jorga Fox) are in court. they must really be short staffed.

Greg (Eric Szmanda) Catherine (Marg Helgenberger) Db (Ted Danson) and Ecklie (Marc Vann) attend the opening of the Mob museum, officially opened by former Mayor of Las Vegas, Oscar Goodman (Oscar Goodman). Db does the rounds with Ecklie and then talks to Catherine and Greg about the two wives standing with the wife Joanna (Frances Fisher) of the hitman, Vinny Sapphire who killed their husbands. As the Mayor toasts all hell breaks loose as shots are fired shattering his martini glass and hitting him three times. Sheriff Liston (Barbara Eve Harris) also at the event wants Ecklie and Db to get to the bottom of this pronto. The CSIs compare notes and find shots were fired from two different areas of the room. Db finds the gun behind one of the dummies, a .38, as is the weapon of choice in a mob hit and the shooter would always characteristically dump the gun at the scene.

He replies she's Doc Robbins (Robert David Hall) niece, Callie (Caitlin Custer) and he's showing her around. Db thinks there's more to it than that. Nick has removed his shirt (well he's wearing a vest underneath!) and catches the dripping liquid in a cup. An unexplained series of events occur on a Vegas tram; unexplained until the CSIs are on the case, that is. Nick (George Eads) returns from Hawaii after a seminar to find the joke's on him. The new boss, Db Russell (Ted Danson) lies on the tram floor and Nick thinks he's just a Db, which he is. Db by name, but not a real Db! Nick's reaction to his name, his initials is exactly what I thought when it was revealed who Ted was going to play in the show. Db as many know stands for 'dead body.' The others can only laugh and disappear. Nick isn't too happy to be the butt of their joke and he and Db don't really seem to hit it off - not like Nick and Ray (Laurence Fishburne). Two people were killed on the tram and three were injured. One Vic, Tom (Nathan Anderson) was stabbed.

And then Kayla starts having a racing heart, feeling dizzy and hyperventilating, saying she took a bunch of ibuprofen. She is taken away by ambulance, but returns at 2 a.m. with Laura. She says she had cardiac arrhythmia and now she's Ok. Lamest after-school special ever.

The prize this week is a guest-starring spot on "CSI." Creator Anthony Zuiker is there to help judge. They are given a scene and 30 minutes to memorize it.

In a dark, dark house, a struggle ensues between Ray (Laurence Fishburne) and Haskell (Bill Irwin). Ray subdues and cuffs him using regulation issue flex-cuffs. (Important for later.) He then cuts the cuffs and they go head-to-head. Obviously Ray would come out the victor. Before all this, Haskell taunts Ray saying he's killed many. Ray doesn't want to shoot him. Ray would beat Haskell up in that way, with such violence and rage; partly for himself and mostly for Gloria (Tracee Ellis Ross). He knew how to play Ray and that's exactly what Ray did, he went for the taunts. Haskell says they "share something special." He assaulted Gloria, including torturing her and that got Ray's goat. Brass (Paul Guilfoyle) had to arrive first at the scene, so he could help Ray. That's why the camera focused on the cuffs which Ray left on the floor. Brass advises Ray to refrain from speaking with anyone.

Nick (George Eads) and Ray (Laurence Fishburne) searching for a Cs at the beginning, was almost indicative of Ray's search for Haskell (Bill Irwin). Who else would leave DBs in his wake. Nick comments on there being lots of manure here and Ray can smell it, can't help wondering if that was a snide remark about the B.S churned out by Haskell in this episode. No one was really on the ball, I have to say as far as Haskell was concerned. Rray nearly drives into a, "holy cow" as Nick says. Hey Nick should know all about cows from the question Gil (William Petersen) asked him: "What do cows drink?" All those seasons ago. They comes across scattered Db parts in a barn.
