Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody is a movie directed by Kasi Lemmons starring Naomi Ackie.
Today we saw this biopic about the always great Whitney Houston… according to some, the singer deserved something better than this; and for others… a good chance to remember her always.
A tribute to the singer born in Newark.
About the Movie Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody
Another biopic? Unfortunately, yes. This genre calls for more respect for the biography than a more developed introspection of the characters and frequently settles for composing works that revolve around more or less famous fragments and lose out (almost always) in the general balance, forcing respecto ver creation.
Many are born as failures.
With all our respects (totally) for the singer, we are of the opinion that this is a movie that although it is faithful to the biography, does not manage to transmit...

A decade after her death, Whitney Houston’s life and legacy has made it to the big screen thanks to the Kasi Lemmons-directed biopic Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody, starring Naomi Ackie as the iconic performer.
While attending the premiere at AMC Lincoln Square in New York City on Tuesday, the film’s cast and production team opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about portraying the highs in Houston’s career, as well as some of the low moments in both her professional and personal lives.
“It was a big challenge,” Ackie revealed of how the film balanced both sides of the late singer’s life. “It was really hard to do, but I think it does it the best way it can. To tell the truth but to protect somebody’s dignity and integrity is really important.”

It’s the last month of the year, and though the holidays are very much on everyone’s minds, so is the awards season, which will start in earnest this week. Expect to see an interesting mix of family films and prestige pictures released in December, although few will make as big a mark as the highly anticipated sequel to “Avatar.” Read on for Gold Derby’s December 2022 box office preview.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” (20th Century/Disney) – Dec. 16
This December’s mega-doozy blockbuster marks the return of filmmaker James Cameron to the world of Pandora from 2009’s “Avatar.” For the longest time, it was the highest-grossing movie in North America, opening with a mere 77 million, but going on to gross 750 million domestically and 2.7 million worldwide. Although it’s doubtful that a sequel 13 years later can exceed the original’s success, we’re experiencing a year in which Tom Cruise...

Two all new celebrities in disguise took to “The Masked Singer” stage for “Fright Night” on Wednesday, November 23, singing their hearts out and coming for Snowstorm’s crown. After giving a soulful rendition of “Devil With the Blue Dress On” by Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels, Sir Bug a Boo advanced to the evening’s Battle Royale, only to be bested by Snowstorm after singing “Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell. The entire panel consisting of Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger failed to correctly guess Grammy-winning swinger-songwriter Ray Parker Jr. was behind the mask.

(Warning: Spoilers ahead for Wednesday night’s episode of “The Masked Singer”).
It was fright night on Wednesday’s episode of “The Masked Singer,” but the only thing to be truly afraid of was elimination. And unfortunately, that was the case for Sir Bugaboo. But he wasn’t afraid of being guessed right away (and he certainly wasn’t afraid of no ghosts).
Heading into the episode, fans didn’t get much in the way of clues on Sir Bugaboo’s identity. All they knew was that his costume was very reminiscent of the Cheshire Cat from “Alice in Wonderland,” and his mask-ray revealed a bow tie. As a result, some fans speculated it might be Bill Nye the Science Guy, known for his bow ties in each video. Other suggested it could be “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who has released bow tie collections in the past.
In the end though,...

The second trailer for the upcoming Whitney Houston biopic, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," dropped today, and we've already got goosebumps. Directed by the brilliant Kasi Lemmons, this celebration of one of the greatest vocalists to ever walk the earth is the latest biopic from the producers who created the Academy Award-winning film about Freddie Mercury, "Bohemian Rhapsody." Whitney Houston's life has been at the center of public speculation for decades, and her untimely death only exacerbated tabloid obsessions. Fortunately, based on everything we know about "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," Lemmons' film starring Naomi Ackie is an empathetic look at the woman remembered as "The Voice."
The new trailer intercuts footage from the film against the sound of Whitney Houston belting out "I Will Always Love You," a surefire way to pull on the emotional heartstrings of anyone watching. There are shots of crowds cheering her name, Oprah Winfrey introducing her to an audience,...

This second trailer for Sony’s Kasi Lemmons-directed Whitney Houston biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” is almost entirely scored to Houston’s blockbuster cover of “I Will Always Love You.” That is a valid choice, especially as “The Bodyguard” turns 30 on Nov. 25.
That Kevin Costner/Whitney Houston romantic thriller earned 121 million domestic (around 282 million when adjusted for inflation) and 411 million worldwide in 1992/1993. That made it the third-biggest R-rated global grosser ever behind “Pretty Woman” (463 million in 1990) and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (519 million in 1991). So reminding audiences of the film for which “I Will Always Love You” was reappropriated makes sense.
It’s also a curious choice considering the film is called “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” which is arguably polar opposite in terms of tempo and emotional impact. It would be like, offhand, setting a trailer for a Michael Jackson biopic to “Ben” and then revealing the title...

Millie Bobby Brown’s eccentric fourth wall breaks have become such a distinguishable trademark of Harry Bradbeer’s “Enola Holmes” films that in the sequel, the “Stranger Things” star tried to do it in every scene she could.
“Maybe Harry can agree with me on this but I think in every scene we tried doing, we tried breaking the fourth wall and then he edited the ones that landed the most,” Brown told Variety at the New York premiere of “Enola Holmes 2” on Thursday night at the Paris Theater.
Brown went on to say that she took inspiration from Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s fourth wall-breaking techniques in “Fleabag,” the critically acclaimed Amazon Prime series on which Bradbeer also served as a director.
“It’s just like the most perfect way to break the fourth wall with her wit, her humor, her timing,” Bobby Brown said. “It’s so inspirational to me.

With a sequel well on its way, Netflix's "Enola Holmes" film series has firmly carved out its place among the plethora of Holmes-focused adaptations. This is not only thanks to an inspired performance by Millie Bobby Brown in the titular role, but to Henry Cavill, who plays her on-screen brother, Sherlock Holmes. The lighter tone, relative to other adaptations, lets the actors have fun with the high stakes mysteries and familial relationships. Relegating Sherlock Holmes to a supporting role works far more than it reads on paper, and Cavill capitalizes on that fact in spades.
Although it seems like a miscasting at first glance, the "Man of Steel" actor embodies the long-tenured character with ease and confidence. However, even Cavill himself was shocked that he was approached for the role in the first place. The uber-intelligent fictional detective is typically played by less physically imposing figures on the...

The game is afoot ... again! Millie Bobby Brown's Enola Holmes made her highly entertaining screen debut back in 2020, with Henry Cavill co-starring as her brother (some wavy-haired chap by the name of Sherlock). It's still hard to imagine how musical biopics can exist in a post "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" world, but the last few years have been bursting with big-budget biopics centered on some of the most iconic performers in music history. Jennifer Hudson belted her face off as Aretha Franklin in "Respect," Taron Egerton was downright dazzling as Elton John in "Rocketman," Austin Butler may be looking at an Oscar nomination for his turn in "Elvis," following a trend set by Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody." Now, the queen of R&b is getting a high-profile film of her own, with Naomi Ackie as Whitney Houston.

If being the most decorated female singer of all time and being dubbed “The Voice” aren’t honorific enough, Whitney Houston is now getting the biopic treatment. Now, the first trailer for I Wanna Dance With Somebody has dropped, showcasing Houston in all of her glory.
The trailer for I Wanna Dance with Somebody opens with Whitney Houston being forced to take the stage after her mother can’t perform. With famed record producer Clive Davis in the audience, Houston is soon in the spotlight. Guided by early single “How Will I Know”, various clips show Houston as both a commanding presence and the target of scrutiny for not making “black enough” music. Another key highlight is her performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl Xxv, one of the most iconic renditions of the song.

Movie musical biopics are a beloved Hollywood tradition and one that — unlike erotic thrillers — shows no signs of slowing down.
Over the years we’ve seen Sissy Spacek win an Oscar as Loretta Lynn in “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” Jessica Lange earn a nomination as Patsy Cline in “Sweet Dreams,” and Reese Witherspoon win Best Supporting Actress as June Carter Cash in “Walk the Line.” And that’s just the country music biopics.
Portraying a musical icon is just the next step in an evolving way to showcase triple-threat talent. Jamie Foxx took home the Best Actor Oscar for his transformation into Ray Charles for the 2004 film “Ray.” Joaquin Phoenix showed a new facet to his talent as Johnny Cash in “Walk the Line.” Marion Cotillard burst onto the international scene (and won a Best Actress Oscar) as Edith Piaf in “La Vie En Rose,” and more recently Rami Malek and...

Naomi Ackie’s greatest challenge of all? Transforming into the “Greatest Love of All” singer Whitney Houston.
BAFTA award winner Ackie stars as the late icon for musical biopic “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” in theaters December 21. The film, written by Oscar-nominated “Bohemian Rhapsody” screenwriter Anthony McCarten and directed by Kasi Lemmons, charts Houston’s life and legacy, starting with her groundbreaking record deal with Clive Davis, played by Stanley Tucci.
“My dream: Sing what I want to sing, be who I want to be,” Ackie as Houston says in the trailer. While Houston is criticized for not being “Black enough” and her tumultuous marriage to Bobby Brown (Ashton Sanders) makes headlines, the biopic focuses on her early days as a New Jersey choir girl who became the bestselling and most awarded recording artist of all time. The “no-holds-barred portrait” gives a never-before-seen look at Houston’s “complicated and multi-faceted” career.

Stranger Things' Sadie Sink gave one of the best acting performances of the year. So, why wasn't she nominated for a top prize at the 2022 Emmys? That's a question even Stranger Things executive producer Shawn Levy is asking. When exclusively speaking with E! "All of our actors did amazing work this season," he continued. "But this season was really built to a large extent around the two female character pillars, Eleven and Max. Both Millie [Bobby Brown] and...

A judge has ordered Nick Gordon to pay more than $36 million to the family of Bobbi Kristina Brown, two months after he was found legally responsible for her death. The daughter of Bobbi Brown and the late Whitney Houston died in July 2015 at age 22 after being in a coma for months. He denied any wrongdoing and was never charged with a crime. Her estate later filed a $50 million wrongful death civil lawsuit against him. Fulton County Superior Court Judge T.
